Surprise snowfall expected.

(129 Posts)

No idea why the met office haven't got warnings out....

There's a dodgy little low pressure that's spun up - not unusual in these circs that could bring wide spread snowfall later today. Those in the south should be especially aware, though it could affect those in the north and east too. If you are heading out I'd take shovels and blankets just in case.

April Fool? Pleeease.

Yikes. sad

I know, I really took my eye off the ball on this one!

I ought to add my usual disclaimer, amateur, don't change plans etc....

No school run OYBBK. as far as I am concerned it's fine. smile

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Mon 01-Apr-13 00:25:05

Thanks OYBBK .

Notquite Mon 01-Apr-13 00:40:21

Why would it even be a surprise? sad

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme Mon 01-Apr-13 00:40:22

That's a nice description of a polar low, where does it say we're expecting one?

TobyLerone Mon 01-Apr-13 09:01:36

Now is the perfect time for Kent to get a giant blizzard.

We have woke up to about a foot of snow. shock

Have you got your snow shovel at the ready Toby?

TobyLerone Mon 01-Apr-13 09:07:24

I'll just send the kids out with a trowel grin

Polar lows can drop a foot or more of snow in just a fee hours shock

DC are all excited. Me less so. Trudging up to Spar with the sledge in a minute. sad

How deep is it sparkling? Is it really raging out there? good luck!!

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 09:12:10

where are you spark?

So does Bristol count as the South?

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 09:14:17

After a lovely sunny morning yesterday, it is dull and dismal, but freezing outside this morning, but was still hoping for the sky to clear.

Now, horror of horrors, I read about snow in the South today?
If it is an April fool, I am not amused .
Had already decided to be back in my eskimo outfit this morning after opening the door and felt colder than the freezer, but was +1. <bad tempered face>

Bristol is south for sure!

PuppyMonkey Mon 01-Apr-13 09:16:12

Am I the only one who is a bit grin at a surprise being expected.

TobyLerone Mon 01-Apr-13 09:16:28

I've just got up and it's hammering down shock

I'm doing a couple of cleaning jobs this morning and was about to cart the hoover out to the car. It's as deep as my car's wheels!

TobyLerone Mon 01-Apr-13 09:16:56

In Kent, btw.

Pascha Mon 01-Apr-13 09:17:19

NO snow in kent please. Ignore Toby.

Blimey, already Toby! <kicks self at not being able to warn more people>

Puppy, it is a lovely surprise if you like snow, a last hurray!

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 09:19:53

nothing here yet, about 10 miles from Toby I think

Anyone else startled at the amount of snow they have?

PuppyMonkey Mon 01-Apr-13 09:21:21

No, I mean if it is expected, it's not really a surprise...grin

Nothing would surprise us nowadays sad
Except if it got warm! Now that would be an unbelievable surprise!

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:24:10

Can we have a few locations and counties sprinkled around these reports please?
It's very frustrating.

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:24:46

Or put where you live on your profile?

Toby is Kent, I can't remember where sparkling is. Hope she is ok!

I'm still here watching the cars trying to get up the road.

Perhaps it's safer to stay at home. How deep is it now?

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:32:38

In Kent, Sparkling?
Or the Cairngorms?

Cairngorms is due to get fog tomorrow. That doesn't sound like fun!

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:36:57

All that atmospheric

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 09:37:09

Think the sky is getting brighter - still hoping for sun and no snow before little dog walk at 10.30
Perhaps I should go out now before it snows.

sassytheFIRST Mon 01-Apr-13 09:39:51

Really, sparkling? Not a flake here in Kidd!!

MooncupGoddess Mon 01-Apr-13 09:39:53

Aargh - I'm supposed to be on a boat sailing down the Essex coast later today. The Met Office forecast looks fine, do you think the polar low will affect us?

DizzyHoneyBee Mon 01-Apr-13 09:41:35

Sparklingbrook, I don't believe you for a minute - unless you have freak weather conditions just a couple of miles down the road grin

Ooh sassy I believe it is very localised. My Dad is 2 miles away hasn't had a flake. shock

Freak i tell you Dizzy. You are so lucky.

LillethTheCat Mon 01-Apr-13 09:43:51

ooh its just started snowing here in North Yorkshire too. So its not just the south. Hope it doesn't lay

That's the nature of these lows, they are very discrete. (In the science sense not the keeping a secret sense!)

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 09:45:09

I think it's an April Fool. Still looking at the sky for it breaking up into blue and looks promising < wishful thinking>

I think you should be ok where you are digerd. Enjoy your walk and check your inbox smile

Lilleth, I'm being a rubbish forecaster today, sorry, the air flow must be very unstable, which can be enough to set off a stream of polar lows.

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:49:56

It's starting here in Sussex now, grey and overcast and quite large flakes.
Hope it settles, cold enough.
DS loves the snow. He's just set off for his holiday job, bouncing at the

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:50:40

Cat's seriously unhappy though.

Is anyone old enough to remember the polar low in 1969?

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 09:52:24

I've told my children it's supposed to snow, they were very excited.

OYBBK I luffs you - moreso as it's Easter hols so I didn't even panic before remembering the date wink

My bad cat gets driven demented by the snow, tries to keep an eye on every flake!

Surely you aren't letting your ds head out in this? I hope his wellies are tall!

It's snow joke MrsFlowerpot grin

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 09:54:39

That's encouraging Kitten. Can't decide which of my eskimo outfits to wear as they are different 'togs'. Then it takes me ages to get it all on. But little dog is very patient with me.
Didn't know I had an inbox and don't know how to check it < must try and find it>

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 09:56:09

Wow, it's billowing down with snow here in the Peaks. Has been since just after midnight. Shovels ready.

A little envelope at the top of your screen. smile

Oh well done Pan, glad to see you are prepared. Have you got tins and stuff in? The Peak District can get really blocked up can't it.

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 09:58:16

He's huge, and built like a werebear. In bad weather I launch him out to do the shopping, with a sledge to tow. I like watching the flakes through a window with a brew

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 09:58:23

I'm just worried in case the snow DOESN'T happen and they are disappointed

(time to own up maybe?)

GloriaSmud Mon 01-Apr-13 09:58:52

Netweather think satellites are responsible for the cold weather, could they be responsible for this polar low as well?

wearingpurple Mon 01-Apr-13 09:59:22

Noooo! Driving up from Dorset to Cardiff Airport tomorrow morning for holiday flight. Hope this doesn't happen.

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 09:59:29

Well I tried to stock up this morning but the local shop was emptied already and I won't be able to get the car out. Shovelling will be done later.....

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 10:00:56

They could peturb the upper atmosphere Gloria. I hadn't considered that before....

mandragora, I always try to remember to put a disclaimer at the top, I'd hate for anyone to rely on me! Some days more than others.

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 10:02:51

A few yeas ago, I got snowballed by DS in August. He's apparently saved a stash in the freezer and waited months.

Wearingpurple, I'm confident you'll be fine smile

BikeRunSki Mon 01-Apr-13 10:02:57

So being in Gloucestershire and planning to drive home to Yorkshire tommorow may not be a great plan?

eatyourveg Mon 01-Apr-13 10:03:38

Well I'm Kent too and its sunny here - Toby must be the other end of the county - local bbc forecast on breakfast this morning said 5 degrees and sunny today but with bitterly cold wind lasting all week, the only part of the map that wasn't sunny was the surrey kent border - definitely an April fool I'd say

I like your ds's style Nebulous!

Pan, I do hope you are going to be ok? We might be seeing you on the bbc in a few days time. Can you struggle down to your local pub, that's where they like to do reports from.

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 10:05:10

Well, you could detour round Worcestershire and the Peak district, BikeRunSki.
Perhaps you could take a ferry round Scotland?

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 10:05:25

Oh more fool you for not believing OYBK. There's lots to shovel up here.

BRS, check your inbox smile

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 10:06:12

kitten. Found it in my normal e-mails inbox, just now.

Think I'll wear my sky blue eskimo outfit as the sky is still dull grey, not as bulky as my pinky/cerise one, but brighter in colour.
Little dog has her own natural fantastic very thick fur coat.
Time to get ready now to brave the elements with a very cold wind to boot.

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 10:06:17

We have a microclimate in Sussex. Famous for it, because of the Downs and the sea and other stuff.

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 10:06:26

Guys stop it, people are taking it seriously. I nearly cancelled our plans earlier.
And the children are going to be fed up.

A ferry is a fab idea!

pan, shovel it this way please!

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 10:07:34

You take things on the internet seriously?
That can be rather dangerous.

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 10:07:55

Our local is called The Snowman's Arms we get that much of the stuff.

MandragoraWurzelstock Mon 01-Apr-13 10:09:52

MordecaiAndRigby Mon 01-Apr-13 10:11:26

We had a foot and a half here in Warwickshire. Just getting the kids bundled up to go sledging.

crikeybill Mon 01-Apr-13 10:11:42

Any chance for me ? Surrey, south London way ???
Please !!!
Would love some snow at last

mine is called the Bull Inn. Nice pub.

Not a flake here!

auforfoulkesake Mon 01-Apr-13 10:12:50

what is a microclimate?

Oh well done Mordecai!

Crickeybill, I'm afraid I don't know, it's very random today!

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 10:14:20

You might be on the wrong side of the Downs, and too close to the metropolis.
DSis says it's not snowing in Farnham.

A microclimate is where local features affect the climate. For instance I live in a frost hollow, we are usually 2-3C below the rest of the area on cold nights because of the way the valley funnels the cold air.

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 10:15:25

The Bull Inn you say. Large shovels needed there then...

crikeybill Mon 01-Apr-13 10:15:26

Oh....I feel a bit silly now.....deflates.....

TheNebulousBoojum Mon 01-Apr-13 10:15:59

microclimate :
'A microclimate is a local atmospheric zone where the climate differs from the surrounding area. The term may refer to areas as small as a few square feet (for example a garden bed) or as large as many square miles.
Microclimates exist, for example, near bodies of water which may cool the local atmosphere, or in heavily urban areas where brick, concrete, and asphalt absorb the sun's energy, heat up, and reradiate that heat to the ambient air: the resulting urban heat island is a kind of microclimate.

Another contributing factor to microclimate is the slope or aspect of an area. South-facing slopes in the Northern Hemisphere and north-facing slopes in the Southern Hemisphere are exposed to more direct sunlight than opposite slopes and are therefore warmer for longer.'

Wait til I tell dd the news smile

gallicgirl Mon 01-Apr-13 10:40:44

Hope it doesn't snow in Essex. We no longer have a snow shovel after helping someone dig their car out of snow in Peak District last weekend. Chancer gave me a lift to the pub then drove off with my shovel.

The cheeky blighter shock

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 10:45:23

Sorry gallicgirl blush. I'll post it back. It may smell a bit though.

Dd is astoundingly excited now that I've shown her the forecast!

Pascha Mon 01-Apr-13 10:56:32

DH reports lots of snowfall at Lydden Hill racetrack. DS1 won't get out of the car and the races are all delayed while they grit the track. He's glad he took the Landrover.

Still no snow here at home smile

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman Mon 01-Apr-13 10:57:54

I live in a mircoclimate or is a bubble? Can't quite remember what my therapist called it now.

OYBBK I did not believe you this morning until I looked out of the window just now to see...snowflakes falling.

gallicgirl Mon 01-Apr-13 10:59:33

It had better smell of spring flowers or I'll be around later

I noticed Lydden Hill have Drift days coming up soon. That made me smile

GloriaSmud Mon 01-Apr-13 13:46:55

We had blizzard conditions for a while and a good ground covering but then as if by magic (channels inner 'Mr Benn') it all disappeared at midday!

haveapear Mon 01-Apr-13 13:53:20

No snow here (Isle Of Wight) smile

ChippingInIsEggceptional Mon 01-Apr-13 13:56:39

OK - I'm thoroughly confused. It's not like our OYBBK to joke about the weather but she's not denying it either hmm It feels too cold for snow here.

GotMyGoat Mon 01-Apr-13 13:57:00

I've noticed someone saying they've had snow in warwickshire - any chance of the white stuff in Oxfordshire?

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 15:09:07

Same here! Stroke of noon and it all melted away!

I know, it's a weather miracle - it's all gone shock

ChippingInIsEggceptional Mon 01-Apr-13 15:16:26

Hmm - I think some legs have been well and truely pulled grin

Naughty Kitten, I feel a wee bit sorry for the children whose Mums took it seriously and told them it would snow later though :/

Mind you, it was a dead give away when Pan admitted to having snow - he only ever admits to sunshine grin

LillethTheCat Mon 01-Apr-13 15:17:44

That was an oops chipping!

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 17:00:19

We've had sun for an hour here.

GotMyGoat Mon 01-Apr-13 18:01:20

!!!! You all LIED ????

Just got back from Spar with my sledge. What did I miss? grin

JollyPurpleGiant Mon 01-Apr-13 18:16:02

We always have snow it seems. Not today but we had loads on Sat. And there's still white stuff in our garden that is unwilling to thaw. I reckon it has squatters rights by now.

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 18:44:37

Sky totally clear and blue now, just right for hard frost tonight, so may be all white tomorrow morning.

DizzyHoneyBee Mon 01-Apr-13 18:51:38

Oh sparkling you should have come here, it's lovely blue skies and sunshine grin

Nooooo Dizzy. How strange. grin

digerd Mon 01-Apr-13 19:03:25

Can't believe it's +4 ,feels like -4 at least.

DizzyHoneyBee Mon 01-Apr-13 20:02:18

Oh yes Sparkling - in fact I washed a double duvet and it dried on the line today grin

GMG blush

Pan Mon 01-Apr-13 20:39:02

thanks OYBK for this thread. It was fun. Really sorry if anyone did change plans or get dcs excited.

TobyLerone Tue 02-Apr-13 01:44:18

I'm not sorry if anyone changed plans! Fancy doing that on the say-so of some random people from the internet hmm

TheNebulousBoojum Tue 02-Apr-13 07:38:39

I do think that there were enough heavy hints dropped on the thread for it to be fairly obvious what was going on.

LillethTheCat Tue 02-Apr-13 08:10:46

Where has this actual snow come from, its snowing quite hard here. I was totally not expecting it angry

MandragoraWurzelstock Tue 02-Apr-13 08:53:00

Yes Toby. Fancy hmm

It does appear that a stream of scattered snow showers has set itself up across the north today (not a spoof!) lilleth, it should be over quickly but you may get more.

We went to Peebles yesterday, and the DCs played in knee deep snow, so Kitten's spoof forecast wasn't too far out, as long as you count Scotland's super late spring.
It's not every year they get to make snow angels in Aprilshock.
