Half a stone by Halloween, anyone?!

(206 Posts)
MegBusset Sun 25-Aug-13 16:06:49

I have been trying and failing to lose half a stone since Christmas, the failure is mainly due to my enduring of wine and chocolate but I just feel a bit out of my comfortable zone and would fit my clothes better if I managed to shift it!

I am 9st 6lb and would like to be 9st. I'm only 5ft 3in so really feel that extra half zone.

I am going to start using MFP every day (always used to but have had the summer off to enjoy ice creams and BBQs and chilled wine), once the DC are back at school I am going to start running again 2 or 3x a week (have not found time to over the hols esp as I have started working three days a week). I feel that half a stone two months ought to be really achievable but I really need to stick with it and not go "Oh fuckit" and fall off the wagon too often

Anyone with a similar amount to lose like to join me for mutual support?

ImATotJeSuisUneTot Sun 25-Aug-13 19:55:12

I will - I have about 8lbs to lose.

I use MFP every day, but have hit a bit of a plateau.

Ive signed up for the MN low-carb bootcamp that starts in Sept, and hope to lose it quite quickly - but would be happy to have it gone by Halloween. smile

MegBusset Sun 25-Aug-13 21:18:30

Ooh hello smile I'm intrigued by the low-carb bootcamp but think it would be too hard to fit in with our dietary requirements (DH and I are veggie, DS1 is allergic to eggs, nuts and pulses). Also, giving up pasta, sod that!

MegBusset Fri 30-Aug-13 08:29:06

How's it going ImATot? I have been eating ok this week but really feel that I need to be exercising!

CunfuddledAlways Fri 30-Aug-13 08:36:26

I'm in!! Would like to loose just over a stone in total but would be happy with half a stone by hallowed, I am watching what I eat and cutting out fizzy drinks! and cycle 6 miles a day so it should all be helping smile

ImATotJeSuisUneTot Fri 30-Aug-13 10:46:36

Well, I've started low carbing already, I didn't want to wait until bootcamp started.

So, Sunday-Friday, I've gone from 154.5lbs, to 148.1lbs! gringringringringringringringringringringringrin

My goal weight is 145 so I'm ver pleased!!

MegBusset Fri 30-Aug-13 11:29:05

shock that's incredible!

ImATotJeSuisUneTot Fri 30-Aug-13 11:40:46

I know. I've lost 1.5inches off my waist too. grin

MegBusset Fri 30-Aug-13 11:53:18

That's amazing! What kind of thing are you eating?

ImATotJeSuisUneTot Fri 30-Aug-13 12:09:33

Yogurt, nuts and fruit for breakfast, or eggs and mushrooms, spring onion sausage or bacon.

Lunch - yesterday I had a BBQ chicken and mushroom melt. Cooked chicken, topped with BBQ sauce, fried mushrooms and cheese. Was amazing and I wasn't hungry for hours. I've had omelette or stuffed mushrooms.

In fact I haven't been hungry once this week.

Evening meals, we've made and eaten as a family - piri piri pork steaks, chicken kebabs, steak, chicken wings and jerk beef etc.

I've had one piece of 85% choc after lunch and tea if I've fancied it, as 'dessert'

And that's it - no urge to snack at all.

One evening I fancied toast, but just distracted myself and it hasn't happened again.

I'm impressed, I really am. grin

NotHerRealName Sat 31-Aug-13 22:04:19

OP I would love to join you with this. I have just posted tonight about the Paul McKenna hypno gastric band. Similar to you, I am 5,2 and currently 9 stone 5 pounds. I would like to get comfortably below 9 stone (say 8,12 ish) so I can feel a bit less sluggish and lose some flab.
I am re in stalling my hypnotic band tonight so hopefully that will help.
Right now I am struggling with lack of motivation to exercise and boredom in the evenings causing me to gorge on chocolate. I am hoping that when my DD goes back to school next week that will help to bring a little structure back to my eating habits.

MegBusset Sat 31-Aug-13 22:16:14

Hiya smile Have you done the hypno band before, what does it entail and does it work?

I have not been too bad this week foodwise and have been for a couple of longish walks but don't expect to see any movement on the scales til I can get my running gear back on.

Anthracite Sat 31-Aug-13 22:17:17

I'm in smile

ParkerTheThief Sat 31-Aug-13 22:19:01

I'd like to do this.

I'm back to work on Monday so my eating habits should improve.
I've lost half a stone so far but seem to plateau so I need to make a rel effort to lose the next half a stone.

tillyann2013 Sat 31-Aug-13 22:19:11

I'm in too. A stone ideally but gotta start somewhere!

Bramblesinforrin Sat 31-Aug-13 22:29:39

Do consider the 5:2 (thread welcomes allcomers). Lost 2 stone between jan and July, kept it off. Was going into a 16 last Christmas, today am a 10-12 :D

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sat 31-Aug-13 22:51:29

< Tentatively raises hand >
Can I join? I'm embarrassed because I've joined these sorts of threads before but never seem to perservere to the bitter end.
I'm 10st 6oz at 5'7'm,but would like to be just under 10st. Tbh, I've always felt my 'best' weight is 9st 4lb, but I've been losing and re-gaining the same three pounds for so long now it would be a major achievement to get to 10st.

Been doing mfp, but as I'm old (50) and had my gallbladder out recently, and I also have an evening wine-and ice cream habit, it's just not shifting.

I'm curious about the hypno gastric band - does it work?

MegBusset Sun 01-Sep-13 08:56:47

Hi everyone smile

Well as expected, the scales are still at 9st 6 this morning - but I feel more 'in the zone' and already less bloated from having had fewer snacks & less booze this week.

My target for next Sunday is 9st 5lb, let's do this!

RatherBeOnThePiste Sun 01-Sep-13 09:01:28

With you, although a stone would be nice. Am now running again as it's our turn to do the WCC run - in October, so that is good.

Have tried BIWI's low carbing and it doesn't work here. DD is a serious rower and has to carb load, and I'm shite at cooking low carb meals, I was just not having the carbs.

So yes, on board

mabeg3 Sun 01-Sep-13 09:10:32

Hiya, I'll join ya! I've gone from an 8 to a 12 in 18 months - perimenopause...(!) and wine, and crisps, really, and want to be able to get back into my jeans by xmas.....Going to do more walking i think....just need to get off me arse and actually do it. Have been a member of a gym in the past but resent spending £75 a month when I just need to eat less and move more! I have to say tho that once I hit 45 (48 now) my body kind of became a stranger to me....I know that sounds mad, but most days I feel like I'm walking through treacle....plus working full time, two kids, sole earner etc etc.....am also going self employed so will potentially have NO MONEY so need to be able to wear the clothes i have....!

My goal this week is to bring in a packed lunch every day - and NO CRISPS!!

maeve x

MegBusset Sun 01-Sep-13 09:22:20

Hi Pistey and Maeve smile

I've recently started working three days a week so s

MegBusset Sun 01-Sep-13 09:23:53

Stupid iPhone

...so I am spending more time than before at a desk/in the car. When the kids go back to school I'll have two 'free' days so going to run then, or go to the gym if it's too cold/wet.

yegodsandlittlefishes Sun 01-Sep-13 09:27:18

Tes, I'll join in. It would be great to lose half a stone ( or a stone) and I have to eat so little to do so, I really need some encouragement.

I signed up on the low carb thread but have given in to half a bagel for breakfast and had pasta for dinner last night. Carbs are cheap and convenient options here. I need to rethink what I use as staples and buy more meat.

mrsfiddymont Sun 01-Sep-13 09:37:35

Can I join? I have at least 2 stone to lose (12 stone exactly today sad).

ImATot your weight loss has inspired me!

maeve I know the walking through treacle feeling all too well. Your life sounds very much like mine.

yegodsandlittlefishes Sun 01-Sep-13 09:45:53

Hi pistey <waves> Dd here is a serious rower, and she does need extra carbs sometimes too. She should eat more than she does and I am finding it's hard to lose weight while trying to feed up the skinny, fit teens!

Well done on doing the run. I've never done an official race/marathon. It sounds daunting, but I am now think I need to start thinking about it to get enough exercise.

LadyBarlow Sun 01-Sep-13 09:59:17

I'm in! I'm weighing in at 11st 2lb & I'm 5ft 4, it's the heaviest I've ever been so I need to do something, I think I'll do well with a target of half a stone by Halloween.
I'm not sure on how I'm going to fit in exercise as I'm starting a new job etc etc but I'll try my best

Judyandherdreamofhorses Sun 01-Sep-13 09:59:55

I'll join. I've never deliberately attempted weight loss before. But two DC and two (ish) stone later, I need to. I'm not overweight, but can see myself just quietly putting on half a stone a year forever unless I act now. 10 stone, would like to be 9 ish.

I started running 3x a week (c25k) in June and feel a lot healthier and look more toned. Haven't lost any weight at all though. DH has and looks amazing! He's fitting into clothes two sizes smaller!

I'm not going to low carb, I don't think. Still breastfeeding and don't want to do anything radical! I'm going back to work this week and may have a bit of time to add a swim each week on the way home. I plan to cut down on the wine (a lot) and take a small packed lunch to work.

I'll sign up to MFP and have a look.

Rowlers Sun 01-Sep-13 10:09:21

(what's MFP?)
Thinking of joining you. But that will mean admitting my weight and committing to do something about it! I know I can def not do without carbs, no way, but can eat less and move more.
Ok, deep breath...
I am 11 stone 7, always maintained weight below 10 stone till children arrived so need to lose stone and a half ideally. I'm 42 and could find the time to go to gym etc.
Need a push!!

FloraFoxley Sun 01-Sep-13 10:24:15

Ill join you! I'm 9 stone 13 and 5 ft 4, comfortable size 10.

So, not overweight but feel my best at 9 stone 7. Any lower and I look a bit gaunt so 6lbs would be perfect. I'm not looking to drop dress sizes or anything but would love to break my terrible weekend over indulgence. Anyone else suffer from this? I'm strict all week and then go mad at weekends. Sigh!

Been good this weekend though! Yesterday I ate ...

Peppermint tea
Protein bar

Goats cheese salad
Slice of melon

Edamame bean and glass noodle salad
Bowl of cherry frozen yogurt

And so far today I've had 2 weetabix with blueberries and soya yogurt.

What plan are you guys following?

I'd like to be 9 stone 11 by next weekend

mabeg3 Sun 01-Sep-13 11:55:00

OK. Have made a pot full of carrot soup and have put my trainers in the car....will take a lunch break and walk round the block for starters.....NOT going to weigh myself! Will use the waistband test...

MegBusset Sun 01-Sep-13 12:20:30

I would also recommend C25k. I did it a year ago and apart from the odd break (like over the summer hols!) have found it reasonably easy to keep up - and I managed the Bupa 10k in May.

I am not following any particular

MegBusset Sun 01-Sep-13 12:22:05

...plan, just sticking to 1400 cals a day (any less and I feel miserable) and from next week running 2/3x week. Plus trying to avoid booze and chocolate, my two vices!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sun 01-Sep-13 14:18:48

I'm following a pretty similar method to you Meg - 1500 1400 cals a day logged on mfp. I was on the eat more, weigh less thread for a while and there were a lot of big fans there, but that plan hinges on doing a lot of exercise, which I'm not really up to doing atm.

My downfall is mini magnums and wine; if I can go even a couple of days without succumbing by the late evening, I'm pretty much guaranteed to lose 20"g or so. I just don't sustain it long enough to make a significant difference.

Looking at what I've just written makes me realise what a numpty I am carrying on with destructive behaviours. Please agree with me and tell me to Change!

NotHerRealName Sun 01-Sep-13 20:16:19

Hi MegBusset, yes I "installed" my hyponoband in around Feb this year and did really well with it. You do have to read the book and religiously keep on following the golden rules and the weight falls off. The thing was that I fell off the wagon for a few months due to some personal problems and have struggled a bit since. I have to admit that I feel full so much quicker after doing the hypnosis but I am able to eat past it iyswim?
I did the hypnosis last night and I already feel a bit more in control of my appetite.
The problem with me is I hate exercise so I have the body I deserve really!

cloudskitchen Sun 01-Sep-13 20:28:26

I'd like to join please. I've just got back from America and have gained 5/6 lbs. I kind of expected it but kids go back to school this week so time to knuckle down. MFP is my weapon of choice grin

cloudskitchen Sun 01-Sep-13 20:36:25

was I supposed to add weight etc? have gone from 8 stone 7lb to 8 stone 12ish. I'm 5'2" (on a good day wink ) Ideally I'd like to get to 8stone 5ish but I know I'm not in the "zone" I need one of those motivational diet inspiring moments.

Judyandherdreamofhorses Sun 01-Sep-13 21:19:15

Well, that was my first ever day of calorie counting. Interesting. I've definitely been eating too much. Today I had enough calories 'left' to have two small glasses of wine, but that was because I'd run today. On a rest day I wouldn't have had that. And definitely never pudding AND wine!

I've never really had to think about my weight before - well, I've often been very underweight actually. As I said, I'm finding it 'interesting'. No more kids' leftovers!

I wonder how many calories a breastfeed uses up. I might encourage DS more! He's 14 months and doesn't have a lot now really.

yegodsandlittlefishes Sun 01-Sep-13 21:48:06

Today I've had:
Large glass of cold water (and thyroxine)

breakfast(9am ish): half a bagel & home-made jam with a big mug of milky coffee

Lunch(2pm): slice of veg & goats cheese quiche
Mug of tea

Mug of tea, glass of water & pint of orange juice (with iron tablet)

Dinner (7pm): small bowl of boiled rice with small amount of chicken in a home-made roasted veggie sauce. Small bowl of fruity yoghurt. Mug of tea.

Will just have water now.

Went for a short walk & did some housework but not really had enough exercise today.

MizK Sun 01-Sep-13 21:53:07

Ooh, can I join? I did 5:2 for a few weeks earlier in the year but, for me, it was so difficult to do and I became too obsessive about food - was literally all I thought of!

After 3 months of utter truck driver eating, I weighed in last Weds at 11st 8. At 5 7 that's definitely overweight. Being an apple it means that I now have a solid ring of fat around my middle - sexy!

Using MFP and trying to be sensible and not use cals on empty foods, and am kicking wine out of my life til I've lost at least half a stone.

Finding it OK so far but we shall see.

I'd like to be back in the low 10s, its the weight I look well at, anything more and my waist starts to disappear leaving me looking potatoish.

judy I know what you mean about leftovers, they're LETHAL! The amount of toast etc that I automatically clear away into my face is pretty amazing. No more!

MegBusset Sun 01-Sep-13 21:59:48

Well I took the kids for a walk round the park today, I also made cakes with DS2 and managed not to eat any, or lick the bowl! I have eaten Oatibix for breakfast, tuna sandwich for lunch, baked potato with beans & salad for dinner, plum for snack.

mrsfiddymont Mon 02-Sep-13 04:35:44

grin at truck driver eating.

I start in earnest today...sigh!

GaryBuseysTeeth Mon 02-Sep-13 06:30:35

Can I join in too?
Had DS2 on 30th July, i'm 5'4 & currently weigh 136lbs, pre.pg weight was 122 (will convert to stones when not on phone), would like to be around 115-120 however I'm feeling unfit & flabby so wouldnt mind being heavier, providing its muscle mass!
Using mfp & trying to cut out as much processed sugar/junk as possible.

Meg, very impressed that you resisted licking the bowl....thats the best part!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 02-Sep-13 06:54:16

Here we go then!

mabeg3 Mon 02-Sep-13 07:01:37

Had chips AND noodles for tea yesterday! AAAAgh. now it starts.....and going to try and keep off the wine...have the soup in the fridge and the trainers in the car.....good luck all! x

MyNameIsSuz Mon 02-Sep-13 07:16:35

Can I join? I need to lose the half a stone I've gained since cutting down on breastfeeding (which was amazing for keeping my weight down, but got me into the habit of snacking all day long). I'm 5'2" and small boned, currently 9 stone 3 and wanting to get back to about 8 st 10 before I go back to work at the end of October. My best weight was 8 st 4, but I think those days are past.

Not really entirely sure how I'm going to do it, I'm going back to belly dancing next week and am trying to stop snacking, but I also think smaller portions are needed! I've been eating lots of bread too while on maternity leave, I never really ate much before as we don't have toasters in my office and I'm not a huge sandwich fan, but being at home I can have toast every day if I want...

Imflabulous Mon 02-Sep-13 07:46:17

Ooh can I join too?

I started on saturday as its 7 weeks untl s night out so hope too lose a stone best case or 7lb worst case by then. I'm following sw, as I lost 1.5 stone this year but managed to gain 6lb over the hols (eek) as didn't follow it at all.

Im starting at 12st 11lb and I'm 5ft 6, I hope to
eventually get to 11st to be in healthy bmi range.

Judyandherdreamofhorses Mon 02-Sep-13 17:43:51

I've mostly managed to avoid children's leftovers today, although DS's pork casserole is sitting here in front of me and is so delicious.

I've definitely been eating too much. No spare calories leftover for wine tonight. Previously I wouldn't have thought twice about that, so it'll do me good one way or another!

MegBusset Mon 02-Sep-13 18:34:30

I'm capable of being good all day then destroying all my good work in the evening, as a glass of wine leads to another and then I hit the chocolate!

If I could give up wine altogether I would be dead skinny. But life would be pretty dull smile

MyNameIsSuz Mon 02-Sep-13 19:10:07

Meg, I often think that about butter and cheese, if those didn't exist I'd be half the size.

My problem is that I try to be good so don't buy biscuits, then mid afternoon I get so hungry I eat half a packet of ham.

GaryBuseysTeeth Mon 02-Sep-13 19:11:46

Meg, I don't eat after 7pm (8 if it's the weekend)..which blows most of my snacking/downfalls out the window!

Suz, could you eat off one of your DC's plates if portion sizes are your vice? Belly dancing sounds really interesting!

Are we going to have a 'group' weigh-in/measurements day?

Haven't eaten too much today (although there may be 3 less biscuits in the jar!), up bright & early with DS1 in the park today, 8am & we were waving good morning to the slugs!

MizK Mon 02-Sep-13 21:10:34

gary that sounds like an idea I could steal, having a cut off point, would stop the temptation to nibble salty crunchy things whilst on the sofa!

Would be nice to have a weigh in day I think, any consensus as to when? I'd prefer a weekday I think but no huge pref, will be weighing on weds just for my own reassurance that this is working! Had a good swim this eve and a long walk so hopeful of a pound or 2 coming off.

LadyBarlow Mon 02-Sep-13 21:28:17

grin I did well today!! Loads of delicious home made cakes in the staff room & I didn't have any!!!!! I sat there with my satsuma & felt pretty smug!
I also made sure I had a small tub of grapes to eat in the car on the way home from work- that's my worst time of day for wanting to snack & that seemed to help ease the biscuit/bread/cake/ anything bad craving!
I'm happy to have a weigh in day, preferably in the week but not bothered when.
Hope everyone has a good day tomorrow

mabeg3 Mon 02-Sep-13 22:45:33

Weekday for weigh-in is good for me too. Did ok today - had a lunch out - went for the veg panini and salad (no chips, boo!) and no pud. Home made sausage and mash for tea - small portion.....and NO CRISPS!!!! Like the idea of grapes in the car.....

MegBusset Tue 03-Sep-13 18:27:34

Ok how about Weigh-In Wednesday?!

CharlotteBr0nteSaurus Tue 03-Sep-13 18:53:29

me, me, me, I need this.
the nurse informed me that i have put on 5kg since my last review for the mini-pill

I attribute this to a) no exercise due to a bad run of injuries and illnesses
and b) eating like A Beast

I started eating a bit more normally today, and when i've shaken off this bout of manflu I might have to start swimming. I hate swimming, but my knee and ankle are still a little too creaky for starting running again.

am 5'9" and 11st11. technically I have a healthy BMI (just), but have a small frame, and so 10 stone is a really good weight for me. Interim goal is 11st.

GaryBuseysTeeth Wed 04-Sep-13 08:03:31

Meg: could we change it to Thurs, late weigh in friday, just incase people havent been on since u posted?
I'm also doing bust, waist, hip measurements to see where its (hopefully) dropping off, if anyone fancies joining in on that.

I was very good yesterday, third day of shred & im not dead...hurray!
What exercise are other people doing?

Hope all goes well for everyone today!

MyNameIsSuz Wed 04-Sep-13 09:09:25

Good call Gary, I already weighed myself this morning and have lost nothing so this gives me another day!!!

I'm off to Buggyfit today, and yesterday did an hour and a half country walk with my 20lb 11-month-old in the sling on my back (though cancelled out by the cream tea we walked there for...) so am feeling hopeful!

Madmog Wed 04-Sep-13 14:10:31

Can I join? Put on half a stone in the spring/earlier summer and managed to loose a couple of pounds during the summer holidays, so 4/5lbs to go. Now things are back to normal, feel I can concentrate a bit more on what I eat.

My jeans I wear in the winter are too tight, so need to be able to wear them soon.

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 04-Sep-13 21:41:10

Joining! I am 10 stone 1 as of last Friday, 9 stone 7 would mean fitting in clothes again and 9 stone would be the ideal. Was 10 stone 7 so have managed to slo-o-o-o-o-wly lose half a stone this year but I want to ramp it up a bit now so half a stone by Halloween would be perfect. And then another few pounds by December (going on holidays in December but also just want to lose weight for general life and stop being a glutton).

Friday's my weighday (as that's the day I should theoretically be lightest...) I'm pretty good during the week mostly, bring my breakfast and lunch to work and have a healthy dinner. Downfall is weekend when I invariably have loads of beer, takeaway, chips, crisps etc. Trying to eat well Sunday to Friday afternoon at the moment, with time off for good behaviour Friday nights and Saturdays. Also trying to walk in and out to work (5km each way) most every day.

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 04-Sep-13 21:43:30

Small tub of grapes is my choice of afternoon snack too Mabeg and LadyBarlow - stops me going for the crisps option. Also have discovered new Sour Cream and Onion Tuc crackers - 18 calories each and nice enough to feel indulgent (as long as you stick to 2 or 3 though...)

LadyBarlow Wed 04-Sep-13 22:55:04

Right, should we say we won't weigh in this week coz we've only just started? So, weigh in will be Thurs 12th or by Fri 13th- whatever's easier for each of us?
I'm still doing ok but haven't done any exercise, I just cannot fit it in this week, portion control is ok & my afternoon snack of grapes is definitely the way forward! No munchies having that & a bottle of water

MegBusset Thu 05-Sep-13 07:26:44

Morning everyone! Welcome newbies!

I'm 9st 4.5lb today so that's a great start smile

MizK Thu 05-Sep-13 07:45:32

Well done Meg that's a fab start!
Weighed in (yesterday actually!) And I'm at 11st 5, so 3 pounds off! Really pleased as now I'm (just) back in the healthy weight range for my height.
My Fitness Pal is great smile
nugget those snack crackers sound nice, may have to try.
My saviour is slices of melon in the afternoon, and my treat if I feel I need something indulgent has been a solero, only 89 cals and I love them!

Let's keep this up, can't wait to actually feel slimmer and not to be cut in half by all my waistbands!

Rowlers Thu 05-Sep-13 22:57:32

Just checking in!
Started properly on Tuesday so not going to weigh till next week.
Worked out what MFP means and have been using it for last 3 days.
I've been completing all I eat etc and it does help to stop me being too tempted by all the sweet stuff I would usually snack on. Have also done a few hours of digging and been to the gym for 40 minutes tonight so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it pays off. I don't want to get disillusioned and give up ...

GaryBuseysTeeth Fri 06-Sep-13 05:01:34

1lb down here. Well done Meg & Mis!

What's everyone got planned for the weekend?

MightBeMad Fri 06-Sep-13 06:36:27

Hello all. Can I join you? I'm giving myself until the weekend to binge, then dc2 will be 6 weeks old and the lose the baby weight campaign begins grin Half a stone by Halloween sounds like a good target. I need to lose a stone in total to be back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Not recovered enough yo run yet, I'm hoping up do it with diet, walking and swimming/walking around the pool with the baby smile

MightBeMad Fri 06-Sep-13 06:37:40

Sorry about the typos; wretched iPhone blush

CharlotteBr0nteSaurus Fri 06-Sep-13 08:30:12

I am 11st 6! 5lbs off.
It's not really 5lb though - lots of water weight, plus when I was weighed last week I kept my shoes on.
I still reckon there's probably a pound of actual weight loss there though.

AliceinSlumberland Fri 06-Sep-13 08:49:06

I'll join please!

Was 12 stone 7 ish at start of the summer and managed to loose 7lb through 5:2 and c25k but 5:2 turned me into a good obsessed maniac and the running made my back go, apparently I have a week spot. So I have up ha!

I'm now exactly 12 stone (5ft9ish) and can't seem to get past this barrier. Trying to do about an hour walk a day, and just going to stop eating rubbish! Also less bread, I eat a lot of bread so that is going, I read somewhere to think of it as cake so that's what I'll do.

Having a 3 course meal with friends tonight involving pasta, garlic bread and profiter rolls so not a good start. May just eat fruit for today to try and balance it out.

mabeg3 Fri 06-Sep-13 08:50:03

10 st 4....sad i'd like to be 9st 6....any lighter and i look about 10 yrs older! have shifted a pound or so this week . back to work properly and no snacking has helped... .will try and cut down the wine this weekend.....spritzers and diet tonics for me!smile

AliceinSlumberland Fri 06-Sep-13 08:50:16

Sorry so many spelling errors, food, weak, gave etc

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 06-Sep-13 08:52:15

We have a nine people!! 9 stone 13.5 lbs. I haven't had a 9 at the start of my weight in at least 2 years.. 1.5lbs down since last week. Just have to keep it up now!

Well done everyone else on your losses and motivation!

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 06-Sep-13 09:58:07

Nugget, well done on breaking through to the 9s!

AliceinSlumberland Fri 06-Sep-13 10:24:59

Massive well done on hitting the 9s!! I know how good it feels as this morning for the first time in years there is an 11 at the start on mine! 11stone 13lbs but yes need to not ruin it now and keep on going.

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 06-Sep-13 10:36:17

I am now 9st 7 with a BMI of 24.38. Since the start of the thread I have lost 2 pounds and put it back on again. I did weigh myself a bit later in the day than usual, and with damp hair, so should be heading in the right direction next week.

Anyone else using wi fit for exercise on days like today?

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 06-Sep-13 10:42:09

Well done Meg, and thanks for the thread.

I am using fitness pal as a food diary now to help me eat something for breakfast and cut out the night time snacking.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Fri 06-Sep-13 10:57:06

Everyone's doing so well!
I'd dipped by a pound by Wednesday but today half a pound appears to have returned (story of the last 3 years!).
But half a pound is better than nothing so will press on. I do feel better for not imbibing ice cream/wine in the evenings; even without the wine I'd feel hungover next day from the drop in blood sugar.

I seem to have acquired a Greek yoghurt with strawberries and honey habit in its stead hmm. Will knock that on the head and substitute with a savoury snack.

MizK Fri 06-Sep-13 12:57:07

Well done on all the losses! yegods a 9 is something I haven't seen for many years, must feel amazing! Well done smile

shotgun a loss is a loss and at least using my fitness pal can get you into the habit of mindful eating, that's got to be a good thing.

Feel a bit iffy about the weekend, there seems to be so much extra food around! Went for a run this morning and am eating very lightly today so I can have pudding and an illicit glass of wine later. Then have lunch and shopping with a friend tomorrow, a friend who likes to indulge in a Saturday afternoon cocktail or 2, wish me luck as I want to keep on track to get the next couple of pounds off this week!

Have lovely weekends all, hope we all stay roughly on target smile

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 06-Sep-13 13:11:08

It did feel amazing when I got down to a 9 something, I remember feeling like I was walking on air for a while, it was fantastic! (even though I was about 7 stone when I got married).

Of an evening I keep thinking 'it's getting too dark to go for a run now, I'll get up early and go in the morning' but have not been able to get myself up out of bed in time to get the run done before the local school children fill the pavements. No excuses on a Saturday though, so will make myself, even if it is a walk in the rain and not a proper run.

I did manage to make myself get on the wi fit. It had been 25 days since my last lot of bibbling about on it, and I've lost what little balance I had built up. I can spare a few minutes a day on it to have a stretch though.

MegBusset Fri 06-Sep-13 16:45:41

It's our 10th wedding anniversary tonight so DH and I are going out for a meal to a Belgian restaurant, I may have to put dieting on hold so I can enjoy the frites and cherry beer! Then not step on the scales tomorrow morning grin

thehomesecretary Fri 06-Sep-13 20:12:07

Hello. Could I join too? DC2 is four weeks old and I'm ready to start shifting this baby weight! I am currently 9 stone 8 and want to get down to my pre pregnancy weight of 8 stone 8 by Christmas. But half a stone by Halloween would be great.
Haven't had much time to exercise recently as have been stuck in the house with a poorly toddler for the last week, but have been avoiding snacking and trying to eat smaller portions! My SIL has recently lost a lot of weight on the 5:2 so was thinking of starting that. Does anyone know whether its ok to do while breastfeeding?

MegBusset Sat 07-Sep-13 08:26:33

Thehomesecretary I don't know much about 5:2 but there is a dedicated topic for it so you'd probably be able to find out there if you could do it while BFing. I wouldn't do it myself as a) I would get too obsessive about food/fasting and b) I don't see how it can work longterm unless y

MegBusset Sat 07-Sep-13 08:27:40

...you follow it forever.

Well I really enjoyed my meal out last night but ran 5k this morning so hopefully that cancels out some of it!

Imflabulous Sat 07-Sep-13 08:35:53

Morning all, I forgot I posted on this thread, I weighed in this morning and I'm 1.5lb down (woo hoo) but I have had a not so angelic 3 days soooo must be uber good this week to counter act the effects. Think I may also do the c25k starting Monday, I have done this twice already, lastyl year and early this year.

Today is diet day off day (like last 3 days) so may have a few treats.

NuggetofPurestGreen Sat 07-Sep-13 14:39:46

Thanks everyone I'm really pleased with the loss, was 10 and a half stone at start of year so great to get back in the 9s.

I did have about 900 glasses of wine last night but Friday night is my night off. Didn't have any takeaway though just snaffled some chips off my fella.

Try to take it easy the rest of the weekend now.

yegodsandlittlefishes Sat 07-Sep-13 16:40:20

Thanks to posting on here that I would go for a run, I did manage to make myself go out and do it. Only 2k and more of a walk than a run, but it was something! :D

I'm trying to be good this weekend because we're going out to celebrate (my birthday/DH finding work) next week, so want to be able to enjoy wine and maybe a pudding. have just eaten fruit and a breakfast bar so far today and I keep fantasising about eating junk food!

Jossysgiants Sun 08-Sep-13 12:22:34

Can I join you all- have maintained a happy weight of 9 st 10 easily for the last few years. Weight has now somehow gone up to 10 st 2 so need to nip it in the bud. Want to lose it sensibly so it stays off. Finding it harder as I am getting older so using my fitness pal to try and keep myself in track. None of my clothes fit me so feeling pretty glum at the moment...

MizK Mon 09-Sep-13 09:28:08

Hi jossy, sorry you feel glum, its horrid not to fit your clothes nicely. At least you are sorting out the extra few pounds before they become a stone and a half (wish I'd done the same!)

meg glad you had a nice evening out, good on you for running the very next day!

yegods sometimes making yourself actually do the exercise is harder than anything else so you should be proud you did it! Walking, running,it all helps, right?

Had a bit of a bad weekend in terms of food and alcohol, although it was brilliant in every other way! I fitted in a walk in the woods plus a long walk home instead of taking the bus, so just going to get back on it today and hope for a further loss on thursday. Started the day with a run so off to a good start smile

MegBusset Mon 09-Sep-13 22:13:21

I ended up going out last night too blush, didn't OD on food/booze too much though! My parents have been visiting so we've been taking the opportunity to go out in the evening, we don't get out that often!

Have been aching from my run but that's to be expected when I haven't been running in so long. Will go out again tomorrow after dropping the DC at school as long as it's not heaving down.

Jossysgiants Mon 09-Sep-13 22:46:22

Thanks Mizk I have taken myself in hand and feeling much more positive. Focussing on making healthy choices rather than just worrying about weight - trying to cut out booze during the week as well. Well done on your run.
Good luck everyone for the week ahead. I baked a cake this evening and didn't scrape the bowl..so feeling v saintly.

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 11-Sep-13 21:20:07

Hope everyone's doing okay this week. I have been pretty good (weekend excepted) but really I'm aiming for being good Sunday to Thursday as I know I'll indulge Friday night and Saturdays. Trying to just be balanced and zen and accept that sometimes you will eat takeaways and have wine but just to balance it out during the week. And not get obsessed which is important too!

Have walked 10k today which is great, 5k Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully do 10k tomorrow and Friday too!

MegBusset Wed 11-Sep-13 21:57:52

That's really good. I've been at work today so not much opportunity for exercise, have been reasonably good foodwise though. Oh and I ran 5k yesterday.

I'm going out for dinner tomorrow night with a bunch of MNers so might have to drive to make sure I don't drink!

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 11-Sep-13 22:08:19

Thanks Meg, it's 5k to work and 5k home so that's how I fit it in. I'm crap at doing anything "extra".

Dinner with MNers sounds fun! More fun with booze though wink. But then the dreaded hangover hunger to deal with so maybe better driving smile

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 11-Sep-13 22:09:10

Well done on the run btw.

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 11-Sep-13 22:09:11

Well done on the run btw.

MegBusset Thu 12-Sep-13 07:48:34

Morning all smile

9st 4.5lb this morning so the same as last week, I'm happy with not having gained considering it was quite a food & booze-heavy weekend!

yegodsandlittlefishes Thu 12-Sep-13 09:40:28

Morning all, how is everyone getting on?

I'm down to 9st 5 something so heading in the right general direction despite a couple of nights out. Have had a tummy bug too though, so lighter but certainly not fitter.

MyNameIsSuz Thu 12-Sep-13 09:42:55

I'm planning to weigh myself tomorrow morning, but I don't think it's going to be good. I have done an hour of belly dancing and an hour of buggy fit this week, but also fell off the oreo wagon quite spectacularly, hopefully they'll cancel each other out.

NuggetofPurestGreen Thu 12-Sep-13 18:34:48

I like your attitude Meg - the same is better than a gain! And there's always going to be booze and food heavy weekends.

Weighing in tomorrow hoping for a small loss but will try to be pragmatic if not!

GaryBuseysTeeth Thu 12-Sep-13 19:04:18

Weighing tomorrow morning.
And then we're away for a week, luckily with the PIL so DH & I are going running every morning. Childfree time that could be spent having sex & we're not?!

Well done on the not gaining Meg
Well done on the loss yegods!

Nugget, awesome amount of walking/running!

HomeSec, I think we were on the Aug antenatal together? Congrats! Personally I don't think I could've bf & 5:2, have you started yet?

NuggetofPurestGreen Thu 12-Sep-13 19:10:05

Thanks Gary! Just walking but another 10k today! So that's 30k so far this week and will go for 10k more tomorrow.

Good luck with your weigh-in tomorrow smile

And well done yegods 9 stone 5 sounds great to me!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Thu 12-Sep-13 19:35:19

10st 4 today - that's another pound and a half (2 in total)!
No exercise to speak of (30k - respec!), but will step up the walking.

NuggetofPurestGreen Thu 12-Sep-13 19:43:09

Yeah it is a lot when you look at it added up like that I suppose!! It's an hour each way (slow walker). If I did it both ways every day it would be 50k a week but can't manage on Mondays....will make it up over the weekend.

Well done on the loss!

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 13-Sep-13 09:11:00

9 stone 12.5 lbs. Woo hoo! Pound off since last week grin

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 13-Sep-13 10:46:37

Thanks for the encouragement!Recording all I eat on fitness pal is really helping.
Yesterday I stood in the crisp aisle and convinced myself I don't like crisps any more. I was craving them last night, so am very glad I didn't buy any!

Hope the weekend weighers are doing well.

Well done everyone who is sticking this out.

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 13-Sep-13 10:47:39

Well done Nugget, on the miles of walking and the weight loss! Very encouraging.

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 13-Sep-13 18:51:25

Thanks yegods. I'm delighted.

Isn't it funny the way sometimes you can stick at it and other times you just can't get motivated? I was 10 stone 7 at start of year and managed to lose and gain the same 3 or 4 pounds over and over from January to August. Then in August something just stuck and I've been losing a pound a week for the last 6 or 7 weeks. Hopefully I can keep it up now and not slip back into old ways!!!

yegodsandlittlefishes Fri 13-Sep-13 20:25:52

Yes, I know! Sometimes I am just too good at persuading myself that I am really losing weight or getting fitter when I'm not too.

Very tempting to give in to comfort eating while feeling ill lately.

MyNameIsSuz Sat 14-Sep-13 07:59:16

9 stone 2 this morning, that's only 1lb sad

I have eaten terribly the last couple of days though, I went down the biscuit isle (it's right by the door at our stupid Waitrose, this is why I should only go to Sainsburys) and the baby hasn't been sleeping well so I've been tired and eating more than I should.

Next week will be better! Hope everyone else is doing better than I am?

NuggetofPurestGreen Sat 14-Sep-13 14:25:12

I think a pound in a week is great Suz. It's hard to lose more than that when you're already only in the 9 stones. I think you're doing great smile

MegBusset Sat 14-Sep-13 17:30:38

Yep I have to agree, I've been 9st-something since I was a teenager apart from pregnancy and the odd bout of illness and each pound is much harder to get off than if you're heavier. On the plus side there's less to lose and slowly losing it is more sustainable ime. I'll be very happy if I can average 1lb a week.

Anyway I think I deserve some kind of award because I shared out a big bag of Haribo Tangfastics amongst the children and ate none myself!

NuggetofPurestGreen Sat 14-Sep-13 18:40:55

Same here Meg a pound a week would be perfect for me.

yegods very hard not to comfort eat when ill. Hope you feel better soon.

Rowlers Mon 16-Sep-13 18:04:02

So I have been using MFP to keep an eye on what I eat and most days I'm sticking to it.
There has been the odd day when I've caved and had apple crumble after roast dinner but mostly been sticking close to 1400 calories a day.
I appear to have lost about 3 pounds when I weigh myself first thing in the morning. Hurrah!
However, when I get on the scales later in the day I seem to have lost almost nothing at all!
Which is my real weight?!?!? Confused. (Hoping it's the first thing in the morning one)

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 16-Sep-13 18:57:14

Well Rowlers i always go by the first thing in the morning weight as you just get full up of food and drinks as the day goes on ( well that's my brilliant scientific explanation anyway).

As long as you weigh yourself consistently first thing or last thing or whatever time you should be able to compare with previous weight and see if you are losing. But first thing is the best weight grin

Rowlers Mon 16-Sep-13 19:45:42

Thanks Nugget that was exactly what I wanted to hear!

yegodsandlittlefishes Mon 16-Sep-13 20:38:36

I agree word for word!

Jossysgiants Mon 16-Sep-13 21:21:41

Hello all. Had a very strange week worrying like crazy about an abnormal smear test result. But now reporting back. Have been eating 1200 calories a day logging on my fitness pal. No meat, cut down coffee to 2 a day from 6. Cut down booze. Have been drinking 4 large teapots of herbal tea a day. Starting every morning with a cup of hot water beore my coffee. I have gone from 10 st 2 to 9st 8.5 since last Sunday.... I have never ever lost so much weight in a short space of time even when low carbing. It must be the herbal tea which has stopped me retaining water... It is bizarre...

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 16-Sep-13 21:58:51

<runs to shop for herbal tea>

Good news on the weight loss Jossy. Hope all okay with your smear .

yegodsandlittlefishes Mon 16-Sep-13 22:05:26

What kind of herbal tea? <checks cupboard>

Jossysgiants Tue 17-Sep-13 06:43:18

All and any - camomile, peppermint, licorice. All I can think is that it is like drinking water really and I must actually be well hydrated for once and so everything is working better.. <speculates wildly> I just make a big pot and drink it at my desk. As soon as it is finished pretty much I make another one...my skin has improved a bit too.
All ok thanks nugget . Need a procedure but the consultant is leaving it a couple of weeks as I have a break planned. Thank god I didn't leave it any later though.

yegodsandlittlefishes Tue 17-Sep-13 07:53:36

Thanks Jossy.
Sorry to read about you smear, glad that it was found early and you have a procedure lined up.

Will get some licorice, as I think I've found that effective before. Have been drinking lots of peppermint tea.

MyNameIsSuz Tue 17-Sep-13 10:27:44

Yegods, I like green tea with lemon first thing in the morning and am sure that's the reason I didn't gain any weight while pregnant (I went off normal tea completely and usually drink gallons of the stuff). Clipper do a nice one.

yegodsandlittlefishes Tue 17-Sep-13 21:06:17

I enjoy a fennel tea in the morning these days, I used to like lemon but my tastes have changed. I've had a cold this week and completely gone off coffee, having used it as 2 meals a day for over a year. It means I'm now eating something for breakfast and lunch and I can feel my waistband (on my larger sized work trousers) digging in now. I have stocked up on various new teas. (Licorice, mints, echinacea, etc.)

MegBusset Wed 18-Sep-13 08:11:03

I drink loads of fruit/herbal tea since I had to give up caffeine because of migraines. Twinings cherry & cinnamon is my current fave.

Anyway this morning I weigh 9st 2.5lb, that's 2lb down from last week smile Posting a day early in case I put on a pound overnight grin

fishonabicycle Wed 18-Sep-13 09:43:02

Is it ok if I join? I am short (5'1") and old (48) and although I haven't weighed myself lately, I think I have put on a bit of weight (tight trousers). I guess I probably would like to lose about half a stone (I will weigh myself next time I am at the gym and see what the damage is).

yegodsandlittlefishes Wed 18-Sep-13 11:16:09

Well done Meg! That is a great loss, it's all paying off at last!
I will not tell you what I weighed this morning, as it was later than usual. I'll post tomorrow and see if I can lose a few pounds overnight.

yegodsandlittlefishes Wed 18-Sep-13 11:22:05

Welcome fish! I am just under 5'2" myself and nearly the same age, you are not alone. Well done on going to the gym. We all seem to have different weigh-in days. Ime it does help to stick to just one day a week to note weight (and other measurements) but certainly non needed every day, more a matter of making and then sticking to good habits.

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 18-Sep-13 19:29:44

Well done Meg that's great. Nearly there now!

yegodsandlittlefishes Thu 19-Sep-13 10:48:11

Well, I am the same weight as yesterday. That's 9 stone 8, so I have put on 3 pounds. Must avoid sweet foods. Must avoid sweet foods (e.g. Thornton's chocolates) and much of anything at breakfast/lunch. sad

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Thu 19-Sep-13 12:46:04

10st 3 so that's another pound down! grin.
Must admit, I've started a course this week so I think there's been an element of nerves-related calorie burning!

MizK Thu 19-Sep-13 13:22:35

Hey all, tried to post a few times but STUPID phone won't let me, hence I grabbed a moment on the laptop!

yegods could gain be hormone related? The week before my period I can fluctuate upwards quite fast!

meg and shotgun well done smile.... I have had a lot more junk etc this week, however last weigh in I was 11st " so thats 6 pounds off altogether. Back on it today so hoping to hit the magical half stone by this time next week.

shotgun which course are you doing? I start uni next week so can relate to the nerves!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Thu 19-Sep-13 19:46:36

6 pounds is amazing MizK!
I'm doing Fine Art < wibble >. How about you?

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 20-Sep-13 08:59:54

9 stone 10 and a half so two pounds less than last week. Yay. However I tried on a pair of size ten trousers last night which I thought used to fit me when I was under 10
stone and couldn't get them anywhere near closed. So now I'm worried I'm not really losing weight and scales is broken or something!

Probably just small trousers though grin

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 20-Sep-13 09:00:59

Well done everyone else on losses! And yegods maybe it's hormonal as another poster says.

GaryBuseysTeeth Sat 21-Sep-13 07:51:09

Well done on the losses!

YeGods, I put on half a stone just before my period comes on. So like others say, hopefully it's that.

Put on 4lbs this week, had 2 three course meals, more coffees than is healthy (we were on holiday & the cottage had a tassimo machine!) but I went for 3 runs & a long old walk so not feeling too bad about it.
Plus it feels like my period might be coming on, although I've felt like that for weeks now (BFN a few days ago incase you're wondering)!

Nugget, since having children my hips are, usually half an inch bigger...when was the last time you tried on the trousers?

yegodsandlittlefishes Sat 21-Sep-13 08:19:48

Last weigh-in was possibly high due to hormones, but wrong week for that really. Time will tell.

Enjoyed some wine last night, but back on track for the weekend.

NuggetofPurestGreen Sat 21-Sep-13 12:24:32

Good stuff yegods and I'm sure you'll see a loss next week.

I had many beers last night but that's okay one night a week.

Gary I don't have kids and my hips are small, it's my belly that's the issue! can't remember what weight I was when I wearing size tens but I thought i only moved to size 12s when I got to 10 stone but I could be misremembering. I'll try them again when I get to 9.5 stone! I can see the weight loss in my belly and face so defo going in the right direction.

MizK Sat 21-Sep-13 15:15:55

Well done nugget!

shotgun Ooh that sounds fab, I bet you'll love the course! I'm doing English, am excited but also a bit butterflyish, mainly about being the oldest one amongst crowds of fresh faced 18 year olds! Good luck and hope your nerves go soon!

Urgh feeling a bit rubbish as succumbed to hefty brie and chutney sandwich for lunch, after having had a doughnut mid morning. If I'd had a smaller sandwich with less cheese I'd have been fine but because of my greedy ways, I feel leaden of tummy....Still, walked for an hour (errands etc) rather than driving, so making the effort in general. Just monitoring what I eat and making sure I exercise most days is making me feel more in control so thats a good thing, right?!

Hope weekend is going well for everybody smile

MegBusset Sun 22-Sep-13 12:15:51

Hope everyone's having a good weekend smile

I have got my period and a bit of a cold so feeling a bit bleurgh. Hoping to go out for a gentle run later though.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Sun 22-Sep-13 19:07:26

Thanks Mizk - English sounds lovely and much more useful. Know what you mean about feeling old - I'm older than lots of the lecturers!
Ther's a few other oldies so it's not too bad - although the fact that they call anyone over 21 a 'mature student' rankles a bit.
Have a good week all.

NuggetofPurestGreen Sun 22-Sep-13 19:21:16

Having a good weekend as in enjoyable, but not very good diet wise grin. That's alright though I tend to focus on being extra healthy on weeknights so I can relax a bit at weekend. Did go for a walk today and yesterday though.

Good luck with your new college courses Shotgun and MizK - I did English in university 16 years ago it was great smile

yegodsandlittlefishes Sun 22-Sep-13 19:58:32

I baked 6 cakes today (using up gardens from the garden) and have only had one small slice. 1 gone to Dh's work, 4 in freezer.

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 15:10:28

I need to lose about half a stone - currently running out of ideas though sad
I am basically eating lots of cereal, fruit, yogurt, and salad. Lunch is cheese-based.
I have one treat day on a Saturday and I tend to go a bit crazy then so I know I need to work on this.
I run 4x per week, swim once, cycle once.

MegBusset Mon 23-Sep-13 20:01:06

Hmm, well without knowing your portions/weight but just on your post, I'd have to say that cereal/yoghurt/fruit are usually packed with sugar, and I have had to pretty much give up cheese sad

yegodsandlittlefishes Mon 23-Sep-13 20:30:03

Yes, I count yogurt (except natural low fat yogurt) cheese (too salty and fatty) and fruit (sweet) as treats these days!

I find what helps is more protein (fish, lean meat) less salt and sugar. Halve your portion sizes on everything apart from salad and greens. Eat less cereal/bread. Tends to work, if I can stick to it.

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 23-Sep-13 21:33:53

I eat two portions of fruit every day which I think is reasonable and natural low fat yoghurt for breakfast. But while I do eat cheese I am quite sparing with it ie I eat things like low fat Philadelphia or slices of plastic cheese where it's easy to control the portion size or a small bit of grated cheddar in an omelette. No half blocks of cheddar in a baguette though! grin

But as Meg says hard to comment without knowing portion sizes etc.

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 23-Sep-13 21:37:55

Sorry I think my point was there you can eat some yoghurt a and cheese and fruit and lose weight but you need go watch portions.

Had a panic earlier that I was going to lose the weight and get to my goal and then just go mad eating everything again and put it all back on. Must remember this is a lifestyle
change not a diet....

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 21:40:05

Eeek - you got me - I am a sugar addict! (Says she, sitting down to usual evening meal of a banana, handful of grapes, handful of blueberries, topped with a small pot of yogurt and a handful of muesli!!) Basically I figure if I wasn't eating this stuff it would be biscuits and cakes - it has been in the past - but by going for fruit etc as a source of sugar I have managed to lose nearly 4 stone in the past 18 months. And kept it off too, until the last couple of months when that half stone plus has crept back on sad
I'm now just over 9 and a half stone, and am 5'6. I was 9 stone at the end of July, and much happier. Do you think it's the summer holiday effect?
Other than my fruit and cereal addiction, I generally have a big bowl of porridge for breakfast, an apple mid-morning, cheese, oatcakes and salad for lunch, an apple and cereal bar mid-afternoon ... I drink gallons and gallons of herbal tea.
I am also becoming a vegetarian - have really gone off meat recently. So, I do struggle with the eating lean meat thing.

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 21:41:22

Dreaming of half a block of cheddar on a baguette now though!! shock

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 21:44:26

yegods if you count yogurt and fruit as treats (yikes!!!), and try not to eat much cereal / bread, what do you do for breakfast? Do you go for protein in the morning?

MegBusset Mon 23-Sep-13 21:49:32

RunningLou well done on the weight loss first of all!

Secondly that definitely is a really carb- and sugar-heavy diet. Thirdly I would be starving if fruit and cereal was all I ate! Do you not have proper meals at all?

The low-carb threads might be good for some ideas, I know there are some veggies on them. I'm veggie too and like my carbs too much to quit entirely but I have things like soups/casseroles/stir fry/curry and use Quorn instead of meat in a few things.

yegodsandlittlefishes Mon 23-Sep-13 21:49:41

I used to. Salad & fish and low carb menu.

These days I usually just have water, herbal teas and coffee. Maybe juice. If I get hungry, I have a piece of fresh fruit or small breakfast bars I make from melted very dark chocolate and coconut oil, mixed with dried fruits and nuts (and sometimes quinoa flakes).

MegBusset Mon 23-Sep-13 21:52:55

This is a 'good' day for me, if it helps:

Breakfast: porridge with soya milk, sweetened with cinnamon
Morning snack: banana
Lunch: small roll with Quorn ham, side salad (no dressing)
Afternoon snack: apple
Dinner: veg stir fry with egg noodles

So there's cereal and fruit in there but not too much!

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 21:56:31

Really good veggie ideas Meg, thank you! Have to confess I do not have proper meals ... I hate preparing stuff, though I do make myself cook for DC, who are properly fed and do have casseroles and home-made soup and so on.
I just find if I have something like that, my sugar cravings still kick in and I'm like - well, that quorn stir-fry was lovely, but where's PUDDING?! And then I'll go and eat a yogurt / cereal bar / fruit anyway ...

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 21:58:57

Thank you for that day menu - really helpful. I have porridge with almond milk in the mornings, which I really like! I know I'd want something sweet after a roll for lunch though sad
Have you found that diet works well for you in terms of weight loss and energy levels?

MegBusset Mon 23-Sep-13 22:06:02

I am not always so strict! But yes, energy levels fine. I run 3 x week as well.

I have a stock of the Aldi no added sugar yogs in the fridge just in case I can't do without a sweet fix. But the more I go without sugar (and that includes fruit tbh) I find the less I want it. I had a piece of flapjack that the kids left yesterday, usually I could eat about 6 of them, but having not really had anything sugary for a few weeks, it tasted really sickly sweet.

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 22:10:28

Do you run in the morning or the evening normally? How long do you go out for?
I've found running does make me pretty hungry - should really look at adding in some more protein to deal with that I guess.

MegBusset Mon 23-Sep-13 22:15:39

I run in the morning when possible, and always on an empty stomach - find it really uncomfortable otherwise! I find the day of the run it suppresses my appetite; the day after I'm more likely to feel hungrier.

I run 5k at a time so not exactly long distance, if you're doing longer runs I'd imagine you might need more food...

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 22:21:03

I've heard running on an empty stomach helps with fat-burning so that's great! I hate running when I haven't eaten though, I conk out after about 30 mins. Best time is about 2 hours after eating for me, so normally go about 7pm after small snack at 4:30-5, or 9am at weekends.
I do 1x5k, 2x8k, 1xsomething longer depending on how I feel and how long I can get DH to look after the kids for grin

runningLou Mon 23-Sep-13 22:22:22

In terms of 'proper' meals, is it better to do them at lunchtime or in the evening? I'm always really tired in the evening and de-motivated to cook ...

MegBusset Tue 24-Sep-13 07:46:57

I know if I have a main meal at lunchtime, I want another in the evening! So I always have a light lunch.

Can you not have what your kids have in the evening, as you're making it already?

yegodsandlittlefishes Tue 24-Sep-13 10:24:39

I'm the same Meg. I know I should eat more earlier in the day, but then I seem to need all my energy to digest the food, and just get hungry again later anyway (and can't sleep when hungry).

I've been anaemic and had been forgetting to take iron. Took some last night and was able to go for a run/walk early this morning which felt great.

runningLou Tue 24-Sep-13 13:36:48

Well done on the run yegods - that's great!
I'll be going later - probably after DC's bedtime.
Have really been thinking about what Meg said about my diet, and I think I'd been kidding myself that I was eating 'healthy' foods, ie. fruit etc, and not questioning about the carb balance, which is clearly well out of whack sad
Had good resolutions for a low-carb lunch today, but after speaking to estate agents all morning (having house valued to move), I had no invention left, so it's back to my faithful cheese sandwich with green salad ...
Fingers crossed I will get a bit more experimental later in the week.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Tue 24-Sep-13 20:00:18

Yegods, those bars sound delish! What's the proportions?
Lou, maybe, rather than focussing on lowering the carbs, try thinking of it as a case of increasing theprotein. Like Meg, I struggle without carbs; even if I substitute rice cakes for breadwith my omelette in the morning I'm climbing the walls and losing my temper after half an hour.

Ifyou make sure to have a decent amount of ptoteinwith every meal (milk or yoghurt don't do the trick for me but some people find them enough), you'll find the sweet cravings are gradualy pushed aside. And if you snack, again add protein (couple of nuts or slice of cheese, for eg ).

But if you eat enough at mealtimes snacks don't need to figure regularly.
I add chopped nuts to porridge, and a dollop of peanut butter on toast or a gluten free roll is a pretty standard breakfast for me.

yegodsandlittlefishes Tue 24-Sep-13 22:00:28

Melt a bar or two of dark choc (so 100g - 200g) then approx a tablespoon/third of a cup of coconut oil (this helps the bars stay solid at room temp and the coconut oil is healthy as oils/fats go.) Add roughly chopped dried fruit (e.g. apricots, figs, dates, etc) so that the chocolate can (just) cover it all. I usually add about 3 or 4 handfuls. (More fruit if there is nothing else to add). Then add finely chopped nuts, if using and/or quinoa flakes or rolled oats if using, a little at a time so it all gets in contact with the chocolate and turns chocolate coloured.

runningLou Tue 24-Sep-13 22:16:31

Thanks Shotgun I will definitely focus on upping the protein. Still not that keen on meat but I guess I can do a lot with eggs, fish and nuts in the meantime. Love peanut butter - my favourite thing! My treat breakfast on a Saturday is a wholemeal bagel with peanut butter smile

runningLou Wed 25-Sep-13 23:26:38

Well I have focused on playing down the carbs tonight! Felt very strange! After the gym I had quorn sausages with broccoli and pumpkin seed omelette, grilled tomatoes and peas.
Now I think I need to work on portion size as it felt like loads!! Still, good to eat some greens in the evening rather than fruit. Have put aside half the broccoli, seeds and peas for lunch tomorrow with fish.

yegodsandlittlefishes Thu 26-Sep-13 07:35:44

9 stone 8 again.

Right, back on the offensive and no looking back.

GaryBuseysTeeth Thu 26-Sep-13 12:45:43

9st 8 down from 9st 10...and it's the first day of my period so hopefully I'll be even lighter next week!
<pompoms> for yegods

runningLou, I tend to snack if I eat later so I have my biggest meal at breakfast (usually leftovers or chicken something or other) & then don't eat after 6.

Haven't done any exercise this week so far, although I'm counting 2hrs of softplay running after a toddler with a 10lb baby strapped to me! <knackered>

MegBusset Thu 26-Sep-13 22:13:06

Well done Gary and keep going Yegods!

9st 3.5lb today so 1lb up which is slightly annoying BUT I have got my period so that always makes me a bit heavier. Onwards and downwards for next week!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Fri 27-Sep-13 07:25:21

Sorry forgot to check in yeserday; 10st 2 so another pound down yay!
I did briefly dip to 10 st 1 but too much wine and choc did for that. Don't want to be losing it too fast - shock to the system and all smile

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 27-Sep-13 09:10:50

9 stone 9 this morning which is 1.5 down from last week BUT I was out last night and had several hundred beers so dehydration is probably contributing! So going to assume 9 stone 9.5 really grin which is still one pound down from last week. Feel like I'm defo on track for 9.5 stone by Halloween hooray!

Well done everyone else and keep going !

runningLou Sat 28-Sep-13 08:14:06

9 stone 7 this morning, so I'm bang on that half stone to lose ...
Really been trying to cut the carbs this week. Yesterday lunch was a green salad with goats cheese, walnuts and a bit of ham. Enjoying having a bit more variety for now!
Right, off to parkrun to do my 5k smile

MegBusset Sat 28-Sep-13 11:32:57

9st 1.5lb this morning so officially striking Wednesday's weigh-in from the record grin

runningLou Sat 28-Sep-13 14:51:16

Wow!! What magic have you been working this past couple of days?!

MegBusset Sat 28-Sep-13 16:38:42

Well it's only 1lb down from last week, my period had just added 2lb in the meantime!

runningLou Sat 28-Sep-13 18:40:46

Fab that you are so near target though and it's not even October yet smile
Have had a 'bad' Saturday so it's back to being strict tomorrow!

yegodsandlittlefishes Mon 30-Sep-13 08:32:24

I weighed myself mid week yesterday. 9 stone 10. I thought I had lost weight though. Does anyone know if the scales in a wii fit can be tampered with, or calibrated?

runningLou Mon 30-Sep-13 17:37:31

I've put on a pound over the weekend - always happens sad
How to prevent that weekend gain?? Had a big lunch on Sat, with pudding, and a glass of wine Sat evening, but was back to being good Sunday and ran Sat am and Sun pm!
Do you really have to be saintly every day or is a treat day ok?

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 30-Sep-13 18:53:16

A treat day is fine and I usually find I lose any weekend gain over the course of the week. Are you weighing yourself more than once a week? Like pre and post weekend cos I think daily fluctuations are normal. I weigh in Friday mornings only (which means the weekend gain is well gone grin) and I usually have Friday night and Saturday 'off' the healthy eating and am still losing a pound a week steadily enough.

runningLou Mon 30-Sep-13 22:21:38

Have to confess to weighing myself every day and sometimes morning and evening after running blush
Official weigh-in is Friday and then like you I tend to relax things Friday evening and Sat morning.
This used to work fine for me when I was losing steadily but since that sneaky half stone has crept back on I don't seem to be able to get over the weekend glut!

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 30-Sep-13 23:44:27

It doesn't sound like you even went overboard at weekend though! Just one big meal and one glass of wine?! Just don't take any notice of that Monday pound and wait until your official weighin - that's the only way to compare. And point weighing yourself in the evening when you're full of the day's food! wink

I do occasionally have a sneaky mid week weigh in but I don't take any notice if it appears I've gone up a bit...

runningLou Wed 02-Oct-13 09:26:35

That was a restrained weekend Nugget grin I have had far worse ones than that but am really, really trying to rein myself in whilst attempting to get rid of this half stone.
I think you're right about the official weigh-in ... Though I've been reading Rose Elliott's low-carb veggie diet book and it says to weigh yourself every day. That said I don't think I could follow the diet as I have come to realise I am a carb-addict!!
Will try not to weigh myself again until Friday morning.

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 02-Oct-13 20:51:12

Yeah I have zero interest in low carb and I don't really believe in it anyway - would that mean I have to give up beer??! grin

I weighed myself this morning and was a pound heavier than last time - but I am just going to ignore until official weigh in on Friday. I am not holding out much hope for a proper loss this week as had two nights out at the weekend with beer and takeaways and all sorts. But will try to stay motivated all the same!!

yegodsandlittlefishes Wed 02-Oct-13 20:56:18

My weight has gone right up and way down and back at 9 stone 7. Don't seem to be able to eat properly and lose weight. sad

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 02-Oct-13 21:03:00

Funny yegods I wonder what's going on. I suppose just keep going and hope to see a loss again next time???

yegodsandlittlefishes Wed 02-Oct-13 22:22:56

Yep. It is probably down to hypothyroidism. Still hormones, just a knackered thyroid rather than/as well as the usual. It is helping to have to write it down, it could be much worse.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans Thu 03-Oct-13 07:18:23

Another one showing an extra midweek pound here. It's annoying because I don't think I'm overeating, but it seems to happen on days I don't use mfp. Funny that...
Anyway, DD had a bit of a baking day on Saturday, then there was wine /cider/chocolate in the house. But also my probiotics ran out, which erm might account for apparent gains.

GaryBuseysTeeth Thu 03-Oct-13 09:24:35

2lbs lost here! Althought it's down to food poisoning and not hard work.....

Weighing yourself everyday isnt recommended by most diet/fitness plans.
Yegods; have you tried doing weekly bust, waist & hips measurements instead? You might be losing width without realising it, I'm losing half an inch off or so off my hips everyweek but if i didnt measure theres no way i'd know.

What's everyone upto this weekend?

yegodsandlittlefishes Thu 03-Oct-13 20:55:12

Thanks Gary I haven't tried that and I think that would be a good option as I'm more concerned about losing my tummy than what (apparently arbitrary) number comes up on the scales. Thanks, you're a star! I am already comfortably in my medium sized jeans (could only just squeeze into them on a week or two ago) and my work trousers a fitting nicely without the muffin top, so yes it's getting there. Just unbelievable how hard it is.

NuggetofPurestGreen Thu 03-Oct-13 21:07:27

yeah if you're losing your muffin top that's the main thing yegods. I had to buy new trousers this week as my size 12s were too big so got a size 10. A Next size 10 but a 10 nonetheless!!

It is harder when you're already not particularly large. I'm expecting the weight loss to slow down now I'm nearly back in the mid 9s. But must keep going and more importantly not put it back on!

MegBusset Fri 04-Oct-13 10:15:23

I am another daily weigher blush I have been fairly steady around 9st 2lb all week. I definitely feel much better than I did when I started the thread, but like Nugget the temptation is to ease off now I've lost a few pounds not helped by DH who keeps buying me chocolate

So I am aiming for 9st 1lb next Thursday! I went for a run this morning and am going to go for a walk at lunchtime as it's lovely and sunny here.

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 04-Oct-13 18:57:05

9 stone 8.5 this morning so another pound off. Very pleased but must stay focused.

Temptation there to ease off Meg and also meant it gets harder to lose when you're smaller as the lighter you are the less calories you burn. As long as it keeps going downwards though doesn't matter if it takes slightly longer!

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 04-Oct-13 18:57:55

The oops was because I thought I posted too soon but doesn't appear to be the case.

Well done everyone on losses both weight and inches!

runningLou Sat 05-Oct-13 06:38:01

9 stone 5 down from 9 stone 7 yesterday morning, which I would be pleased with if I hadn't spent the rest of the day inhaling chocolate sad House on the market this week, first viewings today, workmen / EPC inspector with muddy feet all over the house yesterday as I tried to tidy / clean round them ... DD in end of the week overtired drama queen mode ... Carbs were needed!
But, am running a half marathon tomorrow so should burn a few!
Well done to all on losses!! Yegods you are inspiring me to kiss goodbye to my muffin top and Meg I would love to see 9 stone 2 again!

yegodsandlittlefishes Wed 09-Oct-13 09:19:06

How is everyone doing?

How did you get on in the marathon, runningLou?

I am weighing in at 9 stone 6 this morning, after my mug of coffee, so am quite pleased with that, even though it is only 1 pound less than on my first weigh-in. BMI is 24.14. Even if I dont manage to lose the full half a stone by Halloween, I would be happy for now to be able to get my BMI down to the 23s and keep it down there. Then will aim to lose more fo Christmas so I can get into the dresses I wore last year!

yegodsandlittlefishes Wed 09-Oct-13 09:22:18

And my muffin top has gone on the medium sized jeans at least until they next get washed

MegBusset Fri 11-Oct-13 10:08:41

Well done Yegods smile How is everyone else doing!

I am still 9st 2lb this week, did have a couple of boozy days earlier in the week (accompanied by chocolate), must try harder next week!

NuggetofPurestGreen Sat 12-Oct-13 17:22:19

I was just under 9 stone 8 yesterday so half a pound off but it's that time of the month so would expect a bigger loss next week to compensate!
I can feel my ribs again through the fat!

Well done everyone else!

MegBusset Mon 14-Oct-13 17:53:26

Well I have been working all weekend (long days) and eaten my bodyweight in hotel breakfasts and stodgy food so am expecting a shocking weight this week, in fact I might give it a couple of days before I go anywhere near the scales!

I did have some very nice food though including a Toblerone milkshake which was just incredible so worth an extra pound or five two!

NuggetofPurestGreen Mon 14-Oct-13 18:51:52

Toblerone milkshake sounds lovely! Well worth it.

I just had a wisdom tooth out so can't really eat anything much. Except icecream maybe??!

NuggetofPurestGreen Fri 18-Oct-13 09:23:07

Just over 9 stone 7 this morning so another half a pound off. In fairness I ate a lot if rubbish this week and no exercise. Back on track next week but I think I have lost my half a stone by Halloween hooray! As long as I don't put on weight for the next two weeks grin.

How's everyone else doing??

MegBusset Sat 19-Oct-13 08:09:09

I'm still 9st 2lb which is not too bad given have not really been that good this week!

MegBusset Fri 25-Oct-13 10:06:07

Hi everyone smile

I am still hovering around the 9st 2lb mark and have decided that I will be happy sticking at this weight, I feel much better having lost 4lb but I don't want to not be able to enjoy wine and chocolate at all, which is what it seems it would take for me to go any lower! I am still running 3x week and really enjoying it.

How is everyone else doing?

yeghoulsandlittledevils Fri 25-Oct-13 11:02:52

Meg That's great, well done!

Nugget Well done on the new ssvele you! Keep it up! (Or down.)

It is hard to know what my weight is, scales here are totally unreliable. I think I might be around the 9 stone 5 mark, and am still aiming for less than 9 stone.
