Weather warnings for this weekend

issued by the metoffice.
Heavy rain/thunderstorms coming up from France, moving in from the east. Bit of uncertainty how far west/north it might move so warnings could change.

Thanks Gloria, been out for the day. There is massive uncertainty as to how much rain will fall where but there could be flash floods as up to two inches of rain fall. In parts of northern france the storms could be severe with a chance of moderate tornadoes developing there. We need to see you that translates here but I fear its going to be a case of now-casting.

BlackeyedSusan Fri 26-Jul-13 23:56:14

oh heckity heck. we are out tomorrow to buy a new fridge. i am hoping i do not get soaked.

ps you had an extremely close escape on tuesday gloria. grin

Really really impressive storm system in France last night. Question is, how much of it will influence what happens here....

And the answer to that is... Well that storm system just grazes Kent in the next few hours. But you'll have to wait for next update from me as I've run out of time sad

GloriaSmud Sat 27-Jul-13 08:38:53

I think we did, Susan, was a close one there! Hope your cousin and neighbours are OK.

Kent storm system showing up here at the moment (along with a reminder of that lightning page on netweather!)

Possible storms over the weekend have made the BBC news website.

Looks like that storm system is swinging up into E. Anglia. Watch out Norfolk and Suffolk.

GerardWay Sat 27-Jul-13 09:54:50

Hi OhYouBadBadKitten, do you know what the weather will be like in Bournemouth. A friend is holding an outdoor charity event and the met office is giving severe weather warnings. Thankyou.

GerardWay Sat 27-Jul-13 09:56:26

Opps sorry, the weather for today. blush

kissmyheathenass Sat 27-Jul-13 10:00:29

Bournemouth is ok so far . It looks quite bright. Storms were forecast here yesterday but it was really hot and sunny. Which charity event?

Oh dear Gerardway. Looking very wet this afternoon sad

GerardWay Sat 27-Jul-13 10:19:31

It's a back garden event for MacMillan. They were expecting over 60 people to attend and have spent a fortune on food. sad Thankyou OhYouBadBadKitten it's better to be forewarned.

If they are able to scrabble some gazebos together that would help, but get her to guy the down properly as there could be some big gusts about.

Looks like 2pm for Bournemouth. Some very heavy rain showing on the radar which scrapes Dorset with the majority passing over Hampshire/Sussex/Kent.
Also some rain showing up to the west but not looking as impressive on the radar -yet. There is plenty of chance for it to beef up.

In the mean time we are running a full 9C hotter than the met office forecast for this area, so I would take any met office forecasts on the potential intensity of the storms with a pinch of salt. Hotter usually means more kaboom. (More energy)

GerardWay Sat 27-Jul-13 12:45:30

Thankyou for the update. The charity event is due to start at 4pm.

Bournemouth might just escape it........ System is sliding more east.

thekingfisher Sat 27-Jul-13 13:15:07

how about south suffolk/essex border ? tis very very humid and warm here and whilst sun is mainly shining is getting very hazy?

estofex warnings are as bad as I've ever seen for the south of France. For our area read the one issued yesterday..

South Suffolk/Essex border look like it will be hit between 4pm and 5pm (ish!)

mmmm supposed to be at a party in a field in Surrey tonight also camping.hoping it all passes to the east (sorry easterly peoplesad )

thekingfisher Sat 27-Jul-13 14:12:49

tks OYBBK still hot and humid here will prepare for 4 pm! - DH trying to mow lawn in anticipation of rain ( not sure of the logic of that but I know better than to advise him otherwise )

Well I've mown the lawn, put away the gazebo, the windows are pulled to and I'm watching the netweather.tv radar page. Looks like it has hit the coast at Brighton, am I right?

thekingfisher Sat 27-Jul-13 14:53:14

Cloud is building - cloyingly humid and hot - sun still out - mowing abated for the moment! - going to dead head and tie in roses before the onslaught...

thekingfisher Sat 27-Jul-13 14:53:34

Ohh sun just gone in behind the clouds...still very high level though

valiumredhead Sat 27-Jul-13 15:31:10

Roasting hot this morning in Beds but getting cloudier now feels like a storm is due...

Woah! Huge rain area coming in off the south coast. Caen and Le Havre fairly active in terms of lightning strikes.

D&p no chance that it will miss you tonight. Sorry.

The eastern storm near Suffolk is thinning nicely for those with outdoor events. Will be short and sharp before the next band comes in later. The western side is looking rather more prolonged and problematic.

BIWI Sat 27-Jul-13 16:04:54

Rain just arrived in SW19.

pipsqueakz Sat 27-Jul-13 16:28:07

Absolutely persisting it down here in north somerset! Did manage to dry a load of washing earlier before the massive cloud burst! Its a very big cloud at that.

thekingfisher Sat 27-Jul-13 16:31:54

wind picking up here ( Between Colchester and Sudbury) def cloud building but sun still present...Temps have dropped which is good as I was gardening in my underwear it was so hot and sticky

bugger, such is life, tents up now let's hope it's waterproof, party is not far from home and we don't drink so can always abandon ship.

TwasBrillig Sat 27-Jul-13 16:40:12

Dorset here. Some rain . I want my thunderstorm! We keep missing out!

I can see why the met office have warnings out, many of us across England are in for a deluge this evening.

MrsSalvoMontalbano Sat 27-Jul-13 16:50:09

the rain has suddenly come down large in SW14 where I had left the car roof down grin

KatyMac Sat 27-Jul-13 16:52:35

We have had a cool misty day (just south of the broads)

But locally we are expecting flooding (apparently) does that sound right?

KFFOREVER Sat 27-Jul-13 17:01:22

mrs- does that mean its on its way to SE london or will we miss it.

SE London will certainly see some heavy rain later.

Katymac, yes. It could be heavy enough for flooding.
MrsS - oops!
KF, when I say later, I don't mean much later. Sort of soon really.

magimedi Sat 27-Jul-13 17:06:22

East Sussex coast - had some rain & a few claps of thunder about 2pm. Then it brightened (& I got a swim on the high tide - yay) & now gone very cloudy, still & humid.

AugustaProdworthy Sat 27-Jul-13 17:06:46

Please rain soon here! It's still 28 degrees according to the car and way too humid. (Cambs)

KatyMac Sat 27-Jul-13 17:10:41

Oh Joy!

At least I live on a hill not many people in Norfolk can say that

KFFOREVER Sat 27-Jul-13 17:11:24

Im eagerly waiting by the window for the storm to start.

Magimed - make the most of the interlude!

Our temp has dropped hugely over the past two hours. It feels ready to rain, but not in an exciting way.

I like it better when you can see huge cumulonimbus piling in onto a blue sky and the sky goes all brassy and still apart from a low rumble on the edge of hearing.

Katymac - how true! You must be able to see very far grin

PseudoBadger Sat 27-Jul-13 17:16:39

That mass over northern France looks exciting! But will it dissipate like this first band? By the time it passed us in N London it was rather boring.

magimedi Sat 27-Jul-13 17:22:14

Interlude is over - just heard a rumble & it's gone v. misty.

Agree with you re the cunim, OYBBK.

KatyMac Sat 27-Jul-13 17:22:44

Well no, not really

In the rest of the country they would think it more of a sleeping policeman or a hump in the road.....my house is about 4 ft above the road and the end of the road is about 2 ft lower again with a pond - so rising water would have to rise a hell of a long way to hit my house and the other side of the pond is a field then a broad.....I know which way the water will flow wink

mummylin Sat 27-Jul-13 17:27:00

Tipping it down in Bournemouth no thunder or anything though

grin katymac.

So it's hit our shores then. I really hope it doesn't disintegrate like the other bands did earlier. I don't think it will. Desperately need the rain. I was weeding this afternoon and was having to carve the weeds out of the soil.

EeTraceyluv Sat 27-Jul-13 17:43:01

I'm in Cambridge - it's suddenly gone a bit cooler and quite still - is ion the way???? not thinking haha to all the folk festival people virtually in my back garden driving me mad with the noise

It is on its way, but just like the other bands that came from France today it's thinning as it moves north. frustrating!!!!!! I really thought that the extra heat here would pep it up some.

Btw, this storm coming at us produced 76mph gusts in one spot in France. Brought down trees, flooding etc.

BIWI Sat 27-Jul-13 18:34:28

We only had about 10 minutes of rain in the end - and nothing particularly special. It's really muggy here though, and getting darker by the minute, so hopefully we will have more!

thekingfisher Sat 27-Jul-13 18:52:53

nothing doing here - sun gone in and some high cloud cover - looks as if it might rain lightly but no dramatic drama sad

Big rumble of thunder, but just the one! (Sussex/Surrey border)

valiumredhead Sat 27-Jul-13 19:01:58

I'm sitting in the garden, waiting...

Pascha Sat 27-Jul-13 19:08:22

1 Mississippi 2 mississippi 3 Mississippi 4 Mississippi 5 Mississippi 6 Mississippi

6 miles away then smile

Lovely big sharp lightning forks, rumbley-rumbley ongoing low thunder and a bit of rain. Neil next door is still mowing and the cricketers are still on the green for some reason.

I like this kind of storm.

What about North Lincolnshire? The met office keep promising us rain and then we don't get any! My garden really needs it!! Also my waterbutt which was full at the beginning of spring. It is a 1000 litre one which we installed in April last year... It filled in just 10 days from all that rain we had shock

valiumredhead Sat 27-Jul-13 19:10:15

Just started pouring with rain!grin

Sunny here! S E Cornwall. Really want a thunderstorm...

BlackeyedSusan Sat 27-Jul-13 19:20:10

<pants> out of breath due to mrs salvo!

just run down to garage before the storm hits. left the camera in and your post reminded me.

west mids here. it is very black over head. there have just been a few large spots of rain and at least one rumble of thunder. at 7.15

just starting again now with heavy rain.

youarewinning Sat 27-Jul-13 19:25:18

Oh so glad of this thread - was gonna search out OYBBK about a weather question.

I am in South England, south coast in Hampshire. Earlier today we suddenly had a huge wall of wind pass through. It lasted about 30-40 seconds and blew through and disappeared. confused

Now we have refreshing rain and the mugginess has gone. Hoping for a massive storm but doesn't look likely?

Kent and East Sussex are in line for some very nasty weather imminently. Large hail ad severe gusts.
Le Havre managed an 82mph.

Any obs from that area will be very interesting. Radar is showing some very interesting features.

Youarewinning it's going east of you.

PseudoBadger Sat 27-Jul-13 19:43:07

I have friends camped at a dog show in Haywards Heath; over 1000 dogs there. I hope they will all be ok (they often manage to escape from tents/caravans in storms)

PseudoBadger Sat 27-Jul-13 19:43:34

Heavy rain N London

A mix of sunny spells and grey muggyness in Manchester.

I would like to report some serious hail in my brothers town in Germany though - huge golf ball sized, and they have had windows broken by it for the second time in 6 weeks!

KFFOREVER Sat 27-Jul-13 19:44:45

Its pouring with rain in SE London.

A mix of sunny spells and grey muggyness in Manchester.

I would like to report some serious hail in my brothers town in Germany though - huge golf ball sized, and they have had windows broken by it for the second time in 6 weeks!

EeTraceyluv Sat 27-Jul-13 19:46:50

Still nothing here really enjoying the muffled diddly pissing diddly of the Folk fest

JuliaScurr Sat 27-Jul-13 19:47:46

steady downpour in Madway

Queenbee245 Sat 27-Jul-13 19:52:22

Nothing here yet (Essex) although its been grey for about 45 mins now and has cooled down, did hear a rumble of thunder about half hour ago but that's it so far

Queenbee245 Sat 27-Jul-13 19:53:27

And it's just started pouring down!

BIWI Sat 27-Jul-13 19:55:40

Steady rain here now (SW19), but also flash of lightning and rumble of thunder! Lovely.

magimedi Sat 27-Jul-13 19:57:00

East Sussex calling - been raining for the last hour. Lovely steady, heavy, garden relief rain.

Had a couple of claps of thunder & one lightening flash that looked circular - but no more for now.

GloriaSmud Sat 27-Jul-13 20:02:56

Started raining here (Leicester) about an hour ago. Nice line of lightning strikes showing up near us here and the thunder is rumbling around. shock at the lightning strikes down Channel/Kent way.

PseudoBadger Sat 27-Jul-13 20:03:11

Thunder and lightning here N london

youarewinning Sat 27-Jul-13 20:05:10

OYBBK any idea why the wall of wind? About 3pm ish this afternoon. Was actually really quite freaky.

Rooners Sat 27-Jul-13 20:06:29

We have a big storm and rain in Kent

Thunder getting closer, about a mile away now.

Hoping it doesn't blow a gale as the gazebo isn't tied down. Maybe I should do that now...

We're going camping on Monday, looks a bit variable. I don't mind. There's a pool smile Outdoor swimming in the rain is fantastic isn't it?

makemineapinot Sat 27-Jul-13 20:08:16

Oh when will it hit Scotland?! Off to western isles on Mon and was hoping for Sun!

PseudoBadger Sat 27-Jul-13 20:09:20

"Outdoor swimming in the rain is fantastic isn't it?"

As long as it's not a thunderstorm grin

GloriaSmud Sat 27-Jul-13 20:09:36

Storm showing up here as well at the moment.

Rooners Sat 27-Jul-13 20:11:10

Oh gosh is that dangerous then? Ds1 will want to know so he can try it grin

HaplessHousewife Sat 27-Jul-13 20:15:22

In SE London/Kent borders and it's been raining steadily for a while. We've had a couple of rumbles of thunder but not too close – I counted to about 8.

GloriaSmud Sat 27-Jul-13 20:15:51

Has gone very dark here ~ the street lights have come on already and the wind's beginning to get up.

PseudoBadger Sat 27-Jul-13 20:18:32

Definitely should not be immersed in water during a thunderstorm....

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/advice/lightning.html

alcibiades Sat 27-Jul-13 20:20:44

Rooners - I think the problem with swimming in a thunderstorm is that if there's a lightning strike, the electrical charge travels very far through the body of water and electrocutes anything in the water.

alcibiades Sat 27-Jul-13 20:23:06

We've not had much rain here in my bit of southern Hampshire. The rain system seem to split just before it got here and went either side.

youarewinning Sat 27-Jul-13 20:29:40

Alcibiades We had prolonged rain but not heavy - also southern hants. Has cooled it down tho grin

Rooners Sat 27-Jul-13 20:34:03

thanks guys shock

I'm sure I was swimming in Brian Blessed's pond in a storm when I was about 18. Naked It was glorious, but oh dear. Lucky escape!

EeTraceyluv Sat 27-Jul-13 20:53:03

Started about 10 minutes ago here. Heavy rain, two claps of thunder so far..

digerd Sat 27-Jul-13 21:16:32

S.Herts
Rain started about 7.15 with a few thunder claps but saw no lightning and heard no wind. Just now heard distant rumblings like a plane after thinking it had moved awayhmm. 20 degrees now and rain not so heavy atm.

alcibiades Sat 27-Jul-13 21:35:39

Rooners - well, as it was Brian Blessed's pond you were swimming in, you were probably safe. With his booming voice, he'd have been able to scare off the thunder gods. wink

youarewinning - from my nearest online weather station, we've had 1.8 mm over the last three hours. And the temperature dropped from around 26 C to 16 C, and is now holding steady. Which is a lot better than recently.

youarewinning Sat 27-Jul-13 23:00:28

Yes definitely cooler - which is refreshing grin

I will google my nearest online station - I'm sure I can work out how!

youarewinning Sat 27-Jul-13 23:02:57

Mine says temp is 17.4c and 3mm of rain!

BlackeyedSusan Sun 28-Jul-13 00:16:47

w mids. lots of rain this evening.

digerd Sun 28-Jul-13 06:17:23

SE
Not much rain in my bucket from last evening/night. Sunny again this morning and still very humid with no breeze confused

digerd Sun 28-Jul-13 06:57:23

Within 5 minutes of my previous post, it had clouded over. Lots of cloud moving at high speed from the south, but also sunny spells. Best of all was a strong fresh breeze smile < and cool at 6.30>

awaywego1 Sun 28-Jul-13 09:05:08

Rained for 10 hours straight in south yorks!

Still no rain here in Cornwall although after a beautiful sunny evening last night it is now quite windy here this morning with some cloud.

GloriaSmud Sun 28-Jul-13 09:37:25

Torrential rain overnight and we've had 26.4mm of rain in the last 24hrs.
Sunny and breezy this morning ~ 21C here (Leicester)

digerd Sun 28-Jul-13 10:11:10

Sunny here now, the clouds buzzed off or broke up, and there is still a fresh breeze. S.Herts. Very nicesmile

GloriaSmud Sun 28-Jul-13 11:12:53

Reports of flooding around Leicester and Leicestershire.

We had torrential rain for hours overnight ( vaguely aware every time I woke ( which was lots) that it was still raining!)

I am going camping today!

Not sure whether to grin or sad

required steadily between seven and nine yesterday then cleared up and party continued.tent flooded though so I came homegrin

BlackeyedSusan Sun 28-Jul-13 16:40:34

PseudoBadger Sun 28-Jul-13 16:50:12

Had some heavy showers this afternoon in N London. Might have heard a rumble of thunder but can't be certain.

CPtart Sun 28-Jul-13 17:12:17

Camped out through ten hours of constant rain ( torrential at times) last night in Cumbria. Interesting to say the least!

digerd Sun 28-Jul-13 17:40:22

Had a shower about 4pm, but didn't last long and been sunny and fresh otherwise. 23 atm

youarewinning Sun 28-Jul-13 21:14:21

YAY grin

After a very dark evening and feeling very muggy we finally have our thunderstorm - I've waited a week for ours envy

Thunder and lightning!
