I'm keen to lose a little bit of weight. I have counted calories before which worked but I had to go quite hardcore and was very hungry. Had another baby now and am at home so feel like MFP a is less sustainable.

If I do hflc do I have to really go for it or else risk gaining? Like can I do it casually? Aiming to eat less carbs and more fat but still a relatively normal diet.

Having done low carb, it is not something I would dip in and out of. It doesn't work like that.

Slimming World might suit you better.

You can't do it casually - for the science behind it to work you need to commit to it.

I drop the carbs sometimes to save calories and have big salads / veg etc but it's not 'proper' low Carbing.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I need to read up on it a bit more. Still relatively worth it to replace carbs with fat sometimes? Eg having full fat yoghurt for breakfast or an avocadoy lunch instead of carbs?

You should be eating full fat stuff anyway, fat free dairy and low fat snacks are absolutely packed full of sugar and sweeteners. I don't actually notice that much of a difference calorie-wise (not enough to bother me, anyway) but I feel fuller and I no longer get headaches.

When low carbing your body goes into a state called ketosis, which is where is burns its fat reserves instead of carbs/sugars. If you were to low carb casually you would either never reach ketosis or you'd knock yourself out of it and that would result in you feeling hungry and craving sugar.

You can definitely reduce carbs and replace them with protein and some fat to have a good effect.
No need to leap headlong in any particular direction.

If you get rid of the low fat products and replace them with natural, less processed, full fat
and aim to reduce sugar - which is of course carbohydrate
it should work

Low carb definitely works for me, with the bonus of not being hungry!

Any tips on some good high fat stuff that keeps you full?

Other than yoghurt and avocado!

oily fish, eggs, cheese

in fact combine them all into Delia's eggs alpine with smoked salmon on the side
www.deliaonline.com/recipes/main-ingredient/eggs/alpine-eggs.html

or for breakfast, smoked mackerel with a poached egg

suppers : cheap cuts of meat slow cooked - pulled pork with beans and cheese on top = nom nom

stews : beef, veg, more beef, more veg - stick in oven ignore till you are drooling then stuff yourself

lunches : chicken, eggs, fish, beans, nuts, seeds

admits to being a carb fan but deeply into high protein the more I read

More protein, lots of veg. A palmful of protein at each meal ideally. Walk 5 miles a day quickly

Loads of protein, loads of veg, high fat stuff, nuts, avocado, yoghurt, cheese, Salmon, pork chops, steak, meat on the bone. Nut butter.

I eat pulses as well, loads of chick peas, lentils and also oats. Cut out the crap white carbs and white sugar, its totally toxic.

You'll feel awesome after a week, and not hungry!

As the others have said, my experience is that you have to commit 100% to it with no straying off the low carb path for it to work.

I lost a stone very quickly low carbing two years ago but most of the weight is back on again and I just can't get in the right frame if mind to do it again.

The minute you start eating carbs again, even in small amounts the weight piles back on again and some I'm afraid. It really is not a quick fix diet plus I developed gallstones afterwards, which my GP said could be coincidence or due to the high fat nature of the diet.

I low carbed with a group of six and none of us stuck to it long term although we all lost weight initially.
