Dark Age Economics

I'm sure there are some knowledgeable historians out there... can anyone recommend a book on the economics of the 'Dark Ages'? It's a little light reading for my husband. He manages money for a living and recently read a short article on the period, how many generations it was thought to have taken to relearn skills which had been outsourced overseas etc.
