in my inbox this morning

I think someone has totally missed the of what international Women's Day is about

No big brother really is watching us, I get stuff in my side bars that I know is because Google spies on the links you follow.

Drove me mad because it always seems to be either something daft of here or something you have bought and don't need again.

When I was young, I always believed that adage that old age mellowed people. Yet, for a number of women I knew it seemed they became angrier and more radical as they got older. Now I understand why. For every gain we make, there is a backlash - a reminder not to forget what society really thinks of us. Some days I think I have woken up in an alternate reality where Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Audre Lorde and all other pioneers never existed. I don't want cheap, lacy underwear, with a tiara. I want equality for girls and women across the globe.

whenthered too right, I was a trouser wearing, chopper style riding Tom boy in the '70s.

The pink frilly, high heeled over made up dolly bird 'role models' in the media today for my DDs make me shock

That we still don't have equal graduate pay and or female bishops makes me angry

That religions that treat women even more like objects seem to be getting more and more powerful makes very, very angry indeed.

I'd have hoped my DDs wouldn't have to be feminists, but I think the bigger battles are only just beginning.

I think IWD misses the point of IWD.

There shouldn't be just one day a year when people discuss the prevalence of sexual violence, harassment and the like. It should be discussed every day in incredulous disbelief that it's actually still happening until it stops. We shouldn't need an IWD. We're a majority being treated like a minority.

Besides IWD allows the antis whine about there not being an international man's day.

Sorry if that all sounds a bit grumpy!

Not grumpy at all.

I'm to much a very liberal conservative, (think American Democrat, with a bit of free market economics thrown in) to feel totally comfortable with IWDs very socialist roots.

Everyday should be respect for everyone day, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation day.

Interesting thread, thanks!

Capitalism always finds a way to make peace with everybody and make a dollar from it. Just revamp, sex up and glamorise!

That shows you can put a spin on almost everything to make profit. Women's Day is not exception.

Yes!! although, I have had fun telling the whaddaboutdamenz-ers that International Mens Day is on the 19th November. It ties in with Movember and promotes male role models, mens health such as prostate cancer and male breast cancer, and male contributions to childcare and gender equality. If they don't know about it, that's not the fault of Nasty Feminists.

sorry for derail, btw.

I had a similar email op. v frustrating.

Trampy, that's a very interesting piece of info, thanks!

I saw a pink bus covered in lipstick kisses promoting IWD. Heigh ho!

I got sent pictures of muscley women with foreign words superimposed over the top from different parts of the world. And feminist graffiti photos. They were all great!

(Just to add something cheery.)

(Not body builders, just strong-looking I meant.)
