Spell of very windy weather coming up in the south.

Tricky to forecast at the moment because it's quite a complex situation.

First deep low crosses the uk somewhere through the south on Saturday/Sunday night. At the moment, I'd say the strongest winds look to be along the south coast - perhaps gusting up to 60-70mph. A lot of rain too.

Theres nothing remarkable with this system showing, but because it's the first storm of the season it might catch people a bit unaware. I'd expect the met office to be issuing some warnings by lunchtime today.

Tomorrow would be a good day to tidy the garden of loose objects in the south!

Then the models have a wobble, theyve been playing with different scenarios of low pressures coming through, but nothing consistent yet.

Oooh, I was looking at forecasts yesterday, to figure out tomorrow (bringing Cubs outdoors) and Sunday (DD wants to do the races in sailing) - and it looked cold (3 degrees by day) but quite calm.

Must have another look and see if there will be anything in our direction (opposite Anglesea).

warnings are out for the weekend now.

www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1479600000 going for a se track. Not too severe, but perhaps in those areas not a good day to sail Grin

I was lying in bed last night, cursing myself for yet another year when I haven't had the roof looked at and here we are, winter all over again.

Time to tie the trampoline down for the winter

I think if you are along the coast from the IOW eastwards, it could be a little more on the interesting side. Models have it running deeper and its modelled to deepen quickly.

Could bring in some snow to the northern side of it over hills too.

Wish we had waterproofed our garage roof while we could Confused

Is this the StormAngus thread?

Barometric Pressure - when that drops, is that indicating a low is on it's way? So if I am looking at pressure data and at 6am it says 1005 hPa and at 11am it is 996 hPA, then is that indicating that the low is approaching?
What hPA figure would be considered clear sky and what would be the storm?
Any good sites for explaining about Atmospheric/Barometric pressure?

Posted this earlier but not appeared so may be repeating myself ... am due to be at an open air art market in Winchester tomorrow, but looks like a washout, for the second month running . Being a few miles inland from coast may miss worst of the gales , but I may just opt for a lie in !

nanynick - you can't correlate barometer readings with clear skies, after all it is under high pressure that fog forms.
This is a storm angus thread though :)

amber warnings out now - coastal areas east of the IOW could see gusts of 80mph

Does look as though it will be rather wild and very wet in Winchester Im afraid.

Oh, I think I see what you are asking nannynick. It's a bit like putting a heavy weight on a mattress really and looking at where the dent/storm begins and ends. Once it starts to drop, that's the influence of the storm, but it doesn't have a defined edge iyswim.

Think I understand. Is it that as the storm approaches it influences the pressure around it so the drop in the reading is an indicator that the storm may come but it may go a different way.

no, all a storm is, is a circulating area that has a steep pressure gradient from high to low. So the drop in pressure that you can see is the outer edge of the storm. It's just a souped up area of low pressure.

There's quite a good OU module - understanding the weather. You could probably get the course book secondhand online for pretty cheap.

nice imagery Gloria.
I'm in a yellow warning area, not expecting anything too bad here, but I've weighted my compost bin lids down. Possibility of a sting jet forming in this storm further south which can bring severe gusts.

That would be nice!

(I'm not counting on actually lying in, but not having to chivvy to leave on time is a bonus in itself)

I think they might have bought the warnings forward looking at the met office page. I think this is potentially looking rather nasty for some now, it's looking deeper and perhaps forming a sting jet.

It's been storming and howling for a good forty five minutes here - Dorset coast again. I hope that trampoline's good and locked down Shock.
