A while ago a MNer mentioned reading Bill Bryson's passage on Winter Sports to her DS (and being unable to because it was so funny). I'm trying to get my DS to read more and think he would love Bill Bryson and this would be a good starting point so does anyone know which of the books this is from?

Possibly "Notes from a Big Country"? I re-read it recently and do remember a passage about winter sports.

If you want a really good laugh, try "Down Under" instead. It is totally hilarious, and oh, so true!

It's chapter 38 of "I'm a Stranger Here Myself". Smile

Down Under is one of the funniest books ever written.

How old is your ds?

I hadn't heard of I'm a Stranger Here Myself, and it turns out it's the name that Notes from a Big Country was published under in the US. So if the OP is in the UK, it will be Notes from a Big Country.

The first Bill Bryson I ever read (before he became really well-known) was Neither Here Nor There, about travelling to different European countries. One of the very few books to make me cry with laughter.

Oops - sorry for the confusion OP. Didn't realise it had a different name in the UK to here in Canada.

I love Bill Bryson- Your son might like the autobiographical book about his childhood. Can't remember exact title off the top of my head but it has "wonder kid" or something in it. Very funny. I read bits to my 10yr old and we were both laughing.

citronella - Here in Canada that one's called "The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid." No idea whether that's another one that has a different name in the UK, though.

It's the same name, lazydog, and I agree, it's a great read.

Thunderbolt kid is absolutely hilarious. I found myself nodding to so much of it, despite being an entirely different generation to BB. He is one of the great authors for self-deprecating imagery and I have pissed myself laughing many a time... Milton Milton's dad diving off the board?! Escaping the dogs in Down Under??
