How to introduce a training cup?/????

My baby is 7 mths old and the last couple of weeks I have been placing a training cup (with a spoon) near by at feed time to get use to it. Babs never picks it up and when I place it in his mouth I can see him desperately sucking on it and getting annoyed when it just dripples down his chin. Any suggestions on how to help him?

I'm a bit confused as to what he is to do with the spoon, in relation to the cup? Anyway, I tried dd with a sippy cup for a bit, but since she always shows interest in my cup, she now (9months) just drinks from an ordinary open cup. It is still a bit messy but it's only been a month or so - and I do think it's much easier (supposed to be good for dental/ jaw devt too).

What6's the spoon for???

Just hand the cup over with something tasty in, he'll get the hang of it.

Sorry shouldn't have mentioned the spoon...i was thinking generally about feed time. I have a soft tip bottle that I am using. I'm not sure whther to go down the root of trying lot of different ones or just let baby get to wanting to try a cup by himself?

My DS (7mo) got very annoyed by cup with a spout on it, so now I just give him an open cup with water in it. I hold it to his mouth and he will happily slurp away before wrestling it away from me and throwing water all over himself, me, the kitchen... I'm sure he'll get better at this bit, though!

Are you using one of those cups with a spout like a cross between a bottle and cup? We tried one of those and DS could never get anything out because you have to suck really hard. We got a Tommee Tippee cup with spout (about £3 from Tesco) and it took DS a while to pick it up himself (we held it for him until he was about 9 or 10 months) but now he drinks out of it no problems - the liquid comes out quite easily so he doesn't have to suck too hard. He can now finish a whole cup of milk in about 0.002 seconds (seems like!)

I note you are all talking about babies slightly older than mine so maybe I need to wait a little longer? I am presently using the tommee tippee spout lid bottle.
