Potentially exciting weather tonight!

(185 Posts)

TORRO have issued a tornado watch for central and southern England and Wales.

Which is quite a large area really. Tornado watches mean that the expected weather in conducive to tornadogenisis rather than they are expected but nevertheless, it could be interesting smile hail, thunder and severe gusts are also possible.

PseudoBadger Sat 19-Oct-13 20:02:53

I saw this on Facebook; I'm guessing it's the band that Met Office has coming across the area in the early hours?

turkeyboots Sat 19-Oct-13 20:03:26

We've just had some feaky weather in the East Midlands.

Torrential rain came from nowhere with thunder and lighting and left behind a golden orange sky.

I was in the bath so couldn't see much through the fristed window but heard it and saw the sky change colour.

It is badger smile

bundaberg Sat 19-Oct-13 20:11:49

oh goodness!

any idea how long it'll last?

am planning a trip to legoland on either mon or tues, but don't want to get hailed on grin

The unsettled weather looks likely to last all week, Tuesday I think shows more potential for storms again than Monday.

That's related to a band just exiting the UK Edwina, the next lot is coming in from the west.

bundaberg Sat 19-Oct-13 20:41:55

oh no! looks like legoland will be off again. blimmin weather! lol

BooItTooJulia Sat 19-Oct-13 20:43:32

Watching with interest. Based in West Midlands!

OYBBK I am a huge fan and love seeing and reading your threads. Tornado! I quite like a bit of extreme (but not too extreme) weather. Can you "do" Europe too or do you tend to stick to the UK?

BuzzardBirdBloodBath Sat 19-Oct-13 20:46:12

If you are on FB Boo go onto Midland Storm Chasers (based in Bridgnorth). They give excellent weather reports and post weather maps etc. Very interesting stuff.

MoreThanWords Sat 19-Oct-13 20:46:39

West Mids here too - had that huge downpour just as Tesco arrived with some very soggy shopping! There was a fabulous rainbow afterwards though

Looking forward to a good storm in the early hours smile ⚡️⚡️⚡️

CatAmongThePigeons Sat 19-Oct-13 20:46:53

The map showed that the sw could be affected, which is exciting- if it's out over the sea. It is very mild and calm here atm.

BooItTooJulia Sat 19-Oct-13 20:48:44

Oooh, will do Buzzard, thanks!

TheGonnagle Sat 19-Oct-13 20:53:09

We had a mahoosive cloud burst at about 5.30 after a beautiful, warm day. A large clap of thunder about 8.15 and now the calm before the storm.....
Could do without the tornado please. (West Mids btw)

AnandaTimeIn Sat 19-Oct-13 20:57:15

We - not UK - had a massive cloud burst after being told it was going to be an unusually mild 5 days to come. hmm

It's full moon and another eclipse. Explains it all grin

ScreamingNaanAndGoryOn Sat 19-Oct-13 20:58:43

It was weird here earlier (north west). Ridiculously warm this afternoon, followed by a mahoooosive thunderstorm.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sat 19-Oct-13 21:04:59

Thanks OYBBK smile

Anything exciting I should look out for tonight where I am (CSE)?

I suppose I'd better bring the bloody climbing plants in (still in very light pots and fall over with a breath of wind) and poor little Ollie Oak - he's still too tiddly to be out in nasty weather!

We've already started half term - sodding typical!!

Makinglists Sat 19-Oct-13 21:18:52

Big flash of lightening and short but heavy rainstorm here in Plymouth about 20 mins ago.

BlackeyedSusan Sat 19-Oct-13 21:20:59

I came to see if anyone else had had thunder and lightning.

we haas some just before 5, in the west midlands. went very dark a couple of claps of thunder, torrential rain and squally winds.

Chipping, you are sitting nicely in the risk area smile good precautions! Let me know if there is any damage!

Thanks for the report makinglists, you are our advance guard!

Blackeyedsusan, you may get more overnight too.

Shinyshoes1 Sat 19-Oct-13 21:26:45

I'm in Essex I'm in the red zone but it's very quiet her and quite mild

Will I get some OYBBK I love a good storm

SheSellsSadShells Sat 19-Oct-13 21:37:38

Waves at MakingLists, in the same place and clocked the torrential rain but not the lightning flash!

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob Sat 19-Oct-13 21:44:54

Ooooo I'm in the south east. I get really exited about big weather.

Can never say for sure shiny, storms aren't predictable in the same way weather fronts are. We can say that storms are pretty likely and some may be severe but we can't pin where exactly they will occur. SE isn't likely to see any action til close to dawn I think.

Perihelion Sat 19-Oct-13 23:04:23

No exciting weather in Edinburgh. Gone warm again though.

I'm in Dorset . It's warm again, no rai .

I forgot where you are perihelion. The warmth, whilst welcome is most odd! Still, you may get your fair share of weather soon enough!

Pete, it's going to be a case of some get big stuff and some none at all. But you are also a good advance guard!

Kahlua4me Sat 19-Oct-13 23:23:53

I am going away on our schools residential trip from Monday.

We are going to the south coast, near Weymouth, so hope the weather is good there. Can't think of anything worse than torrential rain and 90 kids.....

CointreauVersial Sat 19-Oct-13 23:28:35

Diddly squiddly in Surrey.

<presses nose to window looking for lightning>

FunkyBoldRibena Sat 19-Oct-13 23:30:31

How odd...i just said to the OH tonight that it looked like a tornado and the wind was in the willows (I can see a huge willow from my desk)... And I must be close to Edwina's revenge as that's exactly what we had.

Audilover Sat 19-Oct-13 23:30:44

It's pissing it down where we are to the extent that the satellite keeps losing signal.

Funky, if there is any damage that you spot in the am can you pm me please.

Kahlua. I'd take plenty of towels, clothes and whiskey.

FunkyBoldRibena Sat 19-Oct-13 23:51:05

I'll be at the allotment kitten, in the morning!

With wellies funky?

ProphetOfDoom Sat 19-Oct-13 23:57:31

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

NoComet Sat 19-Oct-13 23:57:51

Badkitten, we still have are gazebo up, I don't want a bit of wind, never mind tornadoes, please send them to trash the south East,

gallicgirl Sat 19-Oct-13 23:59:28

Argh was hoping for a bit of dry weather.

Warm and calm in south essex but was very hazy earlier. No chance of seeing over to Kent.

Is it true we're going to have cold winter with snow from November?

BuzzardBirdBloodBath Sun 20-Oct-13 00:59:51

It has just started to throw it down.
No one can predict weather more than 3 days in advance. Newspapers sell papers by making up weird weather warnings every year with no actual basis.

Viviennemary Sun 20-Oct-13 01:05:45

I saw a rainbow at around 6 pm. Haven't seen one for ages.

Woken by heavy rain and it's windy.

And lightning.

And now thunder.

digerd Sun 20-Oct-13 06:25:13

I'm in bed by 10 pm and up about 5.30. I heard nothing here in SE.
It was very mild again at 5pm yesterday. We did have showers afterwards, but no wind.
We have very old pine trees at bottom of garden on other side of the canal. Last storm we had big branches broke and my garden was strewn with bits up to my patio doors.
Don't want my shed roof being ripped off again by plum tree belonging to my neighbour--from hell-- and tripping all the electric sockets . Shed like 10 years agoconfused Shed has sockets for the pond pump.

digerd Sun 20-Oct-13 07:09:47

Just heard a loud whooshing of wind and rain for just a few seconds which happened twice so far. Still too dark to check my shed roof - worried now.

digerd Sun 20-Oct-13 07:19:02

And now a loud rumble of thundershock

GloriaSmud Sun 20-Oct-13 08:36:23

Signing in from a static caravan in Devon where it's been a stormy night here with lots of wind and rain. Stuck my head out the door earlier and it's very mild out.

Great timing Gloria grin

Rain started on and off at 4:30am then we had thunder at first light.

Matilda, was there any damage?

KatyPutTheCuttleOn Sun 20-Oct-13 08:40:21

Lots of rain and a lovely double rainbow (and a science lesson as the DCs wanted to know about triple rainbows) but not much wind.

JourneyThroughLife Sun 20-Oct-13 08:46:11

We had a huge thunderstorm at around 8am this morning and now torrential rain..... The newsman said "showers" but it doesn't look like that here....

curlew Sun 20-Oct-13 08:49:13

Raining but boring here in Kent. Ds up and panicking because football was cancelled last week because of a waterlogged pitch and he's so scared it's going to happen again today sad

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall Sun 20-Oct-13 08:58:20

We had thunder last night. I am in the NE. Wasn't expecting it to get here.

Just seen a report on FB about wintery showers up north today and this week. Is that right OYBBK?

There was a thunderstorm about 5-6am in Gosport it woke my little one she creeped in beside me. I am hoping that the weather is ok for the times I cycle to and from work (we don't have a car) I will really freak out if I'm ever caught out cycling In that weather sad

FunkyBoldRibena Sun 20-Oct-13 09:26:14

With wellies funky?

Nope - walking boots.

Rain off and on here; so are delaying lottie til it clears up a little.

My bible for rain planning

No thunder that I heard last night. I am very central.
The wind and rain about 1am was amazing though. Thought the windows were going to blow in.

It actually looks like above average temps til later on in the week up in the north. Temps in lowland towns may not go below 10c even at night. Cooling down from Thursday.

I do rate raintoday very much. I reckon it's the best of the commercial sites.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sun 20-Oct-13 10:01:42

OYBBK - blush the neighbours cats keep weeing in/on the pots the plants are in, so I decided they'd just have to stay outside. There was clearly not even the slightest breath of wind here last night as they were still upright and I know how little wind it takes for them to hurl themselves at the ground. It rained but it didn't pour - no thunder etc. It's sunny over here this morning (but I can't open the front door because of the smell of cat pee!! Grrr They're moving in a few days - I hope they take the cats with them!! << Not at all guaranteed)

Digerd - how are things??

What's the forecast for central London for the week?

Wellies and umbrellas or bikinis and flip flop???

Shows how localised storms can be chipping grin you had a near miss.

It's a case of raincoat and flip flops! Warm (for the time of year) and wet with more thunderstorms possible.

Hmm...raincoats and flipflops in London...trendy..

But I'll leave my straighteners at home (more important)

The trendiest people are the ones who are ahead of the game.
<Taps nose wisely>
Just think how proud you will feel when the look catches on and everyone is at it. (Though don't blame yourself for the escalator accidents that ensue)

waikikamookau Sun 20-Oct-13 10:24:02

the sun is shining brightly and the washing is shouting to be done. where is this rain?

All over in showers. Looks like measles on the radar smile if you are in Lincolnshire it looks clear for a little while!

If you've got an ipad raintoday do a great app so you can check the radar before you put it out and then dash in and out as necc.

Cindy34 Sun 20-Oct-13 10:50:22

Big storm in Surrey this morning around 7am but now bright sunshine. Wonder if the local rivers coped with the downpour.

Anyone from Hayling Island? Looks like there was a potential tornadic event this morning.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sun 20-Oct-13 11:45:11

then dash in and out as necc << Ha ha if it goes out, it stays out until it's dry!!

Yes - weird how we missed it last night. It's a little breezy here now and the dark clouds are rolling in. I hope it washes away some of the cat pee!!

Ooohh I hope someone from HI reports in!

I miss living by the sea - I love a proper storm over the sea!

I've started a new thread about the possible tornadic event. If you see anyone on the boards talking about it please can you point them to:
this thread

We have sun here! Weather has been odd for october so not suprised even odder weather is expected!

This is the first october i remember where i need the windows open, only had 3 or 4 days so far where heating has been put on. Hope the gas companies suffer and this weather continues to stay until crimbo

The watch has been extended across southern britain for the rest of the day: here

TheAccidentalExhibitionist Sun 20-Oct-13 11:59:11

Bugger, I'm flying into Bristol later today. I'm a nervous flyer too.

LIZS Sun 20-Oct-13 12:06:54

ds is on a D of E expedition in South Downs area this weekend sad

I suspect he'll be fine LIZS - somewhat soggy though!

digerd Sun 20-Oct-13 12:10:55

Got caught in a downpour on dog walk this morning. Sky to the east had lots of blue sky but it came from the west.
Been sunny here since 10am - should have waited a bit longer.

digerd Sun 20-Oct-13 12:59:40

Sky clouding over somewhat but with lighter bits around so not sure what is happening. Light breeze. 18 out 20 inconfused

Raining here. Lots of giant puddles already.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sun 20-Oct-13 13:41:25

Clap of thunder
Big Black clouds
Some rain

Very dark inside the house - lights on - sunshine vanished sad

First rumble of thunder in north worcestershire - quite windy too but no rain

KatyPutTheCuttleOn Sun 20-Oct-13 15:20:13

It's throwing it down here but no thunder - but with building work going on next door all day from 8am and the local council chopping down trees next to our house I wouldn't know if Mount Etna was erupting in next door's garden.

digerd Sun 20-Oct-13 15:37:30

S.Herts . Here too. No gusts at the moment just pouring down. And now 14 degrees.

GloriaSmud Sun 20-Oct-13 21:24:55

Had torrential rain with a few rumbles of thunder at lunchtime here (Sidmouth, Devon.) Looking at the weather forecast, think we're in for another stormy night.

It's going to be a bit of a week of it!

TORRO did well though, the forecaster was correct smile

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sun 20-Oct-13 22:49:03

OYBBK - if I was to book a child into an outdoor activity between Basingstoke/Reading this week which day do you think it's less likely to rain - or should I just abandon the idea? brew

digerd Mon 21-Oct-13 06:45:54

S.E. Not raining atm.

GloriaSmud Mon 21-Oct-13 07:25:32

Heavy rain/wind started here (Devon) just after 6am and it's horrible out there! We've had an hour of it but we seem to be having a quiet phase at the moment. <wonders how good the fixings are for static caravans>

GloriaSmud Mon 21-Oct-13 07:33:29

I've just noticed bits of the SW are under a yellow warning for heavy rain. It's going to be a wet day <packs raincoats and wellies>

digerd Mon 21-Oct-13 07:47:15

Very still and not raining atm. Looks wet out there though so assume it did rain in the night.. 13 degrees out and my geranium is blooming againsmile.
My decision is when to take the dog out. She is showing no signs of wanting to and doesn't go out in the rain. I need a few more cuppas too.

Audilover Mon 21-Oct-13 08:09:15

We're in Somerset. Very windy and it has been raining steadily since I got up at 7am this morning.

The rain woke me at 5.30am - hammering down (our roof is dripping). (Devon)

SnakeyMcBadass Mon 21-Oct-13 08:18:47

Oh digerd, how I wish I had your dog. It's dark and peeing down here <tries to ignore spaniel staring intently at lead>

Preciousbane Mon 21-Oct-13 08:36:37

There was a tornado on Hayling Island, my family live only a few miles away from there. No problems for them fortunately, here is a link about the event.

Glad your family werent affected Preciousbane smile

digerd Tue 22-Oct-13 06:38:33

It has turned into summer again. 16 degrees out hmm

RegainingUnconsciousness Tue 22-Oct-13 06:44:51

More like a tropical storm here Dig

youarewinning Tue 22-Oct-13 06:49:58

I am Portsmouth (ish) and we heard of Hayling Tornado. I wouldn't be surprised if it was because the wall of rain followed by thunder and lightening here aaas terrific grin it sounded like a plane hurtling towards the earth!!!

Storms predicted here for today too - nothing yet but is raining

LIZS Tue 22-Oct-13 07:37:40

ds returned safe and sound smile Was a rather wet, windy and muddy weekend though.

Splendid LIZS smile

digerd Tue 22-Oct-13 09:36:37

I do like the mild temperatures, but not the tropical sized weeds which are loving it far too much. Can't do much weeding due to weather and aching body/legs so they are taking over. The Day of the Triffids keeps coming to mind < exasperation face>.
Sorry for those of you having tropical storms. So far we have been spared the storm winds.
My little furry princess dog has stirred and it is not raining. Aah, she's lying on her back wriggling - oh no she's looking at the front door now and I'm still in pjs. grin

digerd Tue 22-Oct-13 13:02:12

Little furry dog and I got rained on coming back at 10.15 . I was in a rain jacket with hood, but she wasn't and she didn't look happysad

GloriaSmud Tue 22-Oct-13 18:50:52

We had heavy rain this morning but it brightened up this afternoon and we're having quite a nice dry spell atm. Just seen the weather forecast though and it looks like we're in for some thundery stuff overnight.

alcibiades Tue 22-Oct-13 19:39:55

Cracking storm here in southern Hampshire. Just lost Sky signal.

I'm in East Dorset, alcibiades. It's great!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 19:48:19

It is possible that the odd tornado might spin up out of this lot too.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 19:51:19

Looks like there may possibly have been one in Walsall on Sunday too. Anyone know anything about it?

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 19:58:06

Can I ask people along the south coast to be especially aware please and report any damage or excitement. thanks smile

officelady Tue 22-Oct-13 20:03:48

Mother of all thunderstorms happening here right now (nr Fareham in Hampshire). Bloody annoying because we had just sat down to watch the GBBO final - can't hear the TV over the thunder and the dog barking!!

bundaberg Tue 22-Oct-13 20:05:17

urgh, nothing exciting has happened here at all.

i am quite upset by this, i love a nice storm!

all we've had is rain rain rain rain rain

It's all gone quiet in East Dorset now. sad

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:11:47

Just saw the most amazing purple lightning!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:14:13

And again. Can't hear thunder though.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:15:11

(Slightly reminiscent of the war of the worlds movie)

alcibiades Tue 22-Oct-13 20:15:25

That didn't last very long, thank goodness, though it was exciting. The "thank goodness" is because the lights flickered a few times, and if they went, then by the time I'd found a torch or candle, my dinner would have gone cold. (Yeah, priorities!)

A great deal of rain - the road resembled a river.

I hope we don't get a tornado. The house opposite is undergoing a massive refit, and there's scaffolding covering over the roof. On that are corrugated metal sheets; although I'm pretty sure that it's safe under normal wind conditions, I'd have my doubts about the fixing method being able to withstand a tornado.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:17:04

It wold be pretty darn unlucky alci!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:21:08

Proper storm now.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:24:44

Bucketing grin

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:25:37

Pink lightning now overhead. Yay!!!

alcibiades Tue 22-Oct-13 20:30:27

alcibiades Tue 22-Oct-13 20:35:05

You might get lucky, bundaberg. I'm a bit puzzled by the MetOffice displays of rainfall versus lightning, because the lightning is showing up mostly to the west of the rainband. (Which doesn't tie in with the torrential rain coinciding with the lightning here.) But it could be that the lightning is on its way to you.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 20:38:33

Neighbours just knocked. They've lost all telly, Internet and phone. We haven't. Phew! Mind you, my Internet is connected through a UPS and I've unplugged my phone and tv.

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes Tue 22-Oct-13 20:39:33

Massive storm here (East Hants), started about half an hour with overhead thunder and horizontal, torrential rain, which eased after 5 mins. Distant thunder and lightning still going on.

youarewinning Tue 22-Oct-13 20:40:44

I'm also south hants - on the coast!!!! We've got a cracker that keeps moving away and then coming back for good measure.
I'm loving it - my DS with ASD not so much grin

youarewinning Tue 22-Oct-13 20:42:12

officelady I'm there too grin it was great how it didn't move on until the wall of rain pushed it through!

AnotherWorld Tue 22-Oct-13 20:44:51

Officelady - you are very near me.

Amazing lightening tonight. Keeping the kids up though. They are very excited by it.

In Gosport and LOVING this storm we're having!!!!!!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:01:52

It's three storms smile one has gone through the Hampshire/Berkshire Oxfordshire region. There's one to the north of that and one in southern hampshire moving NE.

Keep an eye on that last storm. That's where trouble often lies (tail end Charlie)

RustyBear Tue 22-Oct-13 21:03:07

Some lightning here, but only a couple of flashes.

A house down the road was struck on Sunday, blew a hole in the roof and brought a couple of ceilings down.

SlangKing Tue 22-Oct-13 21:04:15

Heavy showers and lightning in South Wilts from 6.30 till about 8.30. Couple of very bright and loud ground strikes within a mile early on then it reatreated beyond earshot. Showers brought a bit of wind but pretty calm otherwise. Mildly exciting for 15 mins but otherwise only 3 or 4 outta 10.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:06:51

Nasty RB. I hope they were ok. sad

ChippyMinton Tue 22-Oct-13 21:09:15

Just had loud rumbly thunder near Heathrow.

RustyBear Tue 22-Oct-13 21:11:02

Luckily no-one was in at the time - my friend lives close by and said they all lost phone & electricity; not sure if they've got it back yet.

alcibiades Tue 22-Oct-13 21:14:34

That's interesting that it's three storms, Kitten Witch. There still seems to be a lot of intensity in the rainfall radar over southern Hampshire around the Portsmouth/Isle of Wight area.

digerd Tue 22-Oct-13 21:19:10

It felt much warmer than the temperature indicated. The breeze was so 'balmy' but we had no sun. How come?

youarewinning Tue 22-Oct-13 21:20:15

Interesting there's lots of us Fareham and gosport gals here!!!!

And we're hogging 3 storms!!! That makes sense as to why it appeared to keep coming from all directions!!!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:21:58

High humidity digerd smile

lapsedorienteerer Tue 22-Oct-13 21:24:13

Sheet lightening and thunder may have just disturbed the Queen's viewing of the Great British bakery thingy ( west of LHR) just now. All quiet now grin

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:25:55

Excellent! grin

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:33:58

Really interested in the storm around Portsmouth. Reports very welcome!

pinkkoala Tue 22-Oct-13 21:39:15

I am in northants, we have rain, lots of lightning, and few rumbles. The lightning is so bright
were we due any storms.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:41:15

Yes pink you were smile

pinkkoala Tue 22-Oct-13 21:50:56

Hope it doesnt last all night its starting to freak me out
what do you know ohyou.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 21:57:26

tornado watch issued again.

Wondering if the southern edge of the box should be moved a little further south though.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 22:01:34

It looks like there will be a break for a couple of hours or so before the next round (after this one has gone through)

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 22:06:13

Torro map has been corrected grin

Meglet Tue 22-Oct-13 22:09:53

Is Basingstoke going to get walloped by that last north heading storm then?

SuperiorCat Tue 22-Oct-13 22:10:01

pinkkoala I'm in Northants too, but we only had a couple of flashes and haven't seen or heard anything since

pinkkoala Tue 22-Oct-13 22:15:34

Superior we are northampton south, it was my dd that noticed it first during eastenders, then we had a big flash during gbbo and some thunder, since then some lightening. Just hoping dh is in before the next batch, he is driving, hgv driver.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 22:18:38

Meglet, that one seems to have lost a lot of activity but there's loads to come after midnight.

GloriaSmud Tue 22-Oct-13 22:24:06

Wind has got up a lot in the last hour here (Exmouth) and the caravan we're in is creaking in quite a scary way! I've been watching a great wodge (highly technical meteorological term!) Coming up from France on rain today.co.uk and think we're in for another stormy night <hides under bedsheets>

Perihelion Tue 22-Oct-13 22:25:33

Still no exciting weather........envy

Very exciting lightning earlier (Chichester), but all gone calm now.
Going to bed before the next lot hits.

alcibiades Tue 22-Oct-13 22:32:20

The (new) extent of that Torro map does look a bit worrying. The MetOffice rainfall radar shows another band of rain coming up SW to NE, which shows the path that the weather system(s) are trending.

It depends on how well I sleep whether I notice if we get a double dose of the flash/bang stuff.

pinkkoala - I hope your DH gets home ok. Driving in such intense rain is challenging enough, without having to deal with the numpties.

Meglet Tue 22-Oct-13 22:33:31

I'm not a fan of exciting weather. It usually ends in me having to call a roofing company to repair something hmm.

Good God! DH and I have been getting ready for his meteorology lecture and there's a low sitting south of Greenland which looks like it will drop to 956mb on Friday. I have never seen pressure that low shock

NoComet Tue 22-Oct-13 22:40:12

Yes DH did have to take the gazebo down in the dark, stupid weather.

Back to flood warnings for the Wye etc near Hereford, Winter has began.

youarewinning Tue 22-Oct-13 22:43:47

OYBBK I'll appoint myself South Hants Coast weather reporter for the night grin So far some of the storm has created pink flashes, very blue and has made it look like daylight outside. Winds seem to have come from different directions as the rain has come in and gone again.

All quiet atm.

However.................... DS has finally fallen asleep in my bed, does not often sleep through anyway so I suspect I'll be awake 1) due to the fact it's the sofa for me and 2) because if he wakes and it's a storm I doubt he'll be so kind as to get back to sleep grin

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Tue 22-Oct-13 22:48:17

Ill look at that tomorrow Hester.

Youarewinning splendid! It does look potent tonight.

Going to catch some sleep while I can. Sweet dreams all.

pinkkoala Tue 22-Oct-13 22:51:38

Dh just in, said roads were grim.
might go to bed before the next lot due, any ideas when we will get next lot.

youarewinning Tue 22-Oct-13 22:55:48

I'm not sure splendid is the word I'd use grin Potent storms + noise sensitive DS with AS = disaster grin

Have got ipad charging and headphones ready though!

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Tue 22-Oct-13 22:55:51

That was an amazing storm! Amazing lightning - it 'stayed' in the sky ages and was pink (OYBBK/OYWWW) what'sthat all about (and remember who you are talking to!! Small words - and s l o w l y please!!). I was hoping to get some sleep tonight (none last night, not a flipping wink!) but hey... if another storm is in the offing grin

I'm still gringrin I love 'strong' weather grin

SuperiorCat Tue 22-Oct-13 23:15:31

youarewinning - I feel your pain, 15yo DS is on a camp bed in our room as he is very noise sensitive (also ASD)

mummylin Wed 23-Oct-13 00:45:33

Pouring with rain here in Dorset and very windy

mummylin Wed 23-Oct-13 00:51:20

Oh my god the rain is horrendous and the wind is really noisy.

Anyone up and listening to the wind bee rain? An in London and it sounds amazing, trees are bent double!

Wind AND rain, not a giant bee. There appears to be a river running down the road outside.

Now I want the pink lightning please!

digerd Wed 23-Oct-13 06:57:10

Don't know what the time was in the middle of last night, but I was woken up with wind and rain lashing on my windows and flat roof extension - twice in the night.
Not raining atm. Feel cold too and put the heating on.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Wed 23-Oct-13 06:57:56

No t&l from the overnight lot for us but it was quite a wild and wooly night with the rain and wind.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Wed 23-Oct-13 07:01:38

I'll do a thread on Mondays potential when I'm more awake. Possibly a bit too exciting if the models verify.

digerd Wed 23-Oct-13 07:15:35

I'm past the age where I want excitement. A lovely contented peaceful life is what I need smile. But this year I've been the target of gremlins grrrr.
Now will it be raining again at 09.15 as I have a 5 minute walk in my dance clothes to get to the hall?hmm

NK5BM3 Wed 23-Oct-13 07:17:54

East kent here. And vvv windy. Big trees are 'moving' quite a lot!! Argh.

youarewinning Wed 23-Oct-13 07:25:35

Windy and rain here. Possibly few rumbles in the distance but no t and l afaik.

GeekLove Wed 23-Oct-13 07:33:30

We had an awesome downpour in Coventry at 20.00 last night. I could not see the end of my garden 10m away. Am intrigued to see what I will find during the school run.

GeekLove Wed 23-Oct-13 07:35:05

Was clear but with a cumulonimbus in the east.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Wed 23-Oct-13 07:51:41

digerd, there may be a bit of rain around but it is rapidly clearing.

looks like a very pleasant afternoon for many smile

digerd Wed 23-Oct-13 08:19:22

Oh good. At least little dog can take her 1st walk of the day at 2pm in dry weather.
Don't mind getting soaked at 11.30 when I walk home, but getting drenched going and dancing in a soaking flouncy dance skirt is not appealing. Most long raincoats are open from knees down.
Just had a peek outside and the clouds are breaking up from the south and hurtling across the sky at great speed. Bit too blustery for walking head on southwards in comfort, but is only a few minutes.
Must stop whining and get on with it grin

GloriaSmud Wed 23-Oct-13 09:50:25

Rain started about 11.45 pm here but by midnight, the wind suddenly dropped and rain stopped. We had more rain overnight but without the wind. Today looks like it's going to be a nice day - there's a strange orange ball in the sky and I'm not used to the brightness!

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Wed 23-Oct-13 14:11:21

I've created a thread about Mondays gales potential here

3rd watch in a week. First two did end up with tornadoes in them.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Fri 25-Oct-13 22:09:09

looking for reports from Warrington and Calderdale please.

OhYouWickedWickedWitch Fri 25-Oct-13 22:15:42

I can't believe how active this week has been! (and how accurate the watches have been!)
