I've been meaning to ask this - is pesto OK? I'm thinking of the pine nut angle. Or is it just peanuts that you have to beware of?

pesto is packed full of salt and is a definite no-no for the under 2's.

Be very, very wary of any adult processed food as it will invatiabley contain waay too much salt for toddlers.

i've got to say that dd loves pesto and eats it a lot and always has done. i am wary of adult processed food, genereally speaking, but i use so little pesto that pound for pound i'm not too worried.

i've heard pita bread is good, and you can give houmous (or however you blardy spell it!) but ds has turned his nosse up at houmous and we've not tried pita yet...

we tried dd2 with some pieces of chicken tonight (which she sucked a little rather than ate but seemed to quite like).

My HV suggested waiting for a bit longer before introducing wheat - anyone else had this?

And does anyone else's baby start choking on their carrots?

Report

i used to steam the carrots to within an incho of their lives. raw, i think they're pretty chokeable tbh, once the baby gets good enough at eating to start breaking bits off.

I've been giving her carrots off my plate which are soft enough for her to break in two in her fists - maybe I still need to go softer? (had to pull a carrot out of her mouth the other day)

how old is she? maybe she's ready to ditch the chip-shaped and go for smaller bits? gill rapley makes a big deal of chip-shaped but in my experience once dd got the hang of it she preferred to exercise her pincer grip for a while. and also, was it choking choking, or a bad gag? did the baby go blue, for example? was there deadly silence? if not, best leave them to it, i say.

more like a bad gag by the sound of it. No blueness.

she's 6½ months and only just getting the hang of putting things to her mouth. She's very excited by it though; a couple of weeks ago she wasn't keen at all so we left it for a while.

Can I add:

Toasted fruit loaf with loads of butter
Adult ricecakes (Sainsburys do a low-salt version) with philadelphia spread on
Melba toast (my DS has it with jam on)
Breadsticks

just let them really cool down, putthat, the centre of a corn cob stays scaldingly hot for A Long Time.

This is a super tedious question re finger food but has been bugging me since I started weaning a few weeks ago.
If my DD is having cheese, steamed veg., pitta & fruit for her tea in a finger food stylee should I chuck the whole lot onto her tray & let her get stuck in or give her one piece at a time & wait till she has finished mucking about with it before offering another piece?
How mundane was that?? .
