10,000 steps a day challenge. Anyone want to join me?

I've been trying to lose weight and also get a bit healthier. I've lost about a stone and a half, would ideally like to lose another one and a half. Have been trying to eat healthier and loosely following slimming world. I'm at a bit of a standstill weight wise so I thought I'd aim to increase my exercise see if I can shift some more weight that way.

So yesterday I bought a pedometer and I am going to aim for 10,000 steps a day. I'll also try to combine this with other exercise when I can.

Today so far I've done 7000. Would anyone like to join me and check in with progress or encouragement? smile

I'm 5:2ing and that's working great for me at the moment.

My DH is doing a charity trek in late Spring so, even though we have a dog that gets walked twice a day, we have been deliberately going on much longer, harder and faster walks.

I must have got really slow and lazy with the dog as the first sub hour, 4 miler we did the other day made all my joints ache. It's about 7500 steps according to my pedometer, and coupled with my other walks and general pottering about, I've been doing about 12,000 a day for a week now. I can really see the difference in my thighs already and I've managed to knock 9 minutes off the time in a week.

GoogleIsBad Thu 20-Feb-14 19:48:49

That's brilliant, sounds like you have been doing really well!

I've only done just over 8000 today so I've realised I will have to up my game tomorrow. I'm in for the night now, but I might walk around the house and up and down the stairs a few times! grin

It has made me more aware of my walking today, which can only be a good thing!

PamHalpert Fri 21-Feb-14 09:00:04

I'll join you smile

I recently got a fitbit. I didn't realise how little I moved!

I now march on the spot whilst washing up and cooking grin

I also walk round the living room whilst watching tv. Every little helps wink

GoogleIsBad Fri 21-Feb-14 09:55:40

Great, welcome aboard! grin

It is a fitbit I have too, I like that it links up to my phone. I ended yesterday with 8367 and that was a bit of walking on the spot and going up and down the stairs at home a few times!

I am at work just now, so will try to move about more and get away from my desk now and again and see if I can improve on yesterday.

GoogleIsBad Sat 22-Feb-14 11:23:27

Well I made the 10,000 target yesterday (with some walking around the house!!). Not quite so hopeful today, as I've mainly housework planned, but will see how it goes! smile

I have a fitbit too! I need to make sure I'm doing 10,000 steps a day so I'm in. Should we add each other on fitbit too?

I did almost 14,000 steps at work today. It was a long day!

coffeeinbed Sat 22-Feb-14 21:11:57

Is there an app for that?
off to search.

Earlybird Sat 22-Feb-14 21:18:55

I'm a fitbit owner too, so count me in on the '10,000 steps a day' club.

Fwiw, I did a hybrid aerobic pilates class yesterday (am so sore today!), that didn't even register on the 'very active minutes' tally. Seemed a bit unfair to have expended so much energy and not get any 'credit' for it!

Did you all manage your steps yesterday?

I had to walk around a bit before bed to walk sure I had done enough but I got there.
Day off work today so have to actually go for a walk i guess. Hopefully it stops raining!

Teaat3Ten Mon 24-Feb-14 09:49:51

Can I join in too? I have had my Fitbit since last August, but have only really been using it properly along with MyfitnessPal since Jan.

I don't very often get to the 10,000 steps a day, but any encouragement will help!
Only managed 5,437 yesterday so my aim is to beat that today.

PamHalpert Mon 24-Feb-14 10:09:03

I've only managed 10,000 steps twice I think so far blush. Really going to up it from today.

sunbathe Mon 24-Feb-14 10:14:50

I've also got a fitbit - iy was a Christmas present. Since getting it, I've been pootling along with a target of 5,000 a day.

Recently thinking about trying for 10,000 a day, so count me in!

Earlybird Mon 24-Feb-14 12:33:25

I think I did 10,000 yesterday but not absolutely sure. My fitbit registered 8200 at 17.00, and though I tried to get it to sync again before I went to bed last night, it never did. Not sure why.

When I lived in London, 10,000 steps a day was fairly easy because I walked most places. Now I live in a city with little (useful) public transportation, so I drive most places. Walking becomes a separate planned activity, which can be tricky to fit into a busy day.

Iwasagnome Mon 24-Feb-14 12:38:55

Yes off to find pedometer
Bit of a latecomer for today

PamHalpert Mon 24-Feb-14 13:10:08

I've just done a quick 4 mile walking workout on YouTube. I'm now up to 6970 steps so far today. Will make myself get over 10,000 today.

GoogleIsBad Tue 25-Feb-14 11:46:53

I have only managed to make the 10,00 steps once! I am mostly averaging between 7500-8,500. I am going to make a real effort today to make it. grin

Iwasagnome Tue 25-Feb-14 13:54:49

Not a good start -pedometer went through wash in jeans pocket!
Currently in a bowl of rice but I'm not hopeful.

Teaat3Ten Tue 25-Feb-14 16:12:08

Iwasagnome hope you managed to dry your pedometer out!
Well I managed 6,213 yesterday so a slight improvement on Sunday, today is looking good as have already passed that count. If I carry on like this by the end of the week I may hit the 10,000!
Keep walking everyone.

sunbathe Tue 25-Feb-14 20:34:16

I've only done 6,951 today but that's partly because my fitbit was charging this morning.

I left it charging overnight but it didn't charge, and I had to do the resetting with a pin thing.

GoogleIsBad Tue 25-Feb-14 21:56:06

Oh no, hope it dries out Iwas.

I have managed 13173 today, my best ever! I know there is no way I'll match that tomorrow! Feeling quite tired now! grin

I've done 10,600 today. I usually can manage ten thousand when at work but on my days off i have to put in some real effort.

robindeer Tue 25-Feb-14 22:21:43

I know someone who lost three stone doing this and drinking lots of water, I'd forgotten about that until reading this! I might try it myself!

sunbathe Wed 26-Feb-14 15:25:33

Well, I've just done 10,261 steps. grin A trip to town this morning and a mile on the treadmill now.

It's harder than I thought it might be. Just show how much I don't move normally, I suppose.

PamHalpert Wed 26-Feb-14 17:20:32

I've done 10292 so far today. Finally reached 10,000 again blush

Iwasagnome Wed 26-Feb-14 18:59:23

Amazing my pedometer has dried out in the rice so pleased-yay!
I did walk down to town today , round the town and up the hill (phew!) back again so think that would have been 10,000 ok based on previous experience
See you all tomorrow

sunbathe Wed 26-Feb-14 20:13:51

That's brilliant, Iwas. Glad it's working again.

sunbathe Thu 27-Feb-14 15:39:20

C

sunbathe Thu 27-Feb-14 15:40:41

Currently on 5,760. Hope to make it today. May have to get the wii out later.

How's everyone doing?

Iwasagnome Thu 27-Feb-14 15:46:34

4752 so far oh dear
Sitting in cafe at garden centre didn't help!

Only done 2196 so far. Just about to go to Ikea though so will rack up loads there!

Anyone know of a decent (free) iPhone app which counts your steps?

We got pedometers in work but they are rather shite (I've a 15 min walk from the train, it told me I'd done 2, yes a whole 2 steps yesterday morning). I'm not the only one having issues with it, so its not just me!

Tried Footsteps Free - it seemed to top out at 3,000 steps the other day and wouldn't restart that day.

PamHalpert Thu 27-Feb-14 20:30:38

I've done 12,109 so far today and for the first time ever, all the tiles on the fitbit dashboard are green and say champ grin

Sorry OnTheBottom, I don't know of any. Hopefully someone who does will be along soon.

GoogleIsBad Thu 27-Feb-14 22:00:32

Glad the rice trick worked!

After a rubbish day yesterday I've got 10100 today. Will try to reach 10000+ again tomorrow as I always seem to do much worse at the weekend smile

GoogleIsBad Thu 27-Feb-14 22:03:12

Sorry meant to say I've tried a few of the free iphone apps but they didn't seem to register properly.

Map my walk will give you distance walked and is quite accurate but really drains the battery. 10000 steps is roughly 5 miles.

Iwasagnome Thu 27-Feb-14 22:48:05

Ashamed to report 5866
Must do better!

LakeFlyPie Thu 27-Feb-14 22:57:32

I like the idea of 10000 steps but fear that I may talk myself into buying a Fitbit yet another MN inspired purchase

Can anyone persuade me to buy a cheaper reliable pedometer or convince me I really need a Fitbit grin
I'd be really interested to see how work days (I think I have quite an active job) compare to school run days.
Do you need to measure stride length for using a pedometer?
Will it measure all upstanding activity (so to speak) e.g. any exercise based jumping about like exercise DVDs etc?

Iwasagnome Fri 28-Feb-14 05:23:43

I've only just heard of Fitbit-it seems expensive---would be interested to know more about it
I use a Weight Watchers pedometer ,it's reasonably easy to set up and I got it when it was reduced
However I used to have one which was free from Special K
I have another one which was free through my local paper .Ive lost the instructions so will have to figure out how it works!
With the WW one I just keep it in my jeans pocket, the clip isn't very safe the pedometer tends to fall off!

11,500 yesterday (in and out of work is about 4,000, did an hour and ten mins walk in the evening)

Worked out that the crap pedometer works if you put a big safety pin on your waist and clip it to that - it gives it a little more movement, but it is more likely to stay on.

I've 2,500 so far today, and will get the same going home.

After work am heading to meet DD and we are going out, in a place that's a good 20 mins walk from where we meet - fingers crossed that activity covers about 5.000 steps (because I WILL be having wine so I am not doing an extra walk at 11pm at night to make up any shortfall!)

GoogleIsBad Fri 28-Feb-14 13:31:33

I do really like my fitbit, although I have only had it for just over a week. I have the fitbit one. I like that it syncs to my phone and I can see my activity and dashboard on there too.

I also use the band at night to monitor my sleep and I find that quite interesting to see when i wake, but I don't think there is any real benefit of this for me grin

I bought mine from a seller on ebay for half price, and it was brand new, but there are (or were the other week when I was looking) lots selling for half price or so that had only been used for a week or similar short periods of time.

Today I have done 4000, which was a walk into work and around the office etc, I will walk home and potter about the shops for a bit, so hopefully I wont have to do too much tonight to get me to the magic 10,000!

sunbathe Fri 28-Feb-14 22:32:47

Phew! Just managed the 10,000. Walking and running round the house to get the last couple of thousand in. Feel shattered.

Iwas - I like my fitbit for the alarm too. It vibrates on your wrist. I found it really effective for waking me up. I also log how much water I drink too. That's made me more conscious of how little I drink and now I make an effort to drink more.

Iwasagnome Sat 01-Mar-14 22:57:48

That's very keen of you
I forgot to use my pedometer until late morning and it's saying 5728 now so even if I guesstimate another 2000 it's not very good!
Time to up my game and make a bit more effort methinks

WholeNutt Sun 02-Mar-14 08:11:24

Count me in! I'm going to get a fitbit today, which should I get? I'm looking at the fitbit zip activity tracker rather than the wristband.

Fairyneuf Sun 02-Mar-14 08:34:24

Count me in too. Another Fitbit user here.

I've had it since December and it certainly works as an incentive to get moving. Although I've recently discovered I can jog my 10000 steps and then sit and mumsnet for the rest of the afternoon!

sunbathe Sun 02-Mar-14 09:40:32

The fitbit zip looks cool. I wanted the wristband as it's simple, and for the alarm function.

Tiredemma Sun 02-Mar-14 09:43:37

Are fitbits expensive?

sunbathe Sun 02-Mar-14 10:29:48

The fitbit flex is about £80. Not sure about the other types.

Amandaclarke Sun 02-Mar-14 11:57:18

OntheBottom - I use Endomondo on my iphone, it doesn't so much track steps but tracks miles and a mile is roughly 1,000 steps. This is useful if you are doing one walk a day like me, I walk my dog and try and do 3.5-4 miles and then I would hope that general moving about would bring that up to 5 miles or 10,000 steps.

WholeNutt Sun 02-Mar-14 13:50:07

I'm in! Just bought my fitbit zip, set it up and it says I've used 729 calories..how is that possible when I've only just set it up?!

Earlybird Sun 02-Mar-14 14:09:04

It has been a crazy week, so haven't had time to walk just for exercise - which means I didn't hit the 10,000 step target on most days. Next week is not nearly so mad, so should be able to achieve more.

Was chuffed to see I made 10,000 (and beyond) yesterday though - just through the course of my day. Whew! Glad that day is done.....

GoogleIsBad Sun 02-Mar-14 19:11:00

I'm at 8049 so far today so I will have a jog about later see if I can get to 10000 as I've not made it in a few days.

I wish activity could be tracked and turned into steps. I'm moving house in a few weeks so I'm trying to de-clutter and get rid of lots of stuff. Was so productive yesterday - filled 12 bin bags, dismantled a computer desk, pulled out cupboards, moved furniture. Ended the day totally exhausted at 2000 steps! grin

magentastardust Mon 03-Mar-14 17:58:54

Hi I just bought a Fitbit Zip so today is my first day on it-hopefull to make my 10000!
Loving that it syncs to my phone and to MyFitnessPal.

Have you started a Fitbit group -I noticed there was a Mumsnet one but wasn't sure how current it was?

Does anyone want to add each other on it for motivation?

WholeNutt Mon 03-Mar-14 18:23:57

Just over 12000 steps today, 700 of them were to get Haribo..that's not good is it.

magentastardust Mon 03-Mar-14 21:53:17

Haribo steps still count!

GoogleIsBad Mon 03-Mar-14 21:53:44

10,500 for me today!

I would be up for joining a fitbit group. Wouldn't know how to start one, but would sign up if someone explained how! smile

magentastardust Tue 04-Mar-14 17:41:11

I am up to 8500 so far today but had to do an exercise video to get my steps up ! It definitely motivates you to do more!

GoogleIsBad Tue 04-Mar-14 18:01:48

I am just over 7000 but have an exercise class tonight which should take me over.

It really does make you more aware of how much you are moving. I am going to really try to get 10,000 every day this week smile

Fairyneuf Tue 04-Mar-14 18:10:08

I'm up to just over 21,000 today. Determined to get to 30 so I'm off for a jog later.

GoogleIsBad Tue 04-Mar-14 22:41:53

Wow, well done, that's amazing! I'm just over 12,000 for today

GoogleIsBad Fri 07-Mar-14 07:28:27

How are we all getting on?

I've managed the 10,000 for 5 days in a row, aiming for the full week but weekends are usually my downfall! smile

magentastardust Fri 07-Mar-14 10:40:32

I managed 18000 yesterday because I had a Zumba class and had a pretty active day anyway. I do want to try and hit 10k as many days as I can. Just hope it eventually reflects on the scales!

hopebeyondreason Fri 07-Mar-14 16:43:12

Can I join? Inspired by this posting, I bought a Fitbit Flex and I'm really impressed. It is very motivating. I'm marking exam papers at the moment, which means I am pretty much glued to a chair. But I have made myself get up every hour or so and the dog has had a good walk, so I've already done about 8,000 steps, including over 30 mins of higher activity. Finally, something might get me moving more!!

magentastardust Sun 09-Mar-14 22:33:35

It gets quite addictive doesn't it! I find myself saying -okay you have your cup of coffee when you reach xxxx steps -it has really made me think about how much activity I do.
Nothing is left on the stairs now for going up stairs in one big trip-lots of little trips to up step amount and the house is looking tidier too smile

hopebeyondreason Mon 10-Mar-14 16:25:53

Yes, really addictive. I am managing about 12,400 steps per day and so far I have had the green lights every day. Walking the dog at a brisk pace sorts much of it out. I'm going to stick at this for a while and see if it has any effect on my weight (no sign so far!), and then up the target a bit.
