Not sure where to put this - can an alcoholic low carb?

PLEASE don't have a go at me for being an alcoholic. It's just recently I've been able to accept that I am one. I want to and will work on it but there are lots of other things I need to work on too and one of them is my weight.

In the past low-carbing has worked well for me and the foods etc are in line with what I enjoy eating. Plus calorie-counting diets bit pointless as god knows how many calories I drink in alcohol.

But I know alcohol is essentially a carb, especially my drink of choice (wine); I don't really want to switch to spirits given my alcoholism. So is there no point low-carbing foodwise if the alcohol will push me over?

I think you may be in danger of trying to 'fix yourself' all in one go. I would imagine that eating healthily and doing regular exercise would be the best way to start looking after yourself but until you eat fewer calories than you burn you will not lose weight.

Well done for admitting your problem, it's an amazing step to have taken. I hope you manage to get the help you need.

On the basis that the booze is giving you all the carbs and sugars you will ever need,
see if you can go for a high protein, low fat, mega fruit and veg diet.

Can you balance that with no booze before a certain time of day - during which you clear headedly organise your meals so that you eat well even once several sheets to the wind?

And make sure you only shop before drinking - so that what is in your cupboards during the munchies stage will do no more harm.

Last night I bumped into an old friend who was a 3 bottles of vodka a day man for 20 years, and has been dry for 15 years.
He was a bloody good laugh and after a while remembered my name.

T'was good to see him and inspires me to want to support you.

Good luck with your diet and good luck with giving up alcohol - you can do it.

Low carbing would be a bad idea for you as if you go into ketosis, drinking can be fairly risky!

Google "dangers of drinking in ketosis".

Best of luck :-)

Just googled

paleohacks.com/questions/84530/drinking-booze-while-in-ketosis-is-it-dangerous#axzz2DHXFVeF4

Seems people have got a bit confused between ketosis - normal fat burning mode we all go into to burn body fat - often over night when we aren't aware and ketoacidosis - potentially life threatening condition for diabetics.
