Everyone has been slating the choice of Anne Hathaway as Emma, but who do you picture would be better?

I dont know why, but I always picture the woman that played Claire in Corrie, and Shane west from ER as Dex (and I know he is American, and not posh, but thats who I see in my head).

I see Kate Winslet as an older Emma, and David Tennant as Dex (or Will Young, but wouldn't have thought of him if I wasn't watching him).

Oooh, I can really see Shane West, he's got the 'cad' about him which is needed.

I think the girl who played the Emma-like character in Starter for Ten would have been good.

I only recently read it and couldn;t get the yorkshire lass who was in the latest apprentice out of my mind. Was she called Emma too?

The person in my head is just a mishmash of individuals but if I had to pick an actress it would be a young Gina McKee or maybe Carey Mulligan

I saw it on wednesday. Dexter was so totally how I imagined him in my head. I just felt cheated that Emma was all wrong. No idea who I think should have been emma but definitely not anne hathaway - her accent is rubbish.

I am now very very much in love with the man who played dexter, I loved him best older with the greying hair so seems the best is still to come in his appearance, sad to discover how much too young for me he really is though

I have not seen the film. I bought the book to see what the fuss is all about. And it blew me away. Much better than I expected and not the ending I thought it would be either.
Wow. Might have to see the film now but sometimes when I enjoy a book so much I don't like to see the film in case it sort of spoils the vision I have in my head of the characters

Sarah Smart. She was fantastic as a modern female Heathcliff character a few years ago. Great northern accent that is genuine too.

Or Felicity Jones who I think has real star quality.

Am going to see it tonight, but I imagined someone like Ruth Wilson in the role. She isn't Northern, but I expect she could do the accent well. I loved the book.

Romola Garai would have been a better Em than AH

Another one who imagined Kate Winslet. Really don't know why Anne was chosen!

I pictured Charlotte Coleman who played Scarlett in Four Wedding and a Funeral

Blimey, was just about to say Charlotte Coleman's sister as she used to be in Casualty.

Not seen film though on basis of hating book

Anyone watch the West Wing? For some reason when I read One Day my Emma was quite like the woman who played Amy Gardiner -but with a broad Yorkshire accent!

Unfortunately I think I imagined Dexter as a cross between my ex-boyfriend & Hugh Grant!

Yes to Kate Winslet and David Tennant. I wasn't all that impressed with the book and I definitely won't be going to see the film given everyone's opinions.

I thought the idea of Anne H was bad until people suggested Kate Winslet. Grin

I think an unknown from Yorkshire would have been the best idea.

Moulesfrites · 01/09/2011 18:57

I know she is not an actress, or from Yorkshire, but I imagine her as a kind of slimmed down Sarah Millican - down to earth, northern, no-nonsense??

bird yes absolutely! Although I'm another Carey Mulligan fan. I haven't seen the film - I couldn't put the book down and reread it over and over again (I was travelling alone so it was all I had for a week) and I feel cheated even by the advertising hoardings for it. The picture with Emma and Dexter all swept up in an embrace? That's not right at all - makes it look far too much like a love story, when for me it is (obviously) a love story, but it's not about their love, it's about them as people, if that makes sense

I loved the book till the ending Angry

Won't see the film as they always change things and I'll spend the whole time muttering to DH, 'They didn't do this in the book'

Although she's prob a bit old now, I actually pictured Emma a bit like the woman who played Lizzie in Pride and Prejudice. The Colin Firth one, not the Keira Knightley version. And Dex? Someone blonde and annoying although love the David Tennant idea. Maybe Daniel Craig?
