Thriller/mystery recommendations

Trying to find a good thriller but it all seems to be Gone Girl copies, found The Widow to be rubbish too. Just trying to find a good, well written thriller at the moment seems impossible! Does anyone have any recent(ish) recommendations for me, pleeeeease!

Watching with interest. Just read a couple of Gone Girl rip offs that came recommended but both were rubbish.

It's more investigation than thriller although there is a fair bit of peril, but I've been enjoying the Genevieve Lenard series by Estelle Ryan. I've just bought the last book in the series so far, and I'm saving it for when I can settle in and read the whole thing. I'm hoping that the author plans to write a few more.

Try Belinda Bauer's novels. I think she's very good. There's a trilogy of novels set on Exmoor starting with Blacklands, then Dark Side and finally Finders Keepers. Definitely not Gone Girl rip offs, completely unique and gripping reads.

Anything by Peter Robinson, Peter May or Ellie Griffiths. Peter James is good too.
Val MacDermid is sometimes pretty gruesome but absolutely spellbinding....

I'm still raving about the police one from the real-life detective. THE THESEUS PARADOX. A shocking thriller based around his real investigation. Everyone is talking about it on the book club forums - seems to be the word-of-mouth hit for 2016.

everydayinMK, you recommend The Theseus Paradox at every opportunity; I've seen you do so repeatedly. Are you the author or related? I wasn't convinced to buy it on the strength of the sample TBH, and I am a glutton for political thrillers.

I'm just in love with it. Totally captured my imagination and I read a lot of books. The twist at the ending blew me away. I think because I read a lot of crime fiction and that book was unusual and different. It was like a mash up and it made me question how much is fiction and how much is fact. Other stuff I've read recently - 'Girl in the Ice', 'Behind Closed Doors', 'The Widow', 'I Am Pilgrim', and 'After the Crash'. Have you read any of those? Got any good recommendations for me, cressetmama?

I have two recommendations:

The Nicci French 'Dr Frieda Klein' series (and anything else by them), Blue Monday, Tuesday's Gone, Waiting For Wednesday etc.

Waiting For Sunrise by William Boyd. I'm always championing his work to friends and family, he is an amazing storyteller and this book is full of suspense.

I liked I am Pilgrim, Bite, and The Sea Detective which are all on Kindle. Otherwise, I like some of the big name writers -- Michael Connelly, Peter May, Peter Robinson, Val McDermid, Gerald Seymour, William Boyd, John Le Carre, Michael Ridpath is usually fun if you like financial thrillers, Quentin Jardine, Stephen Leather. I'm less keen on Mark Billingham, John Grisham and Wilbur Smith, and I have an irrational loathing for many others, usually based on their prose. The Scandi writers can be good but are better on TV IMO, although I recently enjoyed The Man Who Watched Women by the team that wrote the Bridge, Hjorth & Rosenfeldt. I am assuming you know Minette Walters, although she seems to have packed in writing as there's been nothing new for some time, and for some years I liked the F&F crime novels (Lesley Grant-Adamson IIRC) but again, I haven't seen anything much recently.

I'll try Theseus again, but hope my suggestions are of interest. May also look at See Jane Run recommended above.

The Circle by Dave Eggers.

Everyone I know who has read this loved it. It's an absolute page turner and doesn't die in the last third, as most thrillers seem to do. A film is being made of it - I think Tom Hanks is in it. Female hero(ine) though so it's not all derring do.
