Cows milk at 10 months?

DS currently has a breastfeed first thing in the morning, again around 2:30-3 pm and then a bottle of formula at bedtime. I breastfeed him if he wakes in the night but he normally sleeps through. He eats really well (more than 3 yo DD) but isn't that fussed by milk. He's now pretty fussy when I try to feed him and only feeds for 5 mins max. I think we're done with breastfeeding which I'm fine with but could I swap to cows milk rather than formula? He's 1 at the beginning of March.

You could, is it his quick feeding that's making you want to stop?

I always thought we'd stop between 6-12 months. It's not so much that the feeds re quick, it's just that I'm not convinced he's getting much milk from me anymore. He doesn't seem that fussed by breastfeeding anymore and rarely looks for it.

Whether he feeds for 5 mins twice a day or 20 mins 10 times a day, he will be taking roughly 25 floz from you in 24 hours. So quick feeds aren't really an indication that he's not interested.

I've just mentioned that for anyone lurking who has a quick feeder and is worried. Smile

If you want to stop, it might be worth talking to a BFC on one of the Bfing Helplines. She can help you to come up with a plan that will help baby get used to the new quantities of milk and help to reduce your risk of mastitis.

Good Luck Smile

The advice is formula until one as cow's milk does not have the same nutritional value as boobie milk or formula.

You can go straight to giving formula in an open cup.

Thanks for the help. I've swapped the afternoon feed to formula and I'll continue the morning breastfeed for a few weeks.

Sounds like a good plan Smile

My DS was a large heavy baby from birth, on solids plus bf at 3 months. By 4 months he was on cows milk as he preferred solid food to bf or formula. He's a very healthy and slim adult.
Follow your instincts as to what is the right approach for your particular baby.
