aftermath of rape.

I have fallen into a discussion with a girl on my course over facebook. She put quite an offensive status claiming that women who have abortions are murderers. It has come to the subject of rape survivors, with her insisting that even after a rape, women should understand biology enough to know that they need to take emergency contraception. I pointed out that she was basically placing the blame for an unwanted pregnancy resulting from rape on the victim and that her point didn't stand because the victims of rape are often left traumatised and unable to even get out of bed, let alone seek emergency contraception. I was wondering if anyone knows any good statisitcs or articles I could cite to back up this point?

No, I don't but I'm wondering if such a bell end is even worth debating with
allthegoodnames. In my experience extremists like that are not going to budge even in the face of any evidence you might present. They make up their minds in spite of facts, not because of them. Sad

Yes, I'm finding that. She seems to think that there is a time limit on how long it's acceptable to be traumatised by a rape. (It's less than three days so that you can still get the morning after pill....)

I wouldn't bother engaging with her either.
You won't get anywhere.

I stopped replying after a while because people started getting quite agressive and personal. Why is it that people start getting nasty once they realise they haven't got a leg to stand on?

Because she's arguing from a point of belief - that a human being with a right to life is formed at conception and that to terminate it is murder.

People who are pro-choice (inc me) are arguing from the opposite belief.

Neither side will ever convince each other, because you can rarely change someone's basic beliefs through logical argument. So people resort to emotional arguments instead.

Agreed, it was silly to get involved really. I'm blaming the fact that I have a very boring assignment due in tomorrow and was looking for reasons to procrastinate!

Ask her about a woman with an ectopic pregnancy - is it OK to have an operation to save her life but that will result in the ending of a pregnancy.

Only the most hardline anti bortion, woman hating idiots think you should not have an operation to terminate an ectopic pregnancy.
