Spring Watch

(57 Posts)

I'm hoping that soon the snow watch threads will be a dim and distant memory.
There is hope on the horizon! GFS is showing some early indications of a warm up for the Easter Weekend. now admittedly earlier this morning it was more optimistic and had some lovely warm temps showing for the 26th, but nevertheless there is a trend beginning to show.

So, what will the next few model runs bring? will hope spring eternal? Or will we be forever be stuck in this winter of discontent?

WowOoo Wed 13-Mar-13 13:12:13

Thanks OYBBK!

Did anyone watch Orbit on BBC recently? I was paying close attention to the Spring and March bits and when it's meant to arrive.

It may still be on iPlayer. Interesting prog.

WowOoo Wed 13-Mar-13 13:12:59

'it's' being Spring. Am too tired to make sense, sorry.

LillethTheCat Wed 13-Mar-13 13:45:16

Marking place on this exciting thread. Looking forward to being able to do my garden, go for long country walks, hanging my washing out and generally having no snow.

<realises that I live in Brittain so will probably rain all summer anyway>

GloriaSmud Wed 13-Mar-13 14:54:33

Hard to believe anything Spring~like is coming when I'm sitting here watching yet another snow flurry come down. It's 6.3C out there and it's still snowing ~ how does it manage that!

That would be lovely, a nice warm Easter.

SirEdmundFrillary Wed 13-Mar-13 14:59:58

It begins.

Does anyone else get a bit jittery around spring or is it just me? I like it but also don't.

AnyFucker Wed 13-Mar-13 15:07:46

I get jittery because I hope against hope for a nice spring/summer. But then don't want to get hopes high after one nice day because they will be dashed.

Crap summers since 2006....it's getting beyond a joke now.

LillethTheCat Wed 13-Mar-13 15:16:37

AF - Im going through the 7 year cycle theory and that means either this year or next we will have lovely summers.

Also going by that we have another 3 or 4 years of long snowy winters I think?

AnyFucker Wed 13-Mar-13 15:18:46

I hope so, Lilleth

It feels like I won't see another nice summer in my lifetime < whiny ole gimmer >

SirEdmundFrillary Wed 13-Mar-13 16:58:02

I hope against hope too, AnyFucker

me likeysmile come on spring

New date being thrown up by GFS this morning for the start of spring - 25th March smile

digerd Thu 14-Mar-13 08:25:31

That's good news. However, we had -2 last night and for the first time had frost. < oh dear my Camelias>
Beautiful sunny morning and no wind atm.

LillethTheCat Thu 14-Mar-13 09:50:45

Yey that's just over a week to go then.

Pascha Thu 14-Mar-13 10:27:45

Oh good. I'm fed up with being stuck indoors because of the snow and rain with a whiny toddler who doesn't like it.

Bring on the Spring smile

Sorry all, I hate to break it to you but I have bought the kids loads of "outside toys" for this summer - therefore guaranteeing our first ever snowy summer! [grin

ArielThePiraticalMermaid Thu 14-Mar-13 22:32:43

Now when you say "warm" does this mean something akin to the "BBQ summer" we ended up with in 2009 when the Met Office insisted they had been right all along because of the 0.2 degrees above the average temperatures along with the force 6 SW winds and constant mizzle?

Or are we talking a nice fat anticyclone over the Azores?

digerd Fri 15-Mar-13 07:08:41

+3 in the night and seems to have rained/snowed as ground is wet. At least that nasty wind has gone.

I do remember a nice summer since 2006, when I didn't need to water the garden, but had days of not too hot sunny weather, and was for me very pleasant. Can't do 30+ and humid anymore, and 2006 I do remember as awful as couldn't go out to water the garden until 9pm and was attacked by biting beasties . Days and too hot nights of itching like mad is not my idea of a lovely summer . And we had a hose-pipe ban and drought.

Ariel, we are talking over 10C grin
Which now seems to come to a sputtering start towards the end of next week. However it looks jolly wet for the forseeable future and perhaps snow for the early part of next week for northern england and Scotland

ArielThePiraticalMermaid Fri 15-Mar-13 10:45:01

Over 10C??? Mercy me <faints>

digerd Fri 15-Mar-13 15:13:44

Starting drizzling at 2.30pm, but temp. +9.

grin ariel, you have to start with little goals!

digerd Fri 15-Mar-13 18:38:30

Been raining hard since late afternoon, which is perfect for the plants. +7 atm

ArielThePiraticalMermaid Fri 15-Mar-13 19:55:23

Today I've been working outside all day in the worst weather since the dawn of time - icy, heavy rain and a cold blustery wind. Definitely looking forward to spring now.

digerd Sat 16-Mar-13 07:25:41

Gloomy wet and blustery this morning +6 degrees. Some people have already mowed the grass.
Remember in Germany, the grass never needed mowing until May.<
we had such long winters> And nobody moaned as it had always been like that.

digerd Sat 16-Mar-13 21:30:02

SUn came out in afternoon for little dog's walk < was raining this morning>.
Just had a down a real downpour, but think it's stopped as can't hear the pelting anymore.

digerd Sat 16-Mar-13 21:45:26

Just heard a loud clap of thunder, at +6 ?! Where is the hot air that is meeting the cold or is it the relative warm+6 meeting air much colder higher up?
Whatever, I am not amused.

Those storms this weekend felt like proper early spring weather!

Looking like next Wednesday is the start of more spring like temps, unfortunately accompanied by lots of rain, showing right through Easter weekend sad

digerd Mon 18-Mar-13 07:50:25

Freezing fog now lifting and sun trying coming through. +1 only atm

LillethTheCat Mon 18-Mar-13 12:46:23

As long as the temps go up a bit, I can't afford to buy any more oil for a while and this cold weather means that a lot more is being used.

digerd Mon 18-Mar-13 13:06:08

Clouding over now, after a lovely morning walking little dog. Looking a bit ominous for dreaded rain this afternoon at 3pm. +9 degrees atm.
Have ordered little dog a complete coverage rain trouser suit, but with no hat, I'm afraid. For my benefit, not hers. < lazy and guilty face>. She'll probably refuse to walk in it. < oh, well, thought I'd try to make my life easier face>

digerd Mon 18-Mar-13 13:14:19

Pouring down now. Why am I always right? <fed up face>

digerd Mon 18-Mar-13 20:06:11

Saw some miniture daffs blooming in a sheltered garden this afternoon.
Spring has arrived!

Meglet Mon 18-Mar-13 21:53:34

I hope it warms up soon. I need to wash my winter coat, I dread to think how much dirt has built up.

Spring seems to be postponed until next saturday at the earliest and GFS has what could prove to be a rather impressive temporary snow storm on Good Friday. Lets hope that vanishes off the models.

LillethTheCat Wed 20-Mar-13 15:42:54

It keeps going back later and later this spring. We have just ordered some new heaters today so at least that wont be a waste of money just yet, though can't afford to buy any more oil until summer so it better not be too much longer

travellingwilbury Wed 20-Mar-13 15:50:49

I want and need spring to happen soon .

Everyone I see is grumpy and down .

This snow on good Friday kitten , please tell me it isn't in the south ?

trsvellingwilbury, it would be one of those snow turning to rain events but if it came off it would depend on exactly where the low pressure ended up.

travellingwilbury Wed 20-Mar-13 17:06:07

Thank you kitten , I will keep my fingers crossed .

digerd Wed 20-Mar-13 17:09:23

really miserable today, very damp cold. Even my stoic male neighbour complained it was too cold for him.
I've returned to hibernation mode.
Getting lighter earlier but not so much in the evenings
Looks like dusk already here.

Meglet Wed 20-Mar-13 21:53:57

<<sobs due to lack of sunshine>>.

MooncupGoddess Thu 21-Mar-13 12:02:37

Cheery article in the Torygraph here:

It's like Narnia, always winter but never Christmas!

AmandinePoulain Thu 21-Mar-13 14:37:06

That article makes me want to cry. I am sitting here in layers with freezing fingers remembering the picnics we were having this time last year. Dd1 had chicken pox just before Easter and I can clearly remember playing in the garden whilst we were stuck at home sad

I think this might be all my fault anyway, ever since I started maternity leave last July the weather has been diabolical. I'm going back in May so perhaps that'll improve things <hopeful>. We bought a campervan 18 months ago dreaming of nights away and cheap holidays. Ha bloody ha, we've managed to get out in it twice, and one of those times it was so wet and windy we couldn't keep the awning up, and that was in June! June ffs! Poor dd2 doesn't know what it's like to feel warm and dry outside sad

Well worth popping over to the snow watch thread.

This is the eternal winter of our gloom.

I'm afraid the latest GFS run postpones spring until the Tuesday after Easter.

Stupid weather.

Wallace Thu 21-Mar-13 20:50:55

Springwatch: Loads of snowdrops and some crocuses in sheltered spots. Have been hearing woodpeckers for a few days. Have seen Oyster catchers smile

Was -8 last night but got up to 3 degrees this afternoon. Bitterly cold wind and light snow showers.

Nature is determined to try and wake up despite the weathers best efforts isn't it!
I love the fact that there is more light in the morning now.

Wallace Thu 21-Mar-13 21:10:24

Me too apart from toddler waking at 6 every morning!

It would be interesting to see sunrise/sunset times from around the country.

Sunrise 0614 Sunset 1832

Forgot to put Location - Highlands, up towords Inverness.

Wallace Thu 21-Mar-13 21:10:38

Sunrise 05:55
Sunset 18:13

Pretty far down south!

digerd Fri 22-Mar-13 09:17:54

Definitely been dawn at around 5am here for a couple of weeks, as I feel I must get up - no way! Can't wait for the clock to go forward so I can feel right getting up and the days will be light longer which is the most important thing.
Snow supposed to be worse in the Midlands with SE also getting some < grimace face>

as spring has utterly vanished from the models now I've started a general forecast thread here

AmandinePoulain Sat 23-Mar-13 18:28:34

That is all

digerd Sat 23-Mar-13 20:28:13

Been grumpy all day. Faced the afternoon blizzard to go to chemist for my pills and potions, and it was shut !! Took little dog out and she hated it so we went home after 5 minutes. It took me longer than 5 minutes to get my eskimo outfit on and off. This morning's dog walk was OK as most of the snow had melted, but then returned with a vengence.

Was worried about DD driving to Milton Keynes , but she has just phoned to say she got there safely and the snow hasn't settled there. It did here, further south

Now worried about her drive back tomorrow.

In the process of hopefully uncancelling spring here

AmandinePoulain Mon 25-Mar-13 13:36:52

Well I've just gone out and bought dd1 a fleecy onesie and dd2 a sleeping bag with arms for when we go camping in 2 weeks in Brittany so watch the temperatures rise grin
