BLW - when do you start on really messy food?

So far we have been mainly trying 'veggie chips' (broccoli, carrot etc. and stuffed pita bread - DD is almost 7 months old. She has a pretty good hand grip, but no pincer grip (can't remember when they get that.) This may be a stupid question, but does she need more of a pincer grip before tackling stuff like spag bol? Is it possible for them to mush stuff together like risotto?

I just tried different stuff with my lo but always had some veggie chips to go with it just in case, so bolegnese with steamed carrots, etc. It took a few attempts for him to realise about picking up lumps of food like mashed potato etc but once he did it started a whole new eating experience (and cleaning experience) I think mine was about 8months when he started tackling peas and sultanas.

My ds is going down this route. Any threads with food ideas you ladies can point me to?

the best place for recipes is www.babyledweaning.com (I think that is right) . If you don't get any joy from that address google "aitch" and "babyledweaning".

i think we did messy from about 8-ish months. just go for it. remember, it's not about the eating at this stage, it's about then having fun and tasting bits and bobs. so as long as you're feeding milk on demand then the baby's nutritional needs are being met, the rest is all kicks and thrills as far as i'm concerned.

Aitch (tis me chocolate under another name), just sent you an email..... sorry for the hijack folks.

I personally think the sooner the better, my DD was into proper lovely mess within a day and she loves it - mind you she does now need several baths a day - am currently seeking a size 6-9 month sou wester and one for me too!

We do naked lunch - spag bol is hilarious, DS ends up bright orange but he LOVES it. Proof!

It all sounds so much fun I think I'll give it a go tomorrow. Should amuse DS (3) if nothing else

Just a tip. Have the towel or large napkin ready to wipe hands and face before removing the child from the seat and plonking them in the bath, otherwise they like to rub bolognaise sauce in your hair!

I always do really messy stuff at tea time. Veggie meatballs (a la Aitch's blog) and tomato sauce tonight, then straight in the bath! Like the others, I would say just go for it.

i tried loads of bibs and things and found in the end that the best plan was as naked as possible with a muslin tied round her neck and sometimes a rubber scoop bib over the top. like the pp said it's easy to wipe their hands and face with the muslin before letting them out of the highchair.

I just give DD the same colour food as her outfit.

We're going to make fruit jelly tomorrow for a laugh and film her reaction.

first (lentil) bolognese and big pasta tubes today for dd2, and I've never seen mess like it.

It dyed her eyebrows a nice orange colour visible even after her bath!

don't worry it will wear off on her bedclothes tonight... did she enjoy it?

and senseiaitch because i have a mentee but we've decided not to go the whole bitch/fag thing and instead embrace a martial arts vibe.

I challenge you to a spag bol kata right here right now. Oh and I don't have a mentee but I am feeling a bit mental after the pigeon shenannigans.....

yep it was a big hit with her! Just as well as there is plenty more she can have.

Do you want more pictures for your website? I didn't take any today but have some 'action shots' from other days recently that have come out quite nicely.

So i do a lovely lamb mince and spinache lasagne. the dd's love it.
DS is nearly 9 months , with this BLW he can eat almost anything so lasagne would be fine?

Tell you what i am a total convert already, it's so much easier and ds seems so releived i've stopped offering mush!
