Sunday Times 'The Trouble With Woman' column

example here. (There are a few more you can get at from before the pay wall went up.)

here

I am so fed up with this bloody column. The other week there was one about why women are crap drivers. Then there was one which I fortunately missed which resulted in lots of letters to the editor which I guess must have been even more offensive.

They seem to have done a 'trouble with men' (here) once which of course was equally sexist and dim, but basically the column is low-level misogyny.

anyone else getting hugely annoyed by this, or just me?

I have to say, this column DOES MY HEAD IN!

I keep toying with the idea of sending in a mail entitled "the trouble with men" (I obviously missed the one week they had a TWM one!) and commenting that the trouble with men is that they really have LITTLE to trouble them if they think that their relationship issues can be resolved by their girlfriend paying more attention to her personal grooming (there was one week when the problem was not paying enough attention to your bikini line!) and the like.

But then I think that is simply reducing myself to the same level, so I am trying to rise above.

i definitely DO NOT read it anymore though, as I just end up roaring in annoyance at the paper!

WHY on Earth are you still buying this load of misogynist drivel? Why line Murdoch's pockets? He's a misogynist twonk.

LOL IrishSKH.
I think I might email them and say 'The trouble with women.... is that they tend to get pissed off with sexist shit and not want to spend good money paying for it, so I have just cancelled my regular order for the Sunday Times.'

well we buy the Sunday Times because it generally has quite a few bits of good writing in it, but you are right Expat, the time has come to quit.

I hate this column too, in fact the entire Sunday Times drives me round the bend every weekend. There was a very recent 'trouble with...' basically whining about how women don't age well, we are all past it after 30! Every other week there also seems to be an article extolling the virtues of prostitution. IMHO the whole paper seems to be about wealthy male entitlement and how everyone else should just fit round said entitlement.

We cancelled our delivery a couple of months ago, but the last couple of weekends it has found its way into our living room again. Must exercise more self control and keep in mind Expat's logic that while we keep buying this drivel, it's our money lining their pockets.

I used to read it but it has become more about wealthy, white male entitlement.

So yes, every time you consider it, picture twatface Murdoch boarding his private jet or spraffing off more misogynist nonsense. Misogyny is misogyny regardless if it's in the form of Murdoch or the Taliban.

Don't support it by buying his products.

We used to get the Observer but that Women magazine drivel wound me up too much.
I'm guessing the Telegraph isn't going to be much better.
Which just leaves the Independent on Sunday - any good?

Dear God, can you imagine if the column was "the trouble with blacks" or "the trouble with gays" or "the trouble with disabled people"?????????????????????????????????

Why is sexist shit still ok?

Well, we're in Ireland (hence the name) and there is less choice - at least this paper provides an Irish edition of a UK paper, so in general it's okay.

It also has the best weekly TV guide, reason enough to buy it for me!

Also, usually I only read the bits I like and am able to ignore known columns that I dislike / disagree with, but that one happens to be on a page that I do like, where I like to read the rest of the info - and accidentally my eyes alight on that bloody column most weeks, grr! At least I only read the title - but that is honestly enough.

God, I don't read the Times (Sunday or other) but how is it that they can get away with having a column like that? No other group would stand for it.

Should there be a complaint to the PCC?

It's the crass generalisation in columns like this that get me. Should be called 'The trouble with my wife' or 'The trouble with some women I personally know'. Just because the writer's wife doesn't take criticism of her food well doesn't mean that 50% of the world's population are exactly the same.

I buy The Guardian on Saturday and save it to read on Sunday. It can be a little smug in places (especially the godawful Family section) but the news and review sections are good and the magazine is less nauseating than the Sunday Times mag. And you are not contibuting to Murdoch's greasy sleazy empire.

I was brought up in a working class family where we read the Sunday Mirror and the People. In the 'old days' they weren't as full of crap as now. I can remember going to uni and seeing the Sunday Times and thinking I'd died and gone to Heaven.

Luckily, my conciousness was raised with regard to misogyny and patriachal values so I discovered the Guardian and Observer. They reflect the life-styles of the middle classes but were politically life changing for me.

Imagine my surprise last weekend when, in the Observer magazine, I spotted an advertisement for a 'lap-dancing school'.
Mary Stott and Jill Tweedie, you have been betrayed.

I am saddened and sickened to an almost embarrassing extent. Though as the supported Clegg during the election, I should know they have forgotten their roots.

Like FLF I don't know where to turn, I find the Independent very dry.

Bad news about the lap-dancing school ad in the Obs.

The Guardian are running Nestle ads at the moment which is making me rethink whether to continue buying it.

....and they wonder why sales are down.

Publishing a weekly column containing offensive generalizations about 50% of your readers, what a great strategy to keep your sales up

But sethstarkaddersmum.. everyone knows that women dont buy the times.. we are too busy caring for the children and baking on a Sunday. Our husbands might highlight a couple of interesting articles for us if they feel they are suitable. Sometimes if I have got all the housework done before lunch he'll allow me to read the 'style' suppliment

'I don't buy any mainstream press any more.'

I haven't for a while. I don't want to enrich any of these people.

I have finally bitten the bullet and will not buy the Times anymore.

This is after the most unintelligent and tabloid crap article about underage girls on the pill in the ST this Sunday just gone.

Utter sensationalist shite. Bollocks to it.

i will miss Caitlin Moran but never mind. I won't miss Giles 'twatface' Coren so it all balances out.

ST has always been completely unrealistic for people with normal lives, but now it is utterly stupid shite as well. I won't waste my money on it any more.

Oh well perhaps things will get DONE on Sunday in future. Every cloud.

Times/ST Good Things: Queen Knight of India and Dame Caitlin of Moran.

Abd that brilliant columnist who I always agere with on opposite page to Giles Coren's column on Saturday, oh god what is her name, she is a genius.

The agony aunt in ST style is good, bless her.

Bad things:

Giles Coren. There are not enough words. Twat nonetheless.
Jeremy Clarkson. Curly sheep haired twat.
AA Gill - overbite twat.
Camilla Long. Not as pretty or clever as she thinks she is twat.
Daisy Waugh. Pinched face twat. You are not your grandfather, love.
Minette Marin. 'Controversial' twat.
99% of style magazine.
The homes supplement.

I will miss Michael Winner, though.

Oh, yes, the Style Times, trying hard to be Vogue, another piece of shite.

I have never in my life bought Vogue.

I did buy Elle magaizine a couple of week's ago to get a free top that came with, what a vacuous load of shite that is.

Sod it, I will just read books from now on and be noble.

There is NOTHING worth reading. No paper, no magazine.

The only thing I buy now is Sainsbos magazine for the recipes, oh my interesting life
