Weaning

Quantity of food to give to 6 month old

I started weaning DS yesterday - he'll be six months next week. He's taken to it really well and has eaten everything we've given to him (baby rice, carrot and banana so far). I'm just not sure how much I should be giving him - he always seems to want more! I know all babies are different but as a rough idea how much should they be eating at 6 months and how quickly do you increase it? And when do you cut down on milk feeds?

At the minute he has four 8oz bottles of milk a day, plus now he has roughly five or six baby teaspoons or fruit/veg at lunchtime and three teaspoons of baby rice at teatime.

There's a really good book that I wish I could recommend as I found it has worked very very well for my DS. Every baby will vary but this sounds about right for the very start of weaning (is that 3 baby teaspoons of baby rice or three teaspoons of powder before it's mixed btw?) If it helps, within 3 or 4 weeks you should probably aim for around 5-6 tablespoons of veg puree and around 5-6 teaspoons of baby rice (before mixing) with a couple of tablespoons of fruit perhaps. Hope this helps.

Sorry, in answer to your second question, I'd be guided by your baby on the milk feeds. I started weaning my DS a bit earlier than your LO but he took ages before he cut down on his milk at all. I understand that around 21 oz is the recommended minimum once weaning has started. You could maybe cut some of the bottles down to 7 oz and see how you go?

Thanks thats really helpful - I have no idea - I've read so many books I've confused myself!

He currently has 3 baby teaspoons of baby rice after is mixed (about two teaspoons of powder). He can definitely eat more so was just worried about giving him too much, but now I know what we're roughly aiming for that helps. Thanks again.

my ds is just starting on solids, he is almost 6 months. He has 3 teaspoons (before mixed) of baby porrige with about 5 oz of milk at breakfast, 4-5 cubes of veg puree at 11.30 (which will soon become lunch time hopefully) 4ish oz milk at 2.30ish then 4-5 teaspoons (before mixed) of rice with 2 cubes of fruit pureemixed in with 4 oz milk, then a dreamfeed of about 4-5 oz milk at 10.45pm. but trying to drop this asap.

My nearly 6 month old is having 4 x 8oz bottles spread throughout the day, baby porridge or rice pudding for breaky, savoury/veg solids and a fruit desert for afternoon lunch, then 1rusk with milk for supper. He managed to eat a whole banana mashed the other day?
I think it depends on the individual baby, after few weeks up the amount a little and see how it goes. I found my ds isnt finishing his 8oz bottles as I've upped his solids. It is sooo confusing though getting into a routine as a 1st time mom who has no clue on what to do lol!
