WoT Book 14, A Memory of Light, the final one <sob>

I've name-changed back :) I feel ridiculously emotional reading it at times - I started reading it when I was 15 (LoC was the newest out at that point) and I'm now 31 so a fair chink on my life has been spent reading, re-reading, re re reading and waiting for WoT books.
Anyone else reading it? TrillianAstra, Nooka, ShowofHands, TwoSunnyDays are a few names I remember from previous threads.
What do you think - I'm really enjoying it - I might do a reread once I've finished just so I can get the whole story in one big WHOOOSH

I was 18 when I got the first book out of the library and I have a strong memory of lifting it off the shelf. Little did I know that I would be reading the last book when I was 41. I had goose bumps when I bought it.

I really enjoyed it. It was so fast compared to the other books but I didn't mind - I just wanted to get to the end too. There were a couple of characters who didn't ring true to the way they were in the rest of the series, but some of them esp Rand, Egwene, Aviendha lived up to themselves.

I will definitely be reading the whole series in one go.

Have you read the Malazan series by Steve Erikson?

I didn't like Sanderson's Mat as much as RJ's but loved this book. My house is a mess and kids have been largely ignored for 5 days though. Oh, and I'm shattered as often I was only able to read in bed so up reading until 1am. The ending was actually a relief and a couple of characters who died (or seemed to have died) got me more than a little choked up but it all made sense really. I'm not going to say anymore about the ending thoguh for TheJoyfulPuddleJumper

I've just started my re-read - looking forward to being able to pick out bits that now make sense.

Never read the Malazan series, I take it you'd recommend reading it?

Yes to Malazan. It's very complicated, has a vast world, loads of characters, deep, deep history and is much more grown up than WOT. Definitely not Young Adult fantasy, but it grabs you in the same as WOT, leaving lots of loose ends and makes you work hard to keep up.

Most important has it finished? Grin

I'll check it out once I've finished the WoT re-read

Just finished retreading all the books except the new one, I can't quite bring myself to start it cause I know I am going to be devestated when it is all over! I have never lost myself so completely in any other book series

Swallowed I understand....you now the first paragraph of the first chapter 'The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.' I'm lsightly [embarrassed] to say I cried when I read that...it's the last time that I woudl read it for the first time iyswim. But do read it...it's so worth it

I'm halfway through. Loving it so far. Some of the characterisation is a bit Confused but the story is meeting my expectations.

Can we have a spoiler full discussion now?

Ok I can wait! It's good...not perfect, but a suitable ending :)

WoTmania · 05/02/2013 18:15

'A suitable ending' that's got a WoT ring to it Grin. I loved it. Just doing my big, full (full) re-read. I'm at the bit where they've just left Baerlon after Rand's encounter with the Fade and Moirain has done her big scary thing at the Children of the Light.

OK, now I can get it tomorrow a very dear nutter friend has taken DD1 (4) for a sleepover so tomorrow DD2 (2) and I are nipping into town to get it on the way to collect DD1.

My friend lives 4 mins walk away, the book is 15 miles away. That's on the way, right?

No idea why I said "dudes" there.

I finished my full re-read yesterday.

Is there a thread that is with spoilers?

Report
WoTmania · 15/02/2013 12:37

Not as far as I'm aware. I'm thinking about reporting and asking them to change the title to inlude spoilers. Or you could start a new one, or I could

This clear enough? I put both titles in full so it would be easy to search.

I'm two thirds of the way through Memory of Light and I'd like to join in the conversation, but daren't open the Spoilers thread.
It'd be nice to discuss the books with others - no one I know likes Fantasy!
