how do people gain a lot in pregnancy?

because ihave never done. mainly due to hypermeis gravidium (or however you spell it?) i always ended smaller than when i started. then put on weight after baby is born.

i know in my case the HG is extreme and lasts the whole 9months everytime (part of the reason #4 isnt really on the cards, i cant face 9months of puking again and being in hospital on drips). do other peoples appitates really increase a lot in pregnancy?

i havent seen my sisters gain a lot either.

i am out now for the afternoon so may not reply till this evening.

i am curious, thats all.

I really craved carbs when i was carrying boys but still didn't get huge. I think alot of it is pure luck - the same as getting into your size 10's a wk later.

Mine did, especially with dd.

A mid-morning snack would be 2 poached eggs on toast for me. I would also wake up at 6 am because I was so hungry.

I ate very sensibly until the last month or so of my pregnancy, when I suddenly felt starving all the time and really did start 'eating for two'. I wasn't very mobile towards the end of my pregnancy either, so perhaps that didn't help much. I put on 4 stone. I was very slim to start off with, though, so maybe it was natural? I dunno.

I've not been s bad this time but the last two times I felt that if I couldn't drink and I couldn't smoke I was going to eat what I wanted and enjoy it whilst I could and the diet could wait. This time I had lost nearly 4 stone on slimming world then fell pregnant by accident and although I have not carried on with slimming world I haven't gone completely overboard. I also craved carbs and had an aversion to almost anything healthy in the beginning only being able to stomach buttered toast and crisps! This luckily balanced itself with a massive oats and milk craving which I had for breakfast and lunch everyday for a while.

I weighed less at the end of my pregnancy than I did at the start (because I was lardy and chose to eat healthily during pg)BUT for the last two weeks I had the most overwhelming appetite, the need to eat was there constantly and was very, very hard to ignore.
I can see why, if a woman has that surge in appetite from much earlier in pregnancy how she would put on weight.

really, do people get a surge in appitite. i didnt know that as have never experienced that myself.

do some3 people eat normally and still gain a lot? or is it the increase in appatite thats needed.

i know the human body will take everything it needs for the baby. beucase i never had the urge to eat for twop (found it hard to eat for one lol) i just dont know what its like.

i remember being told off by my constantant at the end of my pregnancy for gaining 2kgs. he thought i;d been weighed the week before, but that was my first clinic weight he was comparing to. and baby was almost 8lb.

I know someone who put on 5 stone with their LO. All weight subsequently lost though! I am 18 weeks pg and still weigh less than when I was not pg!! I think it is just that pregnancy is so different for different people - some feel like crap and some feel amazing - same with appetite I think!

I cant see how someone could eat normal amounts and still put on weight (over and above the weight of the baby, waters etc).

The basic maths would still apply I think - if you consume the same amount of energy as you expend your weight will be stable.

Unless there is some sort os physiological change in pg? but I have never heard of that and dont see how it would be possible.

i had hg in pregnancy up until 8 months and was very underweight, big bump and all my ribs sticking out.

when i stopped feeling sick i ate whatever i wanted though not EXCESSIVELY iyswim, i put on weight and kept and bloated look (oh so attractive ) until i stopped breastfeeding when it just fell off, i felt my metabolism changed somehow as my body had been starving for so long i put on weight just in case i was in famine mode again.

I have gained about a stone so far and am 28 weeks into twin pregnancy. I am eating a lot, eating some very bad choices, but seem to only gain round bump. Same happened with last pg and was able to wear normal jeans a couple of days after giving birth.

However before I was ever pg I could gain weight quite easily if I ate badly / didn't exercise. I am always hungry when pregnant, so I always eat .

Actually, kind of lost my appetite today as DS has been puking .

I went up to 16 1/2 stone with DS. A gain of around 4 1/2 stone.

I quit smoking the second that I saw the blue line on the test and eating filled the space of the 15 fags a day. I tried to keep it healthy - but basically i had a piece of fruit everytime I would have had a fag. Eat 15 satsumas a day for 7 months and you will gain 4 1/2 stone

With dd I only gained two stone but I was running around after ds all of the time so didn't have the time to think about food constantly.

Oh and don't forget, some poor ladies suffer terribly with water retention and get very swollen so gain more weight and look bigger despite not necessarily eating themselves stupid.

Egg is right about water retention - I didn't see my ankles for months. I remember shoes started pinching at about 18 wks pregnant. I probably put on 3 stone in pregnancy, lost it all virtually in the two weeks after giving birth. The relief of being able to wear shoes again!

It's a funny thing really - I think alot of it depends on the gentics of the baby itself. For instance my son was a 7.5 pounder, while dd was only diddy 5 pounder like I was. I am only 7 and a bit stone now, so naturally wasn't going to put on loads and have big chunky babys. I weighed about 9 stone at end of preggers so quite a big gain in proportion to my height and weight, and that's a vegan pregnancy. However I was not fat as such, just alot of water weight I think as I weighed just under 8 stone a few days after the birth of ds. Then dropped loads soon as I was breastfeeding and running again!
I had a big appetite throughout both pregancies right up until a few days prebirth for some reason. I think it was my body conserving it's energy for down there!

I was eating about 4-5 proper meals a day, but did exercise up till last 6 weeks I think. However a good friend of mine, although initially heavier anyway, only gained two stone and is much taller, and didn't have much appetite at all. There must be alot of factors that affect appetite and weight gain...

first time around (DD) I was ravenous. I just couldn't stop eating (and if I did, felt v.sick, and needed to keep working and so I ate). I don't know how much I put on as I stopped looking, was stones though (and I wasn't small to start with)
second time around (DS) was completely different. A bit hungrier, not much, put on around 2 stone still (but he was 10lbs 5) and it was all gone by the time he was a couple of months old, and I kept losing (even though now I'm constantly ravenous because he feeds so much)
