I need to lose around 3 stone.

I eat fish, but no meat.

I am fairly active generally. Have started exercising twice a week, but am now upping that to try to do something most days.

I am not a great cook, but want to learn, so nothing too complicated to begin with .

I want to lose some weight quickly so I can keep my motivation up, but i'm not good at being hungry, especially now i'm exercising.

Thanks in advance .

Sorry but I wouldn't do Atkins. Yes you will get good weight loss but look at the food you eat - how is that good? As soon as you stop it, the weight will pile back on.

If I were you I wouldn't go on a diet. What do you eat currently? If you eat a reasonable diet but also junk and alcohol then cut out the junk and alcohol. Aim to eat more fresh foods - colourful salads, veggies, fruit etc. I do believe that the only way to achieve weight loss and maintain it over the long term is to change eating habits and be positive about good foods.

I know what you mean about a quick lose initially to keep up motivation however I think we all know that a reasonable loss is 1-2llb a week - unless of course you are prepared to do somethink like lighterlife which is a whole different ball game.

Aintnomountain - yes, you are right. Atkins always sounded very unhealthy when my MIL did it a few years ago.

G.I. sounds sensible.

I do like a glass of wine (or sometimes 2) of an evening , so will cut it right down.

I don't eat junk (such as crisps, puddings, cake, sweets, choc, biscuits).

I will check out some Low G.I. books. Any particular recommendations ?

Rick Gallop's book is the GI bible. I've started reading it but haven't done the diet yet.
I lost a stone in a month on Atkins and the best part about it is you never have to feel hungry, there's always something you can eat if you're peckish, but I wouldn't do it long term.

If you do Atkins properly it isn't unhealthy. Unfortunately the media have pounced on it and decided that it's all fry ups and lots of red meat, which it isn't at all.

Low carbing is a great way to eat because you will not be hungry, yet can eat quantities of food which makes it really satisfying. And you will eat plenty of salad and vegetables.

If you want to find out more, read the Atkins 'bible' - Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution - where he explains the theory of low carbing. I can also recommend The Idiot Proof Diet, by India Knight and Neris Thomas.

Have lost half a stone on low carb - I 've basically cut out alot of carbs and only have one carb meal a day (usually brekkie or lunch). I have so many more veggies to make up for it - oh, and my treat is a glass of wine - 4 out of 7 nights/week. I exercise 3 times a week (run for 2 miles only). Guess I'd lose alot more if I cut the wine but hey...
Best bit of low carbing is not feeling hungry and therefore less temptation
