Mx as a title- from UK deed poll service

"UK Deed Poll Service
About the title Mx

In October 2011, we introduced the title of Mx (pronounced Mix) as an option for people who do not identify themselves as either male or female and, therefore, feel a gender specific title such as Mr or Miss is inappropriate and unsuitable for them.

We are unable to guarantee that all record holders (i.e. government departments, companies and organisations that hold your personal records) will recognise your new title but we believe many will and in time all will. Initially, the problem will be record holders? computer systems not being able to accept Mx as a title but when a significant number of people request record holders show their title as Mx a tipping point will be reached causing record holders to reprogram their systems to accommodate Mx as a title."

I like the idea of a gender neutral title, but I wonder who decided it should be a word pronounced 'mix.'

I like the idea of a gender neutral title, but why not just get rid of titles?

I think it would be difficult to get rid of titles because of the connotations of either calling somebody by their first name if you don't know them, which comes across as overly familiar (the elderly in hospital often want to be called Mrs Jones rather than Claire by nursing staff, for example), or calling somebody by just their last name, which would make us sound like pupils in a boys' boarding school.

It infers that there is some ambiguity about someone's gender and distinguishes them apart, it seems unnecessary and insulting.

I don't see a problem with replacing all titles with one single form of address, that would get round the problem of having to use first name or last name, which sounds abrupt, it could be class, gender and sex neutral.

I think this Mx (pronounced Mix) is very insulting too.

I'm not overly fond of titles, however a way to get around them is to replace Mr, Ms, Mrs etc with just a M.

Any male or female people who want to be called by their surname could be called M (pronounced mmm) Smith, M Jones, etc.

I've always like "Citizen".

In Japanese, aren't the forms of spoken address for men and women the same? Isn't it Clanger-san, whether it was me or DH being addressed?

I wouldn't mind being a Mx
Would be better than the titles that we have at the mo
I suspect more women than men would adopt it
Is it the idea that eventually this will replace mr, mrs, miss etc?

Agree with mini it says that the title is for people who don't identify with either gender, not people who don't wish to be adressed gender specifically for political reasons. So it does imply that the person is 'other' which in this society is rarely seen as a positive.
I agree we should just have one, universal title.
