Do you number the top table? I'm thinking in the table plan and on table place number holders?

Totally up to you. I probably would, personally, but I think it's fine if you just want to call it the "Bride and Groom's table" or similar and then just number the others from 1.

we did. our tables were numbered by significant years..so the top table was the year we married; the table with work colleagues on was year we met as we all worked together; our families sat on our birth years etc...

We didn't number the top table; on the table plan it was labelled as Top Table, and the others numbered 1-8. The eight tables had a card in a holder with the relevant number, but we didn't bother with putting a card on the top table (easily identified without one - different shape to the others).

If you are having a top table I wouldn't as it can be identified by shape.
We aren't having a top table, ours will be the same shape so we will be table 1.

We are naming our tables after places we've been on holiday to together. Our top table will be named after the island that we've booked for our honeymoon.
