Snow next week?

Hello
I just wondered if anyone has heard about it being really cold next week with snow showers?
Ooh I do hope so (fingers crossed for a snow day).

PinkSoccerMum Tue 20-Nov-12 16:01:15

What area is?? <prays it's not mine>

PinkSoccerMum Tue 20-Nov-12 16:01:47

that sorry

Urgh. I hope not

MegGriffin Tue 20-Nov-12 16:07:28

Someone on facebook said next week is going to be really cold (so must be true). I looked on met office and it mentioned wintery showers and on metcheck showed snow showers so I though i'd ask one of our super weather experts if they knew anything.

Shinyshoes1 Tue 20-Nov-12 16:07:40

scotland and the midlands probably, further south, I doubt it

MegGriffin Tue 20-Nov-12 16:08:19

I'm in the south.

MegGriffin Tue 20-Nov-12 16:08:59

Oh well I can dream I suppose.

It best not in the south. 8mo pg and a hill to/from the dcs school. I will not be happy if it snows!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops Tue 20-Nov-12 16:10:48

I've bought DS a sledge, so it won't snow for 20 years!

Shinyshoes1 Tue 20-Nov-12 16:12:16

I know it's going to be very cold in the South middle of next week. Minus 2 at night and 4 degrees during the day. No snow forecast though

RooneyMara Tue 20-Nov-12 16:20:57

Stacey are you me?! smile

Actually I'm not ready so you can't be grin

I will use current condition as supreme excuse to stay indoors and NOT go to school, hurrah.

Well, I'm working backwards at the moment, looking at the 6 th dec, GFS has a lovely wintery chart, with a high pressure blocking the Atlantic. Temps of freezing and snow across the northern half. Now of course it's way too early to be accurate but its very exciting!

Coming forward to beginning dec we have temps in the 0-5c range and looking showery.

GloriaSmud Tue 20-Nov-12 21:58:08

They're getting quite excited on met-monkey (weather message board) that for next week, the signs are there that colder weather is a-coming. I don't think they can tell at the moment what form this cold could be ~ it could just be frost, fog etc and that's it, or it might start as frost, fog and then after a while, move on to snow. The last few days of November/beginning of December could be interesting!

IwishIwasmoreorganised Tue 20-Nov-12 21:58:55

What about South Wales?

Will we be getting any of the white stuff?

BelleDameSousMistletoe Tue 20-Nov-12 22:01:16

No. Please tell me it's not going to snow anywhere in the UK next week?

Bloody bastard snow. I live in Yorkshire on a bastard hill that's not gritted. As if that's not bad enough, I have to go to Glasgow and Edinburgh on Wedneday and Thursday next week. <sobs>

Next week.....
<drum roll>

According to gfs Maybe widespread wintery showers even in the south grin GFS shows it much colder, temps a little above zero.

Met office seem to be going for a milder option.

We will see which is right.

Exciting!

Too early to say when and where! Not expecting prolonged stuff out of this set up, just a taste of winter.

picnicbasketcase Tue 20-Nov-12 22:04:03

Ooh I do hope so.

IwishIwasmoreorganised Tue 20-Nov-12 22:05:29

Just a taste is fine to start with!

I'm keen to find out how my new car goes in the snow!

Moodykat Tue 20-Nov-12 22:06:28

No no no! Not next week, I have no boiler!

I guess the most likely scenario is wintry over northern hills, but GFS suggests more...

Piemistress Tue 20-Nov-12 22:09:11

Hopefully not as I am moving house!!

RooneyMara Wed 21-Nov-12 07:27:48

I'm bewildered that anyone would be looking forward to driving in the snow grin I tried it two years ago, never again.

Is it a specially winter tyred car? Sounds brill if so!

BelleDameSousMistletoe Wed 21-Nov-12 07:32:05

I don"t think anyone who has to travel for work/school would look forward to it. sad

Even if you have a car with winter/snow tyres (which I do) it's bloody treacherous (not to mention a pain in the arse getting the tyres changed). Plus, it's not just you driving - anything can happen. Like when I slid down a hill of sheet ice and wrote my new car off

Bring it oooooon...

RooneyMara Wed 21-Nov-12 07:39:46

Yes indeed Belle, it's terrifying - I know people whose car was hit by someone else sliding unstoppably towards them. our car slid around like it was on ice skates for the first time, when I tried driving that time.

It was awful having so little control.

<pats self> I don't think I'm you rooney but I've never had it proven that I'm me either, so who knows!

grin

Try not to fret too much about next week, unless you live in northern hilly areas! And even then it may not happen. It does to me at first glance look a bit warmer and drier than yesterday's GFS charts

Charts for first week in dec have changed quite considerably. A teeny less cold than they showed yesterday and drier.

Must dash, going to be late for work!

End of next week is looking very interesting at the moment! Just be prepared in case the models verify.

PestoFrostissimos Thu 22-Nov-12 08:14:07

<<waxes skiis>>

grin

BelleDameSousMistletoe Fri 23-Nov-12 20:58:56

Any update, OYBBK? I'll be in Scotland on Wednesday/Thursday...

Sorry belledame, I've not had chance to look, lots of real life and lots of more immediate weather concerns. Will look in a bit.

Nothing really showing this coming week, maybe a bit of hill snow. The first week in December though...still showing potential.

BelleDameSousMistletoe Sat 24-Nov-12 07:25:54

Oh, thank you for looking.

Hope you're ok? Not flooded?

Helenagrace Sat 24-Nov-12 09:40:37

Noooo not snow!!! I'm moving on December 3rd from Lancashire to Sussex! Snow will wreck out plans.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

I'm ok BelleDame, thank you for asking. Will start looking properly again after this weekend smile

(Only cos the models are hard to keep up with with this storm a comin')

Bunbaker Sat 24-Nov-12 13:27:18

"Ooh I do hope so"

Ooh, I do hope not. I assume you don't go to work, don't have DCs at school a bus ride away and don't live on a hill. Snow is lovely when it doesn't inconvenience people, but it is a massive inconvenience for me on a weekday.

JenaiMathis Sun 25-Nov-12 05:15:14

I don't think the ground could cope with much more precipitation, tbh.

GloriaSmud Sun 25-Nov-12 08:46:22

I think that after tomorrow, there's not much rain forecast in the next week or two so the ground should have a chance to dry out. It's forecast to get colder though.

Bunbaker Sun 25-Nov-12 08:49:41

No snow forecast for here next week (South Yorkshire)

Yeah, Tuesday could still be showery, but not adding to the total burden of rain in the rivers really, then the risk of showers tends to be more towards he east and northeast which isn't so bad. Showers could become more wintry, especially over the NE by next weekend.

Labradorlover Sun 25-Nov-12 14:09:18

Come on the snow!!!! Last winter was shite. Practically nothing, just lots of fecking stupid wind.....

I'm not sure its going to be the start of a prolonged cold spell I'm afraid, some models show around a week of cold then back to wet.

GloriaSmud Sun 25-Nov-12 20:24:25

As usual, the Express has nailed it with their forecast! grin

Meglet Sun 25-Nov-12 22:40:54

How I long for a decent covering of beautiful white snow with the sun in the sky. We can manage on foot, and even in the bad winters the main roads are ok within a couple of days.

Just sick to death of grey skys and rain.

Deja Vu Gloria!

ClaimedByMe Mon 26-Nov-12 08:19:16

This winter is looking similar to last year, wet, grey and mild!

BelleDameSousMistletoe Mon 26-Nov-12 17:40:06

Good! I bloody hate bloody bastard snow. <comforted>

Claimedbyme, what makes you say that? Cold start to December with below average temps predicted for at least the first couple of weeks.
I'm not saying you are wrong, just wondering what you are basing your prediction on?

Well, it's the battle of GFS v UKMO!

Both fairly comfy for this week, things cooling down and generally settling down. Some wintry showers later this week for northern hilly areas, esp in the east.

Then Sunday.

GFS has milder air coming in from the west Maybe a bit of a snow battle between cold and warm air. Don't get excited though.

UKMO keeps a cold block, drier air but perhaps some snow in the east. Sadly that's as far as the model goes.

Now ECMWF follows the GFS pattern but does then reintroduce cold air.

Something to ponder. The wettest November on record across the UK was in Nov 2009. We all know what winter 2009-2010 was like!
Don't judge a winter by its November!

ClaimedByMe Mon 26-Nov-12 21:53:55

Nothing scientific, just feeling I suppose, if we get a bad winter it's usually bad by now, we have only had a few frosty days here and there. I still haven't got the wintery feeling and this is Scotland, we are normally slipping and landing on our bums by now!

Claimed, I think that you will find this link about nov 2009 in Scotland interesting smile

I have no idea how this winter will pan out. There were a few pointers to a colder winter earlier this autumn including the record low sea ice this summer.

Met office models suggest colder than average but not likely to be as severe as 2010
And
enhanced levels of snow compared to last year, even though the winter may be drier than average (with very high uncertainty on precip levels)

All fascinating stuff but only time will tell!

GloriaSmud Tue 27-Nov-12 11:33:55

The metoffice have issued a Cold weather Level 2 Alert for some regions, Friday am-Saturday am, for frost, ice and fog.

redlac Tue 27-Nov-12 11:38:16

trufact - on this very day in 2010 is started to snow in my wee town in Central Scotland and it stayed for 2 months!!! I remember cos today is my birthday smile

GloriaSmud Tue 27-Nov-12 11:47:22

Happy Birthday, redlac!
And what a nice 'birthday present' that was (if you like snow, that is!)

Oh bloody hell - DD couldn't get to school this morning because of the bloody rain - took her 2 hours to get half way through what would normally be a 1 hour journey before having to turn back - she will never bloody go to school if it snows!

redlac Tue 27-Nov-12 11:57:04

thank you! It was a nice birthday present for a couple of days but after I had cleared the drive for the 40th time it kind of took the shine of it smile

Piffpaffpoff Tue 27-Nov-12 11:57:54

I can see snow on the hills from my windows - on the very top of the Ochils and the big hills around Loch Lomond. Is v pretty but I dont want any where I am thank you very much!

Piffpaffpoff Tue 27-Nov-12 12:00:51

Redlac I remember that (I'm in C Scotland too). We have brilliant photos of the kids on a pile of cleared snow in our garden that was about 8ft tall and it didn't entirely melt till towards the end of Jan. I was able to ski down our street!

That's an early Level 2!

Happy Birthday Redlac!!!

Models are falling in with a cold scenario for at least the first half of December. GFS is starting to agree with UKMO I think. Just looked at the charts and oh boy, they look like proper winter. For instance by the end of next week they are showing wide spread max daytime temps of around 0C with showers coming a long way inland from the east.

<goes to lie down to recover from thought> - crashing straight from autumn to winter again.

I think this thread is going to get very busy!

pepperrabbit Tue 27-Nov-12 21:24:51

oooh, proper winter!
grin

aPirateInaPearTree Tue 27-Nov-12 21:29:40

south devon. it's cold!!

mild part of the world. showing 1 degree for a xmas fair on the 8th dec.

bollocky cold. that'll be the heating on then!

Yup to the heating, we've hardly needed ours so far!

One proviso is that the models have been all over the place til this evening, so they will still need watching to make sure they don't change their minds.

So snow showers more and more in north eastern hilly areas this week. Then. Monday?? Maybe very wet, maybe ermm... White in places. Will keep a very close eye on that one.

hopenglory Tue 27-Nov-12 22:27:58

Excellent - good news for those of us who sell logs

rubs hands with glee

Earthymama Tue 27-Nov-12 22:32:38

Can people please keep an eye on the weather in Skegness at the weekend?

I am going to Butlins to British Folk Festival and I need to know what to wear and if I will get back home!!

oldsilver Tue 27-Nov-12 22:37:17

Weather man on Points West said there was the possibility of snow round these parts next week.

Yay - I can defrost my freezer before Christmas, it's getting really desperate now. Boo, my joints are playing up and I get scared trying to get around on slipperyness.

GloriaSmud Wed 28-Nov-12 06:29:33

We might have to brush off our rulers for measuring snow depth and buy emergency supplies of hot chocolate and squirty cream (like last year/last time we had snow!)

Aargh, just lost the post I was tryopomg and Internet playing up.

Will try to keep an eye on Skegness. At the moment I'd say that wintry showers are quite likely. Certainly going to be cold. Wrap up warm!

Freezing fog could be a nasty issue this weekend. Will try and catch up with the details of that this afternoon.

mumat39 Wed 28-Nov-12 18:14:01

Oldsilver, these are brilliant. I have a couple of pairs which I need to dig out. They really do make a difference. You can also get similar ones on amazon, and I noticed some were on prime so you could get them before the week is out.

Helenagrace Wed 28-Nov-12 19:05:21

OYBBK what do you think the chance of snow in West Sussex for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week? I'm moving from Lancashire on Monday and the removal team are delivering our stuff on Tuesday & Wednesday.

I trust you more than the Met Office grin

Well Monday now looks wet and quite mild in the south! Positively disgusting day. (That Has to change, else I'll be very cross as I've something going on myself). Tuesday, you could catch some showers,, but cooling down. Wednesday similar.

In fact, GFS has things a fair bit warmer next week, unsettled and perhaps very wet indeed on Thursday. Bastard weather. Scotland looks more wintry and could have quite a snowy time of it in hilly areas.

Stupid models. Stupid weather.

And when I say mild I don't mean comfortably mild but single digit raw wet yuk.
Colder the further north you go, so sleet into the mix further north and then maybe snow even further north. Not going to attempt details, cos that would be impossible at this stage.

boo to 'mild' raw yuck

BelleDameSousMistletoe Wed 28-Nov-12 22:33:55

I'm in Edinburgh this evening, drove up from Yorkshire today. It went down to freezing earlier on. V cold here. Wind is icy.

Interesting on drive up was snow on top of hills in Lake District but none here that I can see. Hoping it stays dry for journey home tomorrow. And, sorry, but hoping there is no snow next week either. Brrrrrrrr.

oldsilver Wed 28-Nov-12 22:41:13

Thanks mumat you just reminded me I do have some of those hidden at the back to the cupboard somewhere smile

gruber Thu 29-Nov-12 10:24:40

It has cooled down significantly down south (south coast). Definite change now the wind's backed to the NW/NE/wherever. Cold nights & mornings but no frosts yet. Single digits in the day.

Complete absence of rain now, hurrah! We have had enough. I don't think we'll be first in line for any wintry showers though, too warm usually on the coast - but we shall see. Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out!

Ooohhh! <squeals in infantile excitement>

it was v cold this morning. The floods were frozen at the edges.

AnAirOfHopeForSnow Thu 29-Nov-12 14:31:27

South yorks

Its soooo cold here. It was 4c at 6pm last night the amber snowflake came on in the car as a warning shock

Bitter cold today in Tameside. It was outdoor PE today, and half the kids did not have a proper outdoor kit, even though they are on the MUST HAVE list.

Lots of bare legs running around the pitches. <shiver>

GloriaSmud Thu 29-Nov-12 17:02:32

We're down to 1.7C already ~ 'tis going to be a cold night and there are metoffice warnings for ice that say so too!

I'm in Surrey, and the sky is absolutely filled with birds migrating south. Can't say I blame them! It's really chilly, 1*c when we walked the dog at 8 this morning

thekidsrule Thu 29-Nov-12 20:06:56

what is GFS ?

thanks

Here is the Wikipedia page on GFS

thekidsrule Thu 29-Nov-12 20:58:47

thank you

It's a model that I tend to use partly because there is so much freely available in the public domain. It runs 4 times a day and looks at the medium term.
You'll find that a lot of the weather sites that people quote here use it - especially the ones where you input your postcode and it comes up with a forecast (sometimes these websites dont have any human input added into the forecast which means that sometimes ridiculous snow fall levels and temps are quoted)

redlac Thu 29-Nov-12 22:10:59

It was -4 overnight here last night and ffffffreezing all day today barely rising above 1

nannyof3 Thu 29-Nov-12 22:13:19

Yep.. On Monday in London , and its my birthday and im going to winter wonderland in hyde park.. Cant wait

Nanny, it might be a bit damp on Monday, so pack a waterproof. I'm sure you will have a lovely time though smile

We are at -4c this am. Can hear lots of scraping of cars!

AnAirOfHopeForSnow Fri 30-Nov-12 08:34:47

-3 in South yorks at 7am today.

Where is the snow?

More importantly do i buy snowboots now or wait till Jan? If i buy them now i bet it will not snow till next year.

That's like asking where's the rain grin you need precipitating clouds too!

I would buy snow boots, as I think that snow is looking possible round your neck of the woods towards the end of the week.

I wish the models would settle down though, they are all over the place! South is looking pretty mild for at least the start of the week.

I can report a small flurry of snow here in west Lothian! And it is so so cold! <puts on extra vest and socks>

Some snow tonight in SE Scotland and again sun night smile wintry showers overnight and tomorrow morning running down parts of the north east perhaps into Lincolnshire.

Ooh glaikit, a bit of a x-post there! How exciting!

LadyFlumpalot Fri 30-Nov-12 08:54:10

My iPhone dooby flip says its sunny here, but it really isn't. Purple-y grey clouds and frost still on the ground... Kitten is it about to snow in Dorset?!?

Not really! I have to take ds to Aberdeen today and pick him up again on Sunday! Any chance he might get snowed in up there?? <looking forward to peace and quiet>

Aargh, why does it lose my posts when I switch tabs. Grrrr.
Ladyflumpalot, there's a rain blob heading towards you from the north that may turn sleety.

Glaikit, sadly no.

BelleDameSousMistletoe Fri 30-Nov-12 11:36:00

Hah! I missed the Scottish snow. Yay!

V v v cold and icy in West Yorkshire (edge of Pennines today). Still freezing, I think.

Apparentlychilled Fri 30-Nov-12 11:39:43

Belle- I'm with you. I also live on an ungritted hill in Yorkshire and am praying there's no snow.

Apparentlychilled Fri 30-Nov-12 11:43:16

Below freezing here, Belle- about minus 3 so far (W Yorkshire/N Yorks). Is it too early to say roll on spring?!

GloriaSmud Fri 30-Nov-12 12:53:01

We have a Level 3 cold weather alert for some areas, issued by the metoffice.

AnAirOfHopeForSnow Fri 30-Nov-12 13:32:39

I have the rainwatch app on my phone and at 3pm it goes a funny blue colour. Could this be snow? Its frezing out.

BelleDameSousMistletoe Fri 30-Nov-12 14:31:04

Apparently - has it warmed up for you yet? It's a little warmer here now.

Still brrrrrrrrr though!

AnAirOfHopeForSnow Fri 30-Nov-12 14:56:09

Still so cold here sad

Depends where you are air smile is it snowing??

AnAirOfHopeForSnow Fri 30-Nov-12 16:02:29

Not snowing yet but its frosty/ground frost. The grass has pretty white stuff on it.

Im in South Yorkshire.

Freezing here all day, and now its getting foggy. I'm worried about DH driving home on the M61) from Chorley.

GloriaSmud Fri 30-Nov-12 21:09:36

Fog started forming here about 2.30pm and the temp dropped to 0C ~ fair to say school run was a bit nippy! We're now down to -3.3!

Freezing fog is a nasty thing sad

BirdyBedtime Fri 30-Nov-12 21:54:47

It's snowing in East Lothian. DC's will be so annoyed they missed it if it's gone by morning.

Labradorlover Fri 30-Nov-12 22:31:55

Though there must be snow around on higher ground or further inland than me ( Edinburgh ).....warmed up to 2.4C and then proper rain for 2 hours this evening.

Mirage Sat 01-Dec-12 00:23:21

I've just walked home from the pub and the roof of the house is solid white with frost. Our silly old pony is out in it as she won't come in.sad She has a very thick rug on and a very hairy thick winter coat, but I still fret about her.

LadyFlumpalot Sat 01-Dec-12 07:41:02

Tis freezing and foggy down in the South West. Hoarfrost on all the branches.

Wallace Sat 01-Dec-12 07:56:34

snow here in the Highlands.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 11:45:50

How much Wallace?

Beautiful day here after a freezing fog start.

We had rain about 6am and now its a beautiful sunny day, nowhere near as cold as yesterday was.

My DMum reports a skiffing <technical> of snow in Aberdeen. Nothing more here in west Lothian! But clear skies and very cold!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 11:59:25

snow warnings!!!!! for tomorrow And Monday.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 11:59:37

snow warnings!!!!! for tomorrow And Monday.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 11:59:56

Oops, sorry, mn went offline for a mo.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 12:03:19

Looks like its a marginal situation with a weather front moving eastwards bringing rain for most but snow for some, most likely in the north of Scotland, but perhaps northern England too.

You can see the surface pressure charts to give you an idea of timing.

fatsatsuma Sat 01-Dec-12 12:10:11

OYBBK,, there's an article in the Telegraph today saying that the Met Office are expecting a 'sudden stratospheric warming' (SWW) to start within the next week, which will apparently cause a blocked weather system over the UK and bring low temperatures for the rest of the year. You probably know all this anyway, but apparently it's a similiar set-up to the winter of 2010, but the METO have new technology which wasn't available then, which is why that winter was such a shock to everyone.

I know not everyone likes very cold weather, but I'm grin at the prospect of proper chilly conditions over Christmas, even if it doesn't bring snow. Mild, damp weather at Christmas just doesn't feel right somehow!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 12:24:15

That'll be what they are basing their 3 month prediction on then. Their models are suggesting a colder than average winter but they aren't getting a clear signal about the amount of precipitation.

There's a SSW watch thread here that I've not seen before!

Wallace Sat 01-Dec-12 12:28:02

Just a skiff really smile

GlaikitFizzogTheChristmasElf Sat 01-Dec-12 12:42:35

Skiff is a great word!

HenriettaTurkey Sat 01-Dec-12 12:53:47

S/W Yorkshire border here. Middle of the pennines. Blue sky, sun, no snow. 1 degree.

It was seriously freezing with frost on tops of the cars last night (or, this morning haha) and crunchy grass at 10.....last Sunday I was wearing a bloody t shirt outside!!

I would love it to snow. Free bus here or a v. short pretty walk to where I need to be. Boots and winter coat. Yay. SE here smile

DH and DS are freezing at the Ethiad at the moment -- it's not as cold as yesterday (yet) but still cold enough to make them wonder whether it was actually worth going when they only got a draw!

Just ice for London. Oh, I want snow.

LineRunner Sat 01-Dec-12 17:45:47

Ice Ice Baby smile

STOP.

MildredIsMyAlterEgo Sat 01-Dec-12 19:48:54

No snow here in SE Poland either. Good job as I'm travelling back to the UK tomorrow and I don't want any disruption ta v much smile

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Sat 01-Dec-12 20:34:50

Both my weather apps said snow here in north Essex today, and one of them is the met office! It was stunning at sunrise, frozen hard and beautiful pink skies, then it bloody rained! Hard! The damp went righ through me, I was frozen! sad

digerd Sat 01-Dec-12 20:51:17

I noticed a layer of white on the ground a few hours ago when dark, but temp outside was 1.8, so unlikely to be frost, so assumed it had snowed lightly. Am in the Thames Valley area

Let's have some love for snow in the shape of a genius smile

digerd Sat 01-Dec-12 21:00:00

Have an aversion to "precipitation" especially when frozen, as is so dangerous walking on pavements that are not cleared by council, and for cars on roads the council don't treat either.
Must admit though, when I woke up in 2010 and the roof of house was covered in a thick layer of snow, it was so much warmer inside ??!!

BaconAndAvocado Sat 01-Dec-12 21:02:29

Bring back La Bush sad

Mandy2003 Sat 01-Dec-12 21:56:07

I had a real Dr Who moment earlier - "Its not snow, its ash!"

Opened the front door and saw these little flakes coming down, then smelled a bonifire from the allotment next door. Phew blush

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 22:05:24

I'm starting to watch the models get close to Christmas. GFS goes to 17 th December ( which is utter fantasy island in forecasting terms) for midday it was widespread temps of -3 and snow in the south.
Fun to look at but boy would it be a pain if it actually happened!

Oh I want that.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sat 01-Dec-12 22:51:39

Discussion of the day.
It had better do some snowing somewhere then!

AnAirOfHopeForSnow Sat 01-Dec-12 23:52:16

No snow here in South Yorkshire but still really cold -3 outside. The funny blue colour on the rainwatching app is frost/ice but not snow yet.

LineRunner Sun 02-Dec-12 00:14:58

Freezing here.

Hot water bottles out. Shepherd's delight. smile

Francesa Sun 02-Dec-12 08:14:17

Freezing here too, but no snow, well not yet anyway!

AWeeBitConfused Sun 02-Dec-12 08:19:45

I'm in the highlands and we have snow. We even took the dc sledging yesterday smile

ajandjjmum Sun 02-Dec-12 08:31:19

Kitten
I think you need to apply for leave from work for the next few weeks - we all need your guidance (again), especially if there is any chance of a repeat of 2010! grin

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 08:47:07

grin That would be good!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 08:54:49

Snow up north could be an issue tonight, most likely for Scotland, perhaps as far south as Middlesbrough. But for many areas away from hills this will turn increasingly to rain as Monday starts. Further south much milder than today and rain will go through overnight and through the morning.

After that turning colder again with perhaps quite widespread wintry showers on Tuesday before becoming drier for many on Wednesday. Looks like staying dry in the south for a couple of days, but further north may possibly need to keep an eye on Thursday.

GloriaSmud Sun 02-Dec-12 09:02:54

-3.7C here atm but it's been down to -4.1 this morning. I've been wondering why the temperature goes down, just before the sun rises and found this answer!

-3.5 here in chilly Tameside.

Everything is covered with a thick layer of feathery frost. Very pretty to look at, but freezing.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 09:08:47

I've noticed that its often coldest after dawn but always assumed that the early solar input isn't enough to counteract the continuing radiation of heat from the ground. But looking at this mornings graph it does indeed begin to rise before dawn and then drops sharply again. If I. Get time at some point I may plot a few other cold nights and see if there is a similar trend. Certainly going to watch for that from now on!

GloriaSmud Sun 02-Dec-12 09:18:50

I found this as well but it's a bit scientific for me at this time of the morning!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 09:25:12

That corresponds to my thoughts Gloria. The first answer you looked at didnt make sense when I looked at windspeed v temperature change. There were higher winds before dawn several times and no corresponding drop in temperature when the wind speed picked up, meaning that a mix of air layers was unlikely to be the answer.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 09:31:02

I need to look into this more because the question to ask for me looking at todays data isnt really' why is the temp lowest a little after dawn?' but 'why did the temp rise a little in the hour before dawn before then dropping again?'

I need to read that page properly and probably some others and look at other frosty nights' data but I'm supposed to be leaving the house in 20 minutes and I'm still in my pjs!

GloriaSmud Sun 02-Dec-12 09:40:49

I think I managed to connect that the 2nd one was more what you thought, OYBBK ~ seems obvious really that a temperature drop is down to something more than just something as simple as wind/air being mixed up!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 12:19:47

will post a snow warning thread!!!!

In the Highlands - very cold here, it's been snowing over night (about an inch or so), but none so far today. Gorgeous sun-shine!

I've got a feeling the roads are going to get blocked off though, and we'll be stuck!! Must go do my Asda order!!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 12:24:54

snow warning thread . I hate spawning threads from threads as it gets all confusing! but sometimes its better to have specific thread titles.

MerryLindor Sun 02-Dec-12 13:41:18

Anyone know about grit / salt - is there a particular brand I shoudl get that is better? We have a small dog and am wondering if there is a particular dog friendly type?

MegGriffin Sun 02-Dec-12 14:32:01

I want some! <stamps foot>

MrsAmaretto Sun 02-Dec-12 17:01:59

It was snowing here today smile but not enough to sledge in.i do live in the northern isles though!

alistron1 Sun 02-Dec-12 17:02:01

Kitten - the hour after dawn is always the coldest - I can't remember why (there is a scientific reason for it!) but it's always interesting in the winter to track it.

NotWankinginaWinterWonderland Sun 02-Dec-12 17:56:42

I'm in Scotland I have yellow warnings and NO SNOW angry It's too cold to snow

we have no snow, but then again we never seem to get snow (merseyside)

mute Sun 02-Dec-12 18:13:03

Rock salt is best but can get in their paws. So probably best use white salt.

pmTea Sun 02-Dec-12 18:22:21

no- nothing until Christmas Eve please.

Chottie Sun 02-Dec-12 18:28:37

Late Christmas Eve snow please! just a sprinkling to add to the Christmas magic and then melt and disappear on Christmas Day in time for everyone who is on the move to arrive safely.

mute Sun 02-Dec-12 18:31:41

I'm a snow driver in the highlands. We will be out all night on the trunks roads as we are expecting a big dump. It doesn't get too cold to snow by the way I've seen it snow in minus teens.

NotWankinginaWinterWonderland Sun 02-Dec-12 18:49:47

Where is my snow please? All my warnings are in place, I have dc ask if me path needs erm.. un-snowed and I have no snow grin

Snow in Aberdeenshire, A96 very slippy in places according to friend who has just driven to Aberdeen. Not happy as have plans tomorrow which involve driving on that road (as well as others in deepest darkest Aberdeenshire) and the forecast says heavy snow in Huntly around 10am tomorrow... may have to rearrange my plans, as feeling very risk-averse at 6 and a bit months pregnant. sad I hate snow when I have places to be/work to go to.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 21:30:03

Mute, very true, after all the arctic has plenty of snow!
Notwanking, depends where you are in the warning area. Further south and you may be out of luck or maybe the precip hasn't arrived yet?

youngermother1 Sun 02-Dec-12 21:42:04

The myth about being too cold to snow comes about because clear winter nights are colder than under cloud cover and it obviously needs clouds to snow. In reality, never too cold for snow.

GlaikitFizzogTheChristmasElf Sun 02-Dec-12 21:49:03

I remember being utterly confused when my geography teacher told us 1) the arctic tundra has less rain than the Sahara and 2) it snows in the Sahara <boggle>

I love weather!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Sun 02-Dec-12 21:58:08

And linked in with that youngermother it's often high pressures which give us our coldest temps which tend not to have precipitating clouds.

flyinmytea Sun 02-Dec-12 23:17:21

It' been snowing here for a while. North of Glasgow. Sigh, just in time for Monday morning. Oh Joy.

MerryLindor Sun 02-Dec-12 23:34:14

Thanks, Mute. Will have a look tomorrow.

I'm in West Fife - been snowing fit to burst for the last half hour. sad

CuriousMama Mon 03-Dec-12 01:34:09

Snow has laid here, I'm on the Durham coast. DC2 is over the moon. The dog will be too in the morning. DS1, Dp and I not so excited.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Mon 03-Dec-12 07:40:00

After today's bout there may be a few snow showers around in the north tomorrow. Then Thursday looks like the next proper batch, once again for the north east -mostly Scotland, but perhaps some northern areas of England.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Mon 03-Dec-12 07:42:10

And watch out for Thursday night into Friday. GFS are showing a bit of a snow fest right down to central England. Met office don't seem to be going for this solution, but the potential is there.......

ThePoppyAndTheIvy Mon 03-Dec-12 12:08:47

BBC website is currently forecasting snow here for Wednesday - Staffordshire sad.

JustFabulous Mon 03-Dec-12 13:34:32

I'm in Kent and 2 of my kids break up next week so it can snow after that a bit but not properly until my 3rd breaks up, if you can arrange that grin.

MyMamaToldMe Mon 03-Dec-12 15:01:27

I'm in Kent too, and if it can be arranged for it to start on the 22nd, that would suit me fine! smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Mon 03-Dec-12 20:33:04

Just came on to say that GFS shows a chance of snow for the SE and east Anglia for Wednesday morning!

Coconutty Mon 03-Dec-12 20:35:03

Ooh, we've got snow forecast for Wednesday too, very light though and then followed by sleet.

JustFabulous Mon 03-Dec-12 20:36:25

Eek!!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Mon 03-Dec-12 20:54:21

A chance means quite probably not! But maybe.......

MegGriffin Mon 03-Dec-12 21:36:02

crosses fingers, legs, eyes, toes for snow in SE.

oh please, please pleeeeeeeease.... .* backs up meg *

MrsChristmasVamos Mon 03-Dec-12 21:58:37

I'll back up Meg and Glitter. But I only want a bit now...enough to cover naicely but then melt without the slush bit.

I have shopping to finish ! grin

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 18:11:06

Potential is still there for a bit tomorrow.

No sign of warming up at all in the next couple of weeks (maybe the far south will blip up to around 8c sometimes) with some very teasing charts.

GlaikitFizzogTheChristmasElf Tue 04-Dec-12 18:12:59

Snowing here again and it's sitting on the frozen slush from yesterday! Poor ds has never walked on ice before he was just like bambi!

iseenodust Tue 04-Dec-12 18:14:38

DS is desperate for some snow. His friend who is coming to tea next week has just told me he's bringing his sledge. hmm

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 18:28:57

Aww glaikit smile

Iseennodust, you never know, there is a chance.......

I waaaaant snow!

DiamondDoris Tue 04-Dec-12 19:02:59

This link (if it works) shows maps for the week and the pink bits show snow: http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-bin/expertcharts?LANG=en&MENU=0000000000&CONT=ukuk&MODELL=gfs&MODELLTYP=1&BASE=-&VAR=weas&HH=61&PANEL=1&ZOOM=1&ARCHIV=0&RES=0&WMO= I hope it doesn't snow much, a bit I can take. I'm in the SE but it doesn't show snow here til Friday. Local weather says tomorrow.

DiamondDoris Tue 04-Dec-12 19:03:28

Aagh, didn't work. Google "weatheronline".

NotWankinginaWinterWonderland Tue 04-Dec-12 19:33:36

I have snow, big fluffy snow, I am now big fluffy soaking wet

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 20:28:09

online was it those charts?
Remember that is only the GFS output, which is just one model (though one I look at a lot) it also has no human input to it, its a pure computer model without any common sense or experience, which means that sometimes it produces nonsense.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 20:29:04

That should have said weatheronline!

DiamondDoris Tue 04-Dec-12 20:49:57

Yes - it seems to contradict the BBC South East's version - for snow early tomorrow, their's say Friday. It'll be interesting to see who or what is right.

I've had my monthly look on Metcheck - another pure computer model forecast (I think).

According to that it's going to snow here from Thursday the 12th, through to the 19th. with a bit of sleet thrown in on the Thursday/Friday the 12th/13th. grin

Thursday the 13th, Friday the 15th......

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 21:03:36

Well bbc weather is a law unto itself! grin

Potential is there for tomorrow, I think Fridays potential is more central and northern England. Just had a quick look at the charts for Friday, wouldn't be surprised to see some met office warnings if things haven't changed by tomorrow.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 21:04:35

Metcheck uses exactly the same output as the weatheronline charts.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 04-Dec-12 21:06:14

updated warnings going up to Thursday.

I thought so, thanks OYBBK.

Cold and wet here tonight!
