I wondered if anyone else had read this book? It's by a journalist, Katherine Boo, and it's about the lives of people living in a Mumbai Slum. It's terrific - really well-researched and moving, and gives you a feel for what life is like for people at the bottom of the heap in India. Despite being an incredibly sad story, it's completely unsentimental. Anyway, if you have read it, please tell me what you think, and if you haven't, I really want to recommend it. I've been lucky enough to read lots of very good non-fiction books this year but this is one of the best.

Sorry about the late reply! But yes I've just read this book and searched to see who else had read it. Agree with your assessment hackmum. Terrific and very unsentimental. I sometimes wished she would give me a bit of a pink sunset because it was uncomfortable to read at times - the relentlessness of the corruption. Even the nun was at it !

I came to the book because it was chosen by Meera Syal on R4's "A Good Read" and I believe it's now going to be staged as a play in London.

oh it's on already? I'm so late to the party. My post was two year's after hackmum and then I find the play has been on for a while!
Was it good?

Oh gosh, I clicked on this thread intending to join in - and then discovered I'd started it! Would also be interested to know whether the play was any good.
