Really struggling with it. Am halfway through it and it just seems such a slog does it get better - unsure if I am going to carry on with it

I really enjoyed it, found it a page-turner. Very good story, but if you're not enjoying it give up. Life's too short to struggle through books you're not enjoying when there's so many more out there. Maybe this one isn't your cup of tea? Does have a good ending though. I didn't guess it.

I enjoyed it, though I'd expected to hate it. It's typical of her in that she doesn't use one word if she thinks she can get away with seven or eight instead, but she still managed to keep my interest and I like her PI chappie.

I liked it, too. Having successfully avoided Harry Potter stuff, this was the 1st book I read by J K Rowling. Surprisingly good characterisation, interesting plot.

One thing I was a bit 'meh' about was the old style ending where the detective figures everything out and tells it as it is to the reader. I much prefer how in recent crime fiction, events slowly unfold and the reader figures things out through the eyes of the detective, rather than be told about it all at the end.

I quite liked the old style ending - it was Poirot-esque and I'm rather fond of old HP! :)

He's a freak - he reads so, so slowly and dissects every word on first reading, whilst I gobble it all down first and then go back to digest it on re-reads, if I think it warrants it.

I did find it slow to begin with but then I really got into the characters and loved it by the end.

Stick with it a few more chapters just to make sure it a not for you

I guessed too, my husband thinks that authors 'allow' us to guess the ending so that we feel clever and insightful. I disagree, I just think we ARE clever and insightful

I can't get into Cuckoo's calling at all and found a casual vacancy hard going too.

I find her characterisation a bit childish, which was fine and actually unnoticeable in HP, because they are children's books. But all the HP characters comes out in her other books, just different names. Pissed off DI with a face "like corned beef" is basically Mr Dursley etc...

I think if I'd read it as simply Robert Galbraith before it was commonly known it was her I'd have pegged it for a JK wannabe.

I agree with Remuslupin-it was a very old-fashioned Agatha Christie style mystery. It reminded me of Ordeal by Innocence and Crooked House. I enjoyed it very much but had no expectations at all because I never read any Harry Potter.
