I am 4 stone over weight and it's making me very unhappy. I've been saying I'll lose weight for the last two years! Instead I've just gotten fatter.

I know most people don't keep up their new years resolutions but I am hoping having a thread on here will help.

If anyone is interested please feel free to join me. I will be using weight watchers but I would love anyone to join.

I intend to start on Jan 1st. I've bought
a nice diary to write my food in.

I'd love it if people could share meal plans and recipie ideas.

Thecircle Thu 26-Dec-13 20:02:28

I'm in!
I've got 4 stone to lose too. I lost a stone of it last year using my fitness pal but put it all back on.

I'm 5"4 and my tummy is huge. Went shopping today and literally nothing looked even half nice.

I'm determined!

TotallyAddictedToLurking Thu 26-Dec-13 20:50:55

Hi TheCircle. I'm having the same problem. I'm 5'3 and my stomach is horrible. I hate shopping and I have stopped taking care of my appearance.

I want to be me again.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs Thu 26-Dec-13 20:51:19

I'm in!

Was just thinking this would be a good target to aim for! If I lose 52lbs, I would be bang in the middle of the BMI healthy range :-)

Was going to go with plain calorie counting and a LOT of exercise... Although the 5:2 looks interesting as well but I need to do some more research on it, to be honest...

knittedslippersx3 Thu 26-Dec-13 21:12:10

I'm in! Not sure how much I need to lose (a lot!). Will weigh myself on the start date.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs Thu 26-Dec-13 21:17:08

... But I am starting on the 29th...

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs Thu 26-Dec-13 21:18:06

I will be 5:2ing it and training g fora marathon...

1Madhouse Thu 26-Dec-13 21:18:43

I'm in please. Have 3 st of baby weight to shift. Said baby is now 1 !!! Joining weight watchers ASAP and going to hit that gym again. Be good to have extra support in here. Am sooo tired of being the token fat friend !

mrselgar Thu 26-Dec-13 21:18:44

I would love to join you. I've got about 4 stones to lose. I have a back injury and may need surgery. Need to lose weight first. The difficult bit is not being able to walk or do any exercise. It will probably be very slow, but I would like to join you.

parabelle Thu 26-Dec-13 21:19:25

I'm in, will be nice to have company. I have been fat now for five years, really need to do something about it this year. Quit smoking last year. This year, it's losing weight.

Flisspaps Thu 26-Dec-13 21:20:34

I have 40lbs to lose but I'll join in - starting 5:2 with MFP tomorrow (myfitnesspal app for anyone wondering what MFP is with 30 day shred thrown in when I plateau.

ihearttea Thu 26-Dec-13 21:21:15

I'm in! 52lb would bring my BMI to the middle of the normal range; I haven't been 'normal' for years.

I'll try with MFP and see how that goes. I might join SW if I can't keep on track though.

Just got to get rid of all the naughtiness in the house first!

I'm in. Will be carrying on with 5:2, lost 2 stone this year

I may even add in some exercise grin

But im not doing my next fast til Sunday as I'm about to eat a large slice of Garlic Yarg - food of the GODS!

Cookiepants Thu 26-Dec-13 21:27:15

Me too please. Got 5/6 stone to lose and a big birthday coming up. Don't want to start another decade unhappy in my own skin hmm

cafebistro Thu 26-Dec-13 21:27:36

Me me me! I am a classic yoyo dieter. I would be interested to see other s way of losing weight.

Rumplestinkskin Thu 26-Dec-13 21:28:18

oh yes please I could really do with getting a grip on my weight this year..... gives me a few days to figure out which plan to follow (I've been successful with WW in the past, but I think I've got bored with it)

I'm in! DS is 9mo and I weigh more now than I did during my pregnancy. hmm

I have MFP too- forgotten all about it. I used to love scanning in all the barcodes!

Sunshinelaulau Thu 26-Dec-13 21:33:41

I'm in! Have about 7-8 stone to lose and it gets worse every year but determined to have no more excuses and get my arse into gear.. Will wait for my birthday to pass 3rd jan and then I'm on it... Will be joining sw as soon as... It will b lovely having this support smile

Chants73 Thu 26-Dec-13 21:37:03

I'm in....have lost weight and regained on so many diets, I think I just need to go slow and steady and make permanent life style changes so it lasts....no idea what I weigh at the moment

StupidMistakes Thu 26-Dec-13 21:39:26

Im starting my diet on January 2nd. I want to lose about 2 and a half stone and lots of belly tbh. I am joining the gym a week later but cutting out all chocolate and sweets for the first week eating only when hungry not cos of being bored n seeing what happens

PlusSizeHorror Thu 26-Dec-13 21:52:12

Me!! x 10000

slow and steady is the way to go (personally)

The thought of being 130 lbs this time next year is heady.

I will be doing 5:2 for diet and not sure what to do for exercise yet.

WhyIRayLiotta Thu 26-Dec-13 22:04:27

I'm in too! 52 lbs would bring me to a size 12. I'm ashamed of how out of shape I've become in the last few years. I'm hoping to get married at the end of next year and I'd like to look more like I did when I met DP, not the overweight, mumsy person I feel like now.

c00k1e Thu 26-Dec-13 22:07:25

I'd like to join in too. If that's ok. I have 4 stone plus to lose sad will start 2nd jan

I'm in!

Going to make a plan!

Rollermum Thu 26-Dec-13 22:19:36

Great idea! I'm in. I have more than that to lose (62lbs) but would be a great start! I'm a terrible yoyo dieter but now am breastfeeding I need to do something less extreme.

I am planning to do Slimming World as a trial to see if I can lose on it. If after a month I haven't I will focus on giving up sugars.

Good luck everyone!

I'm in. I'm 27 as of a week ago and have decided that this year I need to lose 27lbs (twice) randomly that is nicely 54lbs so fits in well with this.

I'm starting 2nd Jan grin

Im in!!

I was doing Zumba once a week in the run up to Christmas but ni change in my eating so im upping it to two classes a week starting Jan and changin eating plans.

Ooh if I am successful, it will bring my BMI down to middle of healthy weight.

Do you think we should do Stats and agree a "weigh in day"?

So, confession time. I currently weigh 14st2. Losing 52lbs would put me at 10st6. I am 5'8" tall, so that would take me from a BMI of 30.2 to 22.2

Not very nice seeing it all written down like that. I'm going to weigh myself before breakfast on Monday mornings, and try not to step on the scales in between times.

Think I'm going to try the 5:2 diet and start running again, there is a local 5k in March that I want to do.

Gulp. And I made a bet with my husband - first to 52lbs weight loss gets £52 from the loser! He DOES NOT like to lose, so we'll see how that goes...

overthebliddyhill Thu 26-Dec-13 22:27:35

Can I be in? I have 4 st to lose starting jan 2nd and will be following SW.

overthebliddyhill Thu 26-Dec-13 22:28:16

Oh and yes , we should have a weigh in day.

Oh, and if anyone wants to PM me your MFP user name, we can egg each other on?

How many calories in an egg?

TheDietStartsTomorrow Thu 26-Dec-13 22:33:23

I'm in please. Thank God- I was hoping for a thread like this.

I need to lose about 30lbs but 40lbs would bring me to the middle of my healthy BMI. I'd previous lost 4 stone and have now put two of those back on again. I've been eating like a pig.

I'll be starting on Monday 40th January because I like to weigh in Monday mornings. I'm going to start off with Bob Harper's Jumpstart to Skinny plan for the first three weeks which promises 10lbs loss in 3 weeks. I've used it before and was surprised at how well it worked. I'll team that with a daily run and 30DS. I'll decide what happens next after the three weeks are over.

How are we going to do this? Post daily updates? Link up on MFP?

Just installin MFP now.

Wonder how much I can loose just by drinking only water and tea instead of a glass.of wine / beer each evening and a can of coke every day?

LittleBearPad Thu 26-Dec-13 22:36:13

I'm in. I'm sick of everything wobbling. Starting 6th January due to a late Christmas with parents.

Well, coke and a large wine is 410c. You need to create a deficit of around 3500c to lose 1lb (it's roughly that, depends on your metabolism a lot), so if you cut it out, you'd lose 1lb every 9 days. Ish.

TooTabooHasBigShinyBaubles Thu 26-Dec-13 22:41:58

I'm in. Will do it with slimming world albeit without going to class.

I lost a stone in 6 weeks when I joined in Aug this year. Unfortunately PND took over and it all went tits up around Nov sad

I felt great when I was in the healthy eating/exercise zone. I want to feel that way again.

MFP username gemmbopastie.

5'3, 183lbs gah!!, 28yo.

I say it is baby weight - DD is two blush

Ooh thats good wood in addition to other healthy eating. Im a total class avoider so cant picture myself attending a group, amd with my shiftwork I never get the same.night off each week.

I did try a couple.of Asdas pre prepared light meals (in a sort of steamer bag) which were really tasty amd filling so may stock.up.on them for my work.meals

Im in! Have about 2.5 stone to lose and starting 1st of Jan!!

this range from.ASDA filling and tasty

popserinis Thu 26-Dec-13 22:53:11

Me too. I have 3 stone to loose. Starting 2nd jan, hope to make a good start by doing the dryathalon in Jan. Good luck peeps x

YouAreMyRain Thu 26-Dec-13 22:57:06

I'm in too! I have more than 52lbs to lose and I will be trying the 5:2 diet.

I used to run (sob), now I am the fattest and most unhealthy I have ever been. I have a beautiful 13 week old baby boy to show for it but I am still wearing maternity clothes blush

MrsKwazii Fri 27-Dec-13 00:19:22

Count me in please. I'm already signed up to Slimming World online and have lost 20lbs to get back down to 14st 3lbs, would love to get back down to around 10 1/2 stones. I can't make it to a weekly group so online is working, but having a weekly weigh-in here would be extra motivation to keep on the straight and narrow.

Floralnomad Fri 27-Dec-13 00:34:27

I'm in , not sure how much I need to lose as I don't weigh myself but I'm restarting the 5:2 in jan having let it lapse the last few months . Joining the rest of you will keep me motivated I'm sure .I don't drink alcohol and found that last time just cutting out fizz and drinking weak squash made quite a difference , I'm also still trying to sort out my thyroxine dose so that will help as well .

garlicbaubles Fri 27-Dec-13 00:42:02

Oh, what a good idea! I don't diet. Ever. But I like the thought of dropping nearly 4 stones throughout the whole year (I've got just over 4 spare), so am putting this thread on watch smile Thanks, TATL.

Nessalina Fri 27-Dec-13 00:49:42

Ok, I'll give it a go! I need to lose at least 2 stone, but more like 3 confused

chubbymummy Fri 27-Dec-13 05:13:03

I'm in!
I'm only 5ft2 and when I weighed myself yesterday I cried. I've crept up to 15stone and as well as looking like crap it's seriously affecting my health. I ache all over, get out of breath walking up stairs, struggle to paint my toenails and I've started getting heartburn at night. I'm so ashamed that I've let myself get into this state.
I love food and hate exercise so this isn't going to be fun but I've got to do it or else I dread to think how big I'll be by next Christmas.
I think I need to change my username, Chubby really doesn't cover it!

chubbymummy Fri 27-Dec-13 05:32:05

Right, just signed up to myfitnesspal as chubbymummy1976.

TheDietStartsTomorrow Fri 27-Dec-13 06:34:52

YouAreMyRain, I used to run too. In fact, I loved running. I'n not sure what happened and why I stopped but I gained two stone since I stopped.

chubby I'm 5'1/5'2 too and started off at 12.5 stone. I've lost some now but it's made such a difference to my life. Need to get back on track. You can do it.

I'm doing my first fast day today on 5:2. Not sure how this is going to go - I love my food. Which is, of course, why I'm 4stone overweight...

Not sure running on an empty stomach is a good idea, so will save dusting off the trainers for tomorrow. Except we have family staying this weekend, not sure if it would be rude to go for a run while they are here? Either that or SIL will want to come with me and she is disgustingly fit and runs 50km mountain races etc. I would have no chance!

2 boiled eggs for breakfast. No croissants or toast <sob>

I've added those on MFP who put their usernames up :-)

delbee Fri 27-Dec-13 07:47:21

I'm insmile, will be starting SW ( again). I have about 2 1/2 stone to lose. I can't get to a group so looking forward to keeping up with you all. MFP name is adele_30. X

MFP username is gingerchubs.

I do not have any scales in the flat, so I guessed pretty high- will get myself a set in town.

I'm going to add you to MFP now smile

I cant seem to add anyone on MFP who isnt a FB or phome cntact, but I can accept requests from those who want to add me grin

delbee Fri 27-Dec-13 09:07:10

Myname I'm having the same problem hmm

Hollyandbooze Fri 27-Dec-13 09:16:26

Me too.

I weighed myself yesterday and I am 12.7. I'm only 5.4 so I definitely need to lose at least 2.5 st. Or 35lbs.
I would love to be 9st 12 before my next birthday.

That would be amazing!

Sunshinelaulau Fri 27-Dec-13 09:26:18

MFP name lasunnyha... Can't add anyone either hmm

YeahBuddy Fri 27-Dec-13 09:32:11

I'm in - I lost loads of weight when I was pregnant (was too fat anyway) and I looked and felt great! Now I've put it all back on again and feel like shit sad
The evenings are my main downfall though, I'm a LP and when the DTs have gone to bed I just veg on the sofa and eat. I'm going to have a look at the 5:2 and make a resolution to not buy or eat any more rubbish starting Jan 2nd.

delbee Fri 27-Dec-13 09:33:13

The only way I have managed to add people is if someone has requested me first, then look on their new friends list. You can see them and click on their name to request them. Otherwise I can't do it. Xx

For those having trouble adding people, in the bit where it says 'add with email address', you can type the user name in the email address box and that works.

Youarejustwordsonascreenpeople Fri 27-Dec-13 09:52:39

I'm another one trying to lose weight this year. I don't have a working pair of scales so don't know how heavy I am. I have a lot of flab where I have had three kids and have had a lot of health problems.

I can't get out to a gym or run so we've bought an elliptical trainer and hope to use it each day as well as change what we eat. I've just been to sign up for Weight Watchers as it is free membership for a while but it still costs £60 for three months. Can anyone tell me if it is worth the money and will it be worth the £80 in three months?

We both work and I use my slow cooker a lot as it is late when I get in and I quite often feel too tired to cook a meal.

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 09:57:22

Count me in, 2014 is the year I am going to do it.

Newsofaarrived Fri 27-Dec-13 09:59:16

Right, we're joining too! I've allowed the weight to creep on over the last 14 years, compounded by stressful years of infertility. Now got a 5 year old and lost weight having him, but went back to work and the spread continued!

Hubbie has finally admitted he has a tummy too, so 2 pronged attack here!

This thread is really motivating me...!

Which day will we "weigh in"?

I think I've added everyone on MFP. As mentioned above, where it says enter email you can just add username instead. It's not very clear.

Can anyone recommend a decent fitness DVD? There are so many and do not know where to start....!

Youarejust, if I remember rightly the WW members website is very handy- you can enter your foods and it works out the points for you. There's an app too that syncs with website. I likes it when I was a member, but that was a while ago now.

lifesgreatquestions Fri 27-Dec-13 10:12:52

God I need help, I'll join! I even gave in this year and bought big clothes and now I've out grown them! I made a real effort for a few months earlier this year. I developed fitness and tone but didn't loose a single pound and found it really demotivating.

lifesgreatquestions Fri 27-Dec-13 10:14:28

Oops, don't know how I posted twice!

I've just reread the thread. I can't do the 5:2 or run so those are out. I'll check out mfp, sw and ww as well as bob Harpers jumpstart to skinny. I'm going to check out classes at my local community centre, get some scales and I've decided to keep this a secret. I don't need the world watching my struggle so the support here will be invaluable.

My weight gain came from 3 miscarriages and the resulting depression. I am now old, fat, childless... I can only change one of those so here goes.

As for someone asking for DVD recommendations I found the 30 day shred really god for getting fitness levels up quickly.

HoLilyChristmas311 Fri 27-Dec-13 12:12:33

I'll join as well. I need support. Aiming for calorie counting and exercise. Need to lose over 2 stones.

1Madhouse Fri 27-Dec-13 12:15:48

Purchased my weightwatchers mag and found out the class times for the meetings. But will start my diet on 2nd Jan. Going to rejoin gym and become the gym bunny I was 2 yrs ago. Did go spinning @6.45 am this morning and feel better for it. Can't wait to get back in my size 10/12 clothes again.

Grrrr. Maybe I should tell DH when I'm supposed to be fasting as I got back from town to find he'd scooped up all the leftovers and made another roast turkey meal.

Reader, I'm afraid I ate it all as my willpower is not that strong.

Mental note to self, notify chef when meals not required...

We have family coming this weekend as well, meal plan says turkey, leek and ham pie tomorrow and some sort of baked risotto on Sunday. Back to work on Monday.

At least I only had 2 eggs for breakfast, not 4 slices of thickly buttered toast, orange juice and the kids leftover porridge... Can anyone take a wild guess as to why I'm 4 stone overweight LOL!

So, no tea for me tonight as I think I've eaten all today's calories, but on the plus side I might charge my Garmin and dust off the running shoes for tonight seeing as I've actually eaten food today.

<end confession>

glinda Fri 27-Dec-13 12:45:17

Count me in. Off to buy new scales as old ones are madly unreliable (step on and off and back on and weight can change by 10lbs!). Need to lose around 6 stones I think. (GULP).
I hit 50 in Jan 2015 and I am not going to fat and fifty.

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 12:59:26

Right, I've ordered new scales which I will get tomorrow thanks to the free trial of amazon prime they offered me for December.
I have a holiday planned and I need to lose weight for it or we'll all miss out on some stuff that I won't be able to do. Motivation is not my strong point though....
glinda I have about 6 stone to lose as well and, like you, I do not want to be fat and fifty so I need to get a move on.

DrSeuss Fri 27-Dec-13 13:03:14

I'm in! I shall be using WW with a bit of 5;2 thrown in! Have just been perusing Aldi/Lidl for fitness related offers. Probably three stones or a bit more to come off.

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 13:03:58

I am katyd49 on MFP if anybody wants to add me

didireallysaythat Fri 27-Dec-13 13:17:05

Count me in. I've done WW in person before but I can't get to mtgs now. Is WW online worth it or should I just MFP it ?

I've done this before. I'll do it again. I remember how good it feels to take back control !

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 13:21:09

Thanks...It seems that I can accept invites but not send them, perhaps because I haven't linked FB?

Someone on here said they will be weighing Monday AMs so shall we just follow that? Might be a good motivator for the week ahead too.

I have the 30day sjred dvd still in its wrappings so.will open that 1st Jan. Need trainers as ive been zumbaing in my converse and camt carry on.

spleenyone Fri 27-Dec-13 13:45:56

I'm in. Need to lose 4 stone.

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 13:47:01

Monday would be good, like you say with the week ahead. It gives a few days from the 1st as well, assuming some folk are starting them? I am kind of starting now by being reasonably sensible (I just turned down the offer of a bacon sandwich as I wasn't hungry, I would have said yes a few days ago) but i will be finishing off xmas goodies and binning what is left on the 1st.

Yes, also syarting officially from the 1st, but am tracking on MFP from today - trying to pick sensibly but know I have til the 1st.

DH wants a Chinese take away tonight - anyone know what the most sensible option would be?

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 14:08:39

Maybe a side of vegetables and some boiled rice?

Ooh I will look forward to that grin grin

delbee Fri 27-Dec-13 14:27:04

Octopus I've added you on mfp. I will be starting as of 2 jan. I've got a ny day party to go to.

octopusinasantasack Fri 27-Dec-13 14:29:39

Ken you can have it spicy and with a sauce, get the flavour that way? I have water chestnuts with bamboo shoots with chilli and ginger, then have rice with garlic or something. Lots of flavour and most places are happy to add spices for you.

NewYearsHeave Fri 27-Dec-13 14:36:48

I'm in. I lost 3 st two years ago and am in danger of putting it all back on. Nearly a st so far shock. I could do with some support to get healthy again.

NewYearsHeave Fri 27-Dec-13 14:37:38

I'm doing mfp too and don't mind adding folk.

NewYearsHeave Fri 27-Dec-13 14:38:59

MyNameIsKen - I'd go for a foo young. Eggs are high protein and not too unhealthy. I found that one of those was filing even without rice.

What about a Chop Suey?

level3at6months Fri 27-Dec-13 14:42:28

Yes, I'm in too. I've used MFP before - this time last year, funnily enoughblush but I really, really need a kick to get the weight moving before I'm stuck like this forever.

Yes, I am in!!
5 years ago I lost 6 stone. I have since put roughly 4 of them back on. I feel and look awful sad

I have no working scales though. And even if I did I would be terrified to get on them.
This could be a problem, right?

Oh, and is it better to log via diary (which I have had success with) or log on MFP (which I have had success with)

What are the majority of you all doing?

atomicyoghurt Fri 27-Dec-13 14:44:54

I'm in, I promised myself I'd like weight in 2013 and I've got fatter instead. So depressed about it. I went on a thread for losing before Christmas but someone put me down and I quit.

I sound needy! I'm not needy I've been pathetic I need to get my act together!

I haven't weighed myself recently but I'm going to start on the 4th Jan (when I'm back home). I'm guessing I need to lose about 2 stone.

5:2, MFP, davina DVD and taking up jogging (I can't run 100m yet, but I'm going to aim for 10k)

Come on! We can do this! 2014 is our year!

atomicyoghurt Fri 27-Dec-13 14:48:39

I've got the sane name on MFP please add me if you can I can't work out how to do it!

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

madasa Fri 27-Dec-13 14:52:25

I'm in....not sure how I'm going to do it yet but I'm in

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

JaquelineHyde Fri 27-Dec-13 15:09:09

I'm in, I need to lose about 9 stone.

I have lost 9 stone already (it was 10 stone but I've put 1 back on since having dc4)

I will be kicking off on January 2nd and for the first month I am giving up chocolate, crisps and fizzy drink all together (my 3 major weaknesses).

Froblawd Fri 27-Dec-13 15:11:18

I'm in!

CecyHall Fri 27-Dec-13 15:30:53

I'm in. I have more than 52lb to lose but that seems like an achievable start to not put too much pressure on me.

Is there an agreed weigh in day?

I will be low carbing (mainly because I want to sort out my skin too)

justonemorecake Fri 27-Dec-13 15:32:07

I'm in!

I have about 6 stone to lose. I weigh more now than I did 14 months ago when I had my dd. Too much cake eating during maternity leave!

I'm thinking of using myfitnesspal.

Ok, will dust off my MFP membership.

My name on there is petd, feel free to add me smile

PowderMum Fri 27-Dec-13 15:46:05

I'm in, really need to lose 1.5lb a week but 1lb will be a good start.

I had a hysterectomy this year so need to work on my fitness too

I'll be using my fitness pal, eating healthy food with slimming world tendencies. If I don't shift the weight I'll be considering one of the VLCD.

I'm starting on Jan 6th and will be giving up alcohol and chocolate.

Loads of people! Yay! For those having trouble with MFP, if you put a user name in the "add via email" box, it will work. For some reason this isn't obvious at all, but it is the quickest way :-)

I don't want to give out my user name as it will certainly out me IRL and I don't want anyone there to know that I'm doing this... I've had pointed comments (why DO people do that?!?) so this time I'm doing it all myself.

PuggyMum Fri 27-Dec-13 16:11:22

I'm in. I need to lose 4st officially but if I lose that I won't look like me. I'll be happy with 3. I'm 14st and 5'4" and just had my first baby 14 weeks ago.

I weigh 3lb less than when I got pg so a great place to start!

shutitthepresentsareinthere Fri 27-Dec-13 16:17:46

I'm in. I got 5 stone to lose. Big birthday this year too and want to treat myself. Lost 2 stone on ww a while ago but 2 babies later gained a lot more. Going to buy a lovely food diary and work from there

PuggyMum Fri 27-Dec-13 16:23:07

Just reset mfp. I'm ang3367. I'm 7lbs heavier than when I originally set it up hmm

MerylStrop Fri 27-Dec-13 16:24:59

I need to do this. I think 52lbs in 52 weeks sounds great!
5:2, hot yoga and swimming for me
I need to do this gently, have had a v stressful 2013 and need to do this without putting pressure on myself to have quick or dramatic results. Hopefully good for my mind too.

justonemorecake Fri 27-Dec-13 16:26:46

Does anyone have any good exercise tips? I really struggle for time when it comes to exercise, but I'm thinking of using the 7 minute workout app on my phone and also starting the Couch to 5k plan.

My myfitnesspal username is Alibialibi. I'll try adding other people if I can get it to work!

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

harryhausen Fri 27-Dec-13 16:33:58

I'm in too. This HAS to be my year. I must get my head around this.

I'm 4 stone overweight. I've flirted with 5:2, Slimming World, Couch to 5k and eating mindfully this past year. I lost a bit but never stuck to anything for longer than a month or so. I keep self sabotaging. I have no idea what's up with my head. I may even consider counselling for this.

I think I'll be doing Couch to 5k and eating mindfully/smaller portions.

I want this so much. Everything else in my life is great. It's just this is on my mind at all times and it's ruining my enjoyment of thingshmm

Bithurt Fri 27-Dec-13 16:47:48

I'm in too. I have about 4 stone to lose too. I have the app 7 minute workout but have never used it. I'm also doing slimming world.

RachaelAgnes Fri 27-Dec-13 16:50:46

I'm in! Doing 5:2 and want to try the 'Couch to 5k' to see if I can find the love for running I used to have!
Are we weighing in on Mondays?!

I've added everyone so far, once you have accepted me you should be able to see others on my friends list and add from there?

Any tips for conquering the kids leftovers trap <sob>

It's one of my biggest pitfalls...

Couch to 5k and 30 day shred for me on the exercise front. Done both before, but hopefully this thread will give me motivation to continue for more than 2 weeks...

Bithurt Fri 27-Dec-13 16:53:31

I get weighed on a Tuesday morning so I'll add mine then if that's ok. I joined a gym a few months ago and have been once. Best dust it off again! I'm 5'2'' and about 13 stone.

Mondays seems to be a good weigh in day for most people?

Carriemac Fri 27-Dec-13 16:57:43

I'm carriemacer on mfp

TalkinPeace Fri 27-Dec-13 16:58:13

52lb in 52 weeks is a REALLY GOOD target.
And delighted to see that several of you are planning to use 5:2

do, please read this thread
as it has lots of ideas

and remember that the Mumsnet threads on 5:2 predate ALL of the websites, books and products.

Important hint about Myfitnesspal
Do not add back any calories from exercise. Ever. At all.
Because we are all prone to under estimating food and over estimating exercise.
If you get into the habit of 'allowing extra' the magic will not work.

Oh yeah - and each of you take a selfie today - full body in front of the mirror.
Because many of the ladies and gents on the 5:2 threads who have done really well do not have proof of where they came from.
This time next year you'll have the proof of the lack of pudding fgrin

madasa Fri 27-Dec-13 17:08:08

I'm madasa123 on mfp

NewYearsHeave Fri 27-Dec-13 17:11:19

I can do Monday weigh in too smile

TalkinPeace Fri 27-Dec-13 17:13:22

Can I be really boring and suggest that you might want to switch your weigh ins to Friday ....

as its easier to be strict all week and relax at the weekend - so you weigh in on a high note, not the day after Sunday Roast fwink

TotallyAddictedToLurking Fri 27-Dec-13 17:16:44

Oh wow I haven't RTFT yet but I'll come back later and have a read.

I weigh in on a Tuesday but that's ok we can all weigh whenever. I'm just happy that we can all keep each other company and on the straight and narrow grin

Sorelip Fri 27-Dec-13 17:40:40

I'm in. I have 39lb to lose, and I'll be doing 5:2 and doing the 30 day shred once my stomach muscles are up to it.

Friday weigh in would suit me best but am happy to go with majority vote smile

Oh, and have 44lbs to lose so am certainly in!!

(stepped on the scales for the first time in 16 months just now. Scary!)

TotallyAddictedToLurking Fri 27-Dec-13 17:48:00

I'm so glad you are all in. I wasn't expecting so many takers.

I just keep thinking about how good I'd feel next Xmas having lost 4 stone!!!

I am starting on 1st Jan but I won't have an official weight until 7th. I'm dreading the weigh in. I haven't weighed myself for a few months. It's going to be a lot. I can feel it on my stomach sad

I need to start a plan. What I'm going to eat for my three meals and snacks. I get bored easily so I need to make sure that doesn't happen.

kaytola Fri 27-Dec-13 17:48:31

I'm in! I'll be doing SW and a lb a week like a good target. Happy to weigh in whenever.

CecyHall Fri 27-Dec-13 17:49:49

I'd prefer a Monday weigh in so I'm less likely to dick around at the weekend and get too lax (weekends are my big Achilles heel) but again I'm happy to go with the majority.

Jenijena Fri 27-Dec-13 17:58:26

Yes! I'm in. I'm ttc #2 and I'm guessing 4 stone overweight at least. Never ever been out of the obese zone as an adult.

Please add me as a friend- I'm jenijenaj

Jenijena Fri 27-Dec-13 18:00:04

Trying to work out how to add people but can only add fb/twitter/phone book contacts?

justonemorecake Fri 27-Dec-13 18:02:13

I'll probably weigh myself on Fridays as it fits in best for me.

I'm going to admit my weight now as writing it down will hopefully motivate me to stick to this! I'm 5'8" and weigh 16 stone blush

My husband thinks I should start now and ignore all the Christmassy treats and choclatey presents we have in the house. I think I should wait until 1st Jan so all the treats will be gone and I can start afresh. What are other people doing?

PuggyMum Fri 27-Dec-13 18:07:22

Hi Justonemore. I'm like you. House full of treats and cheese.

I find I do log everything I am less inclined to lie to myself so I'm starting now. I won't not have any of the good stuff but it'll get me into the habit for the new year.

I've just done a few dances on just dance spurred on by this thread. And am now enjoying a cup of tea and a mince pie (not helpful sorry!).

ricericebaby Fri 27-Dec-13 18:17:29

I'm in. Will be starting January 1st. I'm 13st 9lb (I think - will have to weigh properly before we start) and I'm 5ft 7. Would like to lose 3 stone so that's 42lbs {gulp} Monday is a good weigh in day for me.

Will be doing MFP (been given 1250 cals a day) and DH bought me a years gym membership so I intend to use it!

Good luck everyone.

justonemorecake Fri 27-Dec-13 18:18:41

Yes I think I'll start being careful now but still eat some of the treats, and then get going properly in January. My husband thinks I'm just making excuses!

BumPop Fri 27-Dec-13 18:24:57

I am soooo in! Another short arse here, at my current weight I look like a ball. Even the Mr Maker shapes get me down "I am a circle". hmm

Aiming for a pound a week feels possible. I think 52 pounds would take me to mid healthy bmi and a size 12, which coupled with a few gym visits would be my pre preg size. (ds1 is 5.5).

I have just made the possibly lucky mistake of watching a film called earthlings which has put me off all meat, eggs and dairy. I don't know if it'll last, but today has been strictly vegan because of it. shock Pretty sure more fruit and veg is what I need though.

So, starting properly this Monday by which time I'll have new batteries for my scales. I'd prefer Monday weigh ins but happy to go with the majority.

We can do this!

HepsibarCrinkletoes Fri 27-Dec-13 18:37:22

Me. I'm in if you'll have me. I actually want to lose 26lb, so would live to join in for the first 6 months if that's ok. I NEED the motivation and joining in on a thread might just be perfect for me.

<flutters lashes>

Ratbagcatbag Fri 27-Dec-13 18:38:39

I'm in. Will read full thread later but don't want to lose the thread. smile

shutitthepresentsareinthere Fri 27-Dec-13 18:45:39

I'm up for Monday weigh in as it might make me behave over the weekend, and Monday night isn't a good cheat night. I'm 5'7 and weigh 17 stone (238lbs). So need to lose 84lbs total. Going to look up MVP now

That's the main reason I do Mondays - less time to 'get away' with cheating at the weekend!

DuchessFanny Fri 27-Dec-13 19:11:43

I happily joined another weight loss thread ... Then promptly ignored it as I just wasn't ready. I have now however had my DH ( who has seen me smaller and also 2 sizes bigger than I am now and never once said a word ) say he's worried about our health now we're no longer in our 20s !
He wants me around for a long, long time .
I also feel tired, bloated, my jeans ( size 16 ) are too tight and for a woman of 5 foot I look like one giant ball with weight on me.
Christmas do was miserable, I was the biggest one there by far
A friend posted a pic of me on fb, I look fat and old ...
So ! What are we all trying ? Mfp ? Sw ? Ww ? ( should say now I've tried them ALL !)

DuchessFanny Fri 27-Dec-13 19:12:50

Oh and I don't own scales .. Can I do measurements ?

HepsibarCrinkletoes Fri 27-Dec-13 19:19:55

I don't own scales either Duchess. Was thinking of making myself use the one in Boots.

Method wise, I'm planning on 5:2. I did it before and it was great, but I stopped when hideous real life shit got in the way.

I've just throw out all the treats, feels good! DH has suggested a filthy KFC, but I have resisted!

Jeni- to add people, click on email option and then you can enter a username instead of an email address

Also just downloaded Andrew Johnson hypnotherapy app on my phone- the "get fit" and "lose weight", can't hurt right?wink

justonemorecake Fri 27-Dec-13 19:29:54

I should probably throw all the treats out but I'm not sure I can force myself to. I did give away a whole box of Ferraro Roche the other day.

darwiniandreams Fri 27-Dec-13 19:31:55

Count me in too! I'm 5st-ish overweight.

I'll be using a free local initiative run by the Nhs. So sw it is. Start date is 8th of Jan but will cut down before. After reading this I have also signed up to mfp.

I am mortified to say I am squeezing into my jeans and feel awful.

darwiniandreams Fri 27-Dec-13 19:35:12

My name on mfp is baxter1179 if anyone wants to add me. I've not figured out how to use it properly yet.

Justonemore, that's great will power. I probably should have added that I ate much of said treats before throwing the rest away...blush

89 calories over today. It's the bloody wine that does it, I need to stop!

Also noticed that we cannot see each other's food diaries unless you change your privacy settings.

Just made mine visible to friends smile

nf1morethanjustlumpsandbumps Fri 27-Dec-13 19:46:12

I'm in too disgusted with how I've let myself go so I've around 4 stone to go here to I'm a classic binge/comfort eater and I'm slowly killing myself. Don't want DS to have such a bad relationship with food.

Id like to join too please. Im 5 foot 3 and overweight. I dont know how much though as I havent weighed myself in 9 years. Im 2 sizes bigger than I was before I had Dd2 ( 9 years ago). I hate how I look too. Im also giving up smoking next week. Ive never really dieted before so really have no clue how and Im rather intimidated by the whole thing. I have RA and find exercise very painful so not sure how much I can do of that. ( one of the reasons I got so much bigger I think )There are NO pools anywhere near by I can use either.

darwiniandreams Fri 27-Dec-13 21:16:52

It's a double edge sword isn't it? I feel a lot of my pain now is due to my weight. I'm hoping I can learn to manage it better by losing weight to see if that helps. smile

Issyw Fri 27-Dec-13 21:19:21

I'm in too - got to lose 3 stone by June for a family wedding and little boy will be 8 months then. Will be nice to have others to diet with. Planning on motivating myself to go on daily walks with little one and start back at Zumba once a week initially on top of healthy eating.

Am hoping a sober January will help get the weight loss started.

HepsibarCrinkletoes Fri 27-Dec-13 22:42:24

Well I've been pondering my plan since first post earlier and think I'm going to go for my weigh in on a Friday. I will be doing the 5:2 for sure, which I will start next Wednesday (New Year and all that).

I intend to fast on Wednesday and Saturday each week, as those days work best for me being my busy, don't sit down/have time sort of days.

My plan on those days is for a late morning early lunch of a couple of poached eggs or a simple cucumber and prawn salad or similar; with a big bowl of homemade minestrone soup for supper. Proper minestrone, none of the pasta gubbins. DD3 also loves it, so that works well. She also has a big lunch at school and a packed lunch at her drama class on Saturday.

I have some amazingly tasty proper green tea that a friend bought in Shanghai, so will sup that through the fast days. I'm very partial to elderflower, so I'm going to see if I can get away with a couple of those with sparkling water within my 500 cals too.

TotallyAddictedToLurking Fri 27-Dec-13 23:15:50

I have used MFP before and really liked the social aspect of it. I'm just wondering if it's worth doing that again and still going to the ww meetings to keep me motivated.

JingleHumps Fri 27-Dec-13 23:23:41

Jumping in also. Though have more to lose than that. Not doing anything til Jan though! So let's call it 100 in 50 for me!

Have two toddlers so I can't see me sticking to an actual plan, but I could stop eating all the chocolate I pretend I've bought for them. And I've been meaning to start running again once they're in bed. I used to tolerate love running.

ForeverForever Fri 27-Dec-13 23:52:20

Another one here hoping the social aspect will keep me on track...

Have just stopped BFing in time for Christmas and getting a bit of a taste for alcohol again, so need to have a plan in place to not make that another bad habit along with the cake it's ok it's for the baby habit.

I'm about 12st at 5'4 with a disgusting tummy. Hope to do 5:2 and a bit of running/swimming when I can get the time.

1lb is a great target, looking forward to shopping in the sales next year and not feeling miserable grin

I'm in. I was size 12 for my 20's & 30's and am nearing the end of my 40's a size 18/20... Will read the whole thread and get mfp sorted.

jchocchip Sat 28-Dec-13 00:43:25

Me, I'm in. Need to do more running and weights and watch what I eat. Mfp worked when I used it... user name same as on here, feel free to nag me!

HoLilyChristmas311 Sat 28-Dec-13 05:16:27

How do I add people on mfp? I am Lily311

outtolunchagain Sat 28-Dec-13 06:13:24

I,m in I am mrswoodentop on mfp.

We are away staying with relatives abroad until next week when I will start in ernest, no point before then I think !

BadSeedsAddict Sat 28-Dec-13 06:25:23

I'm in! Current weight 13st 10. I need to stick to Paleo (which I love and makes me feel great) and keep running with a bit of other exercise thrown in.

Youarejustwordsonascreenpeople Sat 28-Dec-13 06:56:52

I managed 5 minutes on the eliptical trainer this morning. I have it on virtually no resistance so not too difficult but it was enough for me. I am hoping that I can build it up slowly.

My big downfall is coke. I drink about 2ltr a day.

MrsClauswearsspanx Sat 28-Dec-13 07:17:01

I'm in. I never stick to anything but am also about 4 stone overweight and hate the way everything looks on me, too. Will get the app asap.

TheDietStartsTomorrow Sat 28-Dec-13 07:39:39

So are we all going with seperate weigh in days or sticking with one? I vote Mondays btw; it helps me push myslef on the weekend to work out a little more.

Good to see so many of us determined to do something about our weight. Woohoo... this is going to be fun. We need some sort or order and structure to the thread though. Are we posting as and when or daily? Weekly?

I realised one of the reason I put weight on again after I lost it was because I tried to do too much too soon. I aimed for 2-3lbs a week which meant copious amount of exercise and dedicating a lot of time to planning my 'diet'. So a pound a week sounds like a more realistic and sustainable approach.

I'm going to give myself one small target each week to focus on. A little change each week might help me develop some long lasting good habits.

This week I'm going to focus on not eating anything after supper except a cup of coffee. If I can manage that for a week I'll be off to a good start.

justonemorecake Sat 28-Dec-13 07:59:22

After someone recommending it, I got my husband to take a full length photo of me in just my underwear, so that I can see the progress I have made. It was not a good sight! When I get changed I normally avoid looking in the mirror, so I didn't realise how bad it had got! At least it was the shock I needed to make sure I definitely go ahead with this!

People talking about doing the 5:2 diet, how exactly does it work? I have a rough idea that you eat normally 5 days a week and fast 2 days?

CecyHall Sat 28-Dec-13 08:03:23

Is anyone good at spreadsheets? I know on the low carb bootcamps they have a google doc spreadsheet that people add their loss to. I was thinking if it was just simple week 1, week 2 etc along the columns and usernames in the row we could add our lb weight loss each week with maybe a total sum at the end of the row and then it wouldn't matter so much whether we all weighed in/started on same day.

I'm not very good at spreadsheets though and I mainly internet on my phone otherwise I'd do it myself!

If we are going to have a unified weigh in day, I would also vote for Mondays as well as it keeps me focused over the weekend :-) but it may not work for everyone, could we do a spreadsheet somehow to keep a track? If someone can tell me how to do one that I can store somewhere where everyone can see it I am happy to maintain it each week. Can't promise everyday, but will manage twice a week for the Monday weighers and the Friday weighers maybe?

justonemorecake Sat 28-Dec-13 08:07:54

Yes I normally aim for 2-3lb weight loss a week and then lose motivation when I don't maintain it.

I'm not sure how we should structure the thread? If most people use mfp, that will have some structure so maybe the thread can be for posting as an when, when we need a bit of motivation or a chat? But I'm happy whatever people decide!

Cross post! Yes CecyHall, I use spreadsheets every day - didn't know about Google docs though. Will investigate later and see if I can work something out!

Agree that MFP would be easier though as everyone can update their own and it's more like a social network thing.

justonemorecake Sat 28-Dec-13 08:15:04

If we are doing a spreadsheet could we maybe have a seperate stats thread where people update every Monday? Then it will be easier for whoever is maintaining the spreadsheet to find everyone's details?

Or as long as people bold anything they want updated onto the spreadsheet, it will be easy to pick out scrolling through the thread.

ellietrying Sat 28-Dec-13 09:50:53

I'm in smile not sure how yet but will work it out before 1st! I've done SW more times than I care to admit so could probably follow that without attending group. I love the idea of going to SW groups but have never felt truly comfortable and like a complete outsider so don't think I will go! I'm 25, 5ft 5 and just over 14 and a half stone sad

ricericebaby Sat 28-Dec-13 10:17:57

I'm trixieanne1981 on My Fitness Pal if anyone wants to add me. Been on and off this wagon way more than I can count so having people be able to check on me should keep me on the straight and narrow!

PuggyMum Sat 28-Dec-13 11:05:53

Morning! I'm just getting me and baby organised for a walk with some friends and our dogs. It will be a leisurely stroll but should be a good hour and blow away some of the cobwebs.

My other challenge or January is to go through my entire wardrobe and get rid of all the clothes I'll never wear again. Even if they fit me, there's stuff a 35 year old mother should not be wearing!

I'll probably be over my calories (I've allowed 1500 as am breastfeeding) most of the time to start with. According to a calculator I've just done I'm allowed 2222 per day to maintain so it'll be trial and error as 1lb a week is what I'm aiming for. I don't want to affect milk / mood / energy as apart from my weight I'm very happy at the moment!

BahrainB Sat 28-Dec-13 11:14:50

Please count me in.
I am dreading the scales but will love it if they read 52lbs lighter by the year end.

DaftSkunk Sat 28-Dec-13 11:15:52

Can I join please? I'm aiming to lose 2 stone by cutting out crap and eating more healthily.

HugAndRoll Sat 28-Dec-13 11:57:25

I'm in too. I don't know what to do though.

That's a lie really. I know exactly how to lose weight, I just need to focus. I'm going abroad in July and I'd love to have lost a dress size by then. I also turn 29 in August and don't want to be overweight in my 30s. If I do it now I can be sensible.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea Sat 28-Dec-13 12:01:36

sidles onto thread
Hello, my name is Somewhere and I am a heifer. blush

I lost a couple of stone last year doing 5:2, but have put some back on in the past couple of months (haven't weighed myself yet so not sure how much).
Need to lose at least another couple of stone, plus whatever I've put back on (around half a stone I think, judging by how my clothes fit).

My downfalls are wine, evening snacks, and hating exercise.

My main strategy is going to be a bit of a mishmash, at least to start with - get myself back into the mentality. I might then go back onto something more formal, probably 5:2, once my head has acclimatised again grin

- no breakfast (I find it really helps to skip breakfast, my body is never actually hungry anyway, it's just a habit I get into which always piles on the unnecessary pounds - obviously this doesn't work for everyone, I know some people really need their brekkie);
- Running at least 2 or 3 times a week (can do a 5k distance reasonably alright (ie. without actually dying), would like to build up to 10k by this summer), plus a couple of decent walks and/or swims each week;
- swapping wine for vodka and diet tonic, and cutting back on the booze in general;
- cutting out the carbs. This is a biggie for me - makes such a difference if I'm not eating pasta 1-2 times a week.

Have just reactivated my MFP account and updated my goals.
Will be going for it properly after the New Year but until then am going to at least start cutting back a bit and getting some exercise. Haven't been for a run for weeks - am going to go out for a bit of a puff around this afternoon shock

HugAndRoll Sat 28-Dec-13 12:03:41

I'm hugandroll on mfp. Can you set it up to do 5:2?

DuchessFanny Sat 28-Dec-13 12:06:03

Trying to add friends on mfp but it says I need email addresses ?
I'm rolph75 though if you want to add me ..

SomewhereBeyondTheSea Sat 28-Dec-13 12:10:38

PS. Forgot to mention, the 'official' 5:2 book 'The Fast Diet' by Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer is very good.
I am also going to probably start trying 'The Beck Diet' which despite the title is not actually an eating plan per se. It is basically CBT for over-eating - it's about developing better mental attitudes towards food. I've had a read of it before but chickened out of actually giving it a go. Anyone who finds that they comfort-eat or have other emotional eating issues might find it's helpful - ?

SomewhereBeyondTheSea Sat 28-Dec-13 12:11:57

Hugandroll - yes, I used MFP to do 5:2 last year. You just need to work out your weekly calorie total, divide that by 7, set that as your daily target, and then focus on your weekly average figure rather than the daily figures, iyswim.

TotallyAddictedToLurking Sat 28-Dec-13 12:14:55

Somewhere thank you for that. I am a huge emotional eater. I will give that book a go too.

It can't hurt right...

SomewhereBeyondTheSea Sat 28-Dec-13 12:20:43

Tbh I've been worried that it will actually be quite hard to get to the bottom of my emotional triggers for over-eating, hence having chickened out of actually doing the book so far! But I'm thinking, 'if not now, when?'. It's got to be done sometime, and a new year is a good psychological moment to make a start, I think.
Good luck with it, if you do get it and have a read, let me know what you think smile

DuchessFanny Sat 28-Dec-13 12:34:09

Somewherebeyondthesea .. Come join us on mfp ? There's a group of us supporting each other on there already, more the merrier !

MotherGirth Sat 28-Dec-13 12:56:00

I'm in. 52lbs is a perfect target for me. It would take me to 8st 8lbs and I'm 5'4". I'll be doing 5:2 and MFP. Don't want to put my full username here as it's guessable, but it begins and ends Mrs...2009 if you have a friend request you don't recognise.

I weighed in this morning with the intention of fasting this Monday and Thursday. Other than that I'll be carrying on with the Christmas troughing until the Friday when I'll do MFP too.

I went spinning and had a long, hilly walk yesterday. I intend to spin twice a week, do C25K twice and try to fit in yoga and kettlebells too (I really love exercise and have loads of DVDs. I just haven't been finding the time.

Right, now to add people on MFP. Think will find it hard to find you all on here. Is it worth a list that we can C&P to add to?

DuchessFanny Sat 28-Dec-13 13:04:16

I've just put my new weight into mfp ( from when I last had scales at least a month ago !) and am dismayed to realise I've put quite a bit on since my last weigh in on there ...
Will buy good new scales before the start date ...which is when ? And measure myself too ...

shutitthepresentsareinthere Sat 28-Dec-13 13:05:28

Think I've just added everyone on mfp

Somewhere- I am also addicted to eating. I find it difficult to stop eating when I am full and I will always reach for food when I am in need of comfort.

I grew up watching my own mother have an awful relationship with food, and I don't want DS witnessing the same with me. My DM used to swing from eating disorder to eating disorder- whilst piling on the weight in between. Actually thinking about it, I remember DM calling me a "fat cow" during my teenage years- despite being 5ft 11ins and a size 12 sad

MotherGirth Sat 28-Dec-13 13:25:42

By the way, I'm WI on Saturdays. I have lost weight at this kind of rate before and enjoyed having completely diet-free guilt-free Saturdays because it kept me motivated the rest of the time. A Sat WI means the damage will have been reversed a week later.

octopusinasantasack Sat 28-Dec-13 13:34:28

I don't know how to go about it either, I've done WW before and that worked well but I can't go to classes at the moment so I need to do it myself. I think I'll just have to be sensible and track my food on MFP and find some exercise to do at home using the Wii,

Even these last two days, MFP has helped as I know I have to write it all down. So if I think about having some crisps etc, the fact I will have to log it, alone, is making me think again.

Long may it last!

JingleHumps Sat 28-Dec-13 13:46:50

ricericebaby Sat 28-Dec-13 13:47:02

I was due to start on Jan 1st but I've decided to start today. No point putting it off any longer or I'll lose motivation. Took all the excess Christmas stuff to the food bank, went and bought myself some trainers and sports bras to go with my years gym membership and I'm now timetabling myself gym time and classes in my diary. If I see it written down I will go.

The hardest part for me is always mid afternoon so thinking of some things I could do to take my mind off food hmm

Nap grin

Id start properly now too.but am home alone with dd on NYE and have a bottle of.Prosecco.and a Camembert earmarked. Will eat sensibly that day aside from that though.

GimmeDaBoobehz Sat 28-Dec-13 13:58:10

I could do with losing 30lbs which is about 2 and a bit stone, I think.

I am hoping to lose half a pound a week so I think that will add up to 26lbs lost in a year, which sounds like a good goal to me.

I hope I can keep up with it. If I do more than that a week, it's a bonus. I think if I lost 52lb I'd be nearly underweight (11st 3 atm and just over 5ft).

I started today too. No point in putting it off. We have a late Christmas celebration planned with the in-laws on Monday but I can eat sensibly, drink sensibly and resist pudding (fingers crossed)

And I have a party to attend on the 3rd. Will need to be strong and resist, resist, resist...

ricericebaby Sat 28-Dec-13 14:03:42

grin nap sounds good!

Behind Eat before you go if possible. Will hopefully stop you nibbling mindlessly.

That's a good idea.

The party starts at 6.30. So will fill up on soup or something similarly healthy and filling. My plan is to volunteer to be designated driver so I am forced to pass on the alcohol. I will bring with me a huge bottle of fizzy water and a lemon, will drink that all night.

Must. Stay. Strong!

Me please! I moved to Texas last summer and have gained a stone hmm. I'm on holiday at a hotel til 2nd January, then I'll be on mfp for the rest of the year, also cutting out sugar. My username is exitthruthegiftshop, feel free to add me!

Oh and dh bought me new scales for Xmas. I did ask for them but he thought it would be better if they were officially from the kids to both of us ( he's going to be on mfp too). It's the aria wifi scales, think they link to mfp automatically, anyone else tried these?

butterflies have added you. Have escaped from the general melee downstairs to "put the baby to sleep" grin. Surprise is, she's actually nodded off! So I might manage 15min uninterrupted MN'ing before anyone noticed I should be painting nails (DD and DNeice) or building Lego (DS and BIL!)

Wifi scales sound very Big Brother!

MotherGirth Sat 28-Dec-13 14:37:22

Very impressed with those starting now. There's no way I could.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea Sat 28-Dec-13 14:53:23

Duchess, would love to - how do I find you all? (Don't want to post my username on here)

Have been for a run slow and sporadic puff around the neighbourhood, so that's a start. And I weighed myself - 13 stone 1. I got down to 12'8 in the autumn, so yes, around half a stone has gone back on - that's not too bad.
Aiming for 11 stone (top of my 'healthy' range).

If you look for one of the usernames up thread and add them, you should then be able to see who they've become friends with in the last few days - and add them as well you can send a message when you add people so you can give your MN name in that.

If you can't see where to add by user name, it's the same bit where you add by email - just put the user name in the 'email' box and it will work.

ForeverForever Sat 28-Dec-13 15:27:52

I'm registered on MFP but never used it!

What can 'friends' see?

I'm going to take this seriously so will try to add you all on it if that's ok?

ForeverForever Sat 28-Dec-13 15:32:21

Ignore my question - I've just read the FAQs on MFP. Answer is not a lot, by default.

It's a bit like Facebook. You can hide whatever you want, but you can post status updates, post exercise, weight loss etc - it's just more geared to healthy living and weight loss that Facebook.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea Sat 28-Dec-13 15:35:46

Thanks Woodburner - think I have sent a friend request to Duchess. If she approves me I should appear on her list with a name including the word 'somewhere' grin

When she's added you, you'll see mine on her friends list - end _girl

All my friends are people from this thread so that should help you!

ForeverForever Sat 28-Dec-13 15:39:14

Thanks wood burner, have started working my way through the thread.

I want to do this, but there's not much point in me joining till the start of May (baby's due end of April and then the weight loss hopefully begins!) so I'll hopefully be looking at dropping maybe 40lbs over the year if it's 1lb/week.

Starting several different aqua classes in the next couple of weeks to get me geared up as well as swimming as many times a week as possible, and then after the baby I'll be doing the higher-impact aqua classes. Also looking at starting Boxfit and yoga fusion after April too smile I have full gym membership but have to time it around uni!

With regards to eating I struggle with food, I love fruit but probably eat way too much of it, and I'm a white carb fiend. Not so much a chocolate/cake/pudding person, but I love pasta, rice, white bread etc so trying to change to brown/wholemeal will be the biggest difficulty for me. I've got gallbladder issues so I could do with cutting down on the amount of fatty foods I eat, and gluten triggers the issues with my adhesions (had major surgery as a baby) so this can only be a good thing!

Just posting now to mark my place so I can keep track of this and later threads, ready to start in early May smile

DuchessFanny Sat 28-Dec-13 15:53:34

I'm rolph75 and you'll find new friends I've added within the last day - it's great, already feel pretty motivated and excited about it !

Will be back but my mfp is Gumble78

After two dc and a desk job I'm at least 3 stone over a healthy weight. We need to cut costs this year (I'm not earning enough to cover childcare and DH redundant from March) and so portion control will be a key part of my diet.

If I can loose half the weight by July all the better! I love low carbing but impossible when breastfeeding as it affects my milk supply.

SoThisisMe Sat 28-Dec-13 16:48:05

Jumping in too if I may. Need to lose 5st. Tried so many times but always give up. Hoping support on here will make a difference!

Will prob do SW but not actually going to group, I know the plan well enough and need to save money where ever I can. Might join mfp also.

Aiming to start on the 4th or 5th as have family visiting until then.

roosterroo Sat 28-Dec-13 16:56:28

Can I join too? I have weighed myself at a horrific 12st 6lb i am busy reading all the 5:2 stuff. I would like to lose around 2 stone.
Just been back to myfp name is brereton2 if anyone wants to add me.
Hoping for the motivation to keep going ds1 is 14!
Has anyone started couch 2 5 k?

didireallysaythat Sat 28-Dec-13 17:26:05

Right - I've dug outout my mfp account and I'm charging the iPad for c25k. Are we weighing friday or Monday ?

justonemorecake Sat 28-Dec-13 17:41:10

roosterroo I started couch to 5k but then injured my knees and never really got going again.

I found it pretty good though. I was pretty unfit but managed the runs quite well. Some would probably find the first week too easy. The podcasts are helpful. I think I'm going to start it again in the New Year and hope I get further with it this time!

TalkinPeace Sat 28-Dec-13 17:54:23

Combining 5:2 and MyFitnessPal
set your weight to maintain
ie no weight loss at all
I know that feels scary
what MFP will then show is your required calories for a normal day.

Two days a week ( on 5:2 ) you will restrict to 500 calories - best to join the 5:2 threads / board for support on how

and THAT will give you the weekly deficit you need to achieve what you want.

5:2 books etc
the Michael Mosely one is the original - but you'll find quotes from we MN posters in it because our threads were going before he did the book or his excellent and incredibly supportive website

looking forward to seeing you all looking fab this tine next year

I know we arent technically starting til 1st Jan but im.weighing in Mon to get my start point, if any of the Friday weighers want to do the same Fri?

justonemorecake Sat 28-Dec-13 18:15:22

I think I'll weigh in this Monday as well. I'm really fighting the urge to snack at the moment. Sat watching Marple and biscuits and Christmas cake are staring at me!

roosterroo Sat 28-Dec-13 18:24:48

Hmm im dubious with the running after injuring my back this year ( embarrassing bringing in washing!) I may have to unleash Jillian from the cupboard!

didireallysaythat Sat 28-Dec-13 18:28:33

I'm going to start on Friday as I'm away until then and I can't diet in someone else's house.

However I'm going to try and reduce my 20 a day quality street habit.

This time I'm taking measurements as the scales number isn't as important to me as clothes that fit. And a smaller muffin top is what I need !

Talkinpeace thanks for that, was wondering how I got it to work - I've sent mine to lose 1lb per week but was going to fast 2 days - that would be too much I guess?

KenAdams I am going to weigh Monday to get my start point as well.

And you have the same name as my ex boss, I'm sure you don't look like him though!

Haha no I dont thankfully, being female! Its a "Friends" reference grin

He was quite fit, if that's any consolation!

TalkinPeace Sat 28-Dec-13 18:58:55

If you set to lose no weight at all on MFP - so eat your TDEE averaged over the 5 'normal' days' , and do your two days of fasts really well
and do not add back any exercise calories
52 lb in 52 weeks is utterly achievable
go for it ladies.

Im.another one not adding in any exercize. Figured id class any extra calories burned as a bonus.

I am concerned that if I do well.one week and lose two lbs or more, that it will make me think I can 'relax' the followong week.

TalkinPeace Sat 28-Dec-13 19:12:13

if you do an extra pound in a week, put it toward a monthly total, or quarterly total
so make it 52 in 51 or 52 in 40 etc
that will help you keep focussed
as will learning how to eat mindfully

MotherGirth Sat 28-Dec-13 19:39:45

So shall we do a little summary of who's in, start weight (if you're willing) and method? I'm happy to start off. Feel free to C&P to extend the list.

MotherGirth: start weight 12st 4lbs; current weight 12st 4lbs; target weight 8st 8lbs (52lbs). 5:2 and MFP. Spinning and C25k.

Good idea.

Also, when I was getting ready for work I did the ghastly front and side photos! Be good to have them to look at if I ever get tempted to fall off the wagon, and will force myself to do it weekly. Have had to hide them in a folder on my phone grin

Am on phone so cant cut and paste.

MyNameIsKenAdams gemmbopastie on MFP start weight 13st1, Current weight 12st13, target weight 9st3 (52lb off start weight), MFP, general healthy eating & Zumba class.

I can't cut and paste either - but am happy to put together a google docs spreadsheet if anyone wants? Will have to wait until baby nap time, or lunch break at work.

WoodBurnerBabe start weight 14st2lbs, current weight 14st2lbs, target weight 10st6lbs (which is 52lbs), using 5:2 and shit loads of exercise...

stoopstofolly Sat 28-Dec-13 19:59:03

How do I join in? I've 3 stone to lose and am desperately depressed about it. I'm embarrassed about how I've key myself go so am keeping quiet about the diet- it would be great to share. What's MFP?

justonemorecake Sat 28-Dec-13 20:00:53

I'll attempt to copy and paste those so far:

MotherGirth: start weight 12st 4lbs; current weight 12st 4lbs; target weight 8st 8lbs (52lbs). 5:2 and MFP. Spinning and C25k.

MyNameIsKenAdams gemmbopastie on MFP start weight 13st1, Current weight 12st13, target weight 9st3 (52lb off start weight), MFP, general healthy eating & Zumba class.

WoodBurnerBabe start weight 14st2lbs, current weight 14st2lbs, target weight 10st6lbs (which is 52lbs), using 5:2 and shit loads of exercise...

Justonemorecake: start weight 16st6lbs, current weight 16st6lbs, target weight 10st7lbs, using mfp, 7 minute workout and couch to 5k

MFP is myfitnesspal - if you have an iPhone there is an app, otherwise you can use the website.

And you've joined just by posting! Welcome and good luck with the weightloss :-)

Have a read of the thread and see what tictacs other people are using for their weight loss strategy. 1lb a week seems really achievable from the posts above, hopefully this is our year :-)

darwiniandreams Sat 28-Dec-13 20:04:47

darwiniandreams start weight 15st 4, current weight 15st 4, target weight 10st - 10st 7 but will be happy for now to get to 11st 7 after losing the 52lbs.

My main weaknesses atm are portion sizes (too late at night) v. little exercise and too much fizzy drinks.

I will use mfp sw and keep checking back with mn to give me a swift kick up the arse when needed. blush

PuggyMum Sat 28-Dec-13 20:05:50

Well crisis kind of averted. Got my friends 13 yo dd staying and I suggested a dominos! But she said she fancied egg chips and beans! Which isn't ideal but without the ketchup and bread with an inch of butter it could have been worse.

I've got fil coming tomorrow and he's a hearty food kind of guy. I'm planning menus for the week but New Year's Day will be our family Xmas lunch. By next Sunday the house will be free from Xmas goodies!

darwiniandreams Sat 28-Dec-13 20:06:12

My weigh in will be Wednesday at sw

CecyHall Sat 28-Dec-13 20:14:10

I think I've added all I can see on MFP but I'm Cecyhall on there if I've missed you!

ricericebaby Sat 28-Dec-13 20:15:24

Will weigh in on Monday to get my proper starting weight. Can only weigh in at Boots as I don't have scales and will weigh every Monday from then. I know I was 13st 9lbs 2 weeks ago so I'm hoping for lower than that on Monday.... Seriously doubting it though with the Christmas scoffing!

I'll add my start weight just as soon as I've found the scales.

stoopstofolly Sat 28-Dec-13 20:22:47

Thank you wood burner. grin This will be the year I LOSE weight, not accept another 7lb annual gain! DP and family all a bit scornful about diets, so it will be nice to have people to strive with!

HepsibarCrinkletoes Sat 28-Dec-13 20:25:51

HepsibarCrinkletoes: start/current weight 11st9lbs (but will need to check as that was a fortnight ago), target weight 9st4lbs (33kbs rather than my original 26). Using 5:2, plus C25K.

I don't have a MFP acc yet, but will open it and then work out HTF to add you all!

Awww crumbs, do I need to give my start weight?
Ok, it is 19stone1.
My target weight is 16stone (that is a loss of just under 52lbs)
I am 6ft1, I look ok at 16 stone.

Let's do this!

Oh, and I will be playing badminton once a week and walking the dog daily (instead of asking dh to walk him)
And MFP calorie counting

HepsibarCrinkletoes Sat 28-Dec-13 20:36:19

If there is anyone on this thread in SW London that fancies a jollying along RL partner, then I'm up for it. grin

encyclogirl Sat 28-Dec-13 20:36:27

Can I join? I think I have 30 to lose. <scared of the scales so can't say for sure>. I will screw my courage to the sticking place on Monday and weigh myself. eek!

Skogkatter Sat 28-Dec-13 20:46:15

Can I join! I need to lose about 30lbs or so blush but I think I am a very slow weight dropper. Do we have to post weight?

I'm going to do more running after work and I've decided to put the car keys away- so I can walk to the bus stop (for work) or walk more in general. Plus calorie counting. And not eating as many biscuits (I'm a sucker for custard creams).... I hope it works!

stoopstofolly Sat 28-Dec-13 20:48:11

I've joined MFP. User name stoopstofolly......

Morebiscuitsplease Sat 28-Dec-13 20:49:55

HAving gone over my weight limit......scales weren't working I am determined to lose weight. Going for 5:2, carry on with Zumba, May try a running class and alcohol free month from 6th jan as it is my birthday. Want to. lose about 11/2- 2 stone. Hoping alcohol free month will kick start things. Want to lose my fat tum and be fitter and leaner. So glad to see other people having a try. smile)

I honestly don't think it matters when we weigh in, as long as we post it. I doubt the thread(s) will move so fast that anyone's weekly WI will go unnoticed. This speaks the failed veteran of countless weight loss attempts. This time will be different.

MotherGirth Sat 28-Dec-13 20:55:28

loopybear Sat 28-Dec-13 21:12:30

I'm in. 52 lbs is a great target for me and getting fitter. I've done ww and slimming before and successfully lost but always put back on. I need to do something long term and get back into power walking. Will start on 4th as my birthday on 3rd and have big dinner organises. I'm 5'10" 16 is getting too snug now. Weigh 14 stone something. Will weigh in on Monday 6th January. Will measure to and like the idea of selfie in mirror. Will go and download app too

Ohhelpohnoitsa Sat 28-Dec-13 21:32:47

I am with you. Monday am weigh in, need to lose 6 stone to be "normal" . I'd be happy to lose 4 stone. Sound so easy when you say 52lb in 52 weeks. I shall start Jan 2nd and in January I will ditch caffeine, bread & chocolate. I will also make smart choices - oven cook not fry, boiled rice not fried, cottage cheese not cheddar. In january I will also up my veg intake. In February I hope to continue these and add more constraints. Its easier to stick to if you do it for a month. Look forward to this. I wonder how many of us will still be posting at Christmas next year.........

stoopstofolly Sat 28-Dec-13 21:34:06

I have to give current weight. This is making me feel a bit sick.... Here goes.
Current 12stone 8
Goal- 9 stone
Looking at it written down is frightening.

stoops is is scary. I weigh over 14st. More than I've ever weighed in my life, but you have to know where you start...

Good luck.

TalkinPeace Sat 28-Dec-13 21:42:18

Please remember the tricks to make weight loss sustainable
- nothing is forbidden
- only make one change in any week
- you cannot 'fall off the wagon' - you just 'rest' for a week
- there is no return to 'normal' ever, for the rest of your life
- weight is not everything, its possible to shrink by inches without the scales budging
- the fitter you are, the slimmer you will look compared with others of the same 'weight'
- before you eat anything, drink a glass of water, as you are more likely to the thirsty than hungry
- close the kitchen between and after meals ... snacks are not for your benefit

FearTheEscalator Sat 28-Dec-13 21:59:54

Can I join in too, please? I am 13st 5lbs and desperate to lose 4st before I turn 40 next December. My MFP name is Sigma39. Any ideas for exercise that I can easily fit around full time job and two small DCs? I don't have any gyms nearby

Fear what about the 30 Day Shred workout dvd? Have heard it is marvellous and I have it in the wrappings ready for the NY.

TalkinPeace Sat 28-Dec-13 22:06:37

Jillian Michaels has lots of her stuff on Youtube
Couch to 5k (c25k) is rated by many
do you have a wii?
the wii fit stuff is really cheap now and a great start and the kids can do it with you
just dance for xbox kinect
anything to get you jumping around for half an hour a day, every day and get the kids into being active with you

Chants73 Sat 28-Dec-13 22:13:01

I'm going to weigh on the day I start which will be 2nd jan. I'm in denial till then. Going to redo c25k, but slowly, as hurt knees last time and 5:2. Am going to spend next couple of days hunting down recipes and planning, so that when I start it is as painless as possible. Prob wont fast till 6th jan as I need to to it on busy childfree days, but intend to properly meal plan on in between days and try Paul mckenna too/being more aware of what I eat/how I feel etc.....think I'll get a notebook to write down what I eat to increase awareness

Can I make a couple of suggestions?

First for those using smartphones there is an excellent free app called Hydro which prompts you to drink more water - as we all know that is key to staying healthy and removing toxins. It's completely configurable with different goals, different glass sizes and different reminders.

And secondly can I suggest someone with a handy calendar (not me as I type with one finger while breastfeeding baby dd2) lists a breakdown of how many pounds per month? So by the end of January 5lb, by the end of February 9lb etc etc so people can see how it's a longer term goal but with milestones? Could aim for nlb by Easter Sunday etc etc

Anyway I am Gumble78 on MFP so waving hello to those who've added me and will be back with the full weight damage in the morning.

FearTheEscalator Sat 28-Dec-13 22:30:10

Thanks for the suggestions - I have heard wonders about The Shred and I'd love a wii if I can get one cheap enough

muchostinky Sat 28-Dec-13 22:31:38

I am most definitely in!!
My name is pollylyn on MFP (I have already added a few of you). I really need to get my arse in gear this year and lose a lot of weight, probably more than 52lbs to be truthful but anything will be better than how I am just now.
I am going to be doing Slimming World starting on 7th January, but I will start cutting down and watching what I am eating on MFP.
I really want to get pregnant this year, but I know that I can still do slimming world if I do manage it - so no excuses.
I am a bit ashamed to admit how heavy I am and to tell the truth 2230 at night probably isn't the best time to weigh in, so I will in the morning and update for the stats. I think I will go and take some before photos too, to give me some motivation.

Ive had a quick wozz through the calendar and the Bank Holidays look like good days to track:

Easter Mon - 16lbs
May BH - 21lbs
August BH - 34lbs
Christmas Week - 51lbs

MerylStrop Sat 28-Dec-13 22:38:43

I don't want to add my weight, though it is no more or less than anyone else's on here. I want to lose pretty much 52lbs! I will post plusses and minusses.....

Did a half hour hot yoga today, just a quick but quite challenging one, and cycled there and back. Have not addressed my Xmas portion control attitude yet, and just had a glass of wine.

Going to do the month of booze abstinence thing from the 1st (easy, really only drink at my book group and a bit of prosecco at Xmas), cut out all sugar and sweeteners and white carbs, and 5:2. Might do a fast on Monday so it doesn't all hinge on New Year-ness.

BrokenButNotFinished Sat 28-Dec-13 23:19:36

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I'm in. I have weighing scales and batteries - but not necessarily in conjunction. I find it very easy to put weight on - and have done so more than usual this year when a few injuries have prevented me doing my usual exercise. No idea how much I need to lose, but it's got to be at least three stones. I feel I'm looking down a fat tunnel with type 2 diabetes at the end of it...

On phone, so can't cut and paste.

Thank you for those who added me on mfp. Not sure who said but really like the Idea of changing one habits a week. No snacking in the evening will be mine. I'm a lone parent and evenings are long.

Going out for lunch today at Frankie & Benny's. I have been vair good and chosen my meal in advance in MFP. Should hopefully allow me to maintain some semblance of self control...

Just realise that my usual choice is probably, at 1140 calories, the most calorific thing on the whole menu...

And am avoiding the cinema popcorn trap by delegating child supervision to DH and BIL. SIL and I are going shopping instead :-)

I thought I weighed at least 14.5 stone when I joined, hope I can still stay? wink

AtticusMcPlatypus Sun 29-Dec-13 09:02:27

I'd love to join in with this too. A few years ago I lost nearly 4 stone with SW but I have lost my way again recently. I'm now nearly up to my previous weight so am desperate to do something about it. I will be starting on the 2nd as have NYE and a wedding to get through before then. I'm going to try MFP - never used it before but like the idea of being able to track everything. I'm kateluliz and my starting weight is 13.4 and I'm 5'3". If I could lose 52lbs that would take me down to 9.8 which would be amazing!

delbee Sun 29-Dec-13 12:28:27

Hi all, I was going to start SW on 2 jan, but feeling crap so started today. I'm logging food on mfp although it might not be right calorie wise. My mfp name is adele_30.
Start weight: 12 st 4 lbs

I will weigh on a Monday too.

I know this is not 52 lbs so hope it is still ok to be here. Good luck everyone smile

I will weigh in Monday mornings.

Good luck all

Hi, I'd also like to join. I am currently at a horrific 14st 8lbs. I'm going to start on 1st January and start actually going to WW meetings on 7th January. I'm at the heaviest I've ever been for a long time and I'd like to lose 3 stone.

In a way I'm glad I'll be back at work. There is a lot more structure to the day and I can plan my meals properly. Organisation is my downfall.

Weighing in the morning but 12st 6ish
Hoping for at least a stone

Trying 5:2 and possibly c25k (if it ever downloads)

On mfp as brereton2

Sorry haven't copied bur can't work it out on the kindle

Applesnotcakes Sun 29-Dec-13 16:17:01

I'm in. Going away for new year so will start when back in routine of work etc which is on 3 Jan.

Starting weight will be 13 stone 11 assuming new year celebrations not too disastrous. Target 11 stone. calorie counting via MFP, lots of walking and C25K when it's spring.

Good luck all, looking forward to lots of mutual motivation, chat and laughs!

For those wanting to do c25k I can strongly recommend an app called Zombies! Run! which is hilarious and teamed with another app called Map my Run allows all sorts of interesting stats to be seen for encouragement

justonemorecake Sun 29-Dec-13 17:08:36

Oh no! I have just weighed myself with a different set of scales and they put me at half a stone heavier! How upsetting sad I'm not sure whether to stick with the old, kinder weight from my mechanical scales, or the new, meaner weight from my electronic scales.

Dh got me a late Christmas present today - a jawbone 'Up' bracelet, which tracks your activity, what you eat and sleep. Hopefully it will help me keep motivated to stay active.

TalkinPeace Sun 29-Dec-13 17:11:46

many years ago a friend was "invited" to depart John Lewis after she went up to the gym department, and collected two 10 kg weights and then went down to bathroomdepartment and started checking the scales against each other!

Go with half way in between
remember that by the end of January you'll be well on your way to the new you.
That bracelet sounds interesting.

justonemorecake Sun 29-Dec-13 17:22:02

Thanks talkinpeace . I guess the starting weight doesn't matter too much, as long as I get to where I want to be in the end.

The bracelet is a bit like a glorified pedometer I think, but you can sync it up with an app on your phone.

MatJas Sun 29-Dec-13 18:17:43

Hi all can I join, previously lost 2 stone on SS after second pregnancy, then developed under active thyroid an have put on 4 stones in as man years, can someone please add me to the list am in iPad an dont know how to copy and paste. Start weight 14 stone 2lbs target weight 10 stone 2lbs 56lbs to lose, starting ww on jan 6th when schools go back, going to walk more, metfit again and just dance for wii. Really struggle with emotional eating, bored eating, tiredness eating. Where r we to update our stats each week? Good luck all xx

taletellingtwins Sun 29-Dec-13 19:03:33

Am i too late to join? Not sure of my weight bit think it's nudging over 12stone(am 5ft 4). My 6yo dtd recently said about a dress that was hung up but i was just about to wear to a party "that's nice but its too skinny. Your big tummy wont fit". Out of the mouths of babes! I would like to be a comfortable size 12 with a healthy bmi. Will weigh tomorrow and set up mfp (is there an app for windows phone does anyone know?).

taletellingtwins Sun 29-Dec-13 19:15:05

Turns out i know how to use both a phone AND mfp! My username is twinmum79 grin

I think most people are weighing either Monday or Friday - I don't think we agreed on a set day for everyone! And never to late - most people don't seem to be starting until 1st jan anyway.

TalkinPeace Sun 29-Dec-13 19:19:05

Am i too late to join?
It is never to late to make the decision to improve your life.

bobblypop Sun 29-Dec-13 19:20:19

oh hello, can I join please! Think I need to loose around 4 stone, but too scared to actually weigh myself! A couple of years ago I lost 4 1/2 stone and was down to a size 10, ran a half marathon and felt great. Then for absolutely no logical reason at all I have spent the last 18 months doing barely any excercise and putting almost all the weight back on. sad I'm now a size 18 again and just hate myself. sad
BUT have realised wallowing in self pity wont solve things and have resolved to change! I have started running again and have just completed my third 3 mile run of the week, which is making me feel much better already grin. Starting diet proper in Jan, but feeling better just knowing I am tackling it at last!
Will be great to have this thread for support. grin

HugAndRoll Sun 29-Dec-13 19:31:31

I'm looking forward to starting with all of this support. My start weight is 12st 6 so 52lbs would be 8st10. I'm 5foot 7.5 so I may stop losing before I get to that as I don't want to look too skinny although would prefer that to my ginormabelly

MummyDuckAndDuckling Sun 29-Dec-13 19:40:10

Can I join in please, I'm in need of a miracle now!!! I'm 5ft7 and currently 5st over what i would like to be. I am starting tomorrow though as if I wait till jan 1st, that's another 3 days where I'll just eat shit!!

SuckItAndSee Sun 29-Dec-13 19:43:08

can i please join?
have put on a stone since I got a bad injury, stopped exercising, and started eating like a beast last July. That's on top of the spare stone I was already carrying hmm. I am crap at "structured" diets, as I'm not very organised, but have previously lost weight through portion control and c25k, so am going to try this again as of tomorrow.

start weight:12st0
target weight 10st0
(height 5'9")

TalkinPeace Sun 29-Dec-13 19:43:22

There are no miracles.
There is just the very hard work of relearning self discipline and searching inside yourself to understand what brain processes need to change for ever so that you need never go on a weight loss diet again.
Eat mindfully

but not putting it off any longer is a good way to start

Misfitless Sun 29-Dec-13 19:45:42

Yes, need to lose more than 4 stones.

I love the title of your thread!

Is it just me, or is anyone else going round the house eating as much chocolate as possible, in order to get rid of it all in time for Jan 1st?

MotherGirth Sun 29-Dec-13 19:51:57

I'm doing my first post-Christmas fast now. Will track 500 cals on MFP tomorrow and have a spin class on NYE, but not worrying about tracking anything else until 2nd Jan (which will be my Thursday fast anyway).

MummyDuckAndDuckling Sun 29-Dec-13 19:52:39

Thank you talkinpeace.

I'm in mfp as MummyDuckmfp if anyone wants to add me.

I have been member of a gym this year but as a single parent I found it hard to arrange someone to watch dd just so I could go for a few hours so i doubt I'll renew this jan as I don't feel I got my money's worth sad But I have until the end of jan to decide.

Off on a big walk tomorrow morning to blow off the cobwebs. Will start slow so dd can walk for a bit then I can bung her in buggy and I can go faster smile

I'm back to work tomorrow and planning to do my first 500cal fast. Am planning no breakfast, some kind of cupasoup for lunch and then a quarter portion of DH's spicy pork with rice.

Fingers crossed! I'm already feeling trimmer than a week ago after 3 days of tracking and being more mindful.

Going to weigh in tomorrow to get my start weight for my bet with DH. £52 to the first person to lose 52lbs...

PuggyMum Sun 29-Dec-13 20:06:26

Today is a fail. Fil arrived and we've had a curry for dinner. I could probably have resisted an extra bhaji and definitely didn't need a shandy with full fat lemonade.

It wouldn't have been too bad though but fil brought some toffee puddings. At 470 cals a pop. And then there's the cream.

I'm logging it all though and it's so obvious where I can make changes. Another walk today and one planned for tomorrow so it's not all bad.

I carried baby today so heart rate was up too.

I don't think it can be a complete fail if you are learning from it...

I do love bhajis though, am certain I would have struggled with that as well!

Forgot to add, my user name on mfp is also animalmagic84

justonemorecake Sun 29-Dec-13 20:26:58

I wouldn't have been able to resist all that delicious food either! At least not at the moment. I want to change that habit.

Applesnotcakes Sun 29-Dec-13 20:31:27

Puggy mum, you're right, MFP is brilliant for helping you see where the calories are coming from. It's the first step really, understanding what you're actually eating. Easier then to wrk out how to enjoy food, feel satisfied etc but with fewer calories.

OohMrDarcy Sun 29-Dec-13 20:31:32

I'm in!

I am currently 230lb (doesn't scare me so much in that format as can't easily translate to stones in my head) if successful, it will take my bmi down from 39 is blush h to 30 - would be very happy!

This last year I've been concentrating on making me feel better about myself, and now I feel ready to work in the body side of things

No set plan here, just eating healthier and exercising more smile

MummyDuckAndDuckling Sun 29-Dec-13 20:42:45

Oh great to have lots of new mfp friends. I created a new profile with my mn name as I don't want to link it to my previous rl account

Yay, ready to go!

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Sun 29-Dec-13 21:01:44

I'm in. My new scales arrived yesterday, I weigh 15 stone, that's half a stone heavier than when the old ones broke sad. I'm starting on 2nd Jan.

Mfp app is playing up but I'm OnlySeven if anyone wants to add me smile

After a bad day ive taken myself off to bed to watch the Christmas Call the Midwife.

Prior to this thread I would have brough crackers and pate with me but eating mindfully has got me thinking that I dont need them, and didnt need them before, just wanted them.

Yay Ken. I ate the kids leftovers in a mindless fashion, but then didn't also have my tea as well. Support works :-)

Ahh r

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Sun 29-Dec-13 21:04:44

Wow that was quick! I have a friend already smile

OohMrDarcy Sun 29-Dec-13 21:13:24

motivated by just joining this thread, I have just done day 1 of the 30 day shred, first time in a year or so and wasn't as bad as I was expecting, so woo! Might even do it tomorrow grin

OnlySeven you should be able to add people from yours friend's friend list. I'm the one that ends _girl and everyone on my friend list is from this thread, apart from the one who hasn't logged in for a couple of weeks, user name starting sam...

You should quickly build up a fab support network if you add as many as you can :-)

isitnormal Sun 29-Dec-13 21:21:41

I'm in too. I'm 13st 5, BMI 31 - never been so heavy in my life :-( I keep trying to convince myself that at least 2 stone of that must be my huge boobs!!!
Throughout my twenties I effortlessly weighed between 8 and 9 stone - I'm 34 now and it's really caught up with me.
A 52lb weight loss would take me to 9st 9 and a BMI slap bang in the healthy range - 22.5.
To be honest, I'd settle for weighing 11st, which is the weight I was when I met my fiance in 2011. We're getting married in 2015 and I'm determined to lose it before then.
I haven't been able to exercise for months due to plantar fasciitis in my foot, but thanks to a recent cortisone injection I'm ready to hit the gym again - I just need to stay away from the booze, because that's definitely where my excess calorie intake comes from.
I'm starting Jan 1st and I WILL do it!

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Sun 29-Dec-13 21:39:27

Thanks wood.

Even though I'm starting 2nd I might track everything for the next couple of days anyway so I can terrify myself into healthy eating see where I'm going wrong.

Curioustiger Sun 29-Dec-13 21:59:59

Hi all, can i join? My story is that four months ago, inspired by Mumsnet, I started 5:2 and for the first time in my life I have been losing weight ... at a lb a week. I have found it to be incredibly easy (really). However over the last month I have found I've started to plateau despite sticking very closely to my 500 calories on fast days. I've lost 1.5 stone but ideally I would lose a further stone (or 1.5 stone as a stretch target). Therefore signing in for help and support! I've added a random selection of you on MFP...

BrokenButNotFinished Sun 29-Dec-13 22:24:35

I've started trying to add people on mfp (my username is same as my mn name). And I'll put the batteries in my scales tomorrow.

I will probably weigh in on Monday - and I probably won't put too much welly into tracking until next week, when the beginning of term looms.

I will try the 5:2 thing, which I have dabbled with half-heartedly before. I will try giving the drink a miss for January, not least because I currently have a dose of festive cystitis hmm. Re: exercise - I do British Military Fitness and a fair bit of walking. Some swimming. I was also doing zumba and pilates until recently, but the classes have changed, so I need to rearrange. I find that if I'm doing pilates, all the other exercise is easier.

I have my own body weight in cheese in the fridge... blush

Ponyphysio Sun 29-Dec-13 22:30:29

I'm in. I need to join my fitness pal, but i will use the same name to keep it simple. See you on the other side!!

DearPrudence Sun 29-Dec-13 22:37:44

I'd like to join please. Will set up MFP tomorrow and post properly but marking place for now. smile

steppemum Sun 29-Dec-13 22:57:00

right, I was thinking about doing this in the new year, and this thread has inspired me.
I joined a thread last year and lost 1 stone and about half has crept back on.

I am 16 stone (and some lbs) and need to be 11 stone or under.

Not sure how to do it yet, but I will give it a go.

I like concrete goals too, so goal one is my size 16 jeans which I bought when I started loosing weight last year. I have the same style in 18, fitting into them was goal one last year. I am still able to fit in them (just) so get down to the size below would be a good start.

Chants73 Mon 30-Dec-13 07:33:28

After saying I wasn't going to weigh self til the 2nd, I decided to do it today. 17stone 9. Bugger. Intend to eat sensibly for a week, before first fast on6th. It will get me in habit for tracking and recognising calories values in food before stepping it up next week. Mfp name is purplechants. Not worked out how to add people yet, but will try

loopybear Mon 30-Dec-13 07:38:46

I've weighed myself this morning and was horrified to find I was 15 stone. On my phone and couldn't copy and paste everyone's stats. Have taken selfies in mirror to motivate / see progress

Height 5'10",Clothes size 18
Start weight 15 st, Target weight 14 st 2lbs (52 lbs) Mfp loopywaterbabe 5:2 and exercise

Wittsend13 Mon 30-Dec-13 08:03:32

I'm in! I'm 5'2 and weighed in at 13st to am four stone overweight and I'm starting my diet 2nd January. I will he doing exante to drop two stones and then onto good old calorie counting.smile

I've been tracking to keep me motivated before starting properly today. DH and I weighed in this morning (we have a teensy tiny wager going on who can lose the weight first!) and I've lost 3lbs already :-) So am down from 14.2 to 13.13. DH is 17.11 and his target is 14.1

Game on, people!

Wow, this thread is really going strong-it's been such a motivation for me, knowing that we are all in this together. Every time I think of over eating, I remember that you'll all be able to see it in MFP food diarygrin

I can't remember who recommended the Beck diet book, but it arrived yesterday and it's really good. It's not a "diet book", it helps you to work out why you over eat and why you can't cope with hunger.

The part about not being able to cope with hunger really hit home, I really panic if I think that I won't be able to eat in the next few hours. I hate feeling hungry. Of course, this all stems from watching DM suffer from eating disorders during my childhood. The book helps to remind me that feeling hungry is ok, and you only have to eat until you are reasonably full- not stuffed.

bobblypop Mon 30-Dec-13 08:49:54

morning all.
I have just weighed myself for first time in ages and am totally disgusted with myself. sad I now weigh 13 stone 9 lb which is even worse than when I started losing weight a few years ago and was 13 stone 7. And I thought I hadn't quite put it all back on .sad (and I'm only 5 ft 3 sad)
Anyway, using it as a wake up call. I know I can do it cause I've done it before!!
Ate fairly well yesterday and did 3 mile run. Feeling motivated to stick with it today...fingers crossed. Going to weigh again next Monday and would be fab to be at least back to 13 stone 7 !
Good luck everyone who's started for today! grin

Oh and 2lbs off since the thread started!

bobblypop Mon 30-Dec-13 08:53:19

apply that book sounds interesting, I would love to get to the route of why I eat the way I do. I know I CAN eat sensibly as I have previously lost 4 stone and gone down to size 10. But to then just spend 2 years putting it all back on when I swore I wouldn't makes no sense at all confused I also watched my Mum very unwell and in and out of hospital with Anorexia when I was growing up and do wonder if it's connected. Off to check out book...

bobblypop Mon 30-Dec-13 08:53:52

and well done on weight loss apply !

octopusinasantasack Mon 30-Dec-13 08:59:31

3.2 pounds down, now 253 pounds.

shutitweirdo Mon 30-Dec-13 09:09:24

1st official weigh in. Was 238 now 234 more to do with previously weighing in the evening

ellietrying Mon 30-Dec-13 09:35:25

set up mfp - username ellietrying

Feel free to add me! I still haven't decided the best way for me to lose weight. I was thinking about maybe a challenge. I very rarely drink so was thinking maybe no chocolate for January? It would definitely give me a kickstart. Will start eating healthier and take it from there I think!

MyNameIsKenAdams first weigh in started @ 181, todays weight 178, progress = -3 whooop!!

Oh hang on....
Start 13,1
Last weigh in 12,13
This weigh in 12,10

Crap at converting at to lb and back again!

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Mon 30-Dec-13 10:26:41

Well done to everyone loosing already!

I'm not starting properly until Thursday, I think I might give the local slimming world group a try next week.

BrokenButNotFinished Mon 30-Dec-13 10:45:03

I weighed. It was horrifying. :-(

12.5 stone. Which since I'm only 5 foot 1 makes my BMI an obese one.

I would like to be 8 stone, but would be happy with 9.

Not sure who I've added on mfp and who not...

justonemorecake Mon 30-Dec-13 10:53:49

I've decided to stick with the sales that make me half a stone heavier, so first official weigh in:

Start weight: 17st1lb
First weigh in: 17st

So a loss of 1lb. Not much, but I did only start two days ago!

HugAndRoll Mon 30-Dec-13 10:54:01

I'm not sure who I've added either. Mfp username is the same as my MN nn so feel free to add me.

Today and tomorrow I'm tracking my usual diet. This will hopefully both shock me and motivate me.

PuggyMum Mon 30-Dec-13 11:17:23

1lb off. Which given I've not really started yet am very pleased with!
Start weight 14st.
Today's weight 13st 13

MummyDuckAndDuckling Mon 30-Dec-13 11:18:55

Well done all so far!!

I've had a healthy breakfast and planning to chart with mfp. To be -2lbs a week, I've to eat aprox 1,500 cals which I know I can do if I cut out all the crap! Not much in house till I go shopping but plenty of soup etc to keep me going for a few days. I'll try get to Asda after new year

OohMrDarcy Mon 30-Dec-13 11:41:21

Wow there is some good initial weightloss going on here! I am going to weigh in on a monday and try not to do it in between!

Quite pleased by how I managed my shred last night, so looking forward to doing that again - muscles fine today too. Not sure whether to expect a weight loss from that, but have lost many inches in the past, so may measure too if I can be brave enough

darwiniandreams Mon 30-Dec-13 12:42:15

I'll be going out later to buy a tape measure to track the inches too with copious amounts of alcohol to numb the shock wink I may weigh a little earlier this week til my official start date just out of curiosity

Ive had a pair of beautiful leather knee high boots delivered today which are too tight on the calves. A bargain at only £35, I will keep them and use as a target for thinner calves. Only trouble is that I gain muscle mass there so will take an age with zumba classes sad

I've had to give up on fasting today as I was just so ridiculously hungry I couldn't concentrate on work. But will stick to the 1500 cals that MFP says I need to eat to lose 1lb per week. No way is DH beating me at this one!

I keep hanging onto the fact that if I can lose 52lbs (which I can!), that will mean my BMI is 22.2. I've lost 3lbs already, going from 30.1 to 29.6. Meaning I am now merely very overweight as opposed to obese, which is nice to hear.

The strange thing is, my perception of DH is that he is very overweight. Much more so than I, but if you calculate our starting BMI's, mine was 30.1 and his was 32.9. So although he is definitely obese, the discrepancy was not as great as I thought... His 52lbs off still puts him in the overweight category (26.0) whereas mine takes me to 22.2.

The lowest it has ever been in my adult life is 25.2 and I maintained that for precisely 1 week! At that weight I felt relatively comfortable, but I think another stone off from that and I would feel fabulous!

I may be overanalysing the numbers to be honest. I never do that, ever... Although I am an engineer in my professional life and numbers make the world go round for me!

TaillessChicken Mon 30-Dec-13 13:27:09

Woodburner it's ok not to fast if you have to work...like you say you can still be sensible. Well done for getting out of obese and into overweight, that's my goal as well - one of them.

KenAdams I would love some boots like that, I will treat myself to some when I get to my goal weight I think. I am looking forward to being able to buy clothes that I like rather than what fits.

Justonemore A pound is still a loss - well done.

I'm feeling pleased with myself as I went to the supermarket having not had breakfast. I realised when there that I had to eat before I drove the car home as I was feeling dizzy; I was sensible and looked at the calories and chose a modest 120 calorie low fat bar and had that - just one, not the whole pack of 5 smile

Curioustiger Mon 30-Dec-13 13:33:41

Wood burner, did you have breakfast? Breakfast is fatal on 5:2. It just revs your tummy up and gets it ready for more!

TalkinPeace Mon 30-Dec-13 13:41:00

Important things to remember

- at this time of year the first half stone you will lose will be fluid and undigested food - so it will go fast but then the rate will slow down

- your body will react to the reduced intake in fits and starts so you have to keep your eyes on the long term goal and not "fall off the wagon"

- do not go overboard. To lose a pound a week, if you are currently over BMI 25, all you need to do is to eat within your TDEE

- drink AT LEAST two pints of water a day as hunger is actually thirst much of the time

if you eat like a slim person you will become a slim person

GoodKingWencesLACK Mon 30-Dec-13 13:46:27

I have exactly 52 lbs to lose to be at my fighting weight....I'm in, but will probably lurk a lot as I often only have time to read and run...

LackaDAISYcal Mon 30-Dec-13 14:01:15

oooh, that was my Christmas name change....back in civvies again grin

atomicyoghurt Mon 30-Dec-13 14:13:25

I've not started yet but I've been thinking I might take January to try and get a bit more healthy and then start reducing calories in Feb.
Little things like actually eating some fruit and drinking some water.

I don't want to start out all guns blazing and then stop because I can't maintain it. I'd rather ramp up slowly...

Yes, I had breakfast. Mental note for tomorrow - will try without breakfast. I'm eating way inside my TDEE (about 10% below) though, so I should lose weight even without the fasting. My BMI is 29.6 so I could eat more and still lose weight?

Not sure exactly how the TDEE thing works - is it the amount that keeps you steady weight?

DH knows I am attempting to eat healthier, but when I explained today thar I am doing 52lbs in 52wks he looked aghast and said that would make me too skinny grin

Have agreed to re-assess as and when he thinks IM too skinny Iwish!

My DH was a bit taken aback at the 52lbs thing but only because he doesn't think I'm fat <bless - I'm a heifer!>

I've been overweight the entirety of our 15 year relationship to some degree or another, so I'm not sure he's ready for a slim version - if I ever get there...

But he is pretty committed himself - just got a text that he's been and joined the local gym today. Mind you, he can't resist a bet and hates to lose!

TalkinPeace Mon 30-Dec-13 15:20:07

TDEE If you put in your age, weight, height and set activity level to low, that will tell you the maximum you need each day to stay the same weight.
If you eat less than that and move around more, the weight will fall off at a steady pace.
And its a very big but
Please use MFP and start weighing your food - just to find out how many calories you are normally eating
is quite eye opening ...

And yes, if you can get your other halves and grown up children to embark on the challenge with you (I still fast twice a week with my DH as he still has weight to lose) then you are far, far more likely to succeed both this year and for ever.

Curioustiger Mon 30-Dec-13 15:20:11

Wood burner try and go as long as you can for a fast day without eating anything. I find I am peckish about half an hour after I wake up which then subsides. I then get hungry again at about 11am and that ramps up until I am properly hungry at midday. I just push on through though and feel better after 1pm ish. I try and keep myself busy until at least 5pm. All the while i have plenty of drinks. Sounds impossible but I used to be a grazer, if I can do it, you can!

atomicyoghurt Mon 30-Dec-13 15:24:04

When I do a fast day I have to have breakfast or I end up binging mid afternoon.

I have half a banana for breakfast. This is enough to tide me over, I find.

Then I have a maximum of 200 calories for lunch. Something like sushi.

Then as long as I exercise in the day can have a decent dinner.

I also drink A Lot on the fast days. Diet coke and tea and water.

Cluesue Mon 30-Dec-13 15:27:22

I'm in,I have 7 stone to lose,I've lost and gaind 4stones about six times since my early twenties(37)but I am now the biggest I have ever been, nearly , 5ft 7in and size 22.

headoverheels Mon 30-Dec-13 15:29:13

I'm in. Starting weight 13st 0lb this morning - a bit higher than I was hoping for. I'm on My Fitness Pal - username mrspepperpotty.

Cluesue Mon 30-Dec-13 15:29:14

Sorry nearly 18st

Right. Will try tomorrow and see how long I can go. I reckon if I can just do one fast day, it should get easier!

My TDEE is 1983cals which sounds huge? I'm aiming for about 1500-1600 at the moment using MFP.

And I have unearthed the kitchen scales to weigh ALL portions. Do you know how little 45g of breakfast cereal is?!? Minute. I've been eating double portions for years, and probably not just of cereal either.

Think we are going to get a shock when we start weighing pasta and rice etc..

Cluesue Mon 30-Dec-13 15:38:00

I'm on mirtazipine which can cause weight gain,I just hope it doesn't hinder weight loss

TalkinPeace Mon 30-Dec-13 15:39:06

Do come and join the 5:2 threads .... 33 is just finishing, 34 will go live tonight
^the same applies to anybody who is going to try fasting as apart of their tactics.

BUT ( there's often a but with my posts grin)
If you are fasting, you can eat up to your TDEE on the other days because all of your shortfall is in the two days.

The pattern that has worked wonders for eatriskier
Monday = 500 calories
Tuesday = TDEE less 10%
Wednesday = TDEE less 10%
Thursday = 500 calories
Friday = TDEE
Saturday = just don't ask wink
Sunday = TDEE

Im out tonight for dinner and cocktails with family and friends so know I will go well over, but hopefully will choose sensibly from the options there - spirit and fruit juice cocktail, glass of.wine woth the meal and a g&SLt after. Foodwise I cant decide what is worse - the carby bready stuff or the fatty ham.and salty olive stuff confused

I like the look of the 'just don't ask' day! Presume it isn't a massive blowout, more just a normal pre-diet day!

TalkinPeace Mon 30-Dec-13 16:11:38

I try not to think what my calorie intake is on a splurge day bigchocfrenzy lives up to her name on hers
BUT because we are leaving leeway all week,
that one day of cocktails and canapes and wine and cheese and more wine does little harm ( KenAdams smile)

SunshineOnACrappyDay Mon 30-Dec-13 16:21:53

Can I join? I'm FabulousJasper on MFP and have about 5 stone to lose.

Bithurt Mon 30-Dec-13 16:45:24

Just weighed myself and after 2 weeks off of sw I've put on about 8.5lbs! Gutted but expected it. Getting weighed tonight. Thing is, we have another Xmas dinner on Sunday plus new year.

roosterroo Mon 30-Dec-13 17:31:48

Back at work today ,first fast day. This really took some planning!
I had a coffee at home then was able to hang on till 10ish for some grapefruit. I found i have drunk gallons of water tho`

Got to stick with it till the end of the day now lookong for housework thats not in the kitchensmile

SunshineOnACrappyDay Mon 30-Dec-13 17:42:55

I've just been on the Wii - for the first time in 3 years, apparently...

It's telling me that I've lost 10lbs since I last weighed in - fat chance! I'll carry on using the machine at Boots smile

I'm calorie counting and using a lowish GI plan. It seems to work for me. However, I've still got a lot of socialising between now and next week.

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Mon 30-Dec-13 18:00:05

sunshine that's what i need to lose too

SunshineOnACrappyDay Mon 30-Dec-13 19:23:41

We can do it sleighbells smile

AutumnWind Mon 30-Dec-13 19:38:43

I need to join as well. I got on really well with the 5:2 diet, but could only maintain it on holiday- can't do it with the pressure of work.

By losing 1 lb a week, I should be at my ideal weight by September. Can't be that hard, can it confused

D you think it's possible to lose weight without feeling hungry? I hate feeling hungry (actually, I don't mind feeling starving, just not hungry- I'm ok to go all day without eating, but when I start, then I binge...).

Is there anyone else here with a v young baby or bresstfeeding? Reason I ask is because a) I need coping strategies that don't have me diving for the bottom of the biscuit tin or drinking strong sweet coffee and b) I am concerned about milk supply as I really struggled to shift baby weight after dc1 without affecting supply.

I also have IBS, that I hope will improve when I start to lose weight.

MrsClauswearsspanx Mon 30-Dec-13 19:53:49

BigWelly I don't have a tiny baby but am still breastfeeding (she's 10 months). I find my body doesn't
want to let go of an ounce without a struggle!

I think the answer for me will be to reduce carbs.

WhenDoISleep Mon 30-Dec-13 20:08:36

I'm in.

Lost 6 stone 5 years ago and then had two babies. I'm just over three stone up on my lightest ever adult weight and now DS2 is a toddler, I'm determined to sort my self out this year.

4 stone would be a miracle (it would make me 9st 12lb - I was probably a pre-teen last time I weighed that little) and 3 stone would be fantastic. Realistically I think I will aim for two stone to start with - I don't seem to lose weight easily.

Planning on trying to get back on the WW wagon, with maybe a little 5:2 as well, but not likely to do that until later in the year as DS2 is still BF.

Exercise is tricky, not much space and dodgy floors - have tried The Shred before, but it was hard on my knees. Any recommendations for some other short workout ideas?

I did a low carb diet (with BIWI) when I was breastfeeding dc1, it completely trashed my milk supply, and my d&v was about 18months at the time. I really prefer it as a WOE but have had to continue to eat carbs this time cutting out refined sugar and processed foods while upping my water intake will be my way forward.

Luckily I can't eat cheese. But the bone crushing sleep deprivation is eroding my willpower

I also return to work next week. After seven months maternity leave. Emotionally finding it extremely difficult to contemplate handing my dc2, most beautiful wonderful child over to others to look after. Separation anxiety exists both ways wink but in preperation I did make this thread of lunch ideas of anyone wants inspiration.

OohMrDarcy Mon 30-Dec-13 20:46:53

Thats shred day 2 done here! Legs were very shaky to begin with but then found my mojo... did better overall than day 1, so am pleased. Also measured my arm, bust, waist, hips and thigh.... hoping inch loss there will keep me motivated if there is no weight loss next week! I shan't share my initial measurements though, wouldn't want to scare you

Can't remember who it was, but someone was disheartened by 'only' losing 1lb..... that is what we signed up for remember! Anything else is a bonus! grin

Funny you should say that, my skin is clear at the moment, I hadn't linked it to my water consumption...

Please add me to your MFP friends too. My usernane is ummasud.

I started the 3 week Jumpstart to Skinny plan today. It promises up to 20lbs lost in three weeks and I lost about 8 the last time I was on it even though I was not diligent at all in the last week. So I've got high hopes. I want to jumpstart and have three weeks of intense weight loss then move onto 5:2.

Bloody DH opened the after eights.

darwiniandreams Mon 30-Dec-13 22:49:21

Sorry woodburnerbabe your name was not meant to crossed through blush

TheDietStartsTomorrow Tue 31-Dec-13 02:47:32

Talkinpeace, 8lbs in three weeks is not unhealthy weight loss at all. It's not uncommon to lose a little extra in the first week of any weight loss programme as your body sheds a lot of water weight as you cut back on salt and bloating foods and because of the extra water you drink that helps reduce water retainment. After that, I lost 2lbs per week in the second and third week which is perfectly healthy.

Jumpstart to Skinny is only supposed to be a three week plan but it is based on a sensible and responsible method and is a lot healthier than the title suggests. Bob Harper is a professional with an impressive track record and is not suggesting any sort of extreme starvation diet. You really have to know more about it before declaring that it's a bad idea.

Misfitless Tue 31-Dec-13 07:45:19

I didn't read the thread at all yesterday.

And now there are 413 messages...it seems like loads of people have already started.

Is there anyone out there who hasn't already started?

Autumnwind I can relate to that - I can go till mid afternoon without eating, too, but like you said, once I start....

I've eaten ridiculous amounts of chocolate, just because I'm starting a diet tomorrow and I'm going cold turkey..that 's my problem, I'm either on a diet or I'm over eating...there's never any in between with me.

Good luck everyone!

CecyHall Tue 31-Dec-13 08:12:00

I haven't started yet, I'm starting Thursday as DH will be back at work and things should be a bit more normal.

darwiniandreams my skin is also very prone to spots, oily / dry patches etc. But 5 days of draining the local reservoir dry seem to have worked wonders - I woke up this morning and my skin is smooth and clear, not seen that in years... I've gone through good patches before, but never managed to link it to diet and water.

Seems a bit obvious now, to be honest blush

pussinwellyboots Tue 31-Dec-13 08:20:27

Can I join too? Have about.4 stone to loose and I know that everyday things would be that bit easier if there was less of me! Am planning to.use mfp (when I get tablet for my birthday.next week as it takes up too.much room on my phone) other than that by eating sensibly and having fruit rather than rubbish between meals. Also trying to exercise more.

Misfitless - I haven't started yet. I'm easing up, but not planning to start using mfp until Tuesday when the children will be back at school. And I can then go to BMF on Wednesday.

Applesnotcakes Tue 31-Dec-13 09:24:30

I'm starting on the 2nd - in the middle of a food and alcohol fest at the moment at my brothers house. He's a really good cook so I'm not holding back!

Looking forward to getting going again though. Definitely feeling a bit sluggish from all the Christmas indulgence. I lost 2 and a half stone over 2013, a slow process but relatively painless and if I do it again this year I'll be happy.

Have managed to avoid breakfast, so the fast is on!

Although I've just put our planned evening meal into mpf and it's over the 500, so need to trim that so I can have some lunch.

Earthymama Tue 31-Dec-13 09:59:06

From my over-heated fleecy nest on the sofa, with my head aching and joints killing me, I am in too.

I want both DP and I to feel better and love Life and Living again.

I get really down in winter and I know eating sensibly and well will contribute massively to my mental health.

I have had to stop eating wheat and compensated by eating Lindt choc bars, an obvious substitution, I feel.

Sadly I seem to wearing the results and don't like it!!

I am therefore seeking advice on vegetarian, gluten free, filling food plan ideas.

HugAndRoll Tue 31-Dec-13 10:18:31

I've not started healthy eating but as I mentioned up thread I've started logging on mfp (same username as here if you want to add me). It's a real eye opener!

MummyDuckAndDuckling Tue 31-Dec-13 11:19:35

Had a decent day yesterday, knew I would be grabbing dinner on the go last night so ate well through the day and in the end I was over but not a massive amount.

In the middle of big NYE clean up so hopefully burning some cals whilst I work! grin

Just made a shopping list for the first time in years, and I plan to stick to it!

Hopefully this will stop me from picking up "treats" and food that I just do not need.Since reading the Beck Diet (I'm nowhere near finished all the cognitive behaviour tasks, takes6 weeks apparently) I've noticed that I'm less panicky about feeling hungry. I'm picking less and drinking more water.

I'm gingerchubs on MFP btw

justonemorecake Tue 31-Dec-13 12:21:05

I need to get better at making shopping lists. I always go and just pick what I fancy. I'm sure it's more unhealthy and more expensive. I also often make the mistake of going food shopping when I'm hungry and then I end up buying lots of junk!

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Tue 31-Dec-13 13:15:07

I done a tesco order last night to come on Thursday, that's when I start. I've ordered lots of celery and peppers which I plan to have cut up ready in the fridge for snacking on. Also rice cakes and plenty of fruit. I was actually a little shocked by paying attention to how many biscuits, crisps and chocolate are in my favourite items blush

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Tue 31-Dec-13 13:16:17

Oh and I went along to my local slimming works meeting for the first time last night and it wasn't on, next week feels like a long time awaysad

OnlySeven Tesco is WATCHING you...

Anyone else got The Twitch - I really want to get on the scales!

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Tue 31-Dec-13 13:34:01

Yes, doubt I've lost since yesterday though!

Oh yes, but must resist until Monday. I'm afraid I went feral on the Coop sandwiches, so no fast for me today - but if I just eat what we've planned for tea, I will still be under my daily calories, so I think I'm going to have to accept that fasting on a work day is not really going to happen. Too hungry to concentrate, and I really do need to be able to concentrate. Have closed my mfp diary for the day to try and ensure that I don't eat anything else.

And will dig out crochet hooks for tonight, I think I need some wristwarmers <desperate attempt to stay away from the biscuits!>

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Tue 31-Dec-13 14:25:13

Good twitch, I've lost another 1lb! I'm thinking to make it clearer to see we should have a format for posting weight loss.

Since last weigh-in: 1lb
Total lost: 2lb

wood being under your calorie allowance is the important thing.

I don't think I'm going to be able to resist weighing tomorrow morning. I've been eating less per day than I have for weeks.

Also, I found a lovely lovely pair of size 12 jeans that used to fit me perfectly. I'm about 3" round my waist away from fitting into them at the moment - I have decided that they are my target for now - weight loss is great, but I would like to have a more tangible target as well. I'm currently tight in a 16...

emmief77 Tue 31-Dec-13 14:39:57

talkinpeace suggested I came over to you join you?? fgrin

I'm 5ft 3 and no idea how much I weigh, all I know is I wear size 16 clothes blush, and have stopped taking care of myself. Went to an exercise class on Sunday, and saw my reflection in their large full length mirrors that cover one length of the studio. gulp... sad

TalkinPeace Tue 31-Dec-13 15:17:04

there is a poster of the 5:2 threads called breadandwine
he is a vegan grangad who runs breadmaking classes - he's a mine of information for yummy food using only parts of the supermarket.

This thread is a corker.
Lots of people setting themselves a really good goal and motivating each other to stick with it.

TalkinPeace Tue 31-Dec-13 15:19:22

Interesting tip for sustainable weight loss maintenance / healthy eating

Look up your TDEE - lots of calculators online.
Now look up your TDEE for where you want to be in a year's time - so a year older but 52lb lighter.
See if you can eat within THAT TDEE during the week
Because if you get used to eating the right amount for the slim you, you'll get slim and stay slim.

TalkinPeace can I clarify something with you?

My current TDEE is 1983cals. If I ate this every day, would I lose weight? My TDEE for 1 year from now is 1783cals. If I eat this every day, will I gradually drift down to 10st6 and then stay there?

I don't quite understand exactly how it works <feels a bit stupid>

TalkinPeace Tue 31-Dec-13 16:21:31

If you stay within 1983 every day, you will stay the same weight.

If you stay within 1983 five days a week and 500 calories two days ( 5:2 intermittent fasting ) you will lose weight.

If you stay within 1783 every day you will steadily lose weight but not very fast.

If you stay within 1783 four days a week, 500 two days a week and relax one day a week you will lose weight noticably faster .....

And 1783 calories a day allows for some rather nice meals smile

mootime Tue 31-Dec-13 16:25:48

So I'm planning on starting on Monday properly. Is there anyone else starting then? 6wo is having his tongue tie cut on Thursday so it's going to be a long weekend and I really don't want to set myself up for a bad start.
Good going to those of you who have already started and good luck to those who are starting tomorrow.

TalkinPeace thanks for that, got it!
So if I eat 1750 5 days a week and 500 2 days a week, I should lose weight in a sustainable way. That's an average of 1400 per day, I think I can do that!

HugAndRoll Tue 31-Dec-13 19:58:19

Tonight is my last of eating in my current manner. I've planned tomorrow's dinner and will meal plan for the rest of the week and just buy what I need, possibly online so I'm not tempted.

HugAndRoll Wed 01-Jan-14 00:32:49

Happy new year everyone. Here's to a smaller, healthier year.

Ohhelpohnoitsa Wed 01-Jan-14 07:42:14

Happy New Year and good luck to those starting today. Fro. tomorrow, I drop diet coke & bread for January - see how that goes smile

GoGoveGo Wed 01-Jan-14 08:07:21

Happy New Year and good luck everybody - we can do this smile

TheOnlySevenSleighbells Wed 01-Jan-14 08:54:23

Happy new year everyone. Good luck to everyone starting today. DH was working last night so we're celebrating tonight and I'm starting tomorrow.

Applesnotcakes Wed 01-Jan-14 09:30:14

Happy new year everyone. Just think how much better we will feel a year from now. More active, more healthy, more confident. Go us!

Happy New Year! I'm going to try fasting again today - if nothing else, and I fail, I've got lots of calories for lunch and tea as I seem quite able to miss breakfast...

justonemorecake Wed 01-Jan-14 09:41:22

Happy New Year! Just think - in a years time we should all be at least 52lb lighter and feeling much healthier and fitter! smile

Good luck to everyone starting today.

Ohhelp - I really need to drop the diet coke as well. I drink far too much of it. Maybe that will be one of my changes for January...

PowderMum Wed 01-Jan-14 09:51:33

Happy New Year, I've weighed myself this morning and started MFP

PowderMum, what's your MFP username? I've weighed myself this morning and have lost 1lb since last weigh in so I'm pretty happy now :-)

The children are trying to force feed me chocolate and getting confused when I refuse it - they aren't used to that!

HugAndRoll Wed 01-Jan-14 11:50:40

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I'm sure you all feel the same.

I've planned my dinner so I know what calories I have for the rest of the day. I need to meal plan for the rest of the week too so I can go shopping. Does anyone have any low cal recipe suggestions?

bobblypop Wed 01-Jan-14 12:26:49

happy new year all.
Last 2 days not gone quite to plan, but still better than they have been. Have been out for a run this morning and am just setting up mfp and working out the best way to tackle this...
Good luck to everyone - and here's to a new slim 2014...bring it on!

As of today I'm breaking my sugar addiction, cold turkey even going for black coffee over creamy swet coffee. Its rhe only bit of rhe low carb approach (other rhan drink lots) whochni can do when breastfeeding.

DH is fully on board and has decided to go for a three stone loss. We are portion controlling to begin with using MFP, ditching sweets and treats, and using smaller bowls/plates etc.

I've also made a long long list of things I'd like to do of an evening so that instead of sitting on the sofa with a rumblings tummy I'll be sewing, batch cooking or if the baby lets me I might even get out of the house!

Other tips I remember working when I lost weight after dc1 were to brush your teeth if you got hungry, also drink a glass of water if you felt hungry and only weigh once a week to get an average weight loss.

Can someone recommend a link to the TFEE business? On phone so can't easily search thread. Muchly appreciated

Apologies for the spelling. Baby helping!

Count me in! I've prob got 60lbs to lose (writing it down to make it real) -lost most of it low carbing before but didn't do much exercise - planning on c25K this time as well.

Friend of mine gave me a tip - if you really really want fizzy drinks, put decent no added sugar squash into fizzy water. Less artificial sweetener than diet coke etc. still has some sugar though.

CheckedPjs Wed 01-Jan-14 14:38:44

I'm in smile I haven't read the thread but at midnight in stead of kissing my boyfriend I was pouring Pepsi Max's and diet coke down the sink and shoving the crap food on top of the cupboard where I can't reach!

I'm 12.10lbs now so I'll be 9.3lbs and in my healthy weight range

Help. Kitchen crisis and rather than bulk cook over several days and work out as I go I have just had to bulk cook several different casseroles! (Meat was in danger of going off).

So. Bolognaise made with 2 tins of tomatoes, 3 onions, 1.4kg beef mince how many meals for 2 adults would you serve that up as?

And a pork tagine - 2 x 225g chorizo, 2 tins butter beans, 1,3kg pork leg - how many meals? Its a very dense meal so had with pitta breads and salad rather than any additional carbs.

OpposableThumbs Wed 01-Jan-14 17:04:53

I'm in. Was horrified to find I am now the heaviest I have ever been and my bmi has tipped in to being obese.

I'm now 14st 5lb so aiming for 10st 9lb by the end of the year.

I'm going to attempt low carbing, I am a bit scared of it though as I love carbs but I have been very good today.

bigwelly I normally allow about 125-150g mince per average adult when making mince. 500g with 1 tin toms does us 1 evening meal for average me and greedy DH, then smaller lunch portions for the following day. We have frequently been known to eat the lot though...

Not sure about the tagine, but the meat allowance should be similar I think.

opposable you are pretty much where I am! I was 14.2, just tipped into obese and am aiming for 10.6 - which I've never been, ever, but I think it's a good place to aim for as will give me BMI=22.2

MummyDuckAndDuckling Wed 01-Jan-14 19:20:50

Question. What do you do when your feeling 'hungry' but don't really want to eat anything? I had a late lunch/early dinner so starting to feel peckish confused. I've got about 100 cals left going by mfp. I might have a cup of tea and take the Xmas tree down, hopefully that might stop me nibbling.
This is hard! blushgrin

HugAndRoll Wed 01-Jan-14 19:24:52

It is hard. I've still got a yogurt to eat and 3 cups of coffee which have been accounted form before I closed mfp. I'm well below today but doing some damage limitation from Christmas grin

MummyDuckAndDuckling Wed 01-Jan-14 19:26:16

I drink tea black so I don't have the cals from milk to add in. Ill see how I go once I start on the tree. Should keep my busy!

Curioustiger Wed 01-Jan-14 19:28:15

Hartleys 10 cal jellies are fantastic I think, I am not sure they have any nutritional value at all but they are quite filling... I have two at a time.

willowash Wed 01-Jan-14 19:38:05

I'm in, just done my fist days food diary on my fitness pall. I'm 5foot (cough 4"11) haha and I'm 15 stone, morbidly obese and only 28. Disgusted with myself but ready and determined to loose as much as I can

Filled in my food for today and have 408 cals left - treat or save??

BrokenButNotFinished Wed 01-Jan-14 20:01:39

Are you actually hungry...? Perhaps thinking of foods as a 'treat' is what got us into this pickle in the first place...

Am at work til 11.30pm so if I get hungry I will have a banana.

I am starting in earnest tomorrow. Today was a nibbling-leftovers day...

I still need to work out what to do for the games evening / party I am invited to on Friday. It starts at 6.30. Will need to leave here just before 6. Am out with dd unti around 5. So not sure whether to eat first or to skip dinner and eat nibbles at the party??

Well done to those of you who have started already. I wanted to but did not manage it in the end...

justonemorecake Wed 01-Jan-14 20:21:14

When I'm hungry I've started either having a glass of water or finding something to keep me busy.

Chants73 Wed 01-Jan-14 20:29:12

Not had time to read all the posts, but havr found using mfp enlightening in terms of calories etc. Realised I eat far too little protein (vegetarian and dont like eggs) so made a load of lentil soup and need to do more beans etc. Have not been trying to eat less since, just being more mindful until first fast on monday. Feeling positive at the moment. Start moving more tomorrow....

emmief77 Wed 01-Jan-14 20:39:27

Thanks again talkinpeace flowers

Going to brave the scales in the morning shock and look at my TDEE

emmief77 Wed 01-Jan-14 20:48:03

Okay guys gonna brave the scales tonight, was gonna wait til tomorrow before any meals....

MotherGirth Wed 01-Jan-14 20:51:13

Ugh. I feel revolting. We've just had out last family get-together of the season. There's one unopened tub of chicks left (it's staying unopened - I'm saving them for DD's party bags) an open tin of shortbread which I'm going to keep for a treat on non-fast days (NFDs) and a couple of unappealing selection box bars. All the nice wine and the Baileys is finished, so I'm good to go but looking horrendous.

I've just taken some before pics. I can't believe I've been going around looking as I do for so long. I've been alternating between a shapeless jumper dress and a boring Joules smock dress with leggings for ages. I wear them everywhere, including work. Under the jumper dress you can see the apron of flab around my middle. There's a ledge of fat on my hips. The smock dress makes me look pregnant. We moved in December and of the removal men made a pregnancy-related comment. I'm pretty sure he thought I was PG (DS is 14mo now).

In our new house there's a wall at the end of the landing tastefully mirror tiled. I'm not going to take them down until I've lost the weight as they're a constant reminder of what I actually look like, as opposed to what I think I'm getting away with.

I know this all sounds very superficial and self-loathing, but actually my very healthy and slim mum was diagnosed with an aggressive tumour this autumn, and it's brought home to me te need to be healthy if only to stand a chance of surviving, if not preventing such diseases. I owe it to her to sort myself out.

So, first proper fast day tomorrow, followed by TDEE from Friday - Sunday, and another fast on Monday. After that I'll start to relax a bit on Saturdays but for now I need to Get On With It.

MotherGirth Wed 01-Jan-14 20:51:42

Chocs, not chicks grin

emmief77 Wed 01-Jan-14 21:09:10

Okay weigh in completed, 13stone 6lb and I'm 5ft 3in blush

TalkinPeace Wed 01-Jan-14 21:20:34

And this time next year you'll be lean and mean.

Somebody asked for a TDEE calculator .....

LittleBonnie Wed 01-Jan-14 21:26:34

I'm joining you! Had my first day today and am so craving stodgy or sweet food! Have been really good though, if only every day could be like this.
Am totally giving up alcohol for the month of Jan, plus trying to stay as close to 1000 cals per day as my willpower can stand! I'm 5'7 and think about 13 and a half stone but too scared to weigh myself yet as will make me depressed! Will weigh Monday.

emmief77 Wed 01-Jan-14 21:33:51

talkinpeace more flowers - do you recommend the 5:2? - i love my carbs, not sure I can follow it - just worked out my TDEE shock shock

TalkinPeace Wed 01-Jan-14 21:37:34

I love 5:2
I love carbs
it does not suit all people but I love it
there are lots of TDEE calculators - I just knew where that one was!

emmief77 Wed 01-Jan-14 21:46:47

talkinpeace - by coincidence I had googled TDEE calculator and it brought up that website smile

DearPrudence Wed 01-Jan-14 21:53:46

Thanks to this thread I've already tackled the scales and faced the full horror (1.5 stone added in last 3 months of last year, making me more than 4 stone overweight sad) rather than waiting until next Monday.

But I've already started cutting back, and have re-signed up to MFP. If anyone wants to be my friend I'm MsDearPrudence. Not really sure how all that works yet but I'll figure it out.

Got dragged to pub against my will managed to stick to 2 glasses, but succumbed to chocolate. However, my good eating habits during the day mean I'm only 120 odd calories over for the day. Which I'm quite pleased about!

I ate the last of my Christmas liquor chocolates today, the Christmas cake was finished, all the snacky bits from Christmas are now eaten or frozen and the last bottle of Baileys is hidden away.

I've planned a month of meals, I've also.got two A4 pages of healthy lunch ideas for when I return to work next week. I've cleared out my sewing box so I can sit and needle of an evening, I've also made a start on important paperwork.

I also gave up wearing my maternity pyjamas this evening as they are too tight. Embarrassing. mothergirth I discovered that same slab around my middle today, in the space of a.year I've gone from a size 10 to a size 16/18. And it sucks.

Erm.....tmi...but..... is anyone else who has been healthy eating for a good few days pooping more?

candylicious Wed 01-Jan-14 23:19:21

I've only joined on here today but I'm eager to be 'encouraged' by you all. I've been really stressed lately and can see the weight loss starting already so really want to make the most out of a bad thing. My main aim is to cut down my alcohol intake and drink more water, I can go some days with 1 drink at work all day, not good for me!

I'm on MFP as Proudpeace, feel free to add me grin

Twirlbitesruinedmylife Thu 02-Jan-14 00:01:36

Hi, I'd like to join.
Weighed myself this morning at 13s4 and 52 pounds would be a good target.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 02-Jan-14 00:43:15

KenAdams, I like to think of it as all the christmas crap finally being pushed out grin

Aim for tomorrow is to drink as much water as I can. Noticed today that the only fluid I had all day was 3 cups of tea and a glass of diet cork with my dinner.

Diet cork sounds pretty awful, I must say!

Been up since 5.20. Made soup. Not managed to not have breakfast, but I did limit myself to 2 boiled eggs, no toast, so a good healthy start to the day.

Beechview Thu 02-Jan-14 08:17:23

I'm starting today. I'm using mfp and am aiming for around 1350 calories a day. I've looked at my TDEE and I think that's a good start for me. I'm allowing one meal a week where I can 'eat what I want' ie eating out or a take away but still making good choices.

I'm really fed up of being fat and unhealthy and the restrictions (mostly mental but also due to a lack of energy) that it puts on my life. It affects everything - my confidence, my moods, my relationships, my social life and my general enjoyment of life.

I'm really looking forward to sorting all this out. I'm going to be really busy from next week so I'm hoping that will help too as I'll have less time to snack and will have to be more organised with meals.

I'm going to meal plan today then go and shop for the week.

MotherGirth Thu 02-Jan-14 08:38:43

Fasting today. Just drunk two mugs of hot water and lemon and feeling pretty determined so far ... but it's only just after 8:30!

I'm having egg on toast and a couple of clementines for tea. I seem to remember Michael Moseley suggesting no carby stuff on fast days but I feel like I'll need the energy for spinning later.

CecyHall Thu 02-Jan-14 09:19:45

Day 1 and feeling positive! Although my breakfast avocado was not ripe enough which was annoying (especially as it was only 10p for quick sale yesterday so I thought it would be the other way)

Salt beef salad for lunch and roast chicken for tea, looking forward to it.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 02-Jan-14 09:39:07

Diet cork?! Diet coke!! grin

I've only just woken! Dd stayed with grandparents last night and I ended up until almost 2am watching lots of catch up tv!

Just going to have something to drink then heading out for run/brisk walk then home to do some squats etc

DearPrudence Thu 02-Jan-14 09:54:55

Having lunch at my sister's today but she will do something healthy. Need to think of a healthy tea. Maybe spaghetti bolognese packed with veg.

Loads of water is a good idea. Going to have a pint right now.

DearPrudence Thu 02-Jan-14 09:55:33

Having lunch at my sister's today but she will do something healthy. Need to think of a healthy tea. Maybe spaghetti bolognese packed with veg.

Loads of water is a good idea. Going to have a pint right now.

Tiredness is a major factor. I drank too much black coffee yesterday with the fairly predictable result I was awake until 2am.

Gave me plenty of time to analyse my fakebook and see it filled with people's high expectations for 2014 and their round ups of 2013 - putting this weight on was easy, getting rid of it is going to be a long hard slog I suspect.

So, any tips to brighten mood and cope with tiredness while changing comfort eating habits of the last year would be much appreciated.

bobblypop Thu 02-Jan-14 10:02:55

ended up being a bad day yesterday. Did manage to run, but then ate loads as had New Years Day dinner with pudding and wine and sort of went downhill from there...
BUT starting properly today. Feeling good that I at least seem to have got myself motivated to exercise again but I REALLY need to get a grip on my eating now.
Weetabix and half a banana for brekkie, now not eating again till lunch.

emmief77 Thu 02-Jan-14 10:25:02

Been over to join the lovely people on the 5:2 thread, having shocked myself with my weigh in yesterday, am keen to get started... Very embarrassed to share with you have hardly any veggies in the house blush blush.... I have really let things go, need to get myself food shopping but DD still in bed (pre-teen)!

MotherGirth Thu 02-Jan-14 11:32:49

I'm finding the fast tedious today, and I'm cold. But I prefer the idea of eating normally on the other days than limiting myself every single day. I have family movie and pizza night planned for Saturday, and a roast beef dinner on Sunday -all MFPd of course!

HugAndRoll Thu 02-Jan-14 11:33:35

I've had a pretty good start it the day, need to up my water too. I drink around 4/5 glasses a day at the moment but need to get it to 8.

I'm going to make dinner in a mo so it only has to be chucked in the oven later, it's the fish pie from the change 4 life app. I've also bought the hairy dieters cookbook to help with next week's meal planning.

I'm off to ikea tomorrow and I've just looked up the calories for their meatballs. Not as bad as I thought, and walking round ikea for 2 hours has to count for something i guess...

hug upping my water consumption has done wonders for my skin and for my late afternoon bloaty feeling. Am quietly very impressed, but I do feel this is something I should have discovered before the age of 35!

hopebeyondreason Thu 02-Jan-14 12:24:24

I'm in. I'm the wrong side of 50, 5ft 5ins and the scales this morning tell me I'm 13st 7lbs. I've put that half a stone on over December.

I have yo-yoed for years and this year I have to crack it. I'm going no alcohol / low carb / lots of water for January and take it from there. I feel that slowly and steadily is the way to go.

Good luck everyone.

Woohoo! Lovely 1 hour walk with the kidlets and DH up to the country park. Properly blew away the cobwebs in time for tonight's girly drinks. And 300 calories towards my red wine and nibbles :-)

Has anyone else been taking advantage of the good weather? Assuming it is good near you, that is...

TalkinPeace Thu 02-Jan-14 16:11:12

the 8 glasses of water a day thing is a myth linked to mis reading of an old medical paper : if eating a normal healthy diet, at least 4 of the glasses are included in your food.
( my posts usually include a but )
if you are restricting intake - fasting, staying within TDEE, changing your pattern
it is very very easy to become dehydrated - many teenagers permanently are
so drinking at least two pints of water a day is a good move
try to cut down on ALL fizzy drinks - especially diet ones as they actually make you gain weight

In my house we treat fizzy drinks the same as alcohol - so only with meals or special occasions
and 48 weeks a year no alcohol or fizzy is consumed during the week ...

Too right. Went out and caught some sunshine.

candylicious Thu 02-Jan-14 16:21:43

I'm thirsty, I won't drink the water at work so decided to try a Red Bush Spiced Tea! I can honestly say never again! It tastes like dish water after washing the plates after a curry and hits the back of your throat like the eggy farts do the day after! Sorry for the description but its horrid! sad

On a good note I'm resisting the big tub of Celebrations well so far!

Dont know if this wilk help anyone but I baked four chicken breasts in balsamic vinegar in the oven and once cool stuck them in the fridge. Over the last few days Ive had them in a salad, in a wholemeal wrap etc, just reallyeasy to grab one and useit towards a quick lunch. Tasty too.

HugAndRoll Thu 02-Jan-14 16:34:34

talkin I'm not fasting I'm doing regular calorie counting but I do find I'm more thirsty. I went off fizzy drinks over a month ago and am not a massive fan of squash so I only really drink coffee and water.

myname I had chicken for dinner last night but cooked two breasts so I had chicken salad for lunch, it's a great idea.

Are you all eating the extra cals freed up from exercise? I've had dinner but according to mfp I still have over 700 cals to eat!!! My daily limit is 1500 but it added on another few hundred after the exercise!

Im not but my excercise consists of two zumba classes per week so not much tbh. Plus anything extra I burn off is a bonus.

TalkinPeace Thu 02-Jan-14 17:57:54

NEVER add back exercise calories.
as the counters for exercise were not looking over your shoulder.
exercise acts as an appetite suppressant.
Take advantage of that.

On a fast day I am regularly at -500 calories intake if I counted my exercise.
So I don't

1500 is a very low TDEE - are you petite?

justonemorecake Thu 02-Jan-14 18:16:52

I'm trying very hard not to add back the exercise calories, as I think this is the mistake I made last time I used mfp. Not that I've actually managed to do much exercise so far, but once I do I'll be treating those calories as a bonus, not to be used up.

My TDEE seems very high (2200), but I suppose it must be because I'm very overweight at the moment and quite tall?

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 02-Jan-14 18:19:11

Talkpeace, I wasn't planning to use them up anyway, but was curious about others!
No I'm far from petite grin. The 1500 was set by mfp when I details in

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 02-Jan-14 18:21:44

Going by online, my tdee is 2189 a day. I'm not doing 5:2 though, prefer just low cal/no junk

TalkinPeace Thu 02-Jan-14 18:32:49

Mummyduck ... sorry, yes, posting on two types of thread at once!
1500 if that is every day makes more sense.

2200 for a TDEE is perfectly sane ... its the amount of calories you need to stay where you are
so if you are using MFP alone, you let it calculate.
If you are using MFP and fasting, the fasts create the deficit.

Not doing to well. I'm ok till the evening and then because I'm not a work till Monday I nibble. Originally I would start on 6th cos my birthday will be over and I'll be back at work. Have done lots of cycling

TalkinPeace Thu 02-Jan-14 18:50:55

keep nibbling till you've eaten what is in the house then do not buy any more snack foods
what do you DO in the evening?
change your routine so that the mental triggers are not set off.
and if needs be, brush your teeth with REALLY minty toothpaste right after supper as all food will taste foul for an hour!

justonemorecake Thu 02-Jan-14 18:56:59

I guess seeing that at the moment I could 2200 calories and maintain weight, it makes me wonder how much I was eating to put on all this weight?!

I'm just using mfp for now and that gives me 1820 calories a day if I want to lose 1lb a week. I'm sticking with mfp now and trying to make healthy changes (cutting out fizzy drinks, unnecessary snacking and huge portions) and then I'm going to think about starting 5:2.

talking as I have a low calorie intake, I am hungry quite a bit, but doing the water drinking etx...will this adjust as I become used to eating less?

TalkinPeace Thu 02-Jan-14 19:14:51

If you teach your system to expect two or three decent meals a day and nothing at all outside of those times it will adapt within a couple of weeks.

90% of hunger is in your head not your tummy.

And - as we have discovered doing fasting - hunger comes in waves and they pass. I can be UTTERLY ravenous. Have a glass of water and a cup of tea and its gone and I then do not eat for another six or seven hours.

If you get into the habit of drinking a glass of water each time you'd have otherwise reached for a snack, your system will learn to use the calories stored on your hips rather than asking for new ones.

Real hunger is interesting - and does not kick in until at least 24 hours after the last batch of food. When you do eat after waiting that long you notice flavours much more.

I have approximately three hours until bedtime. If and it's a big if I get through those three hours without finding something sugary I will have managed my first sugar free day in about nine months.

I find if I can break the sugar addiction then I feel more alert and can concentrate better. I even went to co-op and to Aldi today in my quest for dinner and avoided the sweeties.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 02-Jan-14 20:44:53

Stay strong welly grin

I failed. Three little

Pfaffernasse biscuits needed eating up. But I haven't gone over my daily calorie limit even with them.

MotherGirth Thu 02-Jan-14 21:20:38

I've just tracked for tomorrow and can't believe how much food 1500 cals actually is. Am I doing something wrong?!!

Applesnotcakes Thu 02-Jan-14 21:31:47

Last day today of mindless eating. Back on MFP tomorrow after a good 2 weeks of indulgence. Some of it was fun but I'm actually looking forward to getting a bit of control back and feeling less bloated and sluggish.

Somewhat dreading the morning weigh in though but I need to know what I'm dealing with!

And bigwellylittlewelly well done at keeping within your limit. It's easy to go a bit mad once you eat something you didnt want to and then eat loads. But controlling the slip ups is a big part of success I think.

MummyDuckAndDuckling Thu 02-Jan-14 21:36:36

I've made a conscious effort to drink more water than I do any average day and the difference is amazing! I was feeling so bloated and horrible yesterday and even this morning. But now I feel so much better.

I've been watching a lot of inspirational videos on YouTube of woman who have lost 4+ stones. Making me feel confident that I can do it grin

TalkinPeace Thu 02-Jan-14 21:36:57

make sure you actually weigh things
and yes, if you have lots of veg and lean protein you will physically struggle to eat 1500 calories

on a fast day I have my 500 as vegetables - usually in soup - and I can barely finish it !
