Brian Cox's Night with the stars

Was it just me or did I miss all the female "stars" on this programme?

Before the start of his lecture all the "stars" interviewed were male ( one token female scientist had a strap line to add). I managed to spy Connie Huq in the audience; would have much preferred her to add her enthuasiasm for science rather than her other half.

Good on Sarah Millican for getting up for an experiment and there were plenty of females in the audience but come on BBC ( sorry, did I forget women aren't interested in material science :P!!)

i went to Uncaged Monkeys science comedy event on the day of the Higg Boson news.

same problem. many women in the audience (not quite 50% but not far off). one women on the stage (Josie Long) with say 7+ men (inc Prof Brian).

the good news was there was a live link up with researchers at CERN & some of them were women.

hurrah for Sarah Millican!

We were at the RI on Saturday and saw behind the scenes for the Christmas lectures and there are a lot of women involved in all the hands-on stuff. You are very right about the pre and post lecture soundbites though.

Well I think the most, incredible, amazing thing that I discovered was that he looks that good and he's 43.

Maybe they just didn't want to go? I assume lots of stars were invited and it was then up to them to decide if they wanted to go or not.

FWIW I don't think it was aimed at men, or male orientated overall at all. And most of the people I know who watched it were female.

And the scientists I know are female.

Just watched it on iplayer and agree it was a bit male oriented. Suspect this is because the majority of slebs who are comfortable with professing an interest in science (as opposed to portraying themselves as shallow, 1-dimensional slebs) are men. Not to say that women aren't interested. Just that it is easier for male celebrities to continue to be seen as an entertainer and a bit cerebral than it is for females.

Possibly. Not sure.
