NotFatEnough for NHS weight loss clinic

Name changed as I feel so stupid.

Sitting in my GP surgery, I saw an advert for a Specialist Weight Loss clinic. Run by the NHS, a multi discipline service; dietitian, psychologist, physio etc. My BMI was 37, I have high blood pressure and gall stones so I plucked up courage and asked my GP for a referral, she readily agreed.

A few weeks further on, I had my appointment today. It was going really well, -" we can do this for you/we can do that for you". Finally at the end of the appointment I was weighed. My BMI was "only" 34 as I have lost weight recently due to gall stone problems which means I can't eat much and I am waiting for surgery. I was abruptly told that the clinic would not be able to help me but she would at least refer me to a dietician.

I feel devastated I have only lost weight because I am sick. The underlying problems are still there. I finally plucked up courage to ask for help and it was thrown back in my face.

Just wanted to vent because I feel so upset and frustrated. The media and Govt keep going on about how the obesity crisis, yet when someone seeks help they are told they can't have it. I am fucking furious!

Are you not obese? Or do they only help morbidly obese? They will have guidelines to follow.

Are you sure you don't just fall in the overweight category?

BMI over 30 is obese. That's a bit shit OP :( it's like you're not fat enough for help but still have a way to go to be "normal" (I too have a BMI of 34)

Could you go back to your GP and ask what to do next?

Well 3 weeks ago my BMI was 37 it is now 34.something. If it was 35 they would still treat me but it is just under that. The point is I have only lost weight due to sickness. I think the morbid obese category must start at 35 with associated health problems. I am definitely obese!

Thanks. I was told I needed to see the psychologist and also the dietitian and the physio. But then as I was a pound or so too light most of that help is no longer available. Seems bizarre as I am still borderline.
