You could try some prune juice - soak prunes in water overnight, give him some of the juice. As far as I know, no reason to avoid prunes...

Do you know bananas are very constipating (annoyingly, given that they are standard first food fare)

fruit puree - anything like apple, pear, apricot, peach, strawberry (ok not seasonal atm but can be bought)
baby porridge at b/fast

they all go through this as their tummies need a while to adjust. make sure he drinks enough, cool boiled water etc. as well as milk.

mmmm that could well be the problem, he loves banana and I let him eat quite a lot yesterday, whoops!!

When do you give then water?

BTW if you are desperate then try fresh/pure orange juice, a teaspoonful or medicine syringe of it is likely to be enough to get things going.

Yes, I didn't know about it, until someone on here told me after dd ate a whole one
You could try water with meals...

My DD has had a hard time with grains. I no longer give her rice, but I've been giving her millet (ground) for breakfast (with prunes!) and that seems OK. Carrots also seem to do her no good.

also avocado is good.

We've struggled with constipation for the last three months, and only now am I beginning to manage it. If she has something like carrots, though, it sets her back. She's never had a banana in her life, poor thing.

I found, when DS got constipated during the first few weeks of solids, the easiest way to relieve it was to decrease his solids & concentrate on his milk a little more.

We are about a month into weaning and having the same trouble for the last two weeks or so.

Babyrice is gone (he is 6 months anyway so no need) but so is rice based baby breakfast cereal too and no banana anymore.

I am trying to get him to drink lots of water, but he only takes an oz or two from a beaker.

This morning he had a pineapple and passion fruit smoothie for breakfast!

I am hoping for some action now today. Its such an issue that my 3 year old has taken to going around saying DS2 is "struggling with his poo"! We are obviously all talking about it too much!!

Apple can be really constipating. It's the pectin, apparently - same thing that sets jam...We have similar conversations in our house: DD1, "dd2 is bit bunged up"...Annoying because rules out almost all fruit pots.

Prune/apricot puree is really good for constipation and absolutely delicious. You can give a little spread on bread as a finger food or a teaspoonful stirred into yoghurt or porridge or something. You just soak and simmer some dried prunes and apricots in a tiny bit of water and puree them really thoroughly. It's really nice and sticky and sweet and all babies I've know have loved it.
