I have just finished reading this unexpectedly fantastic book and just wanted to recommend it to other non fiction fans. Admittedly, I was sceptical when a friend first urged me to read it as I did (to my shame) think that it would be a whinge-fest about police bureaucracy, lenient sentencing, etc, but I was completely wrong.
The book follows PC John Donoghue's first year as a frontline officer (he came late to policing at age 40) but told from the humorous perspective of this profession. It is hysterically funny!! I laughed out loud so many times! It is also extremely well written, intelligent and sparkles with humanity. I couldn't put it down. You don't have to be in the police to enjoy this book either ; the characters, events and insights into human behaviour will hold mass appeal. Hugely entertaining and an ideal holiday read.
