I'm after people's honest opinions of themed weddings. Have you been to any that were great/awful?

I want my wedding to be themed. Subtley, not OTT. Like you would have to be looking carefully to spot it. Thoughts?

I think it depends on the theme and how it is done.

I've been to weddings where there was a subtle theme that was important to the couple (e.g a sport, the 1940s) and it was lovely.

.....or do you mean those bonkers ones where the bride and groom dress up like star wars characters Grin

Depends, if you're asking all your guests to dress up, wear a particular 'look' or a certain colour I think it's a bit of a pain in the hole. If not then bash on.

Good lord! No dressing up! Grin That would be a pain for everyone. The guests would not be required to participate in anything unusual or any extra prep, etc.

Go for broke or go home! Half themed weddings just feel like they haven't bothered but really themed (even a little cheesy) are great fun

Depends what the theme is but most people put some kind of personal theme into their wedding day :)

I recently went to a themed wedding and didn't know I had until I saw Facebook posts afterwards saying it was! It was a movies-themed wedding and afterwards I realised that the props, favours and music all fitted, but if was just good fun on the day.

So long as your guests don't have to do any work / feel out of their comfort zones to participate in the theme then go for it!

Mine was themed on the film Up. But it was subtle.
Balloon decorations, men in the bridal party had bottle top badges, I had a brooch of the house on my bouquet and we walked out of the church to the "Married Life" tune.

We need to know what it is before we can really comment. For example, I have threatened to have a Betty Boop/Elvis dress code, and get married in Vegas in revenge for all the special snowflake weddings we have had inflicted on, but I appreciate the I may BU Grin

My theme is a bit revealing if anyone here knows me but it's a well loved book.

Why does a wedding need a theme? It's a wedding; that's the theme...
Theming it around your favourite book is bizarre.

Does depend on what you are thinking of
Years ago dh went to one (I was invited, but declined as it was on my due date....) which was a big themed thing. She spent SO much time sorting all the detail, but forgot about the relationship, and they split up after less than a year, despite having lived together for years beforehand - it just became the focus of her life.
I went to one recently though, where the cake, and the table 'names' were all themed around a hobby they both spent time on together - everyone thought it was a lovely personal touch.
I have been to a couple where it had to be pointed out to me - so then it seemed like a lot of effort, which guests didn't actually even notice.

so, I guess it depends.

I'm not letting it take over. The main purpose of my wedding is to marry my amazing DP but I have seen some things I like that are based on the theme and thought it would be nice. I was thinking table names and bowls of themed sweets on the tables. Invitations and save the dates... Etc.

Naff if you expect guests to dress up to suit it.

Most people have some sort of theme, even if it's only "red roses" or "silver and lilac colours"

Sweets are a lot of people's idea of hell. Seems to be a new trend taking over, too, pushing sweets on guests instead of more real food.

Why do you need a theme? Theming has only become a thing since weddings became really commercialised - it's just a way of getting you to part with more money. Every wedding is unique because of the people getting married.

Themes are generally meh IMO. If it's that subtle why do it at all? Is it just a test to see which of your relatives and friends can work it out? Does it have a special significance to you and your OH? As a guest the most memorable parts of a wedding are whether the B&G were happy and whether the food and company were good. All the other elements of a wedding such as flowers, photography, decor, themes, favours, dresses, photobooths etc are generally forgettable unless they're memorable for the wrong reasons.

What is your theme, then?

I reckon it's Harry Potter and Bertie Botts every flavour beans.

Or...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Or...

Alice in Wonderland, 'eat me' labels on the sweets.

ImOnMyTumbleTap · 31/07/2016 17:29

The sweets wouldn't be instead of actual food. The theme is something we both like a lot and would be for us more than the guests. I would make a lot of the things myself to be honest.

But why? I happen to like giraffes.
I can't imagine if I was organising my wedding today; deciding to put little giraffes all over the tables, so all the guests can say"ah, look at all the little giraffes, that'll be because Flgging likes them"...
And then what? It's ridiculously wanky and nobody really gives a shit anyway, why should they?
