Engagement ring- does it come to bed?

JessieMcJessie · 14/01/2014 11:17

So, we chose the ring together and it arrived yesterday and I have been having fun twiddling it and catching sight of the sparkle every now and again and getting used to how it feels on my finger. But I realised last night that I'm not sure if I should take it off at night for bed. DP says he's never slept with an engaged woman before so he wouldn't know Grin. Kept it on last night but was very conscious of it and a bit uncomfortable. Do you take yours off?

Never take mine off. I love it.

madamecake · 14/01/2014 11:24

Mine hasnt been off since I got engaged 8 years ago! You quickly get used to the feel of it, same with a wedding ring.

I was too scared of losing it to take it off and luckily it has survived dishwashing, swimming etc over the years.

eurochick · 14/01/2014 11:25

Yes, mine comes off at night, as does my wedding ring. They also come off for showers, washing up and food prep. I really only end up wearing them outside the house or when we have visitors.

eurochick · 14/01/2014 11:26

I meant "no" rather than "yes" obviously!

Twinsplusonesurprise · 14/01/2014 11:32

Mine comes off too. Along with any other jewelry (not usually much at all though!) Also comes off for showers, washing up etc too.
Not sure why, just started taking if off at the beginning and still do. It isn't a conventional ring though and is quite old so I wouldn't want anything to happen to it.

Catsmamma · 14/01/2014 11:35

I take mine off, it's antique, unconventional and quite chunky so it would be a nuisance

I generally do wear it all the time out of the house, and i don't take off all jewellery I have bracelets and rings that stay on all the time, but I never wear earrings or necklaces in bed either.

Freetobeme · 14/01/2014 11:39

I always keep my wedding ring on, but I do take off my engagement ring
( and another ring I wear on my right hand) when I shower, wash up etc.

I sleep with my rings on, they don't bother me at all. I tend to lose things and the safest pace for my jewellery is on me!

I think people come in two categories.

People who put jewellery ON for special occasions, or just to go out and who don't just wear it around the house.

People who take jewellery OFF, for a shower etc, for whom wearing jewellery is as natural as wearing clothes.

I fall firmly in the first category. I got engaged a couple of months ago, and this thread has made me realise that I haven't worn the ring for a few days! Eek!
So I take it off for bed, and frequently forget to put it back on!

I have been a bit paranoid today about washing my hands after the loo, it fits perfectly but I don't have big knuckles and I fear it could would easily slide off with a bit of soap. First world problems eh?Wink

Hahahaha Jessie! mine is that the bloody diamond keeps catching my jumpers and pulling the wool.
FFS! The diamonds too big Wink

lynniep · 14/01/2014 12:08

I never take my rings off. I'm not a big jewellery wearer, but it really doesn't occur to me to take my wedding or engagement ring off (I can't at the moment anyway as my fingers are too fat) Dh on the other hand took his wedding ring off after the wedding and never put it on again...

oscarwilde · 14/01/2014 12:27

Never ever take it off to wash your hands in a public loo!

MadIsTheNewNormal · 14/01/2014 12:30

I only ever take mine off for gardening and making pastry.

muppetthecow · 14/01/2014 12:32

All my other jewellery (if I'm wearing any) comes off at night, but my wedding and engagement rings stay on. I think the only time I've taken either of them off since the wedding was when I was pregnant and my hands looked like sausages! I wore them on a chain around my neck then though, so I still didn't really take them off Smile

LittleBearPad · 14/01/2014 12:33

I never take mine off. You get used to it.

AdoraBell · 14/01/2014 12:38

I only ever take mine off to prep raw meat, chicken, fish, that kind of thing. Apart from when my fingers turned into bloody great sausages during pregnancy.

If you do take it off them remember where you've put it. I had a short panic after putting mine on top of a Terry Pratchett paperback, the ones with the fancy designs, searched under the bed, through all the drawers, in the bin, downstairs and in the fridge before I accidentally knocked it off the book onto the floor.

GossamerHailfilter · 14/01/2014 12:40

I havent taken any of my jewellery off in the 7 years I have been married. The last time I took my engagement ring off was my wedding day so that I could get my wedding ring on.

I do take my watch off at night though, or when I am bathing the DC's.

I keep mine on except for washing up and kneading bread. They have a very specific place in the kitchen - their own little dish! - that they go in when I take them off or I will lose them. I'm good at loosing things, and both are of such sentimental value I would be distraught to lose them. They never come off my hand out of the house, for the same reason.

I was on site this morning looking at trial pits (sticking my hand in clay to see how strong it is), and they stayed on for that. I do have them cleaned every year though...

Sparrow8 · 14/01/2014 13:00

I never take mine off. The only time my engagement and wedding ring have come off was when I had to sit in with my Dd having an MRI.

TheProsAndConsOfHitchhiking · 14/01/2014 13:01

I never take mine off.

JessieMcJessie · 14/01/2014 14:32

Looks like the vote is in favour of "never". LOL at the clay pits. I do swim in the sea a lot and might be a bit scared of losing it underwater, but the reality is that it's more likely to get lost if I take it off...can you get any sort of elastic band type thing to make them less likely to slide off I wonder (just for swimming, not for all the time).

Jessie

Get a slightly smaller ring for swimming and just put it on after your engagement ring.

WeddingComingUp · 15/01/2014 23:39

Mine stays on constantly.

I only take it off for something really messy - making pastry/putting fake tan on...the only two examples I can think of!

MsAspreyDiamonds · 20/01/2014 15:13

I lost mine whilst on holiday, I took it off for a shower on our last day & then forgot to put it back on again so left it behind. My mother was not impressed Blush & was more upset than my dh who sweetly offered to buy me another.
