My dp proposed today! I am beside myself I'm so happy! grin

We don't really want a long engagement as we've been together for quite a while already and feel it would be pointless.

I just wondered if any of you have married in Cardiff or the Vale and could talk to me about the venue you chose?

Thanks smile

DFs got married in Cardiff city hall itself.

DuelingFanjo Sat 07-Sep-13 18:15:44

We used the Masonic hall because it was cheap as chips. Other places are the vale hotel, I think there's somewhere fled cnd lodge (?), the new house country hotel in thorn hill. Tredegar house in Newport.

We got married in the St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay. It was AWESOME!

You get your own wedding planner and the bridal suite is thrown in (and their top suites are amazing!)

Food was great, service was fantastic. We have really lovely memories of our day.

I was totally against the idea of a classic cars at a country house, giant flowing frock princess-for-the-day wedding (I'm not at all knocking people going for that, but it just wasn't us).

St David's was modern and classy and everything we wanted. Was 6 years ago now so I don't know what may have changed, but we really loved our day.

DuelingFanjo Sat 07-Sep-13 18:16:37

That should be Canada lodge

MikeLitoris Sat 07-Sep-13 18:18:30

canada lodge is stunning.

It really depends on budget. Some of the rooms in the city hall are lovely.

CMOTDibbler Sat 07-Sep-13 18:20:50

We got married in the Park Hotel on Queens Street which was fab. I've been to weddings at City Hall (though I've been to conferences there more recently where the food wasn't v good), and St Davids (lovely, but as a guest, I was disappointed by the bedrooms tbh).

If I got married now, I'd love to get married at St Fagans

MikeLitoris Sat 07-Sep-13 18:22:10

I was at a wedding at celtic manor last year. That was lovely but not as good as canada lodge.

What about clearwell castle in the forest of dean. That would have been my choice but xp got married there first angry

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 08-Sep-13 09:36:22

These are all great suggestions, thank you!

I'm not really sure what kind of budget we're looking at just yet.

Am very excited!

Canada Lodge is booked for every Saturday for the next year <weeps>

Friday is doable for a wedding date isn't it?

dinahthecat Wed 11-Sep-13 20:27:43

We're getting married at Canada Lodge in 2014! Eeee. :D

You can get married on Saturdays in Canada Lodge in:

Oct 2013
Nov 2013
Dec 2013
Jan 2014
Feb 2014
Mar 2014
Oct 2014 onwards

You could also book Good Friday - 18 April 2014 - or Easter Monday - 21 April 2014. Probably wouldn't recommend either of these dates if you want a church wedding though!

Early May bank holiday 5 May 2014 and spring bank holiday 26 May 2014 are also free but unfortunately the Sundays beforehand are both taken. The same goes for summer bank holiday 25 August 2014.

Good luck and very many congratulations!

We also looked at Pencoed House Estate. It is gorgeous, incredibly popular, and a bit pricey! We thought it'd make a great place for a winter wedding.

Also on our list (although we didn't look at them) were:
Vale Hotel
St David's Hotel
De Courcey's
New Country House Hotel
Glyndwr Vineyard (I emailed back and forth with them - they were really nice but it just worked out a bit more expensive than we had budgeted with the marquee hire)
St Fagans
Fonmon Castle

Was veeeery tempted to get married at Nash Point Lighthouse but you are pretty restricted for numbers.

Have a look at cwtchthebride.com for inspiration and other suggestions!

I was recently told the Atlantic College do weddings.

Alisvolatpropiis Wed 11-Sep-13 20:45:06

Thanks again!

Probably looking at a week day wedding to keep costs down (romantic).

I spotted de Courceys the other day and like the look of it, though have yet to visit.

Will look at the all the recommended places. The only place I know for sure I don't want is St David's Hotel, it's beautiful but won't fit the kind of look I want (not a bridezilla honest!)

Did email Babinton House for a costs estimate. Relieved it and laughed. Not really within our budget, lovely though it is!

DuelingFanjo Wed 11-Sep-13 20:48:37

Someone I know got married in st David's hotel and ended up getting a huge refund because it was so bad. Might have changed since then though.

Mosschops30 Wed 11-Sep-13 20:55:44

My friends cater for Canada Lodge and Pencoed House Estate, i have only heard good things about both venues.

Can i recommend Kapow Photography

ToffeePenny Wed 11-Sep-13 20:57:50

I went to one at Castell Coch. It was wonderful.

ToffeePenny Wed 11-Sep-13 21:01:22

Reception at Miskin Manor afterwards was very lovely too.

lookingforbaubles Wed 11-Sep-13 21:02:20

ive been to a wedding in the bear hotel in cowbridge, it was lovely -- they had the wedding, afternoon tea and evening do

woundbobbin Wed 11-Sep-13 21:03:45

A close friend of mine got married at fonmon castle it was a brilliant day I was involved in a bit of the planning and found the people who own the venue really helpful which is important IMO

BikeRunSki Wed 11-Sep-13 21:07:54

I would love to get married at Castel Coch. It would be like being a,Disney princess.

We went to a lovely wedding at a hotel bear Bridgend, but can' t remember what it was called.

MikeLitoris Wed 11-Sep-13 22:28:38

I saw pictures from a wedding in De Corceys recently. Looks lovely.

Julezboo Wed 11-Sep-13 22:58:48

MabelFigworthy Wed 11-Sep-13 23:16:11

Our reception was at West House Country Hotel. It was fab! We had a barn dance! grin It'd be a bit cosy for a large wedding but we had a marquee as well.

MabelFigworthy Wed 11-Sep-13 23:18:31

My friends had their reception at The Bear in Cowbridge. It was nice, ours was nicer! wink <Biased>

BikeRunSki Thu 12-Sep-13 20:34:02

The place where Julezboo got married is the place I mentioned above .about lovely wedding near Bridgend

Thank you for all these suggestions! Very exciting having all these places recommended, dp is going to love it when I insist we must see them all! grin

Have found dream dress. Obviously it does not fall anywhere near our budget. <cries>

happylass Sun 15-Sep-13 22:08:24

We are getting married in Pencoed House next August. Also looked at Canada Lodge which was lovely but they didn't have any dates available that suited us (I'm a teacher). Miskin Manor is also lovely and only just outside Cardiff.

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 15-Sep-13 22:33:37

Thank you!

I went to the (terrifying) wedding fair in Cardiff City Hall today. Tried on my first dress sneakily whilst the show was going on.

De Courcey's Manor and Pencoed House got glowing reviews from the photographers etc.

Those are my favourite two.

Next week we visit!

happylass Mon 16-Sep-13 07:31:51

I was at City Hall yesterday too! Not been to De Courceys but heard lovely things. We are getting married on a Monday at Pencoed house as they didn't have any Friday, Saturday or Sunday dates in the school holidays and we loved it so much we were prepared to compromise. They offer a package for weekday weddings which is a lot cheaper. Happy venue hunting!

Needanewsofa Mon 16-Sep-13 07:41:45

We got married at the Celtic Manor 12 years ago, primarily because I was born there when it was the Lydia Baynon maternity home. I also had my first silver service job there at 15 years old, so imagine my surprise when our wedding planner handed us over to the event manager on the day and it was my supervisor from all those years earlier!!!

It wasn't very expensive, even for 12 years ago, as the total hotel bill for 80 day guests and 150 evening came to less than £5,000!!!!! I looked at the costs again recently, just curious, and nearly had a coronary!

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 16-Sep-13 19:51:52

happylass well that's given me an idea about how likely a Friday wedding is! grin

I looked at the Pen Coed House package and was really impressed. Calling them to book a viewing as soon as smile

Chocolatehunter Wed 18-Sep-13 22:54:39

I recently got married in Clearwell. castle which is an hour away from Cardiff. It's gorgeous and the people who work there cannot do enough. They do £5k deals where all the rooms in the castle, the wedding and the following morning is all included. Look them up, they were brilliant with us

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 22-Sep-13 16:34:21

Spanner in the works - very few August dates next year.

The wedding has to fall in with a school holiday due to my dp's job.

Visited the Bear Hotel in Cowbridge yesterday. It was nice. They have August dates next year. We were pretty happy with it.

Went to Pencoed House today. We knew they didn't have any August dates but went along to have a look not least to see how much we really liked the venue yesterday.

We didn't like the venue yesterday it turns out. Both of us were absolutely blown away by Pencoed House. We've got a date on hold for May half term next year. My dp has already raised issues with the fact our honeymoon would be more of a mini moon and that that time of year is v busy for him at work (whereas anytime can be for me) and main concern is he's worried that "his guests" won't come unless he makes it as easy as humanly possible for them. And even then they might not.

Any advice for me ladies?

I considered putting this in AIBU then realised I'd probably get torn a new one and returned to this thread, you've all been so nice smile

Alisvolatpropiis Sun 22-Sep-13 16:34:58

*didn't like it enough even.

happylass Tue 24-Sep-13 16:02:19

So glad you loved Pencoed House Alisvola grin.
We are having a Monday wedding there and I umm and ahhhd about it being a Monday and the fact that that may put people off coming. But decided to just go with my heart in the end as my Mum pointed out that we are doing it for us and not for anyone else. As soon as we booked everyone was really positive and couldn't wait to book the time off work to come and we've since sent out save the dates and no-one seems bothered by the fact it's a Monday. We are also just having an 11 night honeymoon and coming back the night before school starts back which, in a perfect world, I wouldn't have. But I guess you can't have everything and its a case of deciding what your priorities are. For us it was important to get married next year in Pencoed House so we arranged that the best we could. I think you should decide what matters most to you both and just go with it! Good luck.

Blockette Tue 24-Sep-13 16:49:17

did you book yet?

I got married in the New House - in the marquee, I obviously liked it, but love Canada lodge too DH's friends are getting married there next year and I'm quite jealous ...

Alisvolatpropiis Tue 24-Sep-13 20:52:02

It looks like city hall is all we can do. My parents have voiced serious issues that have offended me deeply. I wouldn't take their money now even if they offered it. My dp's parents are sadly deceased.

I'm sure it will still be a lovely day, just different to what we initially had in mind.
