I'm due to start this and am quite scared. I have IBS already. I'm horrifically overweight so I do need to lose weight. I'm 33 and vegetarian if that's relevant and have 2 young kids.

Anyone support / reassure me?

Just read about it here

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlistat

I personally wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. It sounds horrific.

You say you are vegetarian and have ibs. Do you eat a lot of wheat, pasta and grains. Do you eat a lot of dairy and sugar.

If the answer is yes this may be why you have ibs as you may have intolerances to all or some of them.

I met up with a friend recently who has been vegetarian for 20 years and has gone back to eating animal protein. She had lost weight, had a vitality about her she never had before and looked and felt amazing.

I really wouldn't put a drug into my body especially one that did that.

I would have a two egg onion omelette for breakfast

A big veggie soup for lunch. We get aldi fresh veg already prepared soup pack and aldi pease pudding which is just lentils. Boil the veg and then put in blender and add pease pudding. A tasty filling soup in 20 mins

Dinner. If you eat fish. I would have fish, steamed veg and a little sweet potato .

Certainly by cutting out the above you will lose weight and you should heal your gut unless you have intolerances to foods that aren't generally triggers.

Ultraclear sustain is a marvelous powder that heals leaky gut. You might want to look at getting some of that. It's full of vitamins and non allergenic foodstuffs.

I'm going to get some more just to give me a boost.

As for that orlistat . Wouldn't touch it. I wouldn't mess up my body with it.

The first thing my doctor got me to do when I saw her with ibs was to get me to cut out all the above plus chicken because she reckoned chicken in this country was very badly infected.

I followed her advice and lost weight. Took the ultraclear sustain and got better. When I've come off the straight and narrow is when I've been unwell again.

I've just give up chicken again.

'To minimize these [side] effects, foods with high fat content should be avoided; the manufacturer advises consumers to follow a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet.'

So is there any point in taking the tablets, really? A low fat, reduced calorie diet will help you lose weight all on its own!

I admit I've heard awful things about orlistat too - I know a couple of people who took it out of desperation and wish they never had. Is it being prescribed by your GP, or are you buying it over the counter, OP?

You sound just like me, I'm veggie and have ibs though I'm 32. I've had orlistat a few years ago and I'm thinking about getting it again.

I thought it was quite good as it stop me from eating any crap as I knew I'd pay for it. I found with healthy diet it did work and it's supposed to be for every 2lb you lose on your own it helps you lose an extra 1lb.

It didn't make my ibs worse, the thing that makes it bad is lots of fruit and vegetables when I diet anyway, so i think it's worth trying. Good luck.

I've never seen the point of taking it because:

a) Fat isn't what makes you fat, sugar is. You need fat in your diet and low fat = high sugar.
b) If you can follow a strict diet to avoid shitting yourself in the queue in Tesco, you can follow it without the tablets.
c) You can get around the side effects. You need to take the tablets before eating but you can just not take it and then eat what you want.

I've taken it. It can work, mainly because you're so terrified to eat fat because of the side effects.
I wouldn't use it now, it's too much of a 'blunt tool'. The side effects can be horrendous, particularly the bloating and wind, which you probably have a problem with anyway with ibs.
If you eat fat, you will have wind and poo out orange oil. If you fart there is a very real risk that you will fart out orange oil. I ruined several bed sheets this way.
But if you don't eat fat you won't have any problems. Like I say, it basically terrifies you into not eating fat.
You can however eat as much sugar as you like, so you may not lose weight anyway.
Please don't think I'm being unsupportive, I know what it's like to need to lose weight. In 2 weeks time I'll be having weight loss surgery. I've struggled with my weight for my entire life. Orlistat was one of the many, many things I've tried & failed at.
Good luck, give it a go, if you don't get on with it you can always stop.

I've been on this, I was so terrified to eat anything with any fat in it incase I shit myself.so yes, I guess it works. But even if you're not shitting yourself, your arse drips oil into your knickers so if I were you if wear a pad at the back. I didn't like it as I was constantly aware of the fact if I farted I'd Crap myself. It became an obsession. Sad

Been reading a book on Alzheimer's and for your brain to function properly you need healthy omega three fats and essential fatty acids.

If orlistat removes all fat you could be getting dangerously low on vital nutrients.

It sounds horrendous.

Report
Germgirl · 28/04/2015 06:30

It doesn't remove all fat, I think it's about 1/2 or 2/3. But yes, it can be horrendous if you eat too much fat.
That's the point I suppose. It works because you're scared of pooing yourself.

Thanks all. Think I've decided to try and manage without it.

Sounds like a good decision. Plus all of these quick fixes don't re educate the body to eat a good, clean healthy diet.
