Its for my essay. I have started an earlier thread about it. Am pouring through texts but struggling to find anything about mens thoughts on womens beauty/ugliness. Anyone think of anything? Along the lines of the male gaze I am thinking.

Do you mean literature like actual novels? Or theory?

Theory. And anything on the appearance of black women. Thanks.

Got The Beauty Myth out of the library and i think I will find something suitable in there. I really need to comment on his 'disgust' at her being dark. Need to find something on that, will look for bell hooks again tomorrow. SGM- Wanna read it?

Celie in 'The Color Purple' is considered ugly and too dark-skinned by herself, men around her and Shug.

From Schopenhauer's infamous essay 'On Women':

''Only a male intellect clouded by the sexual drive could call the stunted, narrow-shouldered, broad-hipped and short-legged sex the fair sex: for it is with this drive that all its beauty is bound up.'

David, have you read my other thread with the passage on? I want to dispute the narrators perception of the woman being ugly/black. I need some comment from a theorist to explain why his thoughts are as misogynist as we think. (in 21century)
