For when this one gets full up smile

hopenglory Fri 18-Jan-13 18:14:53

It never got started down here grin

Yay. marking place OYBBK. Mainly as we had LOADS of snow but didn't close my school, so interested to get weekend news for Monday -deluded- ! grin

I know hopenglory, I do feel for you!

ShipwreckedAndComatose Fri 18-Jan-13 18:27:28

marking my place too grin

PestoFrostissimos Fri 18-Jan-13 18:28:41

Well it's still blizzarding here, but we don't mind as dd1 got in to school & did her exam and then they got sent home at 10.30am as the school closed. We've had a fab Snow Day with both dds managing to go sledging and we've checked the ponies and given them extra big feeds to cheer them up smile

I'm going to read this thread and sulk! envy

MirandaWest Fri 18-Jan-13 18:32:06

There's a whole cm in York <proud> smile

redwellybluewelly Fri 18-Jan-13 18:34:07

I'm checking in with Norfolk people who are wondering what more we have being sent our way.

x-posted with kitten before I think but BBC weather has it all wrong - has forecast heavy snow for the last 3 hours but we've actually had less than all day

LillethTheCat Fri 18-Jan-13 18:38:01

Just marking place.

Not had much snow at all. There was a tiny flurry about 4 and that's been it so far. Am hoping it wont get any worse until tomorrow lunch.

We've not had any here, so any snow would be appreciated please! smile

SW London had quite a lot of snow today and it's still falling steadily. If it does this throughout the night, I think we'll have a very clean & pretty world to wake up to tomorrow

CuthbertDibble Fri 18-Jan-13 18:51:27

Herts/Beds border, approx 3-4cm at present, very light snow still falling.

Gritter has just driven past... but wasn't doing any gritting, maybe it had run out? confused

MegGriffin Fri 18-Jan-13 18:52:03

A good amount in west sussex but i'm greedy and want MORE!

pepperrabbit Fri 18-Jan-13 18:53:12

Seems to be getting colder here, was definitely beginning to freeze when we just went out to get the kids. I think the roads will be treacherous tomorrow sad
Garden looks pretty though! grin

marking place but giving up on snow!

ShipwreckedAndComatose Fri 18-Jan-13 18:57:08

ditto here meggriffin!

chartreuse Fri 18-Jan-13 18:57:23

No snow in Dublin, although I did see a car with snow on the roof coming from the mountains. It has been bucketing rain for the last 24hrs. I am still hopeful for Sunday though, I would love a bit of snow smile

Still waiting. Keep checking on the radar and it seems to be heading my way.

Hi OYBBK I am a long time lurker on your weather threads and just love them!

Do you mind a question from DD1? It's her best friend's 9th birthday party tomorrow and it involves driving from NW London (Swiss Cottage) to Hemel Hempstead around 9am, returning around 1pm. So of course here is the question: is it going to be cancelled because of snow??!

thekidsrule Fri 18-Jan-13 19:13:25

lots here today and the last decent amount here was 20+yrs ago shock

wasnt suppose to get anymore but its snowing again now

Dorset and very near the sea

spent a great day with the kids, bought back many happy memorys of my snowy childhood

this is a real treat for us down south

TeWiSavesTheDay Fri 18-Jan-13 19:15:10

Checking in again

Still trying here, tiny flakes but not coming to much.

musicposy Fri 18-Jan-13 19:20:15

Marking place <waves to those many people in West Sussex>

Pigleychic thanks for the Gatwick info. Hope both our DHs get home safe.

Have had a lovely day, though, Two fabulous walks with the dogs. Young dog in particular is crazy with it all, rushing around, madly excited, but keeps sinking into the snow.

DDs have built a snowman in the garden - it's got to be 6 foot high! Three huge sections and a tangerine nose just like in the snowman. It's too dark now to photograph it with my rubbish iphone but will try tomorrow. Can't see it melting any time soon!

Snow has stopped here now, though, and down the lane it was quite thin on the paths. We're meant to have loads of friends round tomorrow but I don;t know if they'll make it - and I have nothing to feed them!

Hearts, I'm afraid I don't know if it will be cancelled. It's looking like snow showers in that area tomorrow. Some of them may be heavy.

MaureenMLove Fri 18-Jan-13 19:37:54

We'll be at least on thread no. 6, before I can join in. sad

nellyjelly Fri 18-Jan-13 19:38:01

Rubbish in West Manchester. Hardly any snow.

DS1 has even been able to get to a cricket match in Ashton Under Lyne tonight - normally they get snow really badly, but although they have a little more snow than us, it's still not bad.

bureni Fri 18-Jan-13 19:40:33

a few flakes here (north down) more wind and rain than snow.

blackeyedsusan Fri 18-Jan-13 19:48:15

w mids: we had 4-6 inches of snow. the needle sort that does not stick together, mainly, with the odd clump or two.

blackeyedsusan Fri 18-Jan-13 19:49:56

oh and what is the thing that is brewing on sunday night.

Dawndonna Fri 18-Jan-13 19:57:13

Marking place.

Redwelly According to news, loads more on Sunday!

StillSlightlyCrumpled Fri 18-Jan-13 19:57:29

OYBBK The BBC has said tonight that it will snow well into the week after next. Noooooo!!!
Is it going to be bad next weekend in the midlands & Cambridge areas? Also have family from Somerset & Kent coming. Is this all going to go wrong?

Thankyou in advance. smile

Erebus Fri 18-Jan-13 20:05:53

5'' in southern Hants. Lovely if you don't have to go out in it!

Doinmummy Fri 18-Jan-13 20:10:14

Anyone live in the Ipswich area, did you have snow this morning?

Just started !

<snoopy happy dance> grin

TobyLerone Fri 18-Jan-13 20:26:51

Made it to MILs and back. It was weird -- there was like a mile where there was an inch of snow, then another couple of miles with no snow at all, and so on.

It's still snowing a bit here, but still very light. We've got about 1cm, if that.

thekidsrule Fri 18-Jan-13 20:43:35

stopped now dorset

3 kids, ive never had so much wet clothes, socks, gloves etc scattered everywhere

as soon as one comes in the others go out

at one point today i had 10 teenage lads in and out my house, and half the countys snow on them, lol

fun though

Marking place smile

It is snowing very lightly here, it is only settling because of the snow we already had.

schilke Fri 18-Jan-13 21:16:28

Marking place.

10cm snow here in mole valley, surrey. I'm greedy too as I want more! Dog loves it - spins excitedly- chickens not so keen!

still snowing here, tiny little particles like dust, lying but because its so fine we don't even have 1cm!

MoreFrontThanBrighton Fri 18-Jan-13 21:20:16

OYBBK -what is going on over the weekend? I'm in Kent. BBC says it will snow all day on Sunday. Weather pro app says a little whiff of it around 9am. confused

Is this true about snowing into next weekend <wibble>?

MiconiumHappens Fri 18-Jan-13 21:21:05

Wiltshire here - we have loads smile been sledging and attempted a snow man, not sticky snow though, more the lovely fluffy variety.

leesmum Fri 18-Jan-13 21:28:49

Manky same here, just a light dusting but icy winds, its Ds2 5th birthday tomorrow and he is desperate to build a snowman sad

PeneloPeePitstop Fri 18-Jan-13 21:33:29

Being a pig... Want more!
One of the West Sussex crew too...

wibblyjelly Fri 18-Jan-13 21:34:54

Just started snowing again in East London. I hope when I check tomorrow that its snowed all night, and we get to play in it all day!

travellingwilbury Fri 18-Jan-13 21:39:01

Marking place ready for tomorrow grin

oybbk, what is your forecast for Woking / Surrey for the next few days? BBC not all that convinced we will get more snow (or at least not any worth getting excited about). What other forecasts can I look at to see if BBC are likely to be right?

youarewinning Fri 18-Jan-13 21:44:18

Im south Hampshire and we had about 5 inches. Hard to tell though as kids threw it at each other quicker than it could land! Fresh snow in garden after lunch seemed about that deep.

Roads a bloody nightmare though as it rained after gritting and up until it snowed - me and about 50 others watched a dustbin lorry skid and go backwards this morning. It's quite a noise 50 people exhaling in relief in unison grin

ArkadyRose Fri 18-Jan-13 22:17:54

wibbley It never really entirely stopped in east London - merely varied in amount. It was very fine & powdery earlier, but we've got larger flakes floating steadily down here in Walthamstow.

<waves at fellow West Sussexers>

We ended up with about 4 inches of fine, powdery snow! I wasn't expecting so much as we're less than a mile inland.

Mirage Fri 18-Jan-13 22:24:59

It is still snowing in Leicestershire. It hasn't stopped all day.

pinklady1107 Fri 18-Jan-13 22:25:55

It's stopped in north Kent grin

All forecasts are so confusing and report different things then you look on tv and its really snowing in London, I just want it to stop hmm

snowflakehellokitty Fri 18-Jan-13 22:29:21

5,inches on ground here in salsbury looks like next snow on sun
Dd2 is 4 tomorrow

OYBBK thank you. At least the snow will be some consolation for her if the party is cancelled smile

The best part about the snow for me is how excited the kids get. So sweet.

TobyLerone Fri 18-Jan-13 22:31:39

I am so bloody glad I wasn't getting married this weekend!

kaumana Fri 18-Jan-13 22:33:21

Edinburgh here- a few dustings this afternoon but it really started at about 8 and it's still going.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Fri 18-Jan-13 22:37:03

People keep driving on it and walking on it and spoiling it hmm

Still snowing...<presses nose against window>

I hope oybbk is curled up with some elusive crumpets.

Serious snow in Chichester. Maybe 5-6 inches?
Thankfully nursery did the playing in the snow for hours thing, so I just helped DS with a cursory snowman, had a brief snowball fight and then coaxed him in with the promise of playing with trains together.

LemonMousse Fri 18-Jan-13 22:52:19

Coming down nicely now in Co. Durham. smile

Travel we have light drizzle in Rustington now. sad

PeneloPeePitstop Fri 18-Jan-13 22:56:00

Rain?

Noooooo

Noooo, it has to stay because it makes my tip of a garden look OK!

Fraid that's the rain I mentioned as a possibility for the south coast sad

Ddd, more like a glass or two of wine along with Rosemary's Baby.

Will have to tackle questions tomorrow smile

TwllBach Fri 18-Jan-13 23:01:00

North Wales here - it started snowing at 11.45 and hasn stopped since. I've just let my collie out and it's up to her armpits!

harbingerofdoom Fri 18-Jan-13 23:06:55

Joyful just dashed outside. Something was coming down and then stopped very suddenly.
There seems to have been some melting....or wind

Crumbs Tywll. Poor dog!

Helenagrace Fri 18-Jan-13 23:11:56

Raining here now.hmm

musicposy Fri 18-Jan-13 23:15:56

TravelinColour waves from Chichester smile
We're just a bit further north. DH just got the coach back from Gatwick and had to walk home from Chi, took about an hour in the snow. No way I could get the car up the hill to the main road. At least he isn't working tomorrow. But I'm wondering if it will thaw a bit. DD1 had to go out and rescue the (admittedly massive) snowman as he was leaning over wildly. Am taking this as thaw sign!

harbinger are you in Rusty too then?

awaywego1 Fri 18-Jan-13 23:19:00

Stopped snowing in sheffield now sad hope there's more tommorow grin

PeneloPeePitstop Fri 18-Jan-13 23:19:05

Hoping it's confined to coasts, still snowing here... Very lightly.

Just checked the BBC forecast and I don't mind so much now - apparently we're going to get about 12 hours of snow on Sunday!

bureni Fri 18-Jan-13 23:37:09

I have given up on both the MET and BBC forecasts, still waiting for this snow after 24 hours, wonder where it is really?

MamaMimi Sat 19-Jan-13 01:13:44

We've had a few flakes (literally) here in south cumbria and that's it.

Still a tiny bit left over from it laying on Sunday but nothing else since and I don't think we are going to get any more now. sad

From the forecast on Wednesday we were looking forward to 10-15cm from Friday and over the weekend but none of it has materialised.

digerd Sat 19-Jan-13 06:38:32

South Herts.
Snow got going properly early afternoon. Up early as dancing was cut to 1 hour instead of 2 yesterday morning, and little dog didn't want to go out in snow, so sat around on MN.
Minimum temp. outside was only 0 last night, can't see yet if there was any more snow in the night as still dark.
Hoping/waiting to get my newspaper delivered and my home shopping groceries from 12-1. But narrow cul-de-sac road not cleared of snow nor my driveway, as can't do it myself < too old and frail>

Not much overnight here despite Met Office saying heavy snow for a large portion of the nighthmm

Muffinpig Sat 19-Jan-13 07:23:41

Can anyone tell me if north essex / south suffolk has had much snow overnight?

GloriaSnow Sat 19-Jan-13 07:23:50

Can't believe it, it's actually stopped snowing here! (Leicester)
Erm, looks 'interesting' for tomorrow (snow forecast, coming from over France way, pushing into the SE and then up towards us in the Midlands.)

We had about an inch so I am happy.

I slept the other way round with the curtains open so I could see the snow falling. [sad emoticon]

Interesting weather tomorrow, trying not to get too excited.

Did you enjoy Rosemarys baby OYBBK? Scary film. I watched The Others. I love watching spooky stuff this time of year. DH has just ordered all the old BBC ghost stories and we are working our way through them.

fluffacloud Sat 19-Jan-13 07:43:10

Muffinpig we've had between 1-2cm here but DP has said that Colchester Town has had less.

HTH grin

Problem with thwo threads is that I dont know which to post my update on!

Today it looks like like mainly light snow showers for those in central england. In eastern England these may pep up for a time. Not much really in the west.
Similar on Sunday but eastern counties may end up with a decent addition to their snow.

some scattered sleet or snow showers for Monday.

Better update later - off out in a moment.

Muffinpig Sat 19-Jan-13 07:57:07

Thanks. Completely in two minds whether to make a trip over there with two young DCs. Problem is that it might not be too bad right now but worried about coming back on Sunday.

Well we made it to MIL's. M3 and M25 absolutely fine last night except for one small bit of the M3 they were in he process of gritting. I've never seen the M25 so clear!

Only about an inch and a bit of snow here in Bromley though as opposed to about 2.5 inches when we left Southampton, but snow is snow and we packed the sledge and my 2 year olds skis, so that's today's activities sorted out.

Hoping for a bit more snow to be honest but we're meant to be driving back tomorrow evening, so a bit conflicted in what I'm hoping for.

Have a good snow day all those that have it.

digerd Sat 19-Jan-13 08:16:37

Well, newspaper still not delivered and is over an hour late. They deliver from just round the corner and across the main road? Bet they are not delivering and I'll have to get dressed in boots, hat and coat, and trudge my way over there and back and hope I don't slip and fall. Better phone first, just incase.<grumpy face>

digerd Sat 19-Jan-13 08:52:21

O goodie, my newspaper just been delivered on foot by corner shop and he brought me some milk too. He remarked how beautiful my snow /garden looked . Feels milder today, but snow rather wet so staying in as worried about me slipping and falling.
So ready to do my 2 crosswords now - not snowing atm.

Woke to the same light dusting as we had last night. It's snowing again this morning, still tiny dusty flakes of it.

reastie Sat 19-Jan-13 08:54:41

marking place thanks OYBK

41notTrendy Sat 19-Jan-13 09:00:53

Marking place too!
Got a lot here (Nottm) yesterday. Not sure what to expect today and tomorrow?
I do know our lovely sledging friendly road has been gritted angry

Follyfoot Sat 19-Jan-13 09:06:03

Been out with the tape measure grin and we've got almost 6 inches of snow. Still snowing now but its quite strange stuff - its a bit like that rain which doesnt look much but makes you really wet, so very fine flakes but loads of them. Watch out if you are coming to the Derbyshire Dales.

Oh and please dont forget to feed the birds sad

TobyLerone Sat 19-Jan-13 09:08:48

Woke up to about 1cm here! Big wow. It was snowing so promisingly when I went to bed.

Manchester, oddly, is having an invisible snow shower! The snowflakes are so small I can barely perceive them as they fall, but the ground is getting whiter by the minute. OYBBK, how can this be, when larger flakes took hours and hours to affect the whiteness of the ground before?

TobyLerone Sat 19-Jan-13 09:14:31

Maybe they're colder and harder? Big flakes often melt when they hit the ground.

I could be talking out of my bum... grin

Birds fed here Follyfoot. They stand outside waving there union cards till the feeder is full. grin

BlackAffronted Sat 19-Jan-13 09:25:48

We have had quite a bit of snow, but none of it is lying! It melts after an hour or so. Not fair!

ajandjjmum Sat 19-Jan-13 09:35:21

South Staffs - still getting small snow flurries that look like nothing, but amounted to about 6" by last night.

MirandaWest Sat 19-Jan-13 09:36:01

In York there is some amount of snow smile Had a walk last night about 11pm which was very good smile

Seems to be snowing a bit more now - quite light but seems to be still sticking.

digerd Sat 19-Jan-13 09:43:40

My male neighbour cleared a walkway in my long driveway just now, and I've put salt down - so things looking up. Definitely not so cold as it has been.
Sky looks ominous though. but not snowing atm. South Herts.

MirandaWest Sat 19-Jan-13 10:38:06

Think it might be raining a bit here sad

No idea what it's doing here! (Lincs)
DH has grand plans for later involving sledges and photos, I just want to stay in the warm after a week of battling to pre school and back!

duckyfuzz Sat 19-Jan-13 11:00:21

About 6" here in co Durham, accumulated over the past week, still snowing though!

There was hope of mancunian snow in the forecast I looked at this morning, looked again just now and it's all gone! Just cloud as far as the forecasters can seesad. Kitten, please say it'll snow here soon, and we're not on some snow-forsaken island here!

InMySpareTime it does feel like we have been abandoned by the snow fairy, doesn't it? grin

Maybe next year....

TeWiSavesTheDay Sat 19-Jan-13 11:16:26

Stupid question time: how do you check local travel advice? We're supposed to be driving into London today.

digerd Sat 19-Jan-13 11:17:51

South Herts
No more snow yet, but tesco delivery came and took little dog outside and she was fine except kept shivering. So went in < I'd had enough> and small snow clumps were everywhere from her paws/short legs indoors. Wonder if I need to buy her some tiny doggy snow boots to keep her paws warm? Never had that problem with any of my previous small dogs in minus 15 abroad.

fatsatsuma Sat 19-Jan-13 11:32:17

OYBBK can I ask you a question? What do you make of the likelihood of more snow in the SE tomorrow afternoon (Sunday)? Is it at all likely to extend as far west as N Oxon/Warwickshire? If so, I need to make some contingency plans....

Thanks as ever for being the voice that makes sense of all the other conflicting weather forecasts grin

magimedi88 Sat 19-Jan-13 11:37:21

Marking place as would also like to know about SE.

schilke Sat 19-Jan-13 11:38:03

We're mid surrey and I'm wondering the same as fatsatsuma?! The met office have heavy snow on kent border, but wondering if it will drift a bit....dc hoping it will! We have light snow forecast all day tomorrow.

pepperrabbit Sat 19-Jan-13 12:08:37

I have to post on this thread as the other one is crashing my laptop!
We've had a kind of not quite snow but really tiny balls of ice almost like mini hail? It looked like rain but was solid. Is that graupel??
Anyway cold here, zero apparently but felt like less.
Just cancelled a trip to North London tonight as really don't fancy an hours drive on icy roads sad my friend is v disappointed.
Supposed to snow lightly later on and the all day tomorrow hmm

Dawndonna Sat 19-Jan-13 12:46:30

light snow on and off on Norfolk/Suffolk borders.

MegGriffin Sat 19-Jan-13 13:03:38

Yellow warning for south east tomorrow! I hope we get lots.

Please can you reassure me that Monday will be dreadful between cambridge and birmingham and the trains will be disrupted grin I have a training course to go to in B'ham and really really really don't want to sad

Any chance of a forecast for North Lincolnshire over the next day or two? Met office is saying not much and yr.no is saying snow all afternoon tomorrow hmm

Polgara2 Sat 19-Jan-13 13:28:39

Cheshire. We had 3-4 inches yesterday, schools closed etc. Keeps trying to snow today but not very successfully thank goodness! Ice on top of the snow more a problem today. Dd2 informs me we will get more tomorrow but I feel this is wishful thinking of a monday off school grin

ArkadyRose Sat 19-Jan-13 13:28:55

Snow still lying from yesterday in E17; it carried on snowing overnight but right now it's very fine graupel; I can see from the radar that all the real action is up north over eastern Scotland, though there's some light precipitation going on between Liverpool & Sheffield from the looks of things, and a nice big splodge over the Yorkshire area. Down in the SE we're forecast to get some steady snow throughout Sunday, but I'm thinking it will be fairly light but stead - not quite what we had in places yesterday. It'll probably blanket the east from about 6am tomorrow onwards, though I think up towards the Midlands will see some action later in the morning. Monday is when we'll see much heavier widespread falls, though the SW will be somewhat left out at first until late Tuesday, early Wednesday maybe.

(sits back & waits for OYBBK's verdict) grin

pumpkinsweetieMasPudding Sat 19-Jan-13 13:32:10

I'm in kent, it's very cold, but all we have had is a thin layer overnightsad

Seems to be warming up a bit next week. East Kent has rain forecast for Tuesday and 3 degrees, practically balmy!

TeWiSavesTheDay Sat 19-Jan-13 13:54:00

Thank you Arklady!

We decided not to go away this weekend as I think we're set to get some of this eastern/midlands snow tomorrow.

It is actually snowing now very lightly.

CharlieSilver Sat 19-Jan-13 13:54:31

Still got half a foot here from yday but no more has fallen today - south east btw.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth Sat 19-Jan-13 13:57:33

I'm kent to and we had a very light dusting yesterday but that's it, I'm supposed to be babysitting tonight in Maidstone and would be handy to know if I should ask the parents to be back earlish if its going to snow as I need to get home the other side of medway and am already dreading driving home in the early hours of the morning

awaywego1 Sat 19-Jan-13 14:01:49

Annoyed with sheffield. Silly tiny snow..everywhere is just sludgy and horrible now-I want big snow grin

Still NO snow here in my bit of the SW. Nothing at all. Where has snow at the moment? I fear I may need to move home to see some snow grin

snowflakehellokitty Sat 19-Jan-13 14:10:24

No more snowfall here since yestetday we r due some tomorrow
Still lots of snow on hround
Girls hv been out this morning

JourneyThroughLife Sat 19-Jan-13 14:17:41

About 20cms down here (South), started to melt but not much...still enough to have great long icicles hanging down from buildings. Icy pavements, cars pretty buried, roads slippery. Getting colder, we've been promised more snow on Sunday...I love it...

envy

digerd Sat 19-Jan-13 15:39:52

Still only 0 degrees, and little dog has just been out and didn't want to come in. But I found the air quality really bad for my asthma, and huffed and puffed back home. Over cast cold damp weather is much worse than a dry crisp cold < with blue skies, smile>
Looking ominous for more snow.

Currently putting together the low down for the next few days smile

Hooray - OYBBK is back from her real life to update us.

Mrs A hunkers down to await update.

MaureenMLove Sat 19-Jan-13 15:54:52

I'm bored stoopid, so I'll look forward to the update. I got myself all ready for a 'snow in', where I didn't have to go out, other than to play in the snow and we haven't got nearly enough to play in!

I don't need to go anywhere either, because I planned the weekend around snow! grin

The most I've done today, is have a shower and put clean pjs on!

With eldest Mankies football match cancelled this morning, I have had my first leisurely Saturday in months - I've only just got dressed because we need to go out to family for tea. blush

No more snow, just the dusting we got yesterday. We have been robbed!

DH and DD just went out bird watching. Sat with mug of tea awaiting OYBBK update.

Tomorrow: Main risk is for Kent and East Anglia and continuing up the east coast as weather pushes up from France. Possibly some heavy snow arriving by morning in Kent and lunchtime or so in EA, Yorkshire by late evening. Also to confuse things there may be some heavy snow showers in the NE for a time during the day too.
Other eastern areas (perhaps as far west as Hampshire) will also be affected by this but to a lesser extent. Other areas, the possibility of some flurries.

Monday: The east coast will be most prone to snow showers but they could pop up in central England too. Perhaps some sleet or rain mixed in, particularly in the south.

Through the rest of the week a very similar picture. Perhaps the south may be a bit too warm for snow from Monday/Tuesday on. Keeping an eye on possibilities for Wednesday and Friday, but at the moment it is too uncertain to speculate. Impossible to say when the cold will leave us, at the moment it looks like hanging on in the north for this week at least.

tis a pain this real life lark isn't it wink going to be out all evening too.

pepper - it almost certainly was graupel. was it a bit like polystyrene? Could be ice pellets if its more solid than that.

TobyLerone Sat 19-Jan-13 16:10:50

Exciting news for us tomorrow, then!

Today it's been dandruffing all day, but no change in the look of outside. Tonight we're going to dinner at some friends' who live in the middle of nowhere, so I'm glad it's held off today.

Thank you OYBBK ! Just to be clear (because I'm a bit stupid!)...does this mean we're likely to get snow in Herts? And will North London get it or escape?

Thinking selfishly about Monday and work. Live in one and working in the other.

Cheers Kitten! Should be our turn now Toby.

TobyLerone Sat 19-Jan-13 16:15:07

grin

I did enjoy Rosemary's baby DDD - very weird in parts, but a good old fashioned tale.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth Sat 19-Jan-13 16:17:31

Thank you oybbk, really wishing I hadnt agreed to babysit now!

Heffalumpa Sat 19-Jan-13 16:17:48

Is MK at risk of this snow coming into E Anglia? Or are we too far West?

Is it the 1st time you have seen it? It is strange film, very spooky.

Try Angel Heart next, thats a corker.

Tomorrow afternoon both herts and north london should see some snow for a time, but I dont think it will add up to more than a few cm at most.

Milton Keynes should catch some light stuff tomorrow afternoon.

DDD it is the first time smile I recorded a few scary films over Christmas. Will watch out for Angel Heart, Thanks!

Any hope for me OYBBK?

EndoplasmicReticulum Sat 19-Jan-13 16:35:39

We have been sledging this morning. I am now happy. We didn't get any overnight despite forecasts seeming to suggest this, but had a fair covering yesterday evening. More sledging tomorrow I think. I like snow at the weekends because I don't have to worry about trying to get to work - my son pretended it was Tuesday this morning and school was shut (he is desperate for a snow day).

not very much at the moment Manky sad

There's a cm or so lying here in SE London, so by the look of it maybe a little bit more tomorrow, was hoping for huge snowdrifts!

Oh, well. At least its sledgeable, although not really enough to do snowman etc.

wibblyjelly Sat 19-Jan-13 16:52:41

Will East London get some more?

wibbly, yes you should tomorrow smile

wibblyjelly Sat 19-Jan-13 17:00:51

Yay, thanks Kitten!

<sobs>

schilke Sat 19-Jan-13 17:01:49

I'm mid surrey. Pretty much right on the border of the yellow snow warning on the met office site. What do you reckon? A bit more for us? Dc want a snow day on Monday. We had 10cm yesterday, but not enough to keep them off Monday!

Manky - we have snow forecast for later next week ( currently Tuesday but yesterday the Met Office was saying Monday and Wednesday - I wish they'd make up their mind!!)

OYBBK A graupel question!

This morning we had a brief flurry of snow. It was formed of what looked like tiny spheres. I've looked at Google images of graupel but what we had was much smaller - maybe only one or 2mm across. Is this still graupel or something else entirely?

TwllBach Sat 19-Jan-13 17:11:35

Do you think north Wales will get anymore? There's been a bit of a melting session onthe last few hours sad but y phone forecast says the temperature will be in the minus numbers for the next few days <hopeful>

pepperrabbit Sat 19-Jan-13 17:15:06

educatingarti - that's what we had this morning!

Mirage Sat 19-Jan-13 17:45:21

BBC2 now,prog about the winter of 1963.

Meglet Sat 19-Jan-13 18:37:25

I love the snow but the sub-zero temperatures are going to be the death of my boiler. Poor thing is on non-stop.

Dawndonna Sat 19-Jan-13 18:37:56

The winter of '63. I was five and I can remember Dad taking me to the frozen Thames. (We lived nearby).
<feels very old>

amistillsexy Sat 19-Jan-13 20:38:20

OYBBK, I've been sadly let down by 'could do better' and 'Must try harder' snow here in West Yorks (Halifax area).

Up Thread you said you thought we'd get some more snow in Yorkshire tomorrow evening.

Do you think it will be proper, heavy, deep and crisp and even stuff? And will we see big, fat flakes of the stuff here in Halifax?

I feel like a holiday grin

travellingwilbury Sat 19-Jan-13 20:53:21

nannynick Sat 19-Jan-13 22:43:44

BehindLockNumber9 - I expect we may get some snow tomorrow (Sunday) but I am not expecting there to be another 10cm. Time will tell though.

Thanks NannyNick, will keep everything crossed smile

Hope you had a lovely evening OYBBK. Sending snowy thoughts everyone's way smile

It's snowing. grin

GloriaSnow Sun 20-Jan-13 07:13:07

We're now under the yellow warning for snow ~ this hasn't surprised me judging by the forecast on News24 yesterday showing the snow heading for us here (Leicester.) So we're hoping for a covering which has pleased DD2 greatly as it's her birthday today and she wants to go sledging!

GloriaSnow Sun 20-Jan-13 07:13:39

Yeh, at least you got there.

PeppermintCreams Sun 20-Jan-13 07:46:29

No snow here in suburban SE London yet.

OH made it out of Heathrow for a stag do yesterday. Flight was only delayed by an hour.

The weather watchers on the netweather forum think it's on it's way soon. It's snowing in parts of Kent.

lubeybooby Sun 20-Jan-13 07:50:14

Oooh I do hope we get more! (Leicestershire)

Marking place!

MegGriffin Sun 20-Jan-13 08:02:32

Started snowing lightly in west sussex.

Should be with you by 10 Peppermint, if you look on the met radar you can see it approaching.

Scruffalo Sun 20-Jan-13 08:16:13

Light snow here on the East Sussex coast since about 7am. I've decided DC's swimming lesson is cancelled as I'm too much of a wimp to drive in the snow blush

LIZS Sun 20-Jan-13 08:17:01

It's just started very lightly here

PeppermintCreams Sun 20-Jan-13 08:17:40

It's snowing now in SE London. Very fine. Looks like rain until you see that it's settling on the footpaths.

Squeeee!!!

MegGriffin Sun 20-Jan-13 08:17:49

I don't blame you scruffalo. I.would hate to drive in the snow and ice.

Snow here in SW London / same as Friday started light but settling... Hurrah!

schilke Sun 20-Jan-13 08:34:30

pigleychez Sun 20-Jan-13 08:44:30

Ohhh snowing here now too. smile

not big flakes but a steady stream of light stuff. Settling on the ground now too.

In two minds as id love another dump of heavy stuff but DH starts his new job tomorrow so could do with it not being too bad so the trains are ok.

Snowing lightly and prettily here in Bromley. Snowman building later!

Yay. Light snow here now. Im selfishly hoping it keeps going as mine was the only school in its area not to close on Friday and I really really want a snow day smile blush

lubeybooby Sun 20-Jan-13 08:53:47

Snowing in Essex now and looks like enough to take the kids sledging in an hour or so if it continues. We have some great sloping cliffs at the top our road which turn into a ski resort when it snows! Much fun to be had!

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 09:34:51

Just started snowing - very fine flakes- and coming from the north this time. All week it has come from the SSW. Temp -1.
South Herts

thekingfisher Sun 20-Jan-13 09:35:10

am i terribly stupid to consider driving with dh and ds from near colchester into w.london for lunch at 12.30 and back again at about 4 are we likely to get stuck???????? going to do along a120 to stansted then m11 into london
whats the consensus??

So this weather front does seem to be behaving pretty much as expected so far with timings that I posted yesterday still seeming quite accurate. The question yesterday was how far west this front would affect and the answer looking at the radar seems to be right over to Wales!

West Country not really getting very much if anything out of this I think and Manchester seems to have its magic snow shield switched on (for a city that from memory always seemed rather wet I have no idea why it repels snow so much! I think it must be the way the Pennines curve round it, so the only weather it allows in is from the west)

schilke Sun 20-Jan-13 09:38:55

Morning kitten. I'm in mid surrey and areas that were snow free are now recovered. It is very light though. Is it going to get heavier? Possibly enough for a snow day tomorrow? We had 10cm on Friday, but roads now clear.

Snowing lightly but steadily in Surrey, fingers crossed it keeps going all day smile

thekingfisher Sun 20-Jan-13 09:39:29

now just started snowing with us ( N of Colchester)

HeavenlyAmy Sun 20-Jan-13 09:40:31

snowing in east sussex, bit worried as dc in london and coming back by train at 5!

nannynick Sun 20-Jan-13 09:41:08

BehindLockNumber9 -been snowing here for about last hour.
Snowfall in West Surrey/East Berkshire border area seems light at the moment but I expect it to stick to untreated surfaces, especially the existing snow. -9 temp forecast tonight, so ice will be a problem tomorrow.

Are cold overnight temps expected in most areas?

Yes, I think that's it smile weather from the west creates orographic precipitation for Manchester as it is on the windward side of the Pennines for that scenario. Weather from the south east, north east or east means that places like Sheffield get the orographic precipitation and Manchester remains drier as its on the leeward side. Snow tends to come from easterly directions. Hence why Manchester is quite a wet city, but rarely gets proper snow.

Orographic precipitation is when air lifts and cools as it goes over hills/mountains. If the temperature lowers to dew point rain happens smile (broadly speaking)

NotAQueef Sun 20-Jan-13 09:43:34

Ooh thekingfisher that gives me hope
I am in Colchester excitedly awaiting the snow. We only got around an inch on Friday night.

TeWiSavesTheDay Sun 20-Jan-13 09:44:24

Snooooow!

(again) in south northants. A little earlier than expected but entirely lovely.

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 09:44:38

I don't do Walkies while snowing - don't think little dog wants to either- so have to wait until it has stopped. Strange that the flakes are so tiny when the temp is only -1.?
In Germany where we had - 15-18, I noticed the flakes were small and dry, not like our usual enormous ones. But not as tiny as these.

TwllBach Sun 20-Jan-13 09:47:47

Did you say over Wales OYBBK? Could I possibly have a snow say in Monday do you think?

As soon as I got home on Friday I got hit with a nasty cold/stomach bug and I really am not up to all the work I have to do today in preparation for tomorrow <whimpers pathetically>

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 09:48:24

OYBBK BBC are saying 'light snow' for us from 11am this morning to 9pm tonight. sad We are Worcestershire would you agree with that? I am starting to stress about DS1 and school tomorrow again. sad

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 09:48:43

Super! Snow! Shame I've got visitors today. Means ill have to get dressed. Didn't bother yesterday!smile

Snowing on the south coast again

At this rate I won't get DP back from Scotland sad

Dd not seen daddy for 3 weeks, AND I NEED A BREAK!!!!!!

Schilke I'm not quite sure how much you will get out of this, there's quite a lot on the radar coming your way and it seems to be beefing up. I'm quite surprised the met office aren't expanding their warnings westwardly.

SilverAndSparklyKat Sun 20-Jan-13 09:51:40

Snowing again in South Birmingham. The chickens have retreated back into the coop.

CarrieDon Sun 20-Jan-13 09:51:56

Morning OYBBK

Thank you for all the info and updates. I love these weather threads!

We had a wonderful snow day on Friday and although there has been a bit of a thaw, we still have a couple of inches left and it's started to snow again albeit lightly.Hoping for a proper covering so the school doesn't expect us to brave the ice and fog tomorrow.

In your opinion what are the best websites for us lay people to look at for an accurate forecast? Who do you rate?

schilke Sun 20-Jan-13 09:53:26

Thank you kitten. We were right on the border of the met office warning yesterday. Must stop hovering on this thread and looking out the window.....got dd1's party to get ready for this afternoon!

wildirishrose Sun 20-Jan-13 09:56:06

Yuck, snowing again and its freezing cold.

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 09:57:47

If South Birmingham have snow it's heading this way then. sad

Sparkling I think it may go on for longer than that this evening for you.

Twl, it may not make it to the coast (north and west) but if you are more central then you may at least see some. But perhaps you ought to stay at home tomorrow anyway to recover from your bug? I hope you feel better soon.

abbierhodes Sun 20-Jan-13 09:58:27

OYBBK- I'm in Birmingham! Met office are predicting light snow today, day and night, but they said that Friday and then all hell broke loose! What d'you reckon to our chances of another day off school?? grin
We got half a day Friday which was better than nothing!

CarrieDon, I'd always go for the met office over any other site.

TobyLerone Sun 20-Jan-13 10:00:25

How long might it last in Kent?

duckyfuzz Sun 20-Jan-13 10:01:16

Snowing again in co Durham, earlier than expected. It's snowed every day for the last week now!

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 10:03:28

Thanks OYBBK. Hopefully it will be enough to make me sure the journey isn't worth it/stop the bus running. <considers home schooling until May>

wibblyjelly Sun 20-Jan-13 10:04:52

Snowing in East London!

Abbier, there is a reasonable chance I think of enough to produce some accumulation, so it depends on how good the council is at sorting it out grin

Toby, I think late afternoon, early evening.

SchmancyPants Sun 20-Jan-13 10:09:17

OYBBK, what do you think are the chances for a snow day off school tomorrow in Chislehurst, Kent? I'd like to know whether to plan my lessons or not!

TobyLerone Sun 20-Jan-13 10:12:05

Woohoo! OYBBK, you are the best!

Schmancy, I guess it depends on how quickly your council can get the roads clear over night. Once it stops snowing I'm afraid they will have plenty of chance to get their act together!

SchmancyPants Sun 20-Jan-13 10:14:15

Thanks smile I guess I will start planning then!

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 10:17:37

It's snowing. <sigh>

freezing fog could be a real issue tomorrow morning in the south.

CarrieDon Sun 20-Jan-13 10:21:40

Okay, Met Office it is. I do find the chat on here very interesting for interpreting how the weather conditions will actually impact what we can do. Well done Kitten.

So another duvet day, perhaps two...bliss.

Snowing quite hard in Maidstone, Kent - toby I am with you...do I plan my lessons or not!

I have to try to get the car out to go and get my DD from her grans, we had a night out...but the car is tightly parked and they haven't gritted out road..eeek!

I really hope it stays, hate the thought of the drive to work in this and the kids being all over excited all day.

Helenagrace Sun 20-Jan-13 10:46:44

Did anyone else see the 1963 documentary they showed on Winterwatch last night? It was about the "big freeze" of 1963.

The A39 in Devon was blocked by snow for 50 days, one village on Exmoor was only reached after 100 Royal Marines dug for two days, a train from Manchester to Brighton was snowbound for 48 hours and they had avalanches in the Lake District.

Kind of puts Snowmageddon into perspective...

Thats sounds more like an ice age!

Just sledged to the shop for essential supplies of wine and chocolate. grin

LIZS Sun 20-Jan-13 11:05:45

Had about another inch so far. Not seen any buses today.

magimedi88 Sun 20-Jan-13 11:09:08

Did anyone else see the 1963 documentary they showed on Winterwatch last night? It was about the "big freeze" of 1963.

Yes - and I remember 1963!

Did you see the credits at the end?

Designer: Ridley Scott !!!!!!!!!!

LillethTheCat Sun 20-Jan-13 11:32:41

Why do 3 different weather sites give me 3 different forecasts?

BBC says its going to snow pretty much from now until Wed
Netweather says a bit of snow tonight and then sleet tomorrow from early on
Met Check says snow tonight and tomorrow morning, then sleet tomorrow aft onwards.

Who do I go with? Im in North Yorkshire.

<Invites Manky for a snow dance>
I want snow! It's just not fair! That last batch of snow actually came from the west and still missed Manchester.
If it doesn't snow soon, and decently, I shall pout, and you don't want to see me poutconfused.

<links arms with InMySpareTime>

Snowing here at the moment, very fine light flakes, not expecting more than that. sad

awaywego1 Sun 20-Jan-13 11:35:33

<Joins with Manky and InMySpareTime> Except I have to go somewhere on Thursday so don't want bad snow then!!

Helenagrace Sun 20-Jan-13 11:42:36

I spotted that too Magimed!!

Incredible!

edam Sun 20-Jan-13 11:46:55

Been snowing all morning here on the Herts/Beds border. I'm hoping for snow bad enough to stop the trains tomorrow morning so I get a day off work! (I'd have to take holiday but even so...)

pumpkinsweetieMasPudding Sun 20-Jan-13 11:52:13

I' m in Kent and after waiting all week, we finally have snow and by gum is it heavy! It doesn't normally lay in my area

TwllBach Sun 20-Jan-13 11:52:42

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one putting off lesson planning grin

mumat39 Sun 20-Jan-13 11:53:28

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your DD Gloria! Hope you manage to get out sledging.

We have very fine, like icing sugar or dandruff, falling here. It's so fine it seems to be floating around a lot before remembering which way is down and falling. It is settling.

We have a mix of rain and snow forecast for Tuesday, but depending on where I look it seems to be different forecasts. Very confusing really. This is the best and most accurate place I think.

Kitten, there is talk of it warming up towards the end of this coming week? Do you think this will be the last of the snowy cold for us? Or will we be in the freezer for longer?

Can I ask about wellies? Both my dc had wellies on on Friday and we walked home from DD's school. But both their feet were frozen and since then they have both got runny noses and keep sneezing. hmm. So what do your dc wear on their feet to keep them warm?

Thanks in advance.

mumat39 Sun 20-Jan-13 11:56:51

Also, what do you all have by your front door to step onto when coming in from the snow or wet? We used to have a rug that DP walked fox poo onto and it won't clean off, so at the moment we have nothing. We have a laminate floor so I don't think water is good for it. Just wondering really. Thanks.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth Sun 20-Jan-13 12:00:39

Weve got a mat outside the back door to stand on whilst taking boots off and then an old towel next to it to put boots on

lilleth - none of them -you go with the met office.
Remember metcheck and netweather just use the GFS model. The Met office use a range of their models and also add in some human common sense into the mix.

mumat, it looks like it may warm up at the end of the week but its far from certain as to whether that is it for winter.

dd wears walking boots with waterproof trousers for this weather.

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 12:07:22

I think of netweather as The Sun of weather forecasting. grin I have signed up for their emails and they are very alarmist a lot of the time.

I am officially ditching BBC weather as of today.

awaywego1 I'm in Sheffield too and I think we are getting it this evening and overnight

Dawndonna Sun 20-Jan-13 12:08:41

Nothing on Norfolk/Suffolk borders yet, despite promises of constant snow from nine last night. Damn cold, white, high cloud, but that's it, so far.

pigleychez Sun 20-Jan-13 12:08:58

Mumat39-
We have a big coir doormat right by the door but In Wet/Snowy weather I put a big old towel down on the floor and we stand on that to remove boots etc. It then soaks up the melting snow from the boots. I have one at the back door too.
Not the most stylish but its only for a few days max.

re boots- I have previously bought DD's snow boots. The girls have outgrown theirs but couldnt find any in the right sizes in the shops. Was going to order some online but found these wellie liners instead.
http://www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/sp+polarfleece-wellie-liners-in-winter-hats-scarves-and-mittens+B8309

They are great. They keep the girls feet really warm and look great with their wellies. Makes more use of their wellies instead of another pair of boots that will only get worn a few times.

Megsdaughter Sun 20-Jan-13 12:09:35

We have a rubber bath mat as in one you put in the bath to stop slipping, it can then just be wiped off

pigleychez Sun 20-Jan-13 12:09:57
CarrieDon Sun 20-Jan-13 12:10:27

mumat39

How about wellies big enough for two pair of socks - one ordinary cotton layer, then thicker woollen/thermals socks on top. Also I have fleecy liners on the inside bottom that insulates from cold.

How about a large plastic tray or two three on the floor to place the melting wellies on? You can buy biggish ones at garden centres for plotting plants on.

mumat39 Sun 20-Jan-13 12:10:51

Thanks both.

Ok. Two problems solved. Thank you.

I don't know why, but it feels really really good not only to have snow but also to have some cold weather. It was so wet the last year that it's good to have a proper season, if that makes sense. DP asks whys think that and I haven't got a clue. confused

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 12:13:48

I was there in 1963 and remember it well, especially as we had the last pea souper fog in November 1962. I was fed up of wearing heavy pure wool coats, no light- weight padded jackets in those days. The snow melted during the day and turned to ice overnight then it snowed again. It carried on until April.
My neighbours in their 80s remember the 1947 winter < I'm too young, smile>

mumat39 My local Aldi have got both childrens snow boots and fleecy wellie liners in at the moment! Might be worth a look if you have one near you. I'm imagining they may sell out quite quickly in this weather though.

BanghamTheDirtyScone Sun 20-Jan-13 12:14:22

MooncupGoddess Sun 20-Jan-13 12:18:28

Still snowing lightly but persistently in central London. Rather lovely to see it falling through the church windows as we sang Epiphany music. Walking past St Paul's afterwards I was stopped by some excitable American tourists who wanted someone to take a photo of them in the snow by Temple Bar.

Still persistently snowing here in SW London - desperately don't want to lesson plan, but have an observation tomorrow so probably will have to!!!!

schilke Sun 20-Jan-13 12:45:32

Snow here in mid surrey is a bit pathetic. Very light, but been going since 8:30.

I usually find the met office and the bbc have the same forecast for me. They certainly do today - light snow until 9pm,

edam Sun 20-Jan-13 12:53:17

1963 was also the year of the worst sea flooding ever in the UK. Something like 300 people were killed and loads more made homeless. Floods stretched all the way from Lincolnshire down to Kent IIRC, and the fields were so badly affected not only were the crops ruined, nothing would grow the following year - too saline.

Jazzicatz Sun 20-Jan-13 12:58:52

Really heavy snow in Brighton, surprised as the weather report just said for light snow, but its been constant since about 9am

redwellybluewelly Sun 20-Jan-13 13:04:25

edam the floods you are speaking of were I think in 1953 not 1963. Wiki it

edam Sun 20-Jan-13 13:05:16

Oops, yes, it's the 60th anniversary coming up, not the 50th.

Skang Sun 20-Jan-13 13:06:51

It's been snowing hard and fast all day here in near Colchester, but it's really fine snow.

Why is it so fine??

Just built a huge snowman with DD and my dad. In for lunch then we are off out on the sledge again.

I am soooooooo happy. grin grin grin

Checking in to say that its bright and lovely although sun hidden, lots of snow on the ground. I think dd and I will brave work tomorrow as I've lost a week so far.

Still. Ours is meant to hit later this afternoon/evening I think

Ok, snowman has been built, snowballs have been thrown and general fun has been had!

Only problem with being 36 weeks pregnant is you get knackered quickly, so in now with a latte and the papers while DS sleeps.

Coming down quite heavily ow in Bromley, will be keeping an eye on the roads as we're meant to be travelling back to Southampton tonight. DH just went out for the papers and all main roads are clear so we may get there.

MumVsKids Sun 20-Jan-13 13:25:47

Nothing in derby sad

Gutted!

I'm not sure why it is so fine! Its a bit pointless really as its just not accumulating. It must be something to do with humidity/temperature ratios.

Its snowing nicely here in SE London. Has been falling all day. I estimate we have <squints> 3 inches settled. Sadly DS is not well, hoping we can get out tomorrow and do the igloo though!

lubeybooby Sun 20-Jan-13 13:32:53

It really is fine - we've had about 1.5cm since 9am, pathetic really.

Oh well at least it's been enough to make it all pretty again going over footprints etc.

cocolepew Sun 20-Jan-13 13:34:16

Two and a half cms outsude our house, DD measured it grin, we're in Co. Down.

Snowing steadily atm, earlier it was like little ice balls falling.

Sparklegeek Sun 20-Jan-13 13:38:08

Been snowing since 7-ish I think here on the Essex coast. I reckon we have about 7cm so the fine stuff is accumulating when there's enough of it! At long blimmin last.

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 13:40:11

Looking good for a white out tomorrow!

Thing is, school invested in a snow plough last year, so the premises will be safe and clear, but how many staff members will get in to make it safe to have kids there? I'll have to walk I expect and it'll be a hellava day for me. I'm the one who organises cover for absent teachers! I can think of at least a dozen teachers that will struggle to get in.

Ah well, what will be, will be. Until then, I sit and look at the loveliness of it all!

LillethTheCat Sun 20-Jan-13 13:45:31

lilleth - none of them -you go with the met office Thanks I will try to get used to the Met Office website. Id like it a bit more if I could zoom in on the weather warnings map or they had place names on there. I cant tell where I am properly.

TwllBach Sun 20-Jan-13 13:54:43

It's started snowing again
<settles deeper in to the sofa>

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 14:07:53

Still snowing powder, and still haven't been able to take little dog for a walk.
I shall attempt it at 3pm today, at least I intend to for little dog's sake. If she will go out in it.

Nothing here yet. DH is going to tempt fate soon by going to the supermarket 20 mins drive away grin

pepperrabbit Sun 20-Jan-13 14:13:32

We've had constant very fine snow all day, car is coated again but it's not settling. I await the verdicts for school opening tomorrow, main roads are clear and we're close enough to walk but it might be too icy.
DH is press-ganging the DCs to go out for a walk, there is much muttering grin

MumVsKids Sun 20-Jan-13 14:15:11

Ok finally have some little fine powdery stuff coming, but nothing to settle or accumulate.

<stomps feet furiously> I want tons of it!!!! grin

The map is a bit of a pain I agree! Particularly on the ipad. You can zoom in though.
Is this the one you are using? you can put in your own location obv!

LillethTheCat Sun 20-Jan-13 14:37:01

No the weather warning one. The other day I couldn't decide if I was in a yellow or amber warning.

GloriaSnow Sun 20-Jan-13 15:09:18

Snow's beginning to settle on the main roads on our estate now. The metoffice are saying that this is supposed to carry on 'til 6am tomorrow for us! Still, we've been out on the sledge and then come back to hot chocolate and DD2's birthday cake ~ she thinks this has been the best birthday ever!

That bit is a bit rubbish lilleth because even if you go to the five day bit instead of the map, it puts the warning symbol out that applies to the whole region even if its actually only a small part of that region covered not including yours.

PseudoBadger Sun 20-Jan-13 15:24:58

Snowing here outskirts of north London since 9ish.

redwellybluewelly Sun 20-Jan-13 15:27:18

Now have heavy driving snow - small flakes but its got very cold, started 15.12 a few miles north of Norwich

Porkster Sun 20-Jan-13 15:33:17

We've got loads of snow here (herts).

It has been snowing all day, very fine but heavy ifkwim.

Excellent sledging and fun had by us all today, until we got frozen feet.

Now we've got a roaring fire and knackered dog!

envy sad

wibblyjelly Sun 20-Jan-13 15:41:44

We've just had lightening-never seen that when its snowing before!

41notTrendy Sun 20-Jan-13 15:44:55

No snow yet in Nottm! Is it EVER going to come?! I'm v jealous of this talk of heavy snow. confused

Saltire Sun 20-Jan-13 15:47:04

Well no snow in North Yorkshire, don't know if we are meant to get it

schilke Sun 20-Jan-13 15:50:21

Our schools have made the decision to open tomorrow, so dc a bitangry

I have to say I'm utterly puzzled. According to the radar the snow band seems to have got stuck over East Anglia. It should have moved further north by now I'm sure.

lubeybooby Sun 20-Jan-13 16:00:07

Wow, nodded off for an hour on the sofa and woke up to another 2cm grin

So we've managed about 3.5 to 4cm today. (leicestershire)

LillethTheCat Sun 20-Jan-13 16:00:36

It was that warning map that put me off the whole site, but I will use it from now on for the 24 hour forecasts. Thanks for your help Kitten

Saltire Ive not seen any in North Yorkshire all day and my road is still completely clear. I think it is supposed to snow tonight though. Where abouts are you? Im near Richmond.

Why did that post? I wasn't ready to post! It looks like the snow band is moving much slower than first forecast, so EA is going to get loads. Should reach N. Yorkshire over night.

MumVsKids Sun 20-Jan-13 16:02:43

Well I've given up hope now sad

DDs will be most disappointed tomorrow - they were hoping for a snow day even though we live 5 mins walk from school on the flattest road in existence

MegBusset Sun 20-Jan-13 16:02:46

I'm in Norwich and no snow yet! Hoping it passes us by!!

MumVsKids Sun 20-Jan-13 16:05:22

Even met office are saying we're done at that sad

I'm officially gutted now!

Porkster Sun 20-Jan-13 16:05:38

Well I'd agree with that OYBBK, (we get Anglian news, so I guess that's us).

It has snowed here for about 7 hours now. We got home from sledging 2 hours ago and no trace of our foot prints!

Any word on east Fife for tomorrow am ( DH HAS to get to work in central belt tomorrow by car and am wondering whether to pack him off to a travelodge tonight) TIA

StillSlightlyCrumpled Sun 20-Jan-13 16:07:09

We have lots more too, it really is lingering!
OYBBK, I am desperately searching every long range forecast for the weekend and they are all different confused! Most confusing. Although none look anything like as bad as this weekend, would you agree?

Have to take DS to Birmingham childrens hospital tomorrow for an apt we have waited a long time for. Hope motorway ok in the morning. It could be a family trip if schools are closed! Joy hmm!

EndoplasmicReticulum Sun 20-Jan-13 16:08:06

North Yorkshire here too - nothing yet. BBC think it's coming overnight. We're under the Amber bit on Met Office warning. I'm prepared to be disappointed though, and would actually quite like everyone to get to school as mock exams for year 11 start tomorrow.

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 16:12:47

Wish mine would make a decision before the morning. I'll be walking and I'll have to set out at 6.30am. I'll be at school, when they make the decision at 7am! Nowt I can do about it though, I suppose.

SSC I wouldn't even try and hazard a guess at next weekends weather as breakdowns to warmer weather can be really messy! Will have a look Katie.

redwellybluewelly Sun 20-Jan-13 16:16:56

Meg its stopped, but has teh feel of more to come.

Katie, I think it's an option I'd consider. Although the coast might be a bit marginal for temps as soon as you get away from the coast there's potential for heavy snow from the early hours onwards.

StillSlightlyCrumpled Sun 20-Jan-13 16:19:05

That's probably why they're all confused then smile.

I do like all the snow but its starting to be a little inconvenient now!

Mo, I'd be quite startled here if schools are closed, mine won't be, but dds might be as half the buses aren't running hmm but dh has to go to London for a meeting with a colleague who is flying in. Trains seem to be on an emergency timetable too. The possibilities for chaos tomorrow in our household seem to be rather high! Who will be where is anyone's guess!

TeWiSavesTheDay Sun 20-Jan-13 16:23:55

South Northants: I've just measured and we've had an extra 1-2" today, which on top of Friday's make it 7-8" over the weekend! And it's STILL snowing. Quite fine, but so much it really builds up.

The roads are pretty clear but the paths are awful.

DD lost one of her only gloves unfortunately...

redwellybluewelly Sun 20-Jan-13 16:24:15

SSC thats how I feel, its not fun anymore

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 16:24:30

I've checked the depth and we've had a good 8cms fall today and it's still snowing now.

It's the problems of getting staff in from across town that bothers me. Lots of staff have to travel by train and I know a number of people live in reasonably remote places, which won't have been gritted.

Looks like I'll be covering with 1400 students on my own tomorrow then! grin Well, maybe only 1000, if students don't bother either!

LivingInAPinkBauble Sun 20-Jan-13 16:31:45

Snowing in Norfolk at the moment. Loads of teeny white flakes. Was thawing before, getting tired of the snow now. Would anyone else like it?

TheSilveryTinsellyPussycat Sun 20-Jan-13 16:33:27

digerd I was 10 in 62/3, we were in Devon for Christmas, at the time my gran lived opposite a field and we made lots of snowmen. Each week she gave us updates on the slowly dwindling one in the garden. That term, after our return to London, I was able to walk to school on top of the piles of cleared snow for most of term. I also remember the last pea-souper - DM walked us to and from school while it lasted, you literally (and I mean literally) could not see the kerb till you were right next to it. Quite glad to experience it the once!

In NE England, have been looking at Beeb weather and going shock, I will look at the met site instead.

PseudoBadger Sun 20-Jan-13 16:35:43

I have never known it snow for 8 hours straight!

MooncupGoddess Sun 20-Jan-13 16:37:11

Just stopped snowing in London after 7 or 8 hours of fine continuous snow. Probably another inch altogether, similar to Friday's. Walked through Hyde Park and it was amazingly beautiful, every tree and rosebush outlined in white.

MooncupGoddess Sun 20-Jan-13 16:38:00

And, astonishingly, the public transport system is still functioning!! Maybe they actually learnt something from the heavy snow in 2010/11.

Thanks, you are a star grin

slalomsuki Sun 20-Jan-13 16:46:55

West, West Midlands here and it's been snowing since about 8am. A good 2-3 inches so far covering up all the gritted roads. DSs have been sledging down a previously clear and gritted hill road today with no problem.

Don't know about schools yet, one says nothing but other says its likely to shut. Guess its because a number of kids come on busses from 20 miles away.

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 16:47:59

First All Staff E-mail sent. It's debatable for tomorrow! grin

Mo - 6 hours of silent reading then? grin

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 16:52:48

Pussycat
I was in south London and went out for a walk in the pea souper with my first love - it was so eerie, silent as the grave, couldn't see across a small road. It was yellowish green, hence pea soup. Then a faint ghostly shadow seemed to appear in the distance coming towards us gaining substance very gradually and changing shape. OOOHH!!! And so romantic, being young and in love.

X-post.
YAY for you!!!

Alexandra Palace park in north London today was also really magic.

Saltire Sun 20-Jan-13 17:05:06

lilleth - out of York, heading north {grin]

wildirishrose Sun 20-Jan-13 17:08:12

Our school is closed tomorrow (herts)

MirandaWest Sun 20-Jan-13 17:09:41

Nothing just to the east of York. Not convinced there will be any more but happy to be wrong.

I am envy I want lots more snow. I really really want a snow day!

pigleychez Sun 20-Jan-13 17:10:12

Anyone know what Central London is like?

DH's first day at his new job so really needs to try and get in.
Previously he would have just worked from home but he doesnt know what work/Project he will be doing yet!

Hoping the trains are running ok as its already an hours commute as it is.

Miranda, just wait til morning smile

More snow? I would settle for some! grin

TwllBach Sun 20-Jan-13 17:10:52

School is closed tomorrow grin

I really really want a snow day too envy

Ours will also decide at 7am, I'm generally there from 6ish but live 15 miles away so dreading journey

Pigley, I know that SWtrains are running a revised timetable, I don't know about other operators but its worth checking.

teta Sun 20-Jan-13 17:13:03

Walked the dog 45 minutes ago in the shropshire hills. It was like Narnia here, beautifully clean, pristine, white[has snowed fairly heavily].There was a bird singing that sounded like faint sleigh bells and i kept on expecting the snow queen/ice queen to appear!

I know I mustn't be greedy manky, but all Im asking is for one snow day!!

Twll envy

StillSlightlyCrumpled Sun 20-Jan-13 17:18:13

Redwelly - I know, fed up of it when it comes to things like DS' hospital apt. We live over an hour away so am dreading the journey. Mind you, DH has just arranged a days annual leave so we can go together in the bigger car. I'm just hoping that they grit/ clear the roads. Surely it happening over the weekend gives them plenty of notice to sort it.

Gah, just had a text message from our school saying they will be open as per usual tomorrow... sad

Really wanted a snow day!

TobyLerone Sun 20-Jan-13 17:18:58

I don't think we'll get a snow day here, even though it's been snowing all day.

twil envy roughly where are you?

Grrrrr our school open as well - just a delayed start to allow everyone to get in.

Not sure if our school will be open tomorrow. I work there at lunchtime. I hope to get to the hospital on Tuesday as i am having three painful teeth out!

We've had loads again today (brum). Both schools my dc go to are closed tomorrow.

MirandaWest Sun 20-Jan-13 17:24:06

I don't want a snow day - am invigilating at a different school tomorrow morning.

OYBBK will it be snowy early on in the morning? DC are with XH tonight so hopefully he can get them to school OK

No snow day for me or dd sad

Am impressed with all your schools. Have they contacted you all tonight?!

Miranda, I believe so.

I think I can safely say there will be no snow day here either, OYBBK!

It's been a very disappointing event for us manks!

MegBusset Sun 20-Jan-13 17:30:15

Ok we have snow now <cries>

Another day of having both DC at home may finish me off!

LIZS Sun 20-Jan-13 17:31:21

dc school will decide once it stops but another local school has said it will open. Had more today than on Friday.

TwllBach Sun 20-Jan-13 17:33:07

I'm in north wales MrsPoirot but tbf I think it's a combination of factors, albeit all stemming from the weather!

I've not been contacted but school has numerous communication methods so I've checked them - twitter and an iPhone app <posh>

also might have a day off on Tuesday as well

MrsAFlowerpot we were all just emailed by our head.

MirandaWest Sun 20-Jan-13 17:34:01

Thank you - will wait and see what tomorrow brings...

OYBBK what would you reckon about driving from SE Cornwall to Slough tomorrow, very early morning? DH is planning on leaving v early for a meeting and won't listen to me when I say the rest of the country is covered in snow!

We've been out in the sun most of today, without gloves/hats, and he just won't believe me or the weather reports for the rest of the country hmm.

snowflakehellokitty Sun 20-Jan-13 17:40:22

Snow carried on for a few more hours
Walked to local shop rd looks horrid
Girls back tom so will hv to drive tomorrow

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sun 20-Jan-13 17:42:33

Mooncup - I'm envy I'd have loved to have been in London in the snow, but didn't want the risk/hassle of getting back out to the 'burbs if the trains stopped running sad

I'm in the South East - near Blackbush airport smile The planes look lovely!!

We have had the odd light bit of very fine flaked snow today.

I went out in the car earlier, I hadn't been out in the car since it started snowing on Friday - there was about 10-12 cm on it, the lightest, fluffiest stuff ever!

I have to get up and get ready for work tomorrow as I need to leave the very minute I find out if it's open tomorrow or not. Big of a bugger, but will think of Maureen (who has to walk to work at 6.30am) and count my blessings!

TobyLerone Sun 20-Jan-13 17:44:07

Ours is pretty heavy now, and it's laying on the road now, which has been clear all day. Last night I offered to take someone somewhere later this evening and I wish I hadn't -- my road is like an ice rink sad

Hmmm. I'm pretty senior at school and yet don't think ill know/a decision will be made until morning. Yuk

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 17:52:55

There are 3 schools saying they are closed on the Council website already. It's useful to know sooner.

reastie Sun 20-Jan-13 17:54:08

I work in a school too and they have messages up on their website to say school open tomorrow so no snow day for me sad . I think they'd find it pretty hard to give a snow day though as there are GCSE/Alevel modules going on tomorrow.

Starfish, I think you will be ok, I don't think slough will have got too much more today and the main roads will probably be fine. Maybe a problem with freezing fog though.

Sparklingbrook Sun 20-Jan-13 17:57:51

YY to schools having made a decision to open put it on the website!! Then we will know. grin

mrsFlowerPot, Tis on our school websites. I expect I'll get the text in a couple of days knowing how crap it was on Friday!

Scruffalo Sun 20-Jan-13 18:03:13

Hoping for a snow day tomorrow here although its stopped snowing now and no more forecast. Roads are just slush now, so I guess the DC's school will open unless it gets badly icy over night. 13 schools listed as closed so far on the council website, but closest to ours is in the next town 6 miles away. Will be sad faces in the morning.

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 18:04:25

Oh the suspense is killing me! Head of HR has Face Booked to say likely to be closed, but I need written confirmation! (or a call from my boss) I just keep pressing refresh on my school e-mails!

Come on!! grin

NeverBeenToMe Sun 20-Jan-13 18:06:54

Finally stopped snowing here in Birmingham. Both DDs and DGS schools are closed.Still waiting to hear about the one where I work sad… could be an early start to get there ……

ok thanks oybbk, will let him know. The Slough Observer news report looked a little doom laden and not remotely helpful!

Dawndonna Sun 20-Jan-13 18:11:25

Think a fair few Norfolk and Suffolk schools will be closed, again!

Helenagrace Sun 20-Jan-13 18:14:56

My DC's schools have posted on their website that they expect to be open but will make the final decision at 7am. DCs highly unimpressed!!

MirandaWest Sun 20-Jan-13 18:15:25

I'm invigilating A level modules here tomorrow so hope that the snow isn't too bad for the students doing the exams

Lucycat Sun 20-Jan-13 18:20:22

We have no snow here either living in S Manchester - we rarely do tbh. I also have students doing an A level exam tomorrow so i don't want any snow - yet smile

lubeybooby Sun 20-Jan-13 18:22:12

NeverBeen I thought it had stopped a while ago too but it started again. I think yours might too looking at the radar. I am west of brum so it's all heading over me and to you.

kitten do you think the east midlands nottinghamshire will be seeing any ?

Laughalot, I do think you will get some later on this evening, guessing at around 11pm Not sure what time though. It could be heavy when it arrives.

laughalot Sun 20-Jan-13 18:53:19

MegGriffin Sun 20-Jan-13 18:53:35

Schools shut so snow day tomorrow.

LillethTheCat Sun 20-Jan-13 18:54:13

I think Im just out of the Amber area where I am.

Though Met office do have heavy snow forecast for us over night. Im in two minds if I want a snow day or not. Part of me would for useful reasons, but part of me would like to be able to get on with things as normal.

EssieW Sun 20-Jan-13 18:58:23

We're in Herts - it has snowed since just before 9am and is still going. School closed tomorrow...preschool will probably be open.

After five hours of snow it has now stopped outside here now on Norfolk/Suffolk borders!!

schilke Sun 20-Jan-13 19:03:22

Crumbs everyone being so community spirited here....5am snow clearing at secondary school and people busy clearing village school playground tight now. I would be helping (begrudgingly) but have just survived 9 year old dd1's party.

The council have even had people out gritting the pavements in our village shock I wanted a snow day. We have had another 5cm today - so 15cm since Friday, however main roads clear.

Dawndonna Sun 20-Jan-13 19:14:15

Still snowing this side of the border, Lottie!
grin

Mirage Sun 20-Jan-13 19:15:19

My DH is always asking me 'what your MN weather lady says',now OYBBKgrin. He has given up on any other weather forecasters.

It has snowed all day in Leics, and still coming down now.I am working on the farm all next week, plus looking after my cousin's pony and chickens as well as our dpony,so will be outdoors more than I'll be in.I'll try and take some photos whilst shepherding tomorrow.

lubeybooby Sun 20-Jan-13 19:16:33

OYBBK is this flash warning of heavy snow overnight correct?

www.ukweatherforecast.co.uk/weather-warnings/

ArkadyRose Sun 20-Jan-13 19:30:15

Suspect it'll be a snow day here in E17 tomorrow, as it's snowed light but steadily all day since 9am, it's still going, and it looks like it'll probably keep going overnight. DD3 had great fun helping me make "ice marbles" (squirt of food colouring in a balloon, fill balloon with water, leave outside overnight to freeze then remove balloon) to decorate our patio with. smile DP has said if she has a snow day tomorrow then he'll work from home too, so at least I won't be dealing with a bored 5-year-old all day by myself! grin

LivingInAPinkBauble Sun 20-Jan-13 19:30:58

Still snowing in Norfolk where I am. Been struggling to work all week, school where I work seems to have had more snow than near me so hopefully head will decide quickly as I am leaving earlier in the mornings at the moment.

Dawndonna Its started again here!! smile

MaureenMLove Sun 20-Jan-13 19:36:17

I will think of you Chipping! We are shut! grin Measured at 13cm in the garden just now.

Lubey, I've not seen that site before! It does seem to tally with met office warnings pretty well, which to me seem like a fair summary of the weather overnight into tomorrow.

I just can't believe that Wandsworth has seen 12 continuous hours of snow and it's still going. Depth of 15cm in my back garden.

Dawndonna Sun 20-Jan-13 19:57:14

Lottie, ds would like to know how much you've got, he needs to get your way tomorrow!

I've been shaking my fist at the countryfile forecast, the snow front coming in from the south west and still dropping everywhere but Manchesterangry. Is there a snow-phobic super villain repelling the snow from here? The snow-free zone is quite consistent and circular.

Dawn not sure but a lot!!! It hasnt stopped really since 1pm!!!

Dawndonna Sun 20-Jan-13 20:03:52

Maybe he'll get a snow day too! grin

That area over the SE/EA finally seems to be moving northwards again!

Some possibility for snow moving in across from the SW on Tuesday/Wednesday. No details yet but looks most likely to affect sw and central southern England (which is me) .

wibblyjelly Sun 20-Jan-13 20:04:16

Kitten, should it continue snowing overnight in East London? Thanks!

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 20:04:47

Our main roads are fine London bus routes and well gritted. But no other roads are and school is an old Victorian building on a narrow road.

Betcha trains are up spout so I will try to get to work.... But not very hard !

Wobbly, it should be over by around midnight I think.

My turn to ask a question grin dh is going into central London tomorrow. How much ended up settling?

digerd Sun 20-Jan-13 20:27:00

Oh darn it, Just looked again with my glasses on and it is still snowing powder.SE. Just hope it stops by the morning as my little dog now loves it, even when snowing, but I don't.

Dawndonna Sun 20-Jan-13 20:48:46

Four inches now and still snowing.

PeneloPeePitstop Sun 20-Jan-13 20:50:26

It's stopped hmm

Snowing here in Lincs now, but very very fine, so not making much difference. Wonder what I'll be waking up to tomorrow confused

Thank you Arkady smile

At last....we have snow in Manchester!!

Kitten, the countryfile Manchester snow-gap was for tomorrow. Please say we'll get some snow, sometime this winter. I'm feeling very left out!

Leesmum, so there isgrin, hope it stays and settles, I really really love snowgringrin.

snowflakehellokitty Sun 20-Jan-13 21:14:31

ArkadyRose - That sounds like fun, but doesn't it stain everything in site, including the kids??

Lubey - Just had a look, I might get 'snowed off' if that happens. Confused now, met website still showing 'cloud' in the morning and 'light snow' in the evening. I've also just read OYBBK's view that it tallys with the met site. Totally confused now!!

Maureen - You pull up that duvet and think of me!!

I love walking in the snow smile I don't even mind driving in the snow/ice (I lived in it for long enough not to be bothered by it and have winter tyres) but I fear some of the idiots on the road and the road I have to go to work on is steep and full of idiots and lorrys - sometimes idiots in lorrys sad and worst of all it means getting out of bed very early in the cold and showering in the cold bathroom - brrr Might risk it and leave the heater on overnight. Gulp.

We're in Sidcup Maureen

OYBBK I expect central London will be fine BUT getting there on overland trains will be very hit and miss.

Don't think any commuter routes are doing very well right now but they are moving slowly.

Just catching up.

educatingarti thanks for the tip re Aldi. I'll check them out. smile. I didn't know about wellie liners. Thanks so much.

It's still snowing the really fine stuff here. Stopped briefly and started again.

We have snow and rain forecast on Tuesday.

Manky, I can only see the snow falling under the street light, it's quite sleety looking. But, where there's precipitation there's hope...

edam Sun 20-Jan-13 21:38:40

OYBK, what do you think will happen in Herts. tomorrow - any more snow?

OYBBK

Central London is fine, just txt a friend on nightshift in W1.

Slushy but slippery pavements and easily passable with good footwear.

Open top tour buses are still going !

Trains running but likely to be v delayed.

What a difference. Have left very snowy Bromley behind to come back to virtually all the snow gone in Southampton. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Only damage seen so far is one of my flowerpots has exploded and shot cyclamen a good foot and a half over the front step.

Snow! grin It's lying too, though I am not convinced that it will last. But it's proper snow. grin grin

leesmum Sun 20-Jan-13 22:11:58

Manky coming down quite heavy here now....excited!!!!!

Thank you so much shattered smile that was really kind of you.

Edam, maybe some snow showers building up by mid afternoon or evening. At the moment not looking too dramatic.

Manky that's brilliant! It's made it over smile

LemonMousse Sun 20-Jan-13 22:19:24

Very disappointing in Co. Durham - was supposed to start @ 6.00 pm - now coming through the night instead - hopefully.

MirandaWest Sun 20-Jan-13 22:20:15

Nothing near York.....yet

redwellybluewelly Sun 20-Jan-13 22:22:39

I'd say a good 2 inches just north of Norwich - but incredibly fine sparkly powdery snow, our road is white side to side. Still coming down very lightly but determinedly.

Hey it's not as if you don't deserve it OYBBK. you helped me last summer with DS bday party. wink

Pan Sun 20-Jan-13 22:24:10

Bloody hell manky! It is isn't it. May postpone the cycling for tomorrow. Damn. It's heavy and sticking.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Sun 20-Jan-13 22:27:40

Not even a hint of it here.
