Week 7 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Where We Get Tough!(450 Posts)
Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness
This week sees the start of Ubercamp. This is entirely optional, by the way!
The idea is that we have three very strict days, keeping our carbs under 20g each day and consuming no dairy.
If you want to take part, I have put together three days' worth of meals as a guide - one which includes eggs and one which is an egg-free plan for those of you who don't like eggs. I'll also do one today which is purely fish-based.
As well as the meal plans, I've also written shopping lists and some recipes, where necessary, and the lovely Willie has put these on the spreadsheet - just look at the tabs at the bottom.
BIWI, Helmanns Garlic Mayo is 1.0g carbs per tbsp.
So this evening I made a chocolate muffin in a minute. My god, it was absolutely disgusting. I have totally learnt my lesson

Half - have you done the 3 days already? That's great, to lose 3lbs -well done!
Jake - what is the carb count per 100g? 1g per tablespoon sounds a lot.
Jake - per tablespoon that is really high; best avoided I think!

Welcome Jake this way of eating is brilliant. Mayo carb counts can vary quite a lot and garlic (and garlic powders and flavourings) tend to make them on the higher side. There's a list somewhere of the lower-carb mayos, I'll see if I can hunt it out.
Life got in the way of ubercamp yesterday (unexpected meal out) but I've stayed off the dairy.
My ubercamp day turned out not to be yesterday, for various reasons, but:
- it was a low carb day
- it was an alcohol-free day!
- I went for my 2nd run of week 3 C25K
Partly thrown off course by discovering that the chicken thighs I had bought were past their sell-by date and smelt a bit whiffy.
So I'm going to do the rest of this week generally Bootcamping and then do ubercamp on Monday.
I've also not got on the scales for a while, so will have to brave that. Friday is going to be my day of reckoning.
Well done to the big losers who have über camped it this week. Fantastic results! I might give it a go in a couple of weeks as a last final push before the wedding. I still have no sense of taste or smell after being ill. It's been 9 days now. At what point should I think about going to the doc??
Can't remember who was asking about garlic mayo, but I always make my own, it's so much nicer and tastes like proper aioli you get in Spain.
Off on my hen party tomorrow morning. Excited but also a bit nervous as I have no idea what they have in store for me! I've requested low carb snacks, etc and will pick low carb options when we eat out. But there's still the booze, eeek!! I'll see on Monday how bad the damage is!!
Well done on your losses, very impressive!!! I have really struggled this week. I turned 33 on Sat and so far my 34th year has been a disaster.
My Dad who lives 3,000 miles away from me has had an unexpected operation and it's a miracle he survived it. Unfortunately he still needs extra oxygen and is in intensive care. My 4 year old has an inflamed gum and is in a very bad mood because of pain and general half term boredom. My 10 week old DS is going through another wake-every-hour stage so I am not getting much sleep. As for me, I have been living off pain killers for the last couple of days because of a tooth needing a root canal. The painkillers have irritated the lining of my stomach so now almost any food makes me feel nauseous.
On top of that I am losing faith not in this woe, but in my body's ability to lose weight - I have been up and down +/-2lb for more than a month now. I have been exercising like a maniac for the last two weeks(Jillian Michaels would be so proud). And I understand that the scales can be deceptive, but I do measure myself and there is no movement there either. There is obviously something I am not doing right, but I wish I knew what.
I am severely overweight and have at least 50lb to lose.We have finally decided to get married and even though we will not have a big wedding, I just cannot live with the thought of being size 16 i currently am on my wedding day. So I have decided for myself that i will give it another 3 months of lc and exercise. If there is no positive movement I will go for a gastric bypass. As horrible as it sounds I am beginning to think that is my only option.
Sorry, I seem to only appear here to moan, but between trying to be strong for my Mum, trying to be a fun Mum for my DS this week and my DP working late I feel like I am going insane. Please feel free to ignore me for now, writing this is therapeutic, but I really don't want to get anyone down
Well done uber campers! My efforts at uber camp detailed as I went out for supper in tues and was utterly exhausted yest so needed a disco nap at my desk (have my own office so noone knew). I have cut the dairy and upped the water though so am feeling optimistic.
Right off out with kids for breakfast and then to battersea dogs home. Kids desperate to look at puppy. I am stoically resisting.

Oh my goodness, Anaisa - what a tough time you are having of it.
Please keep writing here, this is what we are here for!
- being under stress causes inflammation in the body, which can prevent weight loss; obviously very little you can do at the moment about the situation that you are in, but try (!) to stop stressing about your weight for the moment
- painkillers can also impact on your weight, especially ibuprofen. Obviously you're not going to stop taking those, so again, stop worrying about your weight at the moment. But do make sure that you get to the dentist/have some dental treatment as soon as you can, so that this is sorted for you!
- exercise is good for you in a general sense, but isn't necessarily something that helps weight loss. For three reasons. First, expending more energy makes you more hungry, and you can end up eating more food. Second, you are putting more stress on your body (and given that you have used the expression 'exercising like a maniac' I'm guessing that this is quite a lot of stress). See above for issues re stress! And third, exercise builds muscle, which weighs more than fat. So again, you can afford to relax a bit - you can still lose weight without exercise. I've read figures that suggest that weight loss is 85% diet and 15% diet. If you add into that the likely gain that can come from exercise, you can see why it's not necessarily the be all and end all for weight loss
- lack of sleep is another stress factor - see points above for the impact that stress has on weight loss ...
Your obvious focus at the moment has to be getting through the situation that you are in. You don't need to add the stress of weight loss on to this at the moment. You need to concentrate on looking after yourself. You have a new baby and you are bound to be knackered! Is your DP helping you out enough? Are you making sure that you rest as much as possible? It's very easy to get into the situation where you feel you have to be superwoman - but that isn't being kind to yourself.
And finally, eating properly is going to help here. I don't necessarily mean Bootcamping - that could well just be too much extra pressure for you at the moment. But avoiding processed, refined, easily accessible carbs is a key thing, as well as eating lots of fresh and unprocessed foods - including plenty of veg and salad. And drinking lots of water.
How has your diet been generally?
When is your wedding going to be? If you've given yourself three months to lose some weight this suggests that it's a while away and that you do have time to get back into active weight loss when your immediate stresses are removed.
I hope this helps a little bit! Try and stop stressing about the weight, rest as much as you can, get your DP to help out (even?) more, and eat well.
Oh BIWI, thank you so much for being so kind! Life really can be testing sometimes. I guess thats how we learn to appreciate all the good things that happen to us.
DP is helping as much as he can, but he is running his own business, which has had a few problems recently so he needs to put in the hours. As much as I would love for him to be at home more, its not proving very easy at the moment.
I have a dentist appointment tomorrow, so hopefully at least that will be sorted out.
I guess I would love to use the weight loss/exercise as a kind of escape from real life. And to a degree it is working as it distracts me from thinking too much. I just wish this damn weight would start moving.
My diet has been very good up until last week, mostly meat/veg plus a bit of dairy. I am enjoying this woe and thankfully am at home so I find time to experiment with different recipes. I dont drink and havent been eating any berries, but I do have an occasional handful of pine nuts or almonds. As far as dairy goes I do have Greek yoghurt and Ricotta with a bit of coco for breakfast.
Water thats probably where I am falling down big time. I am definitely not drinking enough must try harder on this front.
The wedding will be in august, so yes, still quite a bit of time to sort myself out.
Then you will be fine. Honestly!
I think you just need to take some of the pressure off yourself.
Exercise is definitely good from the perspective of 'me-time' - just don't overdo it or expect too much from it.
Re dairy - yoghurt is great; keep an eye on the rest of it as it can be poorly tolerated and impede weight loss.
What about fat? Have you been eating plenty of it? This will also help you with your energy levels.
And definitely the water!

Have loads of prawns to go with the avocado too.
Just need to look at salad dressings regarding carbs as Garlic Mayo is obviously out of the question.
So it's less than 100g of Carbs a day....the veg food list on the Low Carb pages is excellent...lots of lovely veg there.
I can have 1tbsp of Mayo for 1g of carbs on my prawns but make up a low or zero carbs dressing for salad?
I can have cream in sensible quantities but not overdo it? Not sure I'll bother with cream tbh.

Drink plenty of water....which is no problem.
Can't wait to start now.....am eating out tonight but no problem.....will use today as a trial and jump right in tomorrow.
Jake, buy the lowest carb mayo you can find and crush a little fresh garlic into it. The fresh has a much stronger taste and so you need less and so fewer carbs. Garlic, Thai fish sauce and a bit of parmesan added to mayo makes a damn good Caeser type dressing.
Jake , not 100g carbs per day. Between 20-30g per day.
I would find the ff mayo, add crushed garlic and a little Worcester sauce and mix with prawns for the avocado.

i make up a quick vinaigrette (quantities do not need to be exact):
2tsp dijon mustard
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
4tbsp extra virgin olive oil
dried herbes de provence (optional)
put in a clean empty jar, put on the lid, shake and use as much as you need. it will keep happily on the side for a few weeks but this never usually lasts me longer than 4-5 days
Been mega busy but just wanted to make clear what I wrote a few pages back - when I said this week was a write-offf, I only meant weight loss wise, not that I was going to carb over-load! I know I will eat too many carbs this weekend, so that my weight may go up a little or sts, thats all I meant Not that I was going to cheat all week! Im really sorry that it came across that way. Off to read the rest of the thread now!
i saw these in sainsbury's this morning, also in the co-op when i popped in at lunchtime - sticks of cheese wrapped in ham/salami (some other things too but they look like they might have a sugary coating)
obviously processed, and you could easily make the same thing for yourself with a packet of cheese and a packet of ham/salami, but less than 1g carb per serving and if you were on the go they might be a good option
disclaimer: i haven't bought or tried them so they might be vile!
