Boycott those suckers!?

Should women blacklist companies with no female board members? There is a pragmatic part of me that thinks yes - ie, my life is important and it would likely be hellish working in companies that have failed to value and promote women, so therefore not worth it. But what are the implications of such a decision for Feminism?

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, BTW...

Personally, I wouldn't. I don't think the gender of the participants at that level is relevant, it's all about profit by then. But I do think that companies should be forced to have a minimum percentage of female employees/board members.

I agree with ecclesvet. I really, really do not agree with quotas for female board membership - it loses it's meaning. A lot more effort should be put into breaking through the glass ceiling in other ways (mentoring, breaking down the old boys network, pushing for equal rights). If you know you're in your position, not because you're talented, or because you've worked hard or because you deserve it, but because you're there to fill a quota, it does no one any favours.

I think you might have skimmed my post, ADW - I do agree with female quotas. Not 50%, because then you do get into situations where candidates are given the position based on their genitals, and not their CV.

But perhaps a minimum of 10% female employees at each level (perhaps determined by pay, or job title, or case-by-case review of the business' management structure); this would ensure that there are no businesses which a woman feels she could not work in due to her gender, but it still makes sure that progression is due to performance, not sex.

I don't like quotas - if you want to promote me, do it because I'm worth it. I think we need to look further down the hierarchy - are women going after jobs as section leaders, departmental heads, regional managers etc etc. We can't expect them to suddenly appear as directors if they haven't done the ground work. And if women aren't applying for these jobs, why not (I'm guessing that the increase in responsibility, need to travel etc coincides with the time in her life when a woman is having children, but I could be wrong).

We have quotas now. Hidden ones to make sure that there are enough white men in positions of power. They discuss them down at the golf club.

Sorry broke my own rule there. Yes Einsty, we should boycott companies with no female board members. We only get places with collective action.
