Snow Watch Part 4. The Winter continues....

(921 Posts)

met office warnings For tomorrow for Scotland and NW England, extending to Yorkshire. NW Scotlant in particular looks awful with blizzard conditions.

I'm not quite sure about the warnings for England, I'm going to be really interested to see how they pan out. Tuesday scattered sleet and snow showers for many.

Sparklingbrook Sun 03-Feb-13 16:43:39

shock OYBBK. I didn't order any so that's ok. Phew.

Here we go again. grin

I think we are clear here though. sad

digerd Sun 03-Feb-13 16:56:20

Have 7 degrees atm. No rain or sun today, but this morning my hands were frozen in my usual gloves, so this afternoon they were lovely and warm in my sheepskin ones . <smile>

LillethTheCat Sun 03-Feb-13 17:42:47

Just marking place.

The Yellow is not quite to me, but its not far off.

Oodsigma Sun 03-Feb-13 18:00:47

I don't want any thanks. Don't want dh stuck at work again, we have a funeral Tues am.

I'd love some. We had about 2 lovely days in London, then it all turned grey and dismal and melty.

I no longer listen to your empty promises of snow, OYBBK hmm grin

<very jealous of scotland people who get snow every year and to eat tablet too> envy

I wouldn't hold your breath manky! Nor you Stairs!
I'm still not terribly convinced for those in Yorkshire and the NW. I think that the main issue will be for Scotland, esp the NW.

A lot of rain for the SW on Tuesday I think. I wonder if another weather warning will be issues for them.

Oodsigma Sun 03-Feb-13 18:28:21

Liking your prediction oybbk smile

oricella Sun 03-Feb-13 18:33:12

kitten, can you point me towards maps/radar where I can follow what's coming? We're covered by both wind and snow warning tonight. Still very calm at the moment

IwishIwasmoreorganised Sun 03-Feb-13 19:54:54

Glad I'm not in Scotland.

Good luck to you all up there.

rain today gives you some radar ( highly recommend the app) but other than that I'd keep an eye on the met office oricella.

oricella Sun 03-Feb-13 21:25:50

Thank you.. rain is here now, still way too warm for snow though

mumat39 Mon 04-Feb-13 00:28:02

Just marking my place. smile

Marking place smilethe met office app predict heavy snow for the early hours of tues morning for us (north lincs) confused

digerd Mon 04-Feb-13 07:25:11

South Herts
Well, full of surprises. Got up at 6.45am and already +9 degrees today. Newspaper just arrived and it says top temp +6? We'll see.

WoW that is certainly possible, but most likely in the north and the west of the county.

Looking at the situation briefly today, it does seem that the main risk of snow is in Scotland today. some atrocious conditions, please don't travel if you are in the warning areas without real consideration. For northern England (down to Lincolnshire) the risk isn't really until tonight and with rain first for many I'm really not sure how much accumulation will occur.

digerd Mon 04-Feb-13 08:38:37

South Herts
Sky is now clearing from the south and clouds breaking up where we are.

digerd Mon 04-Feb-13 08:49:09

Sun shining now and to north sky all blue - clouds in the south disappearing.
Might do some gardening.

Thanks kittensmile

<makes a desperate attempt to disable Manchester's snow shield before tomorrow>
Come on snow! grin

LostInWales Mon 04-Feb-13 10:32:38

Beautiful, beautiful morning in west Wales, car says it's 8.5 degrees and the beach was fantastic, sunny and not blowing a gale for once.

blackeyedsusan Mon 04-Feb-13 12:18:02

tuesday's map is rather yellow! #

Light hail showers, but very windy here in Manchester. Lovely sunny intervals, but bitter cold!

Labradorlover Mon 04-Feb-13 14:06:13

Lots of tablet eating but very little snow, as I'm too close to the Firth of Forth. See all that snow all of you had.......managed a morning sledging before it melted.....
Still not understanding the lack of Wind warning for the Lothians. Forth bridge shut to everything except car and the wind's fierce. Sunshine and full on heavy showers that are almost sleety here.

PigletJohn Mon 04-Feb-13 14:31:16

only 10-12C here on S coast but very sunny. The heating has turned itself off even though set to 20C, thanks to the solar gain. That will help with the has bill.

I have opened some windows.

Absolutely beautiful here today, but my, it's windy! Doesn't feel anywhere near cold enough to snow tonight.

digerd Mon 04-Feb-13 16:44:55

My heating has been on all day at 21 and I have not been warm enough to open the windows. But then in winter I get little sun in my sitting room as faces east.
+8 now outside and a clear sky.

Labradorlover Mon 04-Feb-13 17:04:46

If I opened some windows the contents of my house would be swirling about. Have tumble dried my coat 3 times today though........Oh and 2C now and still fecking windy.

an amber warning

in the mean time, I got a load of washing dry on the line today smile

Heavy snow for many in Scotland tonight. Turning increasingly snowy for those south of the border, down through Newcastle. I think also the Pennines could be an issue tonight and into tomorrow. Also Lincolnshire could see heavy snow.

Labradorlover Mon 04-Feb-13 18:24:07

a wee snow shower!

Damn! Thanks for the update kitten smile according to the met office app, it's supposed to be sleety/rainy this evening, so am I being stupid to hope that it won't stick?!

missorinoco Mon 04-Feb-13 19:26:53

Noooooo. Amber warnings, go away, and take the snow with you.

WoW it may well stick for a time, but your ground temp is probably not terribly cold so by tomorrow evening that, combined with a slight rise in temp might make tomorrow night awfully mushy.

leesmum Mon 04-Feb-13 21:06:47

Thanks for the updates Kitten, I only listen to your forecasts now...the rest are bobbins..fingers crossed for some snow in Nth Manchester!

Ok, that's great news, thank you grin

Well that was unexpected! We just had a thunder storm! Quite a lot of loud thunder, and lightning. We have had some very intense hail this evening too.

leesmum Mon 04-Feb-13 22:08:43

Whooping great big chunks of snow falling now!!

THUNDERSNOW! We have snow in Manchester. Big flakes but I think the ground is too wet after all the hail and rain for it to stick.

Yay manky!!!

Had a fright when mn went off line. amber warnings for parts of northern England too!

Leesmum, that's great! Shows that this is really convective in nature!

Manchester area may get its moment tonight smile

All in all, just shows I've still got a lot to learn smile

leesmum Mon 04-Feb-13 22:17:49

Yep it appears the snow hit us in nth manc and then moved over to MANKYS side of Manchester!

I'm off to bed, I wonder if I will wake up to a winter wonderland? I'm happy anyway, it's two years since I witnessed thunder snow!

LostInWales Mon 04-Feb-13 22:26:37

Big flash of lightening off to the north about 5 mins ago hardly heard the thunder though so must be far away, not sure if it was as far as Manchester though grin.

thundersnow here too. massive gusting winds. snow is sideways in it's falling...

And it can all feck off. I need to drive a new car tomo at stupid o'clock. I do not want to be doing this on snow and ice!!!!

Will it turn to rain towards first thing iyo oybbk? Bbc weather forecast suggested this but am reluctant to believe it.

EasyFromNowOn Mon 04-Feb-13 22:44:36

Not currently snowing here in North Staffs but it is blowing an absolute gale. Sounded like hail earlier but it was just rain being driven really hard by the wind!

About 5 miles south of Staffs Moorlands so hoping we avoid the snow.

Actually the way the gusts blew up and blew out, oybbk is it possible that there might have been a tornado come through from the storm?

mumat39 Mon 04-Feb-13 23:22:55

Hi BitchyDragons, just found this. I think OYBBK has mentioned it before as a good site. Torro

ArielThePiraticalMermaid Mon 04-Feb-13 23:33:11

IT'S SO WINDY!!!!!! I think my chimney might fall down <worried>

GoingGoingGoth Mon 04-Feb-13 23:50:34

Just peeped out of window, we've got snow! It missed us the last time -actually a little bit excited.

Pan Tue 05-Feb-13 00:03:13

manky - just been out to the bins and it's snowing in Glossop. Didn't see that one coming!

We could play road closure bingo. snake, cat, and woodhead... etc.

Pan Tue 05-Feb-13 00:09:58

oh yes. Snake and Woodhead will close. Just looked at BBC - forecast is for the white stuff all night and til tomorrow tea-time. The Snow Queen that is dd will be v happy in the morning.

The cat is already closed.

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot Tue 05-Feb-13 00:22:30

Well, not sure what tomorrow will bring here, so I'll just wait and see grin

PigletJohn Tue 05-Feb-13 00:44:53

7C on the sunny coast, although the forecast said mixed rain and snow. I see none.

Up in the North beyond Petersfield it might be bad though.

Blimey, it's been so warm down here on the South coast I'd forgotten about snow. DH travels regularly to Manchester, he's going to fall asleep when he leaves here in a t shirt and wake up in Siberian conditions isn't he!

reastie Tue 05-Feb-13 06:23:49

marking place on new thread

Oodsigma Tue 05-Feb-13 06:46:45

When dh left work last night there was no snow yet they were reporting hazardous driving on m6, 10 miles away !

Woken to a dusting of snow - I want more!

Yay, just a light dusting here grin Am delighted!

digerd Tue 05-Feb-13 07:39:33

South Herts
Those clear skies last night made the temperature sink to +1. Sky this morning again mainly blue. Still +1. No wind atm

Bitchydragons, I don't think so, I expect it was a gust front. However, if when you are out and about you find evidence of damage please can you pm me and I'll have a chat with those with access to backdated radar etc. Thanks smile

Sparklingbrook Tue 05-Feb-13 07:43:05

Morning OYBBK. Worcestershire calling. It's really cold. sad Windscreen not frozen but car roof is. confused

Virgil Tue 05-Feb-13 07:44:50

We have about an inch here in Notts and there is still a little coming down. Red skies in the distance so possibly more on the way?

GoingGoingGoth Tue 05-Feb-13 08:16:47

Slight covering in Glasgow. It should last the school run, but not enough for snowballs sad

imogengladhart Tue 05-Feb-13 08:19:40

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Pan Tue 05-Feb-13 08:27:37

Local schools closed round here.

PigletJohn Tue 05-Feb-13 09:25:37

sunny, heating off, windows open (again)

Bit gusty last night up to 30kph and heavy shower.

Sparklingbrook Tue 05-Feb-13 09:26:30

It's snowing now. sad That wasn't meant to happen. angry

Gridlock in my neck of the woods - no sign of a gritter.

Dh had to go the long way to work as there was an accident on the M60.

More snow/hail and lighning this morning, and its currently snowing again.

Schools are open here but the way it is snowing it wouldn't surprise me if they close early.

OYBBK It would't surprise me if it was a gust front. But the way it stomped through and the weather went from a little bit of hail to BAM crash woosh did make you wonder if it might be a possibility. If I hear anything I will pm you.

Alternating between blue sky with bright sunshine/blizzard and hail. No idea what it will be from one minute to the next!

Bright sunshine a minute ago, now dark skies and hail! and snow!

LillethTheCat Tue 05-Feb-13 10:34:08

A bit of snow here (North Yorkshire), but nothing much. Its pretty much gone now though. According to Met Office it might snow a bit this aft, but its due to rain later.

digerd Tue 05-Feb-13 11:16:04

South Herts
There was ice on my Wheely bin this morning. But still sunny and very cold wind.

EasyFromNowOn Tue 05-Feb-13 14:03:46

North Staffs - snow just hit here. Massive flakes, and it is really swirly because the wind is still so bad. Doesn't look to be settling so far <crosses fingers>

Pan Tue 05-Feb-13 14:04:35

Crumbs. It's coming down like billio here. Whatever billio is like.

awaywego1 Tue 05-Feb-13 14:20:27

Sheffield has had loads today-woke to about 3 inches. Stopped for a couple of hours and now back on with a vengeance.

Started again here about 2ish, still going now, but not as heavy. It's starting to lie again now though.

StillSlightlyCrumpled Tue 05-Feb-13 15:28:32

Snowing here, Leics, quite hard. Will now be doing the anxious foot shuffling wait of anxiousness till DS2 gets home in his taxi. His school is quite a way away. I really felt the temperature drop quite suddenly too.

Hope it doesn't linger too long.

Woah, where did this snow come from?! I diligently checked my met office app before I left the house to pick DS up from preschool and it just said cloudy until rain this evening confused Got to preschool and it started snowing big fat flakes and is still going half an hour later confused

StillSlightlyCrumpled Tue 05-Feb-13 15:36:54

Actually forget that. I think the sudden drop in temperature was because I hadn't shut the back door properly after letting the dog our blushhmmgrin.

grin At crumpled

Well, I just checked again, this is definitely rain according to the met office hmm I never knew rain could make everything look so white!

Oodsigma Tue 05-Feb-13 16:15:49

Met office spot on here. Sleet at 12 pm exactly as the funeral cars arrived hmm

I wonder if its a case of evaporative cooling WoW. If heavy rain or snow falls into dry air it can cool the air down as it evaporates. This can take the air to below zero and make it snow when all other factors reckon it should be rain.

ood sad

TeWiSavesTheDay Tue 05-Feb-13 16:23:15

Snowing in south midlands, weather forecast was rain.

It was really sunny this morning! And only the wind was cold iyswim.

Any yet here I've got a washing line full dry and been admiring my new snowdrops peeking out (was a bit worried about them as I'd moved them last spring)

mind you, the wind is bitter and the heating was broke at work....

sad Ood

Really interesting explanation, Kitten, thank you smile
It seems to have stopped now smile But we are supposed to have more 'rain' later, could this fall as snow too?confused

digerd Tue 05-Feb-13 17:26:17

I did my washing yesterday late afternoon and hung it on curtain rails and my picture rail and some radiators in rooms other than where I sit. I don't have anything that needs ironing <grin, smug face>.
Really cold NE wind .
+4 here atm. Just looked at the sky, but as dark don't know if it is blue sky still. Humidity out says only 65% so relatively dry - when cloudy is always 80%.
South Herts. Fearing a below freezing temp tonight unless it clouds over

It might do, but looking at reports a right old mix is falling!

The snow is bucketing down here in North Suffolk! There was nothing at 5pm and now the whole garden and path is covered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oooo, now thats a bit unexpected (at least by me Lottie!!)

Sparklingbrook Tue 05-Feb-13 18:38:06

OYBBK, I have had two texts now saying 'snow tomorrow' but that can't be right. confused I am sure Worcestershire isn't due any is it?

digerd Tue 05-Feb-13 18:39:01

South Herts
It'd been raining, I just noticed. So at least the night temp will be milder. So why was my humidity saying 65%% - now 69% ?? That's weird.

digerd Tue 05-Feb-13 18:51:02

ps unless skies clear or it turns to snow in the night. Put my heating up at 6pm as was too cold.

redwellybluewelly Tue 05-Feb-13 18:58:40

Bat Shit Crazy Snow now here - got a good two inches in Norwich - started at approx 4.30pm as I was walking back from the shop and it stopped about half an hour ago

bloody hate snow nothing on any of my weather websites and surprised by the size of the flakes, they were huge! (Had some on Saturday too btw but didn't stick around about 2pm)

Wow! OYBK We dont often catch you out!! shock

grin Lottie, I thought it would be sleety down your way!

Sparkling, I dont think you are!

digerd, as it cools the air can hold less moisture so the relative humidity goes up.

Sparklingbrook Tue 05-Feb-13 19:30:36

My own Mother and my best mate lying to me OYBBK. shock

How could they!!!! shock
what if I'm wrong!

Sparklingbrook Tue 05-Feb-13 19:35:40

I will need to get them to reveal their sources OYBBK. I can't find any sniff of snow on any forecast anywhere. grin

TobyLerone Tue 05-Feb-13 20:40:17

We had some sleet this evening. I was surprised, as I didn't think it was really cold enough. My car said it was 5.5C.

PigletJohn Tue 05-Feb-13 23:52:18

this is reminding me how glad I am not to work up North any more.

Sparklingbrook Wed 06-Feb-13 07:19:50

Me and OYBBK were right!! No snow. Ha!!!

<worries it will come later and we get snowed in>

digerd Wed 06-Feb-13 07:21:49

South Herts
Minimum temp out +3. So no frost or snow, but had rain, I think.
Skies cloudy atm.

Whilst many places may get snow showers over the next couple of days, the primary risk for snow is through Eastern Coastal counties, esp Norfolk and parts of Suffolk.

met office warnings

Sparkling, I think you will be ok smile

Although sparkling, there are some showers on the radar with your name on, that may end up being snow (even though I don't think they will lie for long)

All our snow has now gone again.............Cant believe it has vanished so quickly..........confused

It was rather warm for it! I think it might be a continuing theme for you for the next couple of days!

digerd Wed 06-Feb-13 08:39:27

South Herts
Skies clearing now with lots of blue bits. Has been the pattern for us recently - lots of sunshine. But only +3 still.
I want that lovely + 12 and sunny day that we had before - once. <did I dream it?>

LostInWales Wed 06-Feb-13 10:47:59

As I'm ignoring my homework to bring you the West Wales Weather update -: Mae hi'n bwrw cesair yng Gymru ac yn y bore roedd hi'n wyntog iawn. Sorry, hopefully that says it is hailing in Wales and this morning was very windy. I could barely breathe on the beach, there must be a technique for that, explorers can't surely walk backwards so they can breathe if it's windy the direction they are going, they'd get nowhere.

So, please tell me there are going to be no freak downpours in the east Wales area as DS2 is on a school trip down a mine (why? Why do they take my precious babies underground all the time, is it because they are Welsh?). It gives me the heebiejeebies anyway.

pepperrabbit Wed 06-Feb-13 10:49:57

Cold, cloudy and spitting in NE Hants.
Perfect birthday weather - not!

mumat39 Wed 06-Feb-13 11:52:18

Happy birthday pepperrabbit thanks and wine

Kitten, on the snow watch forum, there's talk of possibly more snow at the weekend. What do you think, oh wise all seeing one of MN weather?

We haven't had any snow or frost the last few days, just lots of rain and wind yesterday. A few spots so far today and not as cold as I thought it would be. Everyimei see rain I want to just go back to bed. Surely the sky must have rained itself out by now. hmm

Happy Birthday pepper smile

Up in Scotland, esp the north on Sunday/evening into Monday theres the possibilty of heavy snow.

Also sunday has the potential to bring either a lot of snow or a lot of rain to the south. or, maybe nothing much at all! Theres no way of calling it yet. The models look very very different. The ECMWF model makes no sense at all to me. GFS hardly brings the weather system across the UK at all and the UKMO which brings in what looks to be sensible solution shows a system on the slightly warm side of what we need for widespread snow.

Watch this space!

lostinwales - your post made me laugh!

pepperrabbit Wed 06-Feb-13 14:11:54

Thanks ladies! Funnily enough I was on a weather thread for my birthday last year! It snowed and several dinner guests couldn't make it so I ate my own body weight in poached salmon.
Takeaway tonight.
Flippin' freezing here, sat indoors with my scarf on.

Bumbledog and I just got absolutely drenched whilst out walking in the fields!! I have had to change my trousers now and I have to go out again in a few minutes to collect my friends daughter from school! There was mud mud mud and more mud. I had to slosh through the puddles to get the mud off my boots and then had to manhandle Bdog into the kitchen to towel dry him before he was allowed into the sitting room! he is now curled up in a tight ball beside me on the sofa fast asleep!!

digerd Wed 06-Feb-13 18:35:10

South Herts
Think we had a bit of sleet for a few minutes after 4pm. +3 atm, but feels cold and put the heating up again earlier than usual.
When is this NE biting wind going to go stop?

TwllBach Wed 06-Feb-13 19:21:44

North Wales here!

There was a bit of snow yesterday on the mainland, but not here. The wind is ferocious, though, and freezing.

I would give my right arm both arms and possibly a leg for a sudden down pour of snow this evening. I can't bear work at the moment sad

mumat39 Wed 06-Feb-13 19:39:55

The warnings map for the uk for Wednesday, looks like a Wimbledon with a pointy hat and glasses on, kneading a ball of dough. <i think I might be mad to say this out loud>

It's funny that the ice warning yellow is extended out to sea. Usually the just cover the land, I think? Is that right? Does this mean the sea might freeze? <I think that is a stupid question>

mumat39 Wed 06-Feb-13 19:40:35

A womble! Not a Wimbledon, though of course that's where they live.

Greater Manchester here - The snow turned to rain and by this morning it was all gone. sad

Today has been bitterly cold, but dry with sunny intervals.

There is talk in the playground of snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. What do you think OYBBK?

I see what you mean mumat, to me it looks like a gnome grin

Warnings extend out to the Scottish isles. No sea freeze this winter.

I'm not sure about Sunday itself, the cool down may come on the back edge of the weather front. however looking at the latest GFS run Sunday night into monday am looks rather interesting at the moment!

MegGriffin Wed 06-Feb-13 21:14:04

Hope we get some more in Sussex, fingers crossed.

Sleety snow here in Suffolk............But it isnt settling...... It is too wet!

lirael Wed 06-Feb-13 21:37:28

Any idea what Truro is looking like from Sun- Weds OYBK? Going on a half term break and hoping for some breaks in the weather...possibly...I know it's a bit much to ask in Feb!

ArielThePiraticalMermaid Wed 06-Feb-13 21:57:17

Truro will be...ahem....mixture of sunshine and showers and windy. Not too cold but with a windchill.

So the usual really grin

Will get back to you in the am smile

LostInWales Wed 06-Feb-13 22:29:12

Lots of heavy in and off hail here all day, was desperate for it to be grauple but sadly it was only boring hail. No wombles either hmm. On a plus point my son came back safe from down the mine grin.

Earthymama Wed 06-Feb-13 22:57:37

Lostinwales, DP and I have giggled over your post,

Imagine the scene,
Hordes of little Welsh People being herded towards Big Pit, (probably by sheepdogs) with Mams crying Why Oh Why are they taking our babbies down the Pit, deed to my goodness! They'll be filthy like Mwch yn du
Ych y fi!
And strict Pit inspectors saying sternly, Naw, come on now, lovely boys, lovely girls, stick with ewer butties, you MUST go underground, cos ewe are Welsh, en ewe!!
An keep walking backwards, or that nasty wind will get on yewer chest an ewe'll be under the doctor, mind my word!!
Excuse dreadful Welsh and Wenglish!! all made up!!

The met office are having a laugh today with their gnome warnings!

Snow risk is primarily in Scotland today with east coast snow showers probably fading out for all but those in Norfolk/Suffolk.

For Sunday GFS shows a fair bit of snow, esp away from the south where it shows it too warm. It then shows it cooling down and there being a snow risk in the south on Sunday night into Monday as well as a continued snow risk across the rest of the UK.

Met office forecast seems to agree up until Sunday night then it has it too dry in the south for snow down there and generally a drier picture away from the east. I'm not quite sure why looking at their charts, but there you go.

LostInWales Thu 07-Feb-13 08:18:27

Earthymama that made me grina bit like a cross between mining and It Ain't Half Hot Mum <hopes everyone is old enough to get the reference>

Beautiful red/pink sky this morning (I want to say mackerel clouds but I've forgotten already)

digerd Thu 07-Feb-13 09:49:23

South Herts
Bright blue skies from dawn and sun shining. 0 in the night. Outdoor sensor says 10 degrees, but feels much colder. Forecast says the cold wind will last until Sunday, just hope it's gone by Monday.

fatsatsuma Thu 07-Feb-13 12:13:52

Just seen that the met office have put out a yellow warning for snow for most of England Wales and Scotland for Sun and Mon! They are very vague however in the accompanying text - interesting though that they've put out the earnings so far in advance given the degree of uncertainty.

oh yes fatsatsuma smile warnings they must be picking up on uncertainties in their model. Fascinating! If the worst case scenario came off it would be a very interesting monday morning....

Worth noting that there might be some sneaky sleet and snow on Saturday too and perhaps Saturday night......

Although the uncertainty is huge for Sunday/Mondays weather I would be prepared for heavy snow fall just in case, even in the south. Its all down to exactly where the low pressure ends up over the UK and any other features that crop up. I'd say that Sunday lunchtime onwards is the time to watch out (at first theres a warm sector that is modelled across the south that needs to get out of the way).

Will obviously keep you updated as much as work and circumstances allow.

TobyLerone Thu 07-Feb-13 14:12:55

Ooooh, fingers crossed!

laughalot Thu 07-Feb-13 14:19:18

ooooh I say looks interesting !!!!!

Blimey, that's coming out of the blue if it hits us down here on the South Coast. I think everyone's forgotten about the snow!

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot Thu 07-Feb-13 16:55:27

Ooooh more little snowmen grin maybe

Manchester snow? <crosses fingers hopefully> Or are we still under the curse of the snow shield?

leesmum Thu 07-Feb-13 17:07:01

InMySpareTime i'm Manchester too........KITTEN when you say Snow, do you mean a dusting or a ton of the stuff!!!

I'm totally mentally moved on to spring mode so not at all excited but I suppose I could be tempted.shall be watching updates with interestgrin

Trying not to get my hopes up here!

digerd Thu 07-Feb-13 18:21:05

I've had withdrawal symptoms since we had that one spring like day - can't wait for it.
Just now was out walking the dog and the icy wind has subsided although it is only +4 atm it felt quite mild.

Banderchang Thu 07-Feb-13 18:46:24

OYBBK, any idea what Durham/Newcastle will be like on Tuesday? I need to get to an important appointment and am wondering whether to rearrange if the trains won't be running!

MegGriffin Thu 07-Feb-13 19:52:31

Kitten can I ask a question please? On our London and the south east yellow warning it says up tp 10 cm on Sunday and also on the Monday warning. Do you think worse case we could get up to 20 cm??

schilke Thu 07-Feb-13 20:14:41

The south east warning makes me laugh. Snow warning, but heavy rain forecast!

schilke that is funny but makes me cry! I want snow, lashings of it!! grin

schilke Thu 07-Feb-13 20:34:06

Behindlocknumbernine - I want it to snow too. I had forgotten all about snow and had moved on to the idea of spring. However, one mention on here and I'm back obsessively checking various weather websites. I even looked on metcheck - just for a thrill, you understand - they have forecast really heavy snow all Sunday night in my area. Sigh, if only it would come true!

Meg, hypothetically..... But I didn't want to say anything because it very well may not happen. But technically speaking I think it is possible.

Bamderchang too early to say, this system isn't at all pinned down yet. I'm sorry I can't help more at the moment but I will post updates. I think disruption is moderately likely.

PeneloPeePitstop Thu 07-Feb-13 21:20:01

Thing is though we're under the snow warning it's still showing as heavy rain on met office... Am in north Sussex/Surrey borders and really confused?

hopenglory Thu 07-Feb-13 21:24:39

Oh we even have a warning (again) for snow on Monday for Devon shock

Wishful thinking I reckon grin

MegGriffin Thu 07-Feb-13 21:26:49

Snowing here at the moment! Big fat blobs in west sussex. Didn't expect that at all.
Thanks kitten, fingers crossed for 20cm.

Meglet Thu 07-Feb-13 21:30:47

sad. Please no more snow, no more cold <<wails>>.

Marking place to keep an eye on things.

MegGriffin Thu 07-Feb-13 21:34:26

Think its going to turn to rain but temporarily has a coverering on the wheel bin, tops of cars and grass.

I would really really like snow on Sunday night into Monday in S Herts/N London as I REALLY want a snow day - still bitter envy

The following week (18th) we're heading north for half term and I do not want snow then. None.

Demanding I know grin

Ppp, it's because at the moment it looks more likely to be heavy rain. However there is a fairly reasonable chance that it may be heavy snow instead which obv would have a big impact. So they have to warn of the possibility.

PeneloPeePitstop Thu 07-Feb-13 22:10:14

Ahh ok. I'll hope for the white stuff but try not to be disappointed then wink

Tortoise Thu 07-Feb-13 22:56:10

Just seen on the weather possible snow in SW Sunday. I really hope we get some! grin

I really really really really want some snow..... North west Surrey here, please please please let it snow once more <crosses everything and does snow dance>

digerd Fri 08-Feb-13 07:15:21

-1 in the night and still is. Sky all CLEAR atm but sun not yet visible. No white frost either on the grass. Perhaps another sunny morning. Been lucky with the sunshine. While at the hospital, a winter flowing Jasmine shrub was in flower. Pining for spring, here.

Has been snowing here in Suffolk. Not a great deal but was quite hard when i went to put Bumbledog out for a wee. He poked his nose out of the door and then looked at me as if was off my trolley nd went back up the stairs to bed!

Not forgotten you all but ran out of time this morning. Will catch up with you all this evening. Sorry.

digerd Fri 08-Feb-13 08:29:19

Now sun is up can see the frost on the grass., but no wind. Just 0 degrees now. Another sunny day/ morning for us <smile>

-2 this morning, brrr.

Hope the snow forecast on Sunday doesn't last too long, got a busy week next week!

More sleet for London on Sunday then? Accumulations, my arse <still bitter> grin

GloriaSnow Fri 08-Feb-13 10:30:27

Not that cold here (Leicester) last night, down to -0.9C.

Interested to see whether we get any snow and how much over the weekend. According to the metoffice, we're down for heavy snow all through Sunday. Might have to bring the sledge out of storage!

MySweetPrince Fri 08-Feb-13 13:30:32

OYBBK - The forecaster on BBC South East this morning said that the low pressure system was difficult to predict and was "giving them gyp" - is this the new technical term for "haven't got a clue".hmm

mumat39 Fri 08-Feb-13 14:18:10

Poo and double poo!!!

The warning has moved away from us in SW London. I want snow but it doesn't look like we'll be getting any now. sad

It is MSP but it looks at the moment like the south will escape from it with Essex being the potential dividing line at the moment.

met office explanation

it may all still change.

mumat39 Fri 08-Feb-13 16:41:33

as the metoffice are usually over cautious with their warnings and the fact that the area no longer covers SW London and other areas, does this mean they're pretty confident that we won't get any?

I wouldnt read that much into it mumat.

digerd Fri 08-Feb-13 17:24:12

Clouded over again after 2pm- temp out now +4. Icy wind has gone < smile>

schilke Fri 08-Feb-13 17:56:34

No snow for me then, just more bloody rain. I like cold weather and I like snow, but I do not like rain.

digerd Fri 08-Feb-13 17:59:38

It's raining steadily atm. Just heard claps of THUNDER? Surely it's not warm enough for that.? And more rumblings in the distance.

digerd Fri 08-Feb-13 18:04:39

South herts
Now a burst of what sounds like hailstones??

It's been fairly mild here today, and dry. It did try to rain a little this afternoon, but 1t was only a few drops and passed over very quickly.

LillethTheCat Fri 08-Feb-13 19:05:54

Just seen this link on Facebook.

Is it true Kitten or is it just newspaper sensationalism? I know snow is coming, but is it really as bad as that?

<secretly looking forward to not having to go out monday morning>

Tortoise Fri 08-Feb-13 19:49:00

Local forecast changed to heavy rain for us in Somerset on Sunday sad

PeneloPeePitstop Fri 08-Feb-13 19:51:40

# sod off rain.... #

Lilleth, It is quite likely that some will see heavy snowfall, but who and how much is really difficult to tell at the moment. The highest snowfall totals at the moment look to be over higher ground and probably the Midlands upwards. Whether it will be the heaviest snow fall yet? No one really knows.

For instance, one of the models has suddenly come up with snow tomorrow morning for central southern England! That came out of the blue rather!

LillethTheCat Fri 08-Feb-13 20:46:13

Thanks Kitten

mumat39 Fri 08-Feb-13 20:49:52

Thanks kitten. I'll just keep everything crossed that we get some snow. Preferably lots and lots of big fat fluffy flakes so I can lie on the floor in my lounge and look out of the window and watch it fall. I love the snow.

If we get rain then I think I'll stay in bed.

Thanks again and hope you have a lovely weekend. The weather is fascinating so hope it's interesting in that sense too.

I'm hoping for a change in the forecast and for a foot of snow to hit us here grin

I hope you have a lovely weekend too smile

I'm not getting my hopes up really. I bet Manchesters snow shield will be in operation again. But I would love to be proved wrong. grin

PeneloPeePitstop Fri 08-Feb-13 21:13:57

Right with ya there, Kitten smile

Porkster Fri 08-Feb-13 21:18:36

At 6pm we had the most excellent thunder, lightning and massive hail storm whilst watching ds play football.

I want more snow!!

Very cool porkster smile

It is just possible that the snow risk for tomorrow/Monday may move further south. Don't get too excited at this point southerners, but be aware of the chance! The low pressure seems to be shifting south in some models. The further south it goes, the more the snow risk moves further south.

Need to get going now, back later smile

TobyLerone Sat 09-Feb-13 08:53:19

So the excitement is back on, then grin

MegGriffin Sat 09-Feb-13 08:59:11

When I watched the weather earlier, the graphics were showing further south again so everything crossed hard again.
Also our local bbc sussex weather lady did say could be rain or snow so there must be a chance still smile

Morning. Lovely big fat flakes here in Warwickshire for the last hour or so, and it's settling despite the rain we had last night!

I just saw some forecasts and it looks like the worst of it will pass to the south of us in Manchester again. sad

It is Toby!
And I'm taking it as a possibly Good Sign that we have some snow mixed in with the rain the am grin is the same model that showed this is bringing the snow risk further south tomorrow.

PeneloPeePitstop Sat 09-Feb-13 09:22:37

Snooooooooow!!! Squeeee!

SNOW here in Southampton! And apparently there was lying snow up near Henley this morning.

LillethTheCat Sat 09-Feb-13 11:12:52

No sign of any snow here in North Yorkshire. Although I think its forecast from tomorrow and it could be sleet as apposed to just snow. according to DH and not the met office

Bah. Turned to rain and now it's all gone sad

MegGriffin Sat 09-Feb-13 11:35:25

Weather warning has moved down a bit in the south east <excited>

No, no no, if it moves any further south it means even less chance for us.

Any one fancy a snow tug of war? grin

pepperrabbit Sat 09-Feb-13 11:47:42

NE Hants - We've had a glamorous mix of sleet/rain/snow all morning (which I'm sure wasn't forecast when I went to bed last night confused)
So cold, grey and a bit miserable really!
Forecast now is for sleet, drizzle, snow and heavy rain over the next 48 hours - I think they may be trying to cover all bases so no one can complain hmm

If there's a snow tug-of-war, I'm on Manky's team (heeeere snowy snowy, gooood snow, c'mere snow, you know you'll be very welcomesmile)

MegGriffin Sat 09-Feb-13 12:02:43

Now,now lets all share nicely <grabs corner of snow while nobody is looking>

Fingers crossed for snow in the south.

GloriaSnow Sat 09-Feb-13 12:39:12

Hoping for a nice lot of snow here <pulls snow Leicester way>

mumat39 Sat 09-Feb-13 12:43:38

Looks like it's still going to miss us even though it's moved south. sad

<heels dug in, firm grip on weather front>

MooseyMoo Sat 09-Feb-13 13:02:38

W Oxon
We had snow this morning, barely settling and is now more rain but every so often sleet.

reastie Sat 09-Feb-13 13:12:30

Keeping an eye on this thread for snow moving southwards. Met office seem to have extended warning of snow into Kent this morning.

Dry and grey here so far!

Dry and grey here so far!

We look like one of the only areas not in the warning area now grin

Pepper, the nae showed the sleety snowy rain mix last night.

Still unsure about tomorrow. need it to come This Way. <dashes up to Northampton and grabs an edge of the warning>

Still Wednesday might be rather good in my area......... smile

Pah, the bbc forecast now saying no snow for is.

schilke Sat 09-Feb-13 17:43:33

Ooh kitten spill the beans about Wednesday! Is mid surrey in the firing line?

Latest nae has snow scraping the Hampshire Berkshire border, so further south in central southern England than the met office warning and by Monday morning wOOHOO!!!!!! see here

And breathe.
Tis just one model and the way it changes every model run anyway.......

I often talk about how unpredictable snow can be and blimey, this one is impossible!

Schilke, possibly smile but as I (and it seems every other forecaster) is struggling with tomorrow (especially tomorrow night!) I think it's wise to not try and see too much into it at the moment!

Sparklingbrook Sat 09-Feb-13 17:59:00

None for us in Worcestershire. (Haven't looked at the forecast-I have just decided that).

So my current best guess for tomorrow is......

Tomorrow morning rain will move in rapidly across Wales and England. It will be snowy in the Pennines and the north east pretty much as soon as it reaches those areas. Elsewhere it may be a sleety wet snowy rainy sort of mix.

As we get to the evening it looks like it will become increasingly wintery in many places (with the exception I think of southern Wales, the Sw and the southern coastal counties)

Later on Sunday night I think that the snow risk may extend further south, not reaching the coast apart from maybe Kent and west sussex. i think that the Berkshire/north Hampshire/Surrey/oxfordshire area may possibly be in for a pleasant surprise come Monday morning too.
Manchester doesn't to seem to get a lot from what I can see I'm afraid

Remember the above is subject to massive uncertainty!!!!!

Sparklingbrook Sat 09-Feb-13 18:11:53

Thanks OYBBK. I think I may have to prepare myself that there may be some.

fatsatsuma Sat 09-Feb-13 18:16:59

OYBBK, I'm so pleased that (at this stage at least grin) you have a reason to hope for snow, knowing that you are a fellow snow-lover.

One question I have is over temperatures - I am watching the forecast for our area (n oxon) and the possibility of snow seems to come and go - but it doesn't seem cold enough - now or later on when the snow is forecast. How does that work?

GloriaSnow Sat 09-Feb-13 18:22:30

<keeps pulling snow Leicester way>
The forecasts I've seen on News24 this afternoon have been reflecting that forecasters are struggling with where/how much snow will fall over our way ~ methinks I'll be doing a lot of 'lamp-post watching' tomorrow evening/night!
A poster on met-monkey mentioned Wednesday as another possible 'snow day' too.
<polishes sledge again>

Fatsatsuma, even if the air temp close to the ground isn't cold enough, if the rest of the layers of air that the snow goes through is it can often stay as snow. How long it lasts on the ground for is another matter, but it takes heat to mel the snow and so the ground cools as more and more snow hits it and melts. Eventually, hopefully it can then stay for a bit. Once you get a decent layer of snow on the ground it also cools the air above it.

We may get some evaporative cooling into play too, where if precipitation falls through a drier layer of air, even if that air is above zero, as the precip evaporates it takes heat out of the air and cools it down.

fatsatsuma Sat 09-Feb-13 18:39:39

Thanks OYBBK that's a very helpful explanation.

I knew it. Who stole my snow? angry

Me grin
<runs away>

nellyjelly Sat 09-Feb-13 20:38:41

Pah! We never seem to get any in Manchester. Fed up.

Give it back!

Latest nae has down graded the snow for cs England sad Kent look to be positioned well as is a good part of the midlands and the welsh borders.

OYBBK the forecast seems to be changing hourly for both Herts and London. From heavy snow to light snow to sleet to rain - and back again!!

What do you think will happen oh weather guru?

reastie Sun 10-Feb-13 05:47:05

OYBBK when you mean kent is positioned well do you mean to get lots of snow or to escape the snow?!

TobyLerone Sun 10-Feb-13 07:40:31

If I know OYBBK, she'll have meant that Kent is going to get bucketloads of it!

<hopeful smile>

What time? I haven't panic-bought anything!

leesmum Sun 10-Feb-13 08:07:26

Raining here in Nth Manchester, and looks like rain is going to win over snow for us today.....not fair [sulking]

TobyLerone Sun 10-Feb-13 08:11:17

Birds are singing here and it doesn't sound like the road outside is wet (still in bed and cba to get up). Going to watch DS's rugby match this morning, so I hope it's not too cold. Then got to take DD's friend home, right out in the middle of nowhere. THEN the blizzards can begin grin

Raining here in North Yorkshire too sad. I woke up this morning hoping for lots of snow but nothing.

Suppose I better go and organise rugby kit sad

Nat38 Sun 10-Feb-13 08:20:58

Rain here in Leicestersad Need snow for the kids, then they can have free fun while it`s half termgringrinblush
Not happy that boiler broke though on Friday, so no heatingsad British Gas came yesterday, boiler needs new motor which he did not have, so coming back tomorrow!

Rooneyisalwaysmoaning Sun 10-Feb-13 08:22:42

Tobes it's wet here (kent) but v cold. Met office says heavy snow from 6pm tnight, into tomorrow grin

TobyLerone Sun 10-Feb-13 08:32:01

Perfect! See you on the big hills with the sledges on our snow day tomorrow wink

Hopeful for Kent now though sometimes it seems to miss is as we are very near the coast in the east of the county.

The ground looks quite dry out there which bodes well.

I'm gonna have a look at the radar, see what's afoot.

Whatever it is it's getting closer.

TobyLerone Sun 10-Feb-13 08:49:28

Really? Pleasebesnowpleasebesnowpleasebesnow!

Nat- that was always expected til later. Don't lose hope!

latest NAE once again bringing snow further south than the met office warnings. A lot of people will have to wait until this evening/night before they see snow (if they get any)

2gorgeous, I think later for you too. It seems to be taking longer to turn to snow in your area than the models were showing, but I think it will happen by this evening. (No guarantees though, it's already misbehaving)

Snowing here now grin but it's too wet to settle.

Kent looks like this evening.
To be honest the situation is so utterly marginal that the best thing for people to do is look out of the window and see what is happening. All sorts of things are going to make a difference today, including even small changes in elevation. I've still not given up hope for my area, it is possible we may get lots, or none. I know that most of the day will be rain though.

Yay 2 gorgeous, it's back on track! Naughty weather!

mumat39 Sun 10-Feb-13 09:10:24

It's damp, grey and dreary here with rain.

That NAE chart looks promising! I find this will it won't it snow excitement a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. It's very strange how excitable I get at the merest mention of snow. <fingers crossed emoticon>

mumat39 Sun 10-Feb-13 09:12:09

Ooooh. That snow in New York looks amazing! Although it's. shame so many are without a power. They've been hit badly in the last few months what with sandy and now this. Hope everyone's ok out there.

Will some of that weather make it's way over here?

EndoplasmicReticulum Sun 10-Feb-13 09:13:22

I'm using the "looking out the window" forecasting advice - I'd describe what is falling out of the sky as light sleet. (North Yorkshire)

Too cold and wet to go out for a walk, not cold and snowy enough for any fun.

Husband has gone on possibly foolish outing to South Yorkshire, I told him not to expect any sympathy if he gets stuck trying to get back later on.

PeneloPeePitstop Sun 10-Feb-13 09:30:10

Raining now. Come on cold air, pleeeeeeease

Not actually raining but wet on the ground here in SE London.

I would be amazed if we get snow, I expect a bit of sleet will be as good as it gets. MEH!

schilke Sun 10-Feb-13 09:39:17

Just off to walk the dog. She looks as thrilled as I do....wet, cold & grey. Then a football match to watch in the rain. I want snow!

Rain becoming pretty heavy here in Herts. Cold, damp and miserable sad

It's raining here, not to bad, but enough to put Mankyboy2 in a bad mood - he is going to be wet while playing in goal today!

schilke Sun 10-Feb-13 10:02:11

Just before I walk the dog, had one more look at met office. Heavy rain all day, but then heavy snow midnight - 6am.

Must not get excited as I'm sure it'll change in an hour or two....

TobyLerone Sun 10-Feb-13 10:26:31

Crap drizzly rain in my part of Kent. We're sitting in the car waiting for the rugby match to start and it's bloody freezing sad

Fog here (north lincs). Looks very touch and go whether we'll get any though! Maybe Weds though.

Sparklingbrook Sun 10-Feb-13 11:26:40

Pouring with rain in Worcestershire. Ark or sledge? grin

EndoplasmicReticulum Sun 10-Feb-13 11:26:49

Nah, this is rubbish. Very light drizzle. BBC weather said we'd have "heavy snow" all morning. They are wrong.

pepperrabbit Sun 10-Feb-13 11:34:45

5 degrees and heavy rain here. Bleurgh.

digerd Sun 10-Feb-13 11:38:27

South Herts.
Was +3 in the night but already +5 at 7am < mmm, mild I thought>. At 9am it started raining. At 9.40 it had stopped, so took little dog out for a 30 minute walk. It did begin to drizzle but was tolerable. Feels colder than yesterday, but must have been the WET cold.
Next walk < in the mud> is at 3pm - so keeping fingers crossed it is not pouring down then.

Sparklingbrook Sun 10-Feb-13 11:38:35

Quick thread hijack to say this is on, on Tuesday, if anyone is interested.

Hulababy Sun 10-Feb-13 11:42:04

Snow here, up the hill in Sheffield. Woke to a covering, still snowing now though lightly. But farmer gritted the estate this morning, so our roads are fine. DH has taken the car out to take DD to a party and says it is all fine. Good job - we have family coming later for a birthday meal!

Drizzling in east kent, chuffing freeeezing though.

LillethTheCat Sun 10-Feb-13 13:09:10

Very wet in North Yorkshire. I did see the odd flake earlier, but nothing exciting. If it does snow here, I can't see it laying with all the rain about.

Steady drizzle here - horrible - but not too cold!

PeneloPeePitstop Sun 10-Feb-13 13:57:05

Temp has dropped a couple of degrees here, could that be significant?

According to the beeb in about an hour it should be snowing heavily. hmm

EndoplasmicReticulum Sun 10-Feb-13 15:03:57

DamnDe - I would be inclined not to believe them. The beeb reckon it's been snowing heavily all day here (looks out of window at rain).

Has anyone had any snow yet?

Our rain is turning to sleet! grin

digerd Sun 10-Feb-13 15:25:44

PeneloPeePitstop Sun 10-Feb-13 15:31:36

No rain or snow here in Suffolk. Very windy though!

GloriaSnow Sun 10-Feb-13 15:50:48

Just a reminder about uksnow ~ a few snow reports coming in now as temps drop.

MegGriffin Sun 10-Feb-13 16:14:46

Heavy snow here West Sussex near Gatwick. Ground very wet though so not sure of it will settle.

mumat39 Sun 10-Feb-13 16:47:38

rain all day and a bit of sleet mixed in earlier but not much. It's been so grey all day.

Still grey and a bit damp here - nothing exciting, all a bit dull!

fatsatsuma Sun 10-Feb-13 16:54:28

Here in N Oxon, wet snow falling rapidly since about 4pm, beginning to settle despite the wetness. Earlier than expected.

Rooneyisalwaysmoaning Sun 10-Feb-13 16:56:20

Heavy snow in Kent now. It's too wet to settle on roads/paths but is a bit on the grass.

PeneloPeePitstop I am in East Kent and we now have snow!!!! Starting to lay on the grass and the cars to. grin

MegGriffin Sun 10-Feb-13 16:59:29

Slowed down now and is sleety again.
Its trying to settle on the grass and cars
. It will be interesting to see what will happens overnight.
I have a hospital appointment tomorrow pm so really would be better if it stops but I do love it so.

Sparklingbrook Sun 10-Feb-13 17:14:15

Still raining here in Worcestershire.

fatsatsuma Sun 10-Feb-13 17:40:21

OYBBK have you got some snow down there? I hope it's heading your way.

Just wondering what to make of the early arrival of the snow up in these parts? It's really looking very business-like out there - the roads are now looking slippery and there's a few centimetres accumulating. It seems to be about 3 hours ahead of all the forecasts. Does this mean the fronts are moving more quickly, or is there more snow around than was expected? Obviously I'm not complaining grin but just wondering if what we have now is what we should have had later, or whether this might mean that we will end up with a nice lot of snow tomorrow.

PestoFrostissimos Sun 10-Feb-13 17:49:08

OYBBK It's snowing, and settling <hurls self to floor crying>

I'll swap sparkling! I could really do with a day off work tomorrow!

Nothing, and nothing forecast either sad
oybbk, do you have anything encouraging to say, or is it definately not going to hit North West Surrey?

Sparklingbrook Sun 10-Feb-13 22:45:51

grin OYBBK, and my Mother didn't warn me of this. shock

Behindlock, might get a bit of a surprise covering, but if it happens it won't be worth happening.

Sparkling, you need to sack you Mum!

TobyLerone Sun 10-Feb-13 22:58:42

Ours has stopped sad

sad Was so hoping for an unexpected day off....

It's a bit rubbish isn't it! I'm moving to Boston.

Ooh it's stopped. Yay!!

LostInWales Sun 10-Feb-13 23:19:46

Well in a shock turnout for west Wales it has poured all weekend. The roads are rivers, the ground is saturated and my dog is in a very bad mood wink. Fingers crossed for better weather as it's half term here and I have three insane boys to keep from killing each other!

mumat39 Sun 10-Feb-13 23:24:46

Just looked nervously out the window and there is some snow falling i think. I can't tell if there's also rain mixed with it.

OYBBK, hope ou get some overnight and manage to get a snow day tomorrow.

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot Sun 10-Feb-13 23:33:17

Oooh it would be lovely to wake up to everything covered in snow tomorrow smile Snow boots are by the door Just In Case!

just looked out of the window and we have a decent covering here in se london. Nice suprise! Hoping school will be shut smile

We have a good covering here snd still falling. My school currently open though envy

NuzzleMyScratch Mon 11-Feb-13 06:47:42

About 3cms here north london/Herts border. Very wet snow though, and it's still snowing lightly.

TobyLerone Mon 11-Feb-13 06:52:07

A couple of cms here in the middle of Kent. Not enough for a snow day sad

It stopped as I was going to bed and doesn't look like it's snowed any more. Can't tell if it's still snowing.

A covering of snow here in North Suffolk. Its been the same most mornings then it is melted away by lunchtime.

Nothing. sad

Just enough to cover the grass here (Warks) but not enough for a snow day. sad

PeppermintCreams Mon 11-Feb-13 07:10:39

A good covering in SE London. Not enough for a snow day. sad

Snowing here again now!!

EndoplasmicReticulum Mon 11-Feb-13 07:11:59

Not exactly "Snowmaggedon" as predicted in some of the papers again.

A light dusting. Not sure how icy it will be, will find out in a minute.

GloriaSnow Mon 11-Feb-13 07:12:12

It's been snowing since 6.45pm last night, I think it's been snowing all night and it's still snowing now. And what have we got for all that effort? About 1cm! It's our 1/2 term this week so was hoping to do a bit of sledging with DDs but there's not enough for the smallest garden gnome to go sledging in, let alone us!

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 07:21:43

Snow looks much the same as it did last night, so don't think we had any more. Lowest temp. in the night was 0, now +1. My snow boots are covered in mud as only have the one pair for all winter weather.

reastie Mon 11-Feb-13 07:29:09

A couple of cms here in West Kent and still lightly snowing

Nothing here yet, but I'm expecting some in about an hour or two. Not much, but the air temp has dropped to 0.5c, so it might stick around for a bit.

TobyLerone Mon 11-Feb-13 07:40:17

Is there more coming today?

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 07:41:01

S Herts
Newspaper just been delivered in a car, and there was no loud crunching noise like last time - so not frozen wet snow. Little dog been 22 hours in doors and has 'held on', bless her.

Pahh not one bleedin' flake sad

Quick update for east anglia/cambridge for tge next week?

Im spending the week there....supposedly...

Hulababy Mon 11-Feb-13 07:46:32

PeneloPeePitstop Mon 11-Feb-13 07:46:41

Erm... It's snowing...

Are those general updates....or east anglia updates?

PeppermintCreams Mon 11-Feb-13 07:50:17

It's snowing heavily again in SE London, and settling too, which will make the school run interesting!

Hope it sticks around long enough for sledging after school.

schilke Mon 11-Feb-13 07:50:20

A very wet snow covering here in mid surrey. Snowing pathetically at the moment.

PeneloPeePitstop Mon 11-Feb-13 07:51:34

West Sussex here

PestoFrostissimos Mon 11-Feb-13 07:58:45

Just started snowing heavily here, up on the Downs just outside Brighton. I thought we'd escaped it this time!

MooseyMoo Mon 11-Feb-13 08:03:18

About 3cm in W Oxon. Sleet at the moment. DH got train to London today and he said snow was slushy rather than frozen (at 6am) on our drive

Whojamaflip Mon 11-Feb-13 08:05:16

oxon/glos border here with about 2 in of snow and its still coming down shock

don't mind too much as its half term but just put paid to our plans for today sad

OYBBK is there much more heading our way?

GloriaSnow Mon 11-Feb-13 08:07:10

Metoffice website seem to have decided that we're going to have light snow here (Leicester) 'til midday now, whereas it was forecast to be just dull and cloudy before. I think they're making it up as they go along!

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 08:19:34

Oh no, started snowing again - tiny flakes and some bigger ones. Falling vertically so no wind. <smile>

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 08:25:02

Now getting heavier and slanting from the north - poor little dog, no long walk again. Just a quick dash onto river bank at back of my garden and back in.

Hardly anything here smileI want spring to come now!

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 09:01:22

Just been out in the snow and is very wet snow as weather is too mild. If snow flakes had been bigger, little dog would have soon been a snowdog. But she loved it - not so me, as curved bridge over my pond was slippery and I lost my balance < thank goodness it has banister rails>.
She 's now looking out the window and then at me with an expression of " That was a short walk, where's my long one?" Perhaps at 3pm today.

It doesn't even look like it rained overnight here - everything is dry. I've just been on the school run and it's bitter cold.

mumat39 Mon 11-Feb-13 09:40:37

Woke up to a few flakes of snow falling this morning but that turned to sleet and it's now raining AGAIN!

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 11:11:21

mumat39 Mon 11-Feb-13 12:03:14

We have piddly nothingy stuff falling. Keep willing it to turn to big fat fluffy flakes but no such luck. Boo!

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 12:28:39

That's not fair I want your weather. After all the south east is supposed to be the sunniest and driest and Wales the wettest < sulky face>. We may have 8 degrees by end of week < sour face, I want it now>

now stopped, and getting quite bright. I expect it will soon be dried up.

BoiledEggandToastSoldiers Mon 11-Feb-13 12:37:39

Nothing here in Dorset yet? Any predicted??

boiledegg - nope! in fact just the odd snow showers now really through til Wednesday. Thats going to be another tricky day to forecast!

Just had a blizzard in Southampton, I've never seen flakes so big. All gone now and turned to rain though.

boiledegg, can I just put a caveat on that! You may get some falling, but not enough I dont think to hang around at all.

BoiledEggandToastSoldiers Mon 11-Feb-13 13:50:08

Some little skinny flakes falling, sky looks very grey, and down to 2*C.

PestoFrostissimos Mon 11-Feb-13 13:53:16

It must have warmed up, it's stopped snowing and melted off now.

FurFoxAke Mon 11-Feb-13 14:28:24

Do you know if the snow from the US will come over to us? Should we be making Plans?

mummylin Mon 11-Feb-13 14:47:23

been snowing in Bournemouth didn't think it was forecast for here.settled
on the grass and trees but not on the paths as they were too wet.

Well its sort of half melted here n SE London. Think this is the wettest slushiest snow I have ever experienced! Not enough to have any fun in, thats for sure. Wonder if it will all freeze solid tonight, and we will wake to ice rink?

mumat39 Mon 11-Feb-13 16:16:50

According to the accuweather app on my phone, we're supposed to be +9 on Thursday. And 10 on Saturday.

I thought I'd read on another forum that Wednesday was looking interesting with more snow. I guess that's changed now. sad

mumat39 Mon 11-Feb-13 17:29:11

Oops. I posted this before I refreshed and saw the last couple of pages.

Tbh, the 'snow' this year has been such a let down. Even though I know the chances are slim for us in the London area, I still get my hopes up. I wonder when I'll finally accept that it just doesn't happen that often. hmm

digerd Mon 11-Feb-13 18:24:52

Little dog had her long walk - not as long as usual, though, as I'd had enough-, but the snow was horrible, but grateful it wasn't icy, just slushy. The dog walking tracks were very muddy and squelchy, and the damp cold air was bad for my chest. Little dog wasn't as excited as usual, so we went home early, as my boots were wet and my feet were cold. Had max of +2 on house wall sensor. +1 now with 88% humidity.
Supposed to get milder by end of the week to +8.

mummylin Mon 11-Feb-13 22:42:34

Our snow has all gone ,it only lasted for about an hour then all melted !!

PigletJohn Mon 11-Feb-13 23:39:07

More snow for many away from the south tomorrow. Perhaps even for Manchester. Another marginal situation though with perhaps rain before and rain after. met office warnings

More details this afternoon.

<out of breath> did someone say snow and Manchester in the same post? <gets out snow shovel in eager anticipation>

Snow? Manchester? <not holding breath>

I will wait and see!

Dry cold and grey here again today. Chilly!

MumVsKids Tue 12-Feb-13 20:53:02

Well I'm off to the annual Shrovetide football tomorrow in Ashbourne, north Derbyshire.

Wish me luck, the forecast looks interesting smile

Dry overnight but the sky looks snowy out there.

Sparklingbrook Wed 13-Feb-13 06:41:13

I think we are going to get some snow today right in time for the school run. sad

DH is having to take the train to work today - I'm actually a bit concerned that he may not get home for ages...

Sparklingbrook Wed 13-Feb-13 06:51:08

I hate this don't you manky? I will be wondering if the schools will shut early and if the coach gets through.

I usually love it Sparklingbrook, but I'm just a bit twitch about DH tonight.

I know you have logistical problems though if it snows - I'm local to everything here and the kids school is literally a 10 minute walk.

Sky is full of snow here, but not falling!

Sparklingbrook Wed 13-Feb-13 07:22:47

Well every weather forecast says different so I am a bit lost. confused Weather lady on the TV says yes. Web sites say no.

It's a very transitory affair today, best spots are going to be in the midlands, though later on I think it will turn to rain in the West Midlands. Looks likely to make its way deep into southern England for a bit, staying as rain in the sw and may well turn back to sleet before it reaches the SE late afternoon.

Snowing in Manchester!

Not here yet. <eager anticipation mode!>

Aw it's stopped - just a very light dusting, but it looks ready to start again!

I'm in work all day today, trapped in a class with 30 5 year olds - they are going to be hyper if it snows properly!

Started again heavier now

Proper snow, about a cm already still falling.

Sparklingbrook Wed 13-Feb-13 10:03:36

It's snowing. sad

GloriaSnow Wed 13-Feb-13 11:38:14

2 hours earlier than forecast and it's just started snowing here (Leicester.)

Sparkling ~ DDs are on 1/2 term hol atm but go to an out-of-catchment area school (so it's down to us to get them there and back), 6 miles away and I know when snow's forecast, I go through the 'will they/won't they open and how bad will the the roads be' and if snow's falling and the roads are getting bad, I have thoughts of 'should I go and pick them up early and will the school think I'm a wimp if I do'. I hate the uncertainty weekday snow brings.

mumat39 Wed 13-Feb-13 13:56:17

Ooooh. Lucky so and so's wink

Hope your OH's and Dc's get back home safely and that you're able to enjoy it later.

I'll be waiting with crossed fingers and toes and everything else that we get some down here in SW London too.

GloriaSnow Wed 13-Feb-13 14:56:57

Our snow tailed off and stopped but in the last hour, it's thrown it down and we've already got about a cm, with a good covering on the grass and cars. Temperature's really dropped as well ~ it was 1.7C at 11am and now it's -0.2C.
<blows a bit of snow towards mumat and hopes that Sparkling's son gets home OK>

Sparklingbrook Wed 13-Feb-13 15:00:48

Thanks Gloria. It has been snowing all day but not settled at all. I pick him up in an hour, It's still coming down heavily but I think I should be ok. smile

GloriaSnow Wed 13-Feb-13 15:33:24

Ah that's good news, Sparkling. Looks like it's the sort of snow that goes on for hours but the conditions aren't right for it to settle.

Sparklingbrook Wed 13-Feb-13 15:35:26

Yes, it has finally stopped and everywhere is just very wet. I think in my part of Worcestershire it's ok but further north there are a couple of school closures.

snowing good and proper. My very bad cat alerted me to it by suddenly sitting bolt upright on my lap. With so many flakes she has no idea which ones to watch and is trying to watch them all grin

PigletJohn Wed 13-Feb-13 15:45:03

south coast

just started fine snowfall, not settling.

We snow and now its all gone!

PigletJohn Wed 13-Feb-13 16:51:26

all gone here too

Snowing here but very finely. It is settling but can't see it lasting long.

fatsatsuma Wed 13-Feb-13 20:58:12

Um, kitten, are you around? Only I've just been idly glancing at the TWO forum (specifically the model output thread) and although most of it means zilch to me, even I can tell that they are getting rather excited about the potential for another really cold spell.

Admittedly (from what I can glean) it is still some way off and therefore quite unlikely - but I have to ask - what do you make of it?

<sits on edge of seat and tries not to look excited>

We had a brief flurry (north west Surrey) at around 5.30 - 6 pm ish. It settled on the trampoline and the pation benches but not on the ground. But it disappeared as soon as it arrived [disappointed]

Well the ECM is certainly going for cold a week on Friday and it does indeed look very wintery but its not really verifying in the GFS yet.

Certainly something to keep an eye on!

mumat39 Wed 13-Feb-13 22:21:17

Ooh. Thanks for the snow Gloria thanks

We had a bit of sleet and a few bit fat fluffy flakes, about 5 I think. I did get start to get excited but managed to stop myself getting carried away. It stopped soon after but just thought I'd let you know that what you sent, arrived and was gratefully received. smile

Hulababy Wed 13-Feb-13 22:21:38

Another day of snow in Sheffield today. Fell thick and fast from 10am and continued til evening.

Nightmare at school as have OFSTED in! Over excited children and icy playgrounds were not fun!

Then couldn't get my car off the hill it was parked on, along with several others. So dh had to collect me. Took us over 2 hours to get dd and then home - about 4 miles!

And now a pain tomorrow as need to be at work early due to said ofsted but no car! A colleague's dp is taking us but need to leave my house before 7:30 to get there now.

I hate snow!!! Can't wait til holiday on Saturday!

fatsatsuma Wed 13-Feb-13 22:25:38

Thanks kitten. The different model names (GFS, ECM etc) don't mean much to me, but the TWO guys seem to think that they are more in agreement than usual. They don't seem to rate GFS much at the moment either.

Anyway, it's fun to watch them getting hot and bothered about what the models might be showing grin and sometimes they end up getting it right. But you are always the voice of reason and sense smile

digerd Thu 14-Feb-13 07:26:30

What a surprise this morning. 7am and +7 outside and all snow gone from the grass as has rained in the night. Yesterday was very cold in the afternoon with the biting wind returning. Didn't want rain though, as the doggie walking areas were muddy enough yesterday.

Gfs has been rather crap recently!

GloriaSnow Thu 14-Feb-13 07:37:53

mumat ~ glad it arrived safely!
fatsatsuma ~ they're saying the same thing about the GFS model not being that great on met-monkey as well.

We had about 1.5cms of snow in the end and it stopped about 5.30pm. As expected, it's all gone now and we're up to 5.6C ~ 'tis almost a heatwave after the last few weeks!

digerd Thu 14-Feb-13 07:57:36

Yesterday it was sunny until lunch-time then hazed over - no snow

Had a couple of cm in the end last night, but mostly gone by this morning, I'm assuming it's because of the rain.

mumat39 Thu 14-Feb-13 09:56:18

I've sort of been keeping an eye on snow watch to try and learn about the models. They say that the GFS is biased towards the mild Atlantic so often shows it winning the battle whereas some of the others, ECM I think is better at handling cold fronts. That is a good forum as there seems to be alt of respect between the posters and they don't get into bun fights.

I still haven't got a clue what the models mean. All I've gleaned so far is that high pressure causes the isobars/wind around it to move in a clockwise direction and that with lows the isobars/winds move in an anticlockwise direction.

So in about 2 months of following that I feel like I must be a bit dim grin as I haven't learnt that much.

Kitten, there was a lot of talk of the sudden stratospheric warming even on the bbc, but did we ever see the effect of that down here, as opposed to up there in the stratosphere? There was a lot of talk on there that we would feel the effects of it, so wondering what that might be and whether it's been and gone. confused

digerd Thu 14-Feb-13 10:55:30

10 degrees now and no cold wind. Sun came out for a couple of minutes but then disappeared again. Camelias tend to start blooming at 10+ especially Feb/March.

Sparklingbrook Thu 14-Feb-13 13:41:16

OMG. The heating is off, the windows are open, there is washing on the line and it is sunny. shock What a difference 24 hours makes. grin

Complaint-the sun was so low in the sky and bright this morning it made driving a bit difficult. sad

PigletJohn Thu 14-Feb-13 15:56:45

Good thing too. Think of the heating bills.

South coast, bright sunshine now, patchy blue sky with fluffy clouds.

I wish I had put out my washing! But I have got some gardening done this afternoon, which is good for the soul!

mumat, we did see the results of the SSW, but they were a bit feeble, it was when we had a decent amount of snow on that Friday in Jan where it came down really quickly.

Well, gfs has it cool/cold next weekend but not drastically so. ECM has it right proper cold. <technical> (what model do they use?!) have got us down for virtually a whole weekend of snow on the weekend after the one coming confused

It's changed it's mind now just to prove me wrong grin

mumat39 Thu 14-Feb-13 22:42:41

Oh. Thanks kitten. That must have been when we had loads of dandruff falling. How disappointing. I was convinced we were in for some big snow after watching the bbc report on it online.

Ho hum. I'll look forward to the next 'right proper cold'. Another technical term I've learnt today. wink

digerd Fri 15-Feb-13 09:12:04

Had a few minutes down pour immediately after window cleaners had finished yesterday, and I was ready for little doggie walk < angry face>. Been sunny so far this morning, but for 2 hours will be in the dance hall, and probably cloudy/raining this afternoon for little dog's walkies

PigletJohn Fri 15-Feb-13 12:34:40

S coast

More blue sky and sunshine

I need a week of this as I have some outside painting to do. We haven't had a dry week since November.

LillethTheCat Fri 15-Feb-13 13:47:25

So is that it now <hopeful> Or is the winter set to return again at some point?

GloriaSnow Fri 15-Feb-13 14:44:39

Lilleth ~ I think it's due to get colder again with frosts at night over the weekend and into the beginning of next week. Beyond that, "snow flurries" were mentioned on our local East Midlands news (by the appropriately named weatherlady, Sara Blizzard grin), from the middle to end of next week.

digerd Fri 15-Feb-13 15:36:20

Almost clouded over now and looks like it might rain later. 10 degrees. Little dog had her walk in dry air, but still very muddy on the ground.

Sara Blizzard, brilliant grin

digerd Sat 16-Feb-13 07:43:29

S. Herts
+4 in the night, now 6, but grey skies atm. Think it's trying to break up - hope so.

digerd Sat 16-Feb-13 11:11:27

Been sunny for a while, no wind so very spring-like today. Must keep an eye on my Camelia for when and if the promised frost returns.

It's been a lovely spring day here today.

digerd Sun 17-Feb-13 08:20:24

Was +4 when I went to bed, but skies must have cleared in the night as went down to -2. Feels very cold out but sunny atm - nice and crisp fresh air.

It's cold, clear and crisp here this morning - I have one load of washing on the line and another ready to go out.

If the kids did not have loads of activities on today I would be all for a walk in Werneth Low park today, it's beautiful.

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot Sun 17-Feb-13 13:13:48

I just thought I'd better pop in and see if we had any chance of snow. It's a lovely day here, feeling almost spring like... but two neighbours (in different directions) have gritted their drives today... wondered if they knew something I didn't not too difficult!! or if they are just barking. As OYBBK hasn't declared snow is on it's way - I'll just assume they are barking grin. Right, out for coffee in the sun.

Don't worry, no signs so snow. It looks pretty much like a dry week this week.

LillethTheCat Mon 18-Feb-13 09:19:47

So can we ignore the oversensationalizing news then about more snow coming?

Please say yes. I have places to go this week. I have a boy with a birthday who is looking forward to a couple of days out this week.

Pretty much lileth, maybe the odd snow shower in the east towards the end of the week but with high pressure in charge it looks to be pretty much cold but dry (and gorgeous sun here for a couple of days)

digerd Mon 18-Feb-13 10:07:27

It was alovely all day yesterday.
last night +1 and clear sky, but already hazing over. It was predicted that it would be cold and dry this week - hope it stays as wet and cold is horrible. And the doggie treks were not so bad yesterday. Not that little dog minds the mud as much as I do.

PigletJohn Mon 18-Feb-13 12:52:13

South coast, another bright sunny day, but a cool wind.

digerd Mon 18-Feb-13 13:13:51

The skies cleared again to give sunshine, but has felt cold - not much wind but the air is cold. Just want it to stay DRY for a while.

digerd Mon 18-Feb-13 13:14:24

LillethTheCat Mon 18-Feb-13 13:42:54

Thanks Kitten. Just the answer I wanted grin

Keeping a little bit of an eye out on the weekend now, whilst I think there could be snow flurries in the east and SE, it is just possible there might be something more than that. Will update.

Shinyshoes1 Mon 18-Feb-13 21:04:02

Oooh appreciated OYBBK I love the snow !!

A beautiful sunny day today, but bitter cold.
