Perhaps some snow for southern England.

Maybe some snow for some of southern England and east Anglia in the early hours tomorrow. It is marginal and many will see rain instead, but I think that the chilterns may see some and perhaps the higher part of the Downs as well. Could be a messy mix, so don't get too excited!

germyrabbit Tue 04-Dec-12 07:57:13

yes they said may be -6 for tonight on last nights news

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 08:16:57

-6? I don't think that's likely, temps hovering a little above or a little below freezing seems to be about right I think. Funny tv forecast!
Mind you, the met office isn't even really going for rain tonight, tomorrow so lets see what happens.

thekidsrule Tue 04-Dec-12 13:15:17

i live in eternal hope,as i do every year grin

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 18:05:12

Certainly still the possibility for parts of the SE tomorrow morning. Nothing spectacular, just a little taste of winter.

Gets sleigh and looks eagerly out the window...

Backinthebox Tue 04-Dec-12 19:17:10

Happy joy! My only early morning start at work for the whole month (about 4am early confused) I'm in a fairly weather-dependent line of work.

Come oooooooon

headfairy Tue 04-Dec-12 21:22:14

OYBBK I'm hearing talk of more snow next week in the SE, accuweather is predicting several days of snow. I know it's a long way out in meteorlogical terms but what do you think?

poncyettia Tue 04-Dec-12 21:22:19

please, please, please, please......... grin

CanYouGetDownPlease Tue 04-Dec-12 21:24:31

Ever hopeful in Surrey <clutching sleigh>

headfairy Tue 04-Dec-12 21:26:25

canyougetdownplease me too, we're in Redhill. My South African neighbour is desperate for some, she loves a proper wintry wintergrin

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 21:26:53

Headfairy, I think it might be a bit too dry for that, but I think it's the kind of scenario where snow can pop up very quickly. I will be keeping an eye on things!

headfairy Tue 04-Dec-12 21:29:35

Oooooh , ok, fingers crossed for a bit of humidity to go with our cold air then!

CanYouGetDownPlease Tue 04-Dec-12 21:30:05

We are in Epsom, Accuweather are predicting December 15th for snow...I hope so smile

headfairy Tue 04-Dec-12 21:31:27

The only downside I can see is that it'll be gone by Christmas. But it might put a stop to ds asking me every day when it's going to start snowing!

digerd Tue 04-Dec-12 21:35:55

0.8 on my front door wall at the moment. Just looked outside to see if cloudy - no frost- or clear sky - frost-, but can't see any stars.
Thames Valley area. It was 0 last night at this time but by 7am this morning it was +6, so warmed up overnight as clouded over, I bet. Oh, outside has gone up to +1.6in a few mins.

No, thank you !!

Merrycuckingfistmas Tue 04-Dec-12 21:38:39

Is it going to snow in Milton Keynes?

BabylonElf Tue 04-Dec-12 21:42:08

Anything forecast for Derbyshire?

<goes to hunt out sledge and snow board hopefully>

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 21:43:51

Merrycucking, no idea I'm afraid, I expect not tonight, hilly areas most likely. However, perhaps later in the month.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 21:48:00

Babylon, not enough for sledging yet!

Just to remind you all I'm only an amateur and the professionals find it hard enough in marginal situations and this certainly is a marginal situation away from the north east.

rubyrubyruby Tue 04-Dec-12 21:48:03

I work outside.
I have 2 more days to work and then I finish for Christmas on Thursday.

No snow yet please.

Hulababy Tue 04-Dec-12 21:49:39

Am further north and only sleet been forecast as a possibility. Hoping so. I really do not want snow. I want to be able to drive to and from work, and get out and about. Too much to do to be held up with snow.

Merrycuckingfistmas Tue 04-Dec-12 21:51:19

I hope we get snow this year as I am on mat leave so won't have to fight my way to work like every other year!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:04:53

So, I hear on r4 that there's some snow in Essex and around the London area. Any reports?

rubyrubyruby Wed 05-Dec-12 07:07:04

We have quite a bit here - Cambridge.

PseudoBadger Wed 05-Dec-12 07:08:31

Snow in north London! Laying, big flakes but not heavy grin

LtXmasEve Wed 05-Dec-12 07:10:10

Woke up this morning (in Oxfordshire) to a very light sprinkling of snow, but it started sleeting at about 6am so it's just cold and damp here now.

I hate the 'inbetweenness' of sleet. Neither use nor ornament as my granny used to say smile

Shinyshoes1 Wed 05-Dec-12 07:11:39

I'm in Essex we have but thick fat flakes settling very quickly . However I can see it going by the school run leaving nothing but a distant memory <sigh>

PseudoBadger Wed 05-Dec-12 07:16:24

I should add I'm on the herts edge of green belt, by the M1/A1/M25

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:17:37

Snowing here grin happy days!!! Seems I was a bit pessimistic expecting it to stick to higher ground.

LRDtheFeministDude Wed 05-Dec-12 07:18:21

I've just woken up to a light dusting of snow. Very pretty, but it's melting off already!

I'm in Oxfordshire too.

It was a hard frost when I was walking home around midnight last night, though, and martyr's memorial was gleaming with it. Beautiful!

Ephiny Wed 05-Dec-12 07:22:11

It's more like sleet here really (east London), no snow on the ground sad

HousewifefromBethlehem Wed 05-Dec-12 07:25:56

It is snowing in Kent!!!

Woofsaidtheladybird Wed 05-Dec-12 07:29:06

Got nearly 2 inches here (am in the Chilterns) - eek!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:29:58

Or ground is already covered shock

It's always nice when I get a bit of the weather that I've warned about smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:30:30

Happy happy!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:31:49

It's quite a thin band moving south quite quickly and narrowing as it moves south, so we are already nearly at the back edge of it. Perhaps some showers to follow.

ChristmasFayrePhyllis Wed 05-Dec-12 07:31:56

We have a weather topic? <gobsmacked> It's amazing what you can find in Active Convos.

Bearandcub Wed 05-Dec-12 07:32:04

Snowing here, SW London/ Surrey borders

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:33:11

Tis a great place to look for warnings of impending weather and to chat about stuff that bores the socks off many people

OlaRapaceFru Wed 05-Dec-12 07:34:08

SW London. It's been snowing for the last half hour - doesn't look like it's settling though.

Doyouthinktheysaurus Wed 05-Dec-12 07:36:04

God, I hope we don't get snow, I hate trying to get to work in the snow!

I'm on the South Coast, half a mile in land, so fingers crossed it won't get this far down.

No sign at the moment, just very frosty.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:38:02

Doyouthink if you are east of the IOW it will be with you by around 9am. Whether it turns to rain or not will depend on your upper air temps at that time, you may get a bit.

south of snow hard frost.please don't snowsad

McPhee Wed 05-Dec-12 07:43:01

I can see IOW from my bedroom window

I'd love a bit of snow

Is it too much to ask those of you 'up north' to blow hard in our direction?

Nothing in Crouch End, think I would have noticed it earlier as I've been up since seven.

Nothing here sad

digerd Wed 05-Dec-12 07:44:42

OH NO! Got up at 7am and snow on the ground and snowing. Think it's stopped now, but didn't feel that cold opening the door to look outside.
Minimum in the night was only 1.8 plus. Skies still dark clouds - should be rain not snow. Must be much colder higher up. Grrrrr. Thames valley area north.

Nothing here either, just clear and frosty. envy

bigger it's startedangry

I meant buggershock

germyrabbit Wed 05-Dec-12 07:53:36

snow here, settling a bit gonna be fun on the roads

headfairy Wed 05-Dec-12 07:54:46

East Surrey here and big fat flakes but they look quite wet, not sure if they'll settle.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:55:02

I guess Milton Keynes did get some Merrycucking?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 07:55:51

our temp is going up quite quickly - at -.2C already.

Mrsrobertduvallsaysboo Wed 05-Dec-12 07:59:23

Been snowing here in SW London since 7...stopped now.

standard closed and Here begins my annual Xmas travel fretting bugger bugger buggerbiscuit

ArkadyRose Wed 05-Dec-12 07:59:52

It's snowed here in E17 in London and settled - not a lot though; maybe a 2/10 tops. It's melted to slush on the roads already.

stupid app stansted

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn Wed 05-Dec-12 08:01:07

Heavy snow in Croydon smile Proper big fat flakes of it.

We have melting snow in Wandsworth. Very sad!!

Nuttyprofessor Wed 05-Dec-12 08:06:27

It is a white, white world in Chelmsford.

Doinmummy Wed 05-Dec-12 08:09:06

We have thick snow here, Essex

digerd Wed 05-Dec-12 08:10:13

Can't see it melting yet, and in an hour I'm on foot to my dance class. Another cuppa.

PurityBrown Wed 05-Dec-12 08:11:17

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Doyouthinktheysaurus Wed 05-Dec-12 08:13:03

Oh crap, I'm near Worthing, does that mean we still might get someconfused

JKSLtd Wed 05-Dec-12 08:13:56

Heavy snow falling in south Essex right now.

Is it going to mess with all my plans for today? Grrr

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 08:14:16

well, am off to work! Good luck anyone who has it thickly. Shouldnt last too long today.

I am in East Kent. Sky looks grey and heavy. Just looked on the met radar and the big band of yellow something is about to hit is.

Come on you snow!!!!!!

BahSaidPaschaHumbug Wed 05-Dec-12 08:17:29

BBC site says sleet for me at 9am hmm worst of both worlds, that. Might just stay in bed.

mumat39 Wed 05-Dec-12 08:18:02

Woke up to snow in SW London. Love love love it! Kids SO excited, but there's not much so can we have some more please?

MrsHowardRoark Wed 05-Dec-12 08:22:10

It's snowing pretty heavily here in West Kent. It is settling but I think it will melt as soon as it stops.

NO Snow, east sussex, need to get to bank so hope it is not disruptive.

travellingwilbury Wed 05-Dec-12 08:23:57

Snowing in west Sussex now , where the buggery did that come from ?

The sky looks full , my boys are very excited .

Snow around Stansted airport, where I am. Told the kids to have another hour in bed so I can wait for the roads to clear before attempting the school run.

JKSLtd Wed 05-Dec-12 08:40:21

Starting to slow down in south Essex now, hoping it will melt and the roads recover asap as lots to do today.

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel Wed 05-Dec-12 08:40:42

We have a light dusting, enough to get the kids excited and for DD to wear her snowboots (she's a very literal child smile) but not enough to disrupt life. Phew and hurrah!

rubyrubyruby Wed 05-Dec-12 08:46:18

No work for me <<puts feet up>> wink

GoldQuintessenceAndMyhrr Wed 05-Dec-12 08:49:14

Slight snowfall SW London.

digerd Wed 05-Dec-12 08:50:48

30 mins and out on foot, hope I don't slip over , as our pavements not cleared as usual. Still + 1.6 out, not getting any milder. Might get there and is closed for today? grrrrrrr

Merrycuckingfistmas Wed 05-Dec-12 08:51:00

OhYouMerryLittleKitten we did get snow!
Only a little bit, enough to make a small snowman, not enough to Bring the town to a stand still or stop oh from going to work (happy about that onegrin

rubyrubyruby Wed 05-Dec-12 08:59:33

Well done OYBBK - you are amazing ! Xxx

Three cheers for OYBBK:

Hip hip hooray
Hip hip hooray

TuftyFinch Wed 05-Dec-12 09:11:02

Snowing in East Sussex. Yay!!! gringrin

TuftyFinch Wed 05-Dec-12 09:11:26

Hip hooray for Kitten grin

Snowing fat and chunky in East Kent, just starting to lay.

May not last but it's mighty perty.

Just started again grin

SkipTheLightFanjango Wed 05-Dec-12 09:16:39

Snow NE Essex. Bloomin school bus didn't stuck with my eldest for the day. One mm of snow and the world comes to an end angry

mummytime Wed 05-Dec-12 09:22:27

It snowed here, fortunately they have re-started gritting my hill. Drove kids to school, one school bus had broken down. My children were on time, lots still arriving 10 + minutes late, including a couple of coach loads. One slip, at about 2 mile an hour, by the children's school; but I made full use of my winter driving lesson a couple of years ago (fabulous, you get to use the skid pan!).
The youngest is off on a trip to London, so I'm wondering how long it will take with the M25.

LIZS Wed 05-Dec-12 09:25:02

Been snowing for an hour and half here (Surrey) and has settled but hopefully easing off now and cloud lifting.

gnushoes Wed 05-Dec-12 09:26:54

snowing on the South Coast, quite enthusiastically. sticking a bit.

Really fat and chunky monkey flakes. Great because it was only gonna be rain.

What changed and made it snow? Not sure how it works. Is it when a codd and a warm front meet and the rain in the clouds turns to snow?

DiamondDoris Wed 05-Dec-12 09:31:18

Second dose here in west Kent; earlier feathers now sleety stuff. Still slippery out but easy to avoid. Not yaktrax weather yet. Hope it melts.

GloriaSmud Wed 05-Dec-12 09:35:43

I think it is something to do with a warm front (the rain) hitting the cold. But I think it also has to be cold from the cloud all the way to the ground, otherwise whatever starts off as snow up high would melt and turn to rain on the way down.
<flounders helplessly and needs OYBBK to help!>

i see flakes in east sussex

Ours has stopped now but was a lovely taster for the season.

BiscuitsandBaileys Wed 05-Dec-12 10:47:32

<waves to fellow Kent mner's>
It was a lovely taster wasn't it DamnDeDoubtance
I love to look up at the sky and watch the huge flakes falling down!

RooneyMara Wed 05-Dec-12 10:50:07

Masses of snow in Kent.

It started on the way to school, then had to try and transport several children to a championship event up a steep hill, on our rubbish tyres, with skidding wheels and virtually no braking ability.

Then walk several hundred yards in ice, while 8 months pregnant.

I have to go and get them later too - really unsure about this, even our drive required massive revving and spinningto get up...

anyone know if it's likely to thaw out a bit by 2.30? I love snow but I have to DO things.

<waves back> grin

Ours is melting away now though we may get the odd flurry later.

Love a flurry.

RooneyMara Wed 05-Dec-12 10:58:17

Oh dear. I am so torn, I absolutely adore it BUT I've now got to get the car back down the drive, without crashing into the road, I've got to go back out there with my SPD and try and ICE the drive (our shared drive - neighbours never ever bother, it's always me with the shovel) and we're out of cat food, and I'm just knackered.

<moan, moan, whinge etc>

RooneyMara Wed 05-Dec-12 10:58:51

not ice it. Grit it, and salt it.

Can't even think properly!

JKSLtd Wed 05-Dec-12 11:13:26

Ours is melting, roads are clearing and the sun is out.
Dh to work, ds1 to sch but so far I'm stuck at home with other 2 DCs and no hold care so no Christmas lunch out as planned sad

rubyrubyruby Wed 05-Dec-12 11:13:38

Rooney - can you give the cat rice and a tin of tuna?

RooneyMara Wed 05-Dec-12 11:14:57

Good idea Ruby...thankyou. I have rice, no tuna, in fact no anything much but she occasionally has rapidly defrosted fish fingers when we forget!!

TobyLerone Wed 05-Dec-12 11:23:43

We had a lovely little flurry in my part of Kent smile Went on for a couple of hours, quite enthusiastically at times, but didn't really settle. I miss it now it's stopped!

LIZS Wed 05-Dec-12 12:48:13

Bright sunshine now smile but very cold. dd will be pleased netball practice is cancelled !

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 13:11:40

This was an occluded front, where a cold front overtakes a warm front. This gives an interesting profile to the temperature versus altitude. Bit hectic at the moment, can explain more later if people want.

It was marginal purely because the temps were marginal. Quite often though, when it is close something called evaporative cooling can take place. As moisture falls through a layer of cool dry air some of it evaporates. This takes energy and the energy comes from the heat in the air, so it cools the air further. Heavy rain can cool it enough that then the moisture remains as snow and falls all the way to the ground as snow. It can be hard to predict this effect.

Hope I made sense, can take questions this evening!

BahSaidPaschaHumbug Wed 05-Dec-12 13:18:12

Well we had about an hour or so of proper snow at 9ish in my part of Kent, it melted on contact with the ground and had all disappeared by 10.30. No problems on the roads here, all as normal.

TobyLerone Wed 05-Dec-12 13:38:49

Same here, Pascha. I'm sure we've discovered before that we live close to each other. DP's train was delayed 'indefinitely' this morning, so he had to work from home hmm

BahSaidPaschaHumbug Wed 05-Dec-12 13:41:15

I think we must do Toby. Within 10-20 miles or so I would guess.

greenhill Wed 05-Dec-12 13:43:21

Bucks had a light dusting of snow this morning and it sleeted on us as we walked to school. The paths were very slippy, but it has been sunny since and the only snow now left is in shade.

A mile from our house, there wasn't any snow at all.

Doyouthinktheysaurus Wed 05-Dec-12 14:29:54

Snow stayed away from this side and the other side of Worthing. DH got some in Hove though. It's melted now though....

Pleased not to have any tbh, managed to get to Hobbycraft which was amazing do very important jobs!

RooneyMara Wed 05-Dec-12 16:30:06

We still have a snowy garden and lots of it about but the roads are all just wet and slushy now, thankfully.

digerd Wed 05-Dec-12 17:26:57

Well, no more snow since early this morning, and at 9.15am, I was wending my way in wet snow in my small cul-de-sac which was slush on the mainroad pavements, in my non slip 13 year-old german boots. I was OK but young girl I met, who was wearing trainer type soles bootees, slipped several times.
Loads of traffic hardly moving on the road.
Got to dance hall safely, but only a handful there - others arrived later as hindered by traffic jams. Then soon the sun came out.
Dark now and still not melted in my road, and have to walk to physio tomorrow < scared face>Still +2 out - please cloud over in the night!!!!

Any more due? We had a sprinkling (SE London)...

JKSLtd Wed 05-Dec-12 20:39:11

Hope no more for south Essex, this morning really caused too much chaos.

Looked beautiful until anyone tried to go anywhere hmm

Friend put on FB last night, 1 inch tomorrow & he was right. He's just put 'snow all night' on FB, he's wrong isn't he? BBC didn't say snow just now on the tv.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten thanks for the explanation. smile

LostInWales Wed 05-Dec-12 21:15:53

I have come to stamp my foot and huff. We have a weather warning tomorrow, for rain. RAIN. Bah.

BelleDameSousMistletoe Wed 05-Dec-12 21:18:48

Aaaaaand, we had no snow in West Yorkshire. Woohoo! <happy>

ArkadyRose Wed 05-Dec-12 21:25:06

Forecast for London is very cold with a hard frost (yellow warnings of ice from the Met) but dry. I don't think we'll see any more snow here until next week, if at all.

gritter lorry has just driven past...

The cold feels like it's literally biting my nose out there tonight

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 05-Dec-12 21:53:43

Getting milder by day over the weekend, but don't get complacent, it looks to cool down again. Next real chance of snow in this region looks to be towards the back of next week I think.

SecretSantaFix Wed 05-Dec-12 21:55:13

please say South Wales is going to escape?

ChippingInAWinterWonderland Wed 05-Dec-12 21:59:32

OYMLK - do let me know when I need to get my snow tyres put on!! grin

LostInWales Wed 05-Dec-12 22:03:51

SecretSanta are you east or west, if you are west you have the joys of rain, even more rain. I am not bitter about this at all, oh no.

rubyrubyruby Wed 05-Dec-12 22:06:39

Well it looks like I will be back at work tomorrow and now have to work Friday too instead <<bah>>

SecretSantaFix Wed 05-Dec-12 22:07:23

South East, between Swansea and Cardiff,

SecretSantaFix Wed 05-Dec-12 22:07:56

I know where you are, Lost- a bit further north than my mum!grin

MrsChristmasVamos Wed 05-Dec-12 22:08:48

Hello, OYMLK ! smile

We had a little dusting this am, and more expected's feeling really Christmassy !

Wind biting cold....did you say there may be more snow for SE late next week ?

I am keeping a regular eye on you, you are much more reliable than anywhere else I know !

apparently its snowing in south west wales..eek please come a little further east

LostInWales Thu 06-Dec-12 11:02:17

It's not snowing in this bit of west Wales, it is raining of course, boo.

SecretSanta now I wish I'd kept a spread sheet. wink

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 06-Dec-12 15:46:20

It's going to be another one of those borderline weeks again I think. Those charts just keep teasing!

digerd Thu 06-Dec-12 16:51:16

Yesterday, my daughter's normal car journey of 40 mins was 2.5 hours, due to accident with 2 cars on top of each other. News reports today of 50 schools closing, Luton and Stanstead airport closed, buses and trains cancelled and 1000s of vehicle breakdowns - all due to 1" of snow.
-3 last night and snow still not all melted in my garden.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 06-Dec-12 17:17:18

Nightmare! I think they just weren't prepared for it all, the met office weren't really going for snow. Round here our council made no attempt to grit at all.

greenhill Thu 06-Dec-12 17:50:50

Snow still in my garden here too.

digerd how annoying for your DD. This country sometimes doesn't seem prepared for the tiniest amount of weather.

I bought my DD a new waterproof fleece lined coat from Milletts this evening, she was very pleased with it. I was not so pleased about her chasing her brother around the shop with the excitement of it!

digerd Thu 06-Dec-12 17:50:58

All the more disgraceful as our rates are extortionate, and they can't be bothered to pay the costs. In Germany we paid only community rates which remained the same for years at £75 per year ! We had loads of snow and much harder and longer winters.

RooneyMara Thu 06-Dec-12 17:57:00

Kitten, there's some rather dramatic stuff in the Express online saying that it's going to be the coldest winter, like, EVER, and so on - I'm sorry I closed the tab, it was linked to on the bottom of a link about Max Clifford that I clicked on on here.

I don't think the Express is necessarily worth believing about, well, anything, and never read it but - is there anything in this, do you think?

RooneyMara Thu 06-Dec-12 18:00:20

<deep breath>

Daily fail

this is similar story

digerd Thu 06-Dec-12 18:11:14

Yes, DD was really fed up, and I worry about the danger for her driving to work - she is a careful driver, I worry about the other reckless ones and the accident shook her up.
Had a smile at your DD chasing her DB round the shop in her new winter coat. Glad she loved it.

digerd Thu 06-Dec-12 18:24:19

Just looked at the Daily Fail link, and we had -3 last night. Lowest has been -10 in the night here in 2010, on my house wall. Really don't want -20 as had that in Germany for weeks on end and heating has to be on 24 hours a day.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 06-Dec-12 18:41:24

roony, I do think it will be colder than average from what I've read, but it would really have to be going some to beat the winter of 2 years ago!
Nice pics though on the link, have to give them credit there.

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn Thu 06-Dec-12 19:00:18

Temperatures to plummet to minus 3°C this week and could fall as low as 20°C in December

Isn't 20°C rather warm? wink

headfairy Thu 06-Dec-12 19:03:19

that Daily Mail link was from last week, end of November.

headfairy Thu 06-Dec-12 19:04:30

Soup... That whole article was full of mistakes. Did you notice the caption about people rapping up against the cold? hmm

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn Thu 06-Dec-12 19:11:03

Good lord, no. I didn't read any further than the headline and looked at the pictures grin

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn Thu 06-Dec-12 19:11:56

Maybe the people rapping were fans of Eminem.

headfairy Thu 06-Dec-12 20:22:13

Kitten, Sky News are carrying reports of a 'beast from the East' apparently bringing lots of snow on Mon/Tue to the SE.

Any credibility in this? Met Office says no.

Met office does actually agree...but they are of course not calling it a beast from the east

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0000 on Monday and 0800 on Tuesday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

Less cold over the next few days with higher daytime temperatures than of late so the mean temperature criteria is unlikely to be met this weekend, despite overnight frosts. There is now growing confidence that into the start of next week very cold air originating from the east or northeast will spread across the whole of England. An east or northeasterly flow at times will bring snow showers, particularly to the east of England, these sometimes heavy, and leading to locally significant accumulations. At present this spell of very cold weather looks set to last through much of next week and it is likely this alert will need to be extended.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link:

Ah ok my app isn't showing that. I did inwardly snigger at 'beast from the East' tbh

Me too. Love weather drama!!

Well the usual met office 5 Dayer is saying sunshine albeit with very low temperatures, so we'll see...

digerd Fri 07-Dec-12 15:55:09

We had +2 minimum last night and early this morning the snow was all gone.
Despite some sunshine today, it felt cold in the chilly breeze. Maximum was +6. Thames valley north. Hope the Beast From The East, gets homesick and returns to Siberia before getting here !

headfairy Fri 07-Dec-12 18:10:44

skies have cleared in W London and the temperature has dropped like a stone. Not looking forward to driving home at 11pm sad

This morning it was raining in Reigate town centre and snowing heavily at the top of Reigate hill grin It's only a difference of about 200m but it was enough obviously!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Fri 07-Dec-12 18:39:00

That's rather cool headfairy!

Kitten what are you thinking about the Eastern Beast? Will it bite us?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Fri 07-Dec-12 19:01:05

The beast from the east keeps retreating! I think though they aren't all they are cracked up to be, cos all though they are very cold, I'm not so sure they are as snowy as a good northerly or north easterly. I've not looked that up though to check my facts, Tis just my impression.

I'm sooooooooooooo wanting some snow!!!

headfairy Fri 07-Dec-12 19:26:35

It was a bit strange Kitten, not so much four seasons in one day as two seasons in one town grin

digerd Fri 07-Dec-12 21:38:12

Thames valley North here and temperature has remained constant at +5 /80% humidity @ 9.30pm, max was +6. Feels nasty damp cold.

digerd Fri 07-Dec-12 21:42:53

Is the Beast going home as I hoped? Any weather from the east should be warmed up by the North Sea according to my geography teacher. And the hot weather in summer cooled - aren't we lucky??

V amusing twitter post: @uksnowalert: Ladies and Gentlemen "The Pest" vs "The Beast" the fight airing all next week - watch this space #beastfromtheeast #pestfromthewest #uksnow

I want the beast, I want snow <whines>

Same. I'm cheering for Beastie, big time. The Pest can eff off

digerd Sat 08-Dec-12 13:37:12

What is the Pest from the West? Killer Flu?
Today's weather is awful, apart from it being a bit bright, it's damp cold + 6 atm. -6 is usually a dry crisp cold, but don't want a whip lash wind from Siberia as had that once in Germany at -15, and my scarf round my face froze from my breath.

Pest is mild south westerly air

They will be meeting at some time next week, and whichever front dominates will decide whether we have whiplash cold wind or murkiness.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 08-Dec-12 15:43:31

GFS is currently going for the westerlies to win at the end of the week, with lots of rain sad
Colder up in Scotland and snow could be an issue in hilly parts up there.
Models could switch again though, we shall see.

digerd Sat 08-Dec-12 16:12:18

Mild south westerly sounds good to me . Just had a man in my house who read my gas and electric meter.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 08-Dec-12 16:33:53

That is a good point, it's nice if the bills aren't stupidly high.

pest from the west until all the Xmas travel is done please them I don't care!smile

digerd Sun 09-Dec-12 10:10:16

Last night minimum +4, so getting milder, and now skies clearing and some sunshine + 7 atm

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 09-Dec-12 10:13:08

Tomorrow is going to be a bit of a shock after today I'm afraid. Also looks like the Pest will be held at bay until the weekend now.
Very gloomy here and damp (humidity at 90%)

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel Sun 09-Dec-12 12:29:59

<waves new thermals defiantly at the weather>

digerd Sun 09-Dec-12 14:11:07

Still bits of blue sky here, +9 degrees but feels chilly damp out and more like +6 we had yesterday. min +4 in the night, so heating went off sooner this morning- less gas used - yeah!!

so cold this week? But no snow? <Shakes fist at sky>

We neeeeeeeeeeeeeed a snow day!!!

digerd Sun 09-Dec-12 20:09:04

8pm and already down to +4 with 76% humidity, so probably a much colder night to come. It did feel really nasty cold even at +9 today. Roll on Spring, I say, had enough of winter already, and the long dark nights < miserable face>

alcibiades Sun 09-Dec-12 20:50:20

Although I like looking at snow (it's still as magical as it was when I was a child decades ago), I'm a complete wimp when it comes to slippery surfaces. So I'm very ambivalent about the weather in winter. And, like digerd, the long dark nights don't help - I don't mind it getting dark in the late afternoon, it's the dark mornings that get me down.

I've started a new thread for collecting useful and informative websites, and there's one site that gave me the idea to do that, and that's run by Reigate Grammar School: It might be useful as it's a bit more localised than the MetOffice sites, plus there are explanations I can (mostly) understand.

I know nothing about the school, but how cool is it to have their own weather station? And a teacher who'll go that extra mile to help youngsters have a better understanding of the weather. smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 09-Dec-12 20:54:02

They look like they know what they are doing. Practically the same set up as my station down to the same software grin

Good idea to do that thread alci.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 09-Dec-12 20:57:25

It is a very nice website.

digerd Mon 10-Dec-12 09:25:48

Just remembering being in Gran Canaria over Xmas /Newyear, and hours of daylight were 7am-7pm and 30 degrees, but not like our 30, it was fresh , dry air, and felt more like our 23.
Lovely blue skies so far today, +2 minimum in the night. Just opened the door and air feels lovely, clear and fresh @ +3. Not damp cold today, as yet.

JKSLtd Mon 10-Dec-12 11:08:10

Lovely sunshine in south Essex today smile

Kitten - are we to expect more chaos snow anytime soon do you think?

headfairy Mon 10-Dec-12 11:17:49

alci tis a very good, highly selective independent school, very difficult to get in to and expensive when you do... I'm not surprised they have their own weather station, probably got their own satellite in space too grin

iPhone weather app is now showing heavy snow for SW London on Wednesday. Met office says cloudy...

digerd Mon 10-Dec-12 19:10:11

We had lots of sun today also. Now only +2, and feeling colder. Expect even colder tomorrow, unless it suddenly warms up over night, which I doubt.

JKS. Do you border South Herts?

JKSLtd Mon 10-Dec-12 21:31:26

Nope not Herts.
My iPhone app says sleety stuff overnight but no snow showing up. Hopefully we've dodged it this time.

alcibiades Mon 10-Dec-12 22:00:47

headfairy - "their own satellite" grin.

Given the advances in recording systems, I reckon most schools should have one. I would like to have one here, but I have a very small garden, and probably the pigeons would land on the anenometer, and crap in the rainfall gauge.

Meglet Mon 10-Dec-12 22:05:57

So the forecast for Hampshire is cold, cold, cold, cold, WET.

But no snow sad.

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel Mon 10-Dec-12 22:12:47

meglet I think we're fairly close? I'm NE Hampshire, we have one solitary snowflake on the BBC forecast for Thurs, followed by heavy rain angry

No snow forecast here * sniff * sad

TobyLerone Tue 11-Dec-12 08:38:53

Freezing here in Kent, but the weather says no snow sad

BahSaidPaschaHumbug Tue 11-Dec-12 08:49:23

Toby its snowing here!

BahSaidPaschaHumbug Tue 11-Dec-12 08:51:55

Proper big flakes too. Forecast says rain or possibly sleet.

TobyLerone Tue 11-Dec-12 09:04:05

shock Blue sky here! Bloody freezing, but blue sky and sunshine!

BahSaidPaschaHumbug Tue 11-Dec-12 09:29:50

Didn't last long but there is a sprinkling on the ground. Blue sky here now too.

digerd Tue 11-Dec-12 09:55:21

-1.6 in the night, and woke to blue skies, but now grey skies and 0. Forecast is for freezing fog next few days and looks like freezing misty murks at the moment. < grrrr>

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 11-Dec-12 14:07:46

There could be a bit of snow around on Thursday morning. If you like snow, make the most of it. Though don't give up on the rest of the month just yet...... Some hints in the latest model run of just possibly some more to come towards the end of next week( thigh the model keeps flipping so don't hold your breath)

digerd Tue 11-Dec-12 16:34:36

0 degrees since 3.30pm, and feeling colder in house, so having to put heating heating up 1 degree 3 hours earlier than usual grrrrrrr.
Walking to dance class tomorrow, and last week was so cold in the hall, this week I shall be going and dancing in several layers that I can take off as I warm up. The heating will probably have been increased, and I'll pass out.
Refuse to pay £7 for taxi for a 5-minute walk< grumpy face>

-5 here tonight! (Reigate)

Lifeisontheup Wed 12-Dec-12 07:21:41

We've got a little bit of snow here today (Hampshire/Surrey borders) I'm sure it wasn't forecast, just fog which did happen last night but had gone by 5am this morning. Very pretty but very cold.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 07:40:58

That's the thing I guess with fog, sometimes it can thicken up into stratus, so it's the snow equivalent of drizzle (but much prettier!)
We have a low of -5.8c. We live in a bit of a frost hollow so tend to be down by a couple of degrees compared to other local areas.

GloriaSmud Wed 12-Dec-12 07:51:50

-3.1 here (Leicester)

Shinyshoes1 Wed 12-Dec-12 08:03:23

I'm in Essex and I didn't get snow sad

Are you any better today OYMLK?

At 7.30 this morning is was overcast and DH did not need to scrape the car windows.

By 8.30 everything was covered in a thick layer of ice and frost, and the fog had started to descend.

It's now 9.30 and its getting foggier.

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel Wed 12-Dec-12 10:22:55

-5 and bitter here this morning. (NE Hants)
No snow though angry
We had all our fog yesterday/last night I think, unless it's due to arrive later?

headfairy Wed 12-Dec-12 11:21:02

Properly cold in east Surrey this morning. -5 on the school run and still hovering between -1 and 0. Not even a glimmer of sunshine to warm things up like yesterday. The clouds look really heavy too, surely we'll have a flake or two today?

bellabelly Wed 12-Dec-12 11:28:19

OhYouBadKitten, my mum used to sometimes say "Oh it's too cold to snow" - I never understood if she was being serious or making a silly joke. Can you shed any light on her baffling statement for me? Can it actually be too cold to snow?

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel Wed 12-Dec-12 12:07:57

It's now a balmy -2 here smile

digerd Wed 12-Dec-12 16:21:18

It was -4 here, and everything looked sparkling silver - rather pretty - all the leafless trees/bushes, and didn't melt during the day as never got over 0 degrees. Mist cleared quite quickly, but sun didn't last long.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 18:39:57

Bella, not at all, it snows in the arctic smile
However our coldest weather tends to come from very dry air masses, which makes it an observational saying rather than a causal statement if you see what I mean.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 18:41:36

Manky, not yet, going to talk to the gp about some time off so I can see if rest helps. (Bit of a novel statement that for me!)

Hello! Well we thought we had snow but apparently we didn't. Here confused

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 18:48:29

grin we had rime too. Highlighted the cobwebs very nicely!

I have never heard of rime blush Is that bad? The cobwebs all looked fabulous though.

QueenoftheHolly Wed 12-Dec-12 18:50:44

Lying in hospital at beginning of (I fear) a long slow induction. I've always loved snow so much & really want LO to be born when its snowy :-) worth just missing out on the 12/12/12 birthdate for!

I'm in the right place (herts) so fingers crossed.
Also FX for snowy Christmas, keep us up to date kitten you're a star! grin

QueenoftheHolly Wed 12-Dec-12 18:53:04

Where I come from - rural midlands - a very thick white frost was always called a hoar (sp?) frost.
Anyone else heard of this?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 19:05:45

There are subtle differences between hoar and rime frost. From what I understand....

Rime frost comes from a very cold moist atmosphere like freezing fog. It usually freezes on contact and forms an icy layer.

Hoar frost forms from supercooled dew droplets and grow as ice crystals. So if it has a feathery appearance growing from leaves and the such like it will be hoar frost.

Of course as the weather changes, you could get one and then the other!

wierdest thing this morning. We woke to about a cm or two of snow (east anglia) but it was literally in our road and one or two more - as I drove dd to school about a mile away there was none at all...spooooky!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 19:08:45

So how is the induction going yet? Any niggles?

derr - just read about rime frost - must have been that blush

JKSLtd Wed 12-Dec-12 19:29:37

We definitely had hoar on fences, flowers, etc. It was beautiful smile

QueenoftheHolly Wed 12-Dec-12 21:24:20

Really interesting to know about hoar & rime frosts. I find weather fascinating & it's so complex.

Certainly a few niggles coming along now! Been warned by midwives to expect it to take a while though...

Just went outside for a short wander & it's milder so maybe no snow here after all.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 21:34:56

Very hard frost here I think. -3.6 at the moment, I think we will be down to -6c by morning, perhaps -7.

It's going to be a long old night for you isn't it.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 12-Dec-12 21:53:42

Might be overestimating my lows there.

mumat39 Wed 12-Dec-12 22:37:28

I've never seen/noticed spiders webs like the ones I've seen today. They're amazing! I was going to ask about them but now I know it's rime frost. Cool!!!

ChippingInAWinterWonderland Wed 12-Dec-12 22:49:21

We had hoar frost here yesterday - the cars sharp edges looked beautiful, little ice trees grin

We had rime frost here today - the spiderwebs looked amazing grin

Tonight, when I went out at 6pm the ice on the car was like a sheet of frozen water, not the normal 'ice on the windows' - very unusual (to me).

Tomorrow I'm getting my winter tyres out of storage and booking in the fitting!!

Love with winter!!

mumat39 Wed 12-Dec-12 22:57:36

Kitten, just read one of your posts again. So it was rime on the car too. Cool!!! The ice on the car windscreen was like nothing I've see before. It was actually beautifully uniform and really hard to scrape off. It almost looked like sandblasted glass. This was at midday. Love the weather. Thanks again!

mumat39 Wed 12-Dec-12 23:03:22

X posted with chipping. Snap!

GloriaSmud Thu 13-Dec-12 07:35:36

Morning all. A slightly chilly -6.1 here (Leicester) Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

-4 here in my part of Tameside

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 08:58:23

Queen, are you still hanging in there?

morning from Worcestershire -6. sad How is it going to go from this to torrential rain tomorrow? I am intrigued. confused

digerd Thu 13-Dec-12 09:06:47

Ditto for yesterday. -4 and sun very low in sky at the moment. No wind and everything white with frost. Was -2 at 10pm last night, so went down only a further 2 degrees. So why did my front room go down from 22 to 18 in 4 hours which caused the heating to come on - very low to keep room temperature from dropping even lower. And still took 2 hours to get back up to 21? grrrrr.
Supposed to be milder on Saturday .

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 09:10:28

I know! It's going to be very odd! In the SE it's going to probably get below freezing again tonight then the temp will start to rise a bit before midnight or so and by midday tomorrow it will be around double digits!!! As the temp rises so will the rain move in. All to do with an Atlantic low pressure that seems to just effortlessly move in frontal systems with the euro high in retreat.

surface pressure charts show what an impressive beast this low is!

You know that pub that flooded OYMLK? They were about to open in November and they flooded again? They are due to reopen tomorrow night. I hope the rain isn't too bad.

Blimey that chart looks terrifying. Wind and rain. sad

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 09:18:53

Oh sparkling sad I hope not too. In the grand scheme of things it wouldn't normally cause too many problems as it is only one day of heavy rain before a few days off from it, but it depends on how deep the surfaces are frozen in part. Longer term forecast isn't great though, lots of rain showing towards the back end of next week.

It's all very interesting. I am looking forward to getting out of the minus temperatures but not the getting wet a lot. grin or maybe losing my fence. sad

digerd Thu 13-Dec-12 09:28:10

Don't mind wind and rain if it comes tomorrow, instead of Saturday, as tomorrow morning I am dancing again and this time I am taxied to and from dance hall <grin face>. Will be walking this morning in the sunny crisp and even weather to Physio.<smile face>

digerd Thu 13-Dec-12 09:32:43

Last time we had stormy winds, I did lose some pretty lattice fence tops, and one is still hanging as have a climbing rose still attached to it . < sad face>

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 10:36:56

That's really irritating. I hope it hangs on for you!
We got our fences done properly after last winters relentless near gales. I love not having to worry about them. Got our gutters replaced too so no more frantic poking them with a stick!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 10:37:20

What sort of dancing do you do?

digerd Thu 13-Dec-12 12:01:04

For years I did ballet, modern and jazz, and then taught, but now I'm old and and past all that. So now I go to line-dancing which is low-key, stepping and turning in styles of mambo, cha cha, rumba, jazz, waltz, including some cow-boy stuff too. My faves tend to be the flowing, floating styles to romantic music. But love having a mixture of styles. makes the 2 hours more interesting. <smile> I put up with the aches and pains afterwards !!< resigned face>

bellabelly Thu 13-Dec-12 13:33:51

Thanks OhYouMerryKitten, my mum's comments make a bit more sense now.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 13:42:27

That sounds like in digerd!

Bells, you are welcome smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 13:42:48

Fun, not in!

digerd Thu 13-Dec-12 14:00:28

Thanks kitten - I love it.
At 11,30 the skies were already grey, and still hovering around 0, but no precipitation < posh word I learned on MN>, and the frost still lingering. Noticed it was all in spikes, like rose thorns or bristles about 0.5cm or less. Have some gorgeous intricate lace cobwebs on my small conifers that I couldn't have done so expertly myself with a spray can, and artistically placed too. The grass was standing up in a short spiky hairdo! Awesome

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 19:26:45

Sounds beautiful smile

What a shame that its all going to go to mush tomorrow sad

I don't want the mush.
Just read this on twitter:@TWOweather: Sensational ECM 12z tonight. #thinksnow for many by Dec 22nd. Almost no support for this from the GFS 12z. Buzz later

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 20:05:10

Ooooo, I've not been following the ECM so much recently. Will take a peek.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 20:11:03

Well well, that is interesting. No support from the other models, but certainly something to raise the spirits a little. I will wait til tomorrow and see if its still trending that way before I get everyone's hopes up!

There is yucky sleety rain falling in south west London. Oh the disappointment!!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Thu 13-Dec-12 22:22:45

sad the start of the warm up.

nooooooo not the 22nd <can't take another year of travel stress we fly that day>angry

digerd Fri 14-Dec-12 16:44:49

Forecast was right last night , 0 at 22.16 and +5 at 7am and lots of rain but not wind here. +9 now. But it was very dark and dismal this morning in the house < peevy face>. Lots of rain all day. Just opened the door and skies are partly clear and feels very mild< happy face>

It hasn't really got light all day here, the rain is torrential, roads have started to flood again. sad It is warmer though.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Fri 14-Dec-12 16:53:54

D&P don't worry, no model support for that scenario. Looking like mild rain at the moment.

Sparkling, it's been grim hasn't it.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Fri 14-Dec-12 16:55:00

We had a nice blowy spell, didn't really realise cos I was dozing on the sofa but dd arrived home looking like she had been hanging out of a cockpit window during landing!

grin OYMLK, two v soggy DSs arrived home today. Shoes in the airing cupboard to dry.
