Couch to 5k: whether you're picking up the pace or just starting the race

Through rain and snow and skies of grey
We will keep running the C25K
Though lack of sleep and time do test us
We wil not let excuses best us
For 2012 will be the year
For weight loss, fitness and good cheer
Nine weeks of running isn't that long
So come on ladies, get those running shoes on!

Welcome to all runners, joggers, speed walkers and waddlers! All levels of fitness are welcome here on the Couch to 5k support thread. For more information see the NHS website

I am currently due to do week 7 run 3, but having an enforced break due to a sprained ankle. Please come and share your stories here whether you are just beginning or have already finished the couch to 5k programme - keep me motivated during my break!

Marks place.

I'm not doing the nhs one, slightly different c25k program in the form of an iPhone app instead, but broadly the same thing.

Wow! arabellacaterpillar that's great going!!

I have completed the c25k plan and am continuing to run every other day hoping to increase the pace and therefore actually get to 5K!! My best so far is 4.55K in 40 mins, first 5 I usually only cover 0.2-0.4K as I'm trailing after my dog doing her thing :)

Can I ask you a question? I should be starting week 2 tomorrow, BUT I didn't manage to run all my runs on W1R1 Blush so should I do week 1 once more?

Report
ShirleyKnot · 08/03/2012 20:41

And what I meant by that was that on W1R1 I literally only did 5/8 of the running parts.

bigbadbarry · 08/03/2012 20:45

Shirley What did you do for R2 and 3?

Report
ShirleyKnot · 08/03/2012 20:46

I managed 7/8 on R2 and 8/8 on R3. Hideous R3 on treadmill in gym though - wanted to cry!

Am marking my place.

Currently on run 2 of week 2.

I got up to 5k last year, then got up the duff, had to stop running at 9 weeks as I had a bleed, then sat on the sofa for a good few months eating, growing a baby, had a baby and now bf and am just getting back on it! I had a CS so a bit concerned about over doing it as only 11 weeks post section but not had any problems so far.

COCKadoodledooo · 08/03/2012 20:53

I really want to do this - but how the chuff do you fit it in to your schedule??

I have a 2yo and an 8yo. I work 3 days a week which means leaving the house on those days by 8am and not getting home until well after 6. The only gym nearby has no creche and I haven't got anyone to have dc2 when I'm not at work. Dh is always gone before the kids get up (he leaves by 7am).

Realistically how much time does it take up?

8.2 done and I found a running partner today - another mum with baby in stroller. We only covered 3.5k though !

doodle I run 3 times a week. I have 3 DS and just make it a priority I guess. Right now I run with yds in stroller, or go to the gym late in the evening, or at the weekend outside on my own. I need it like I need food and oxygen!

Good luck :)

Did it. Managed W7R1 on a Thursday night as well! I slowed my pace a bit which meant 3.3k inc the walk so only ran 2.8k, but am pleased nonetheless as I nearly wimped out. doodle the only way I can do it is by me and DH having 2 gym sessions a week each. I go after work on Thursday and Saturday afternoon. DH does Tuesday pm and Sunday morning. They are almost set in stone as 'our time', if we didn't earmark the time we wouldn't do it. We both work FT and have two DC aged 2 and 6. Most nights one of us isn't home till gone 7, and that includes DS1 with Beavers and swimming!

oh and I give myself 1.5 - 2 hours to get to the gym, run, shower and get home

Shirley I went with the attitude that if I completed the third run of the week, I could go onto the following week.

Doodle my DH makes it a lot easier for me by taking ds for the evening. I run at about 8-8:30pm three times a week, each run is about 35 minutes, running kit is in a carrier bag so no sorting out clothes etc to slow me down. I would put aside 50 minutes in all to get ready, run and return, then quick shower.

If you have a routine, stick to it. It helps a lot.

COCKadoodledooo I run when I've finished work (usually 6) just around the streets so the moment I step out of the door I've started. I can't run on a full stomach so we eat when I get back but I could put mine aside and go later. I have 2 ds's 1 and 4yo and dh is usually home between 5.30 and 6, he's been very supportive which helps a lot!! I don't shower when I get home just because of time so literally need 40 minutes plus 2 mins to get my gear on.
