50 Book Challenge 2016 Part One

southeastdweller · 01/01/2016 08:45

Thread one of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2016, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

Who's in for this year?

Count me in, haven't read in ages and want to get back into it. Have started with Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell (a present from one of my daughters)

Me, joined last year but got a bit sidetracked with issues in real life and lost my reading mojo. Not getting put much I have lost track with what good books are out there, so as well as revisiting old classics looking for new inspiration as well.

Count me in! I'm almost at the end of an audiobook and half way through a kindle book.

Will they count on my list? Really need to get to 50 this year!!

Just logged on to mark my place on this thread Grin

Want to read 80 this year and try out new authors.

Feeling very frustrated as a busy Christmas and being away with friends over New Year has meant very little reading - as soon as I open a book I get talked at Angry
2 days to go before I can read as I wish.

Started The Year of the Runaways by Sunjeev Sahota.

I'm in! I start maternity leave in 6 weeks so hope to have a bit more time to read. Im reading the new Bill Bryson: The Road to Little Dribbling and really enjoying it. I'm not sure I will get to 50 with a new baby but will enjoy trying.

Yay! I have been waiting all morning for this thread to start do I can join. Grin

A couple of months ago I started an a-z challenge where I am working through the alphabet with authors I haven't read before to get me out of a rut. I am on E at the moment.

I want to combine it with the 50 book challenge to keep some momentum and get me through the less exciting books.

Happy new year everyone!

I'm in. Bought myself a clock radio to help with my resolution not to bring iPad or iPhone to bed - was using phone as an alarm but spending way too long on MN etc so not reading.

Joined Good Reads too.

I will jot down recommendations but my resolution is to read all the books I have in the house unread already and those on my Kindle.

Currently reading The Good Girl by Fiona Neill.

I'm in, although as I said on last thread a lot of my "reading" is actually listening via audible - anyone else?

I am however currently reading how to do everything and be happy following a recommendation on MN

Signing in for 2016 :) Happy New Year.

I'm currently reading The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson (a Christmas present) and enjoying it very much.

I'm also a fan of audio books, Project - I have a subscription to Audible. They count towards the 50 books, as do rereads and children's books (of novel length rather than picture books). I'm currently reading a Moomin book to DS which will get listed on here.

Hi, I'm in. I've always been a prolific reader but need to stop wasting so much time on Mumsnet and get back into it!

I've just started 'Chance' by Peter Dudgeon. It was only 99p on Kindle so worth a bash. So far it's quite a gripping read, looking forward to getting on with it.

I'm going to try and not let big books intimidate me this year so later in the month I'm going to tackle Wolf Hall and I'm about to start Untold Stories, by Alan Bennett. The Magus looks interesting too. I read 78 (mostly short-ish) books last year but this year I expect my final 2016 number to be around 60.

I'm joining at the start for once. I'm going to try and read one new book and then one from my huge list of unread Kindle books or it is just going to keep growing.

I'm currently reading Before We Met by Lucie Whitehouse from the Kindle pile.

I am in too.

Just started The Lives of Others by Neel Mukerjee. Wanted it for Christmas last year and then never read it. This will be the year.

I'm in again, family issues meant I didn't post much last year but got to about 45ish... Not very impressive for myself I don't think!

My aim this year is to get to 75 books, by at least 50 different authors and as many different 'styles' as I can.

I have started on number 1 already this am: The Ice Twins - S K Tremayne

Really want to get some grittier reads under my belt, and read some meatier books than the usual chic lit fallback!

Am deep into Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie and it is vvg so far!

I'm in again.

I fell off the thread last year at about the 40 mark. Don't know why as I kept reading (obviously).

Southeast - envious of you reading Untold Stories - I read it a couple of years ago now (did take me quite a while). I had borrowed my dad's hardback copy but it was massive and I couldn't bear the thought of lugging that around with me so got it on kindle instead Blush.

I'm planning a reread of Wolf Hall so I can refresh my memory and read Bring Up The Bodies. Have also got The Crimson Petal and The White and A Suitable Boy, and a couple of lengthy history books about the Plantagenets and Tudors waiting patiently on my Kindle. 2016 is the year of tackling long books for me too.

I'd like to join. I set my own target of 25 books last year and managed 21, I'm pleased. I've enjoyed reading this thread over the last 2 years and want to contribute this year. Great if I reach 50! I'm starting 'Station Eleven' today, needless to say I read about it on here.

I am in again this year. I read loads last year thanks to this thread. Will be aiming for 60 books. First is Shirley by Charlotte Bronte which is for a book group.
