I am a bit skint this year and have decided to give my DS a weather monitoring kit for the garden as part of his haul from Father Christmas. So far this kit consists of a garden thermometer, so I thought I'd ask you lot for suggestions.

He likes numbers and stuff so I thought about adding a diary, pencil but I am now a bit stumped. Any ideas? Thank you!

Can you find a nice website that has instructions for making your own rain gauge - and then either print it out, or tart it up and personalise it on Publisher?

A simple rain gauge use a plastic lemonade bottle (1, 1.5, 2 litre). You slice the top off at about 1/3 of the way down and then invert it into the rest of the bottle. The rain falls in, but you get limited evaporation through the spout.

How about presenting his observations in scrap book, where he can stick photos, observations about birds and flower emergence, weather stories from the newspaper, as well as his raw data. He's a bit young for graphs, but perhaps you could help him with this using graphing software or graph paper.

Perfect, thank you. I will add a scrapbook, great idea as he loves gardening too. Strangely, he spotted a graph last week and is now quite obsessed with plotting so I might weave that in too.
