Want to start BLW this weekend but feeling chicken - anyone want to hold my hand?

Ds will be 26 weeks on Friday (hurrah!) and I've been wanting to try BLW, but feeling nervous, mainly coz I don't know anyone who's tried it, and the mums I usually get support from have never even heard of it! (plus I am just a worry-wart!)

I sorta had an aborted go last weekend, feeling pushed by HV - ds got some mashed sweet potato on Saturday (he was indifferent to the sweet potato, but my god he loved that spoon) and he grabbed my banana and shoved it in his gob on Sunday. But his little face looked so worried, and I really don't know how we're going to fit his mealtimes in with ours, and I feel even less sure about how to start the whole process off...

So, anyone else about to start BLW? Let's do it together! [hopeful emoticon]

An afterthought, its not the best way forward IMO for a worrywart, you need to be be quite hard and sure this is right for you because they MIGHT gag, and people MIGHT try to put you off. Neither thing happened to me, so it might not to you, but be prepared.

Aitch's forum (click on link to the left) has lots of people recently started or about to start, so many hands to hold yours there. Have to say I LOVE it - it is so much fun, forces you to relax about how much they're eating, and about mess, etc, and you get to share meals in such a lovely social way. Have fun.

PS Aitch - I do believe I should be on commission today.

no need to worry about his meals fitting in with yours. you just pass bits over when you eat. don't even think of it as meals at first. all he'll be doing for the first few times is feeling the food, squashing it a bit and maybe tasting some.

I tried to register for Aitch's forum but something's gone wrong; I emailed her but haven't heard back.

I'm starting friday too! I've done some roasted chunks of butternut squash & sweet potato which are in the freezer waiting. Had a trial run last week as he was acting hungry after breast feeds with some pear & he was biting bits off, chewing & swallowing.

Am quite excited as did the puree thing with dd and this seems to make far more sense. Plus am hoping he might BF a bit less .

ah, thanks that helps

we don't have a high-chair (nor any sort of a dining table for that matter), he's just been sitting in my lap. And will do until we can sort something out (another worry on my list). Will try him again today with some banana and broccoli...

don't spose you know whether any of the other April '07ers are doing it?

okay aitch I've tried again.

oh, and guess whose baby nabbed a bit of broccoli and sucked it to bits at lunch today? He would've had my sandwich too but I didn't think he was ready for smoked ham and cheese on granary bread...

Hoping to do BLW when DS is 6 months v soon. But would like to ask how do babies chew food without teeth?

Excuse me if the answer is obvious and I am being thick!

why do they have teething rings marked as 4 months plus?
they've got teeth, they're just in the gum.
here, have a look at this

Hi phdlife! We're hoping to start on Saturday too - exciting huh?! Am also nervous about the whole thing (dd born April 15th so she's ready). How is it going?? Any eating today?

Can I ask what you reckon about drinking? Do you offer them water in a baby/training cup from this point? How much? (Don't want to put her off milk) God - it's a minefield....

Thought we'd try a bit of mash and fingerfoods and hopefully ease off the mash after a short while (basically as am a little bit lazy and amd really hoping BLW works!).

So - how goes it??

you're so funny, gerb, just hand over the damned steamed carrot!
re the water, dd was always better with a shot glass with a cm of water in it at the beginning, it took her a while to get the hang of sippy cups. the upside is that she learned how to use an open cup really quickly.
dd didn't really drink a lot of water in the beginning... i'm wondering if it was because a bit of broccoli is mostly water anyway, whereas a few years back you'd have been starting off with rice and cereals which are more 'absorby', iykwim? could be...

Hi everyone - I have started dd on BLW from last Saturday and its going ok - lots of gagging though which is a bit frightening, I may be losing my nerve a bit! Although I suppose even if you wean them on puree to start with they eventually have to handle lumps anyway. So far she has had pear, banana, carrot, red pepper and green beans (although with the beans just bit a lump off, grimaced and spat it out - may have been a little too "al dente"!). Good luck everyone, we will have to keep in touch to see how our lo's are getting on!

EvangelinesMum · 09/10/2007 14:30

Oooh, also meant to say dd seems to do better drinking from a sippy cup without the lid. She is bf so perhaps its easier for her this way?

Report
gerbo · 09/10/2007 14:56

Could be, Evangeline's mum - when we couldn't get bf going in the beginning when she was only a week or so old, she sipped up milk from a little cup thingy really well so think they're actually better at drinking from cups than pepole think.

Aitch - you just made me chuckle! You'll be relieved/happy to hear I just handed over some nana and she took a large bit (gulp!!!) which was a little unnerving yet weirdly exhilarating! She just mushed it in her hands first, then watched me take a bite (saying 'yum' in a theatrical voice) and copied! So cool - this is going to be exciting, methinks.

DS is having carrot and brocolli again tonight - think we might have to give him something else or he'll get bored
