Probably not recommended, but won't kill it!
Wait for the onslaught telling you about wrecking your child's gut...

My ds1 had garlic bread and houmos at 8 months

yes - I read recently that the only they can't have at that age is honey.

Not sure about Tuna, I think I started to give fish to my dd around 8/9ish months but she has been having a teaspoon of parmesan in her meals since 6 months as recommended by our Ped. We live in Italy and the advise given re weaning is quiet different to that in the uk. I only found out about the honey thing through MN.

I think tuna and parmesan cheese are fine.

Why not?

DS (almost 7mths) had a homemade tuna fishcake for tea, and loved it. Haven't tried that particular cheese, but he loves cheddar and red leicester.

parmesan is usually unpasturised though - is that ok at this age?

AitchTwoOh · 15/01/2007 17:13

dd had both from very early on.

Hard unpasturised like parmesan is fine. Italian babies really are weaned on it from an early age (6 months) as was my ds. Now he dislikes any melted cheese etc but loves parmesan in pasta!

There may be a case for not giving your child a taste for it too soon as it is pretty expensive .

Tuna is OK though I believe the possible mercury levels mean it is not recommended that young babies eat it too often.

yes no problem. dd loves tuna, has had it since she was 7 months. i guess the caution is due to the mercury content.

How refreshing that there are so many sensible mummies on this thread!
The paranoid doom and gloom breastmilk-only-till-you're-two types get right up my nose!

Well, I breastfeed my almost two year old, and of course I give tuna (in small amounts) and parmesan. Parmesan is a healthy, natural food. Why attack people when it isn't warranted?

Thanks for that. Tuna lasagne for lunch it is. Ds is my third and rather than being "full of facts" I've forgotton everything. and just ad lib with him most of the time.

Parmesan is unpasteurised generally, so I would avoid it, at the risk of coming across as a parnoid mummy

Unpasteurised cheese only EVER puts you at risk of listeria if it is soft. Listeria need moisture to live, so hard cheeses are safe, full stop!

Report
oliveoil · 16/01/2007 15:13

Yes, they will eat anything at this age and then just when you get smug, they stop.

Wills · 16/01/2007 17:19

Oh don't worry Olive, I have a 6 year old that wont eat veg or fruit and a 3 year old that wont eat meat! They both ate EVERYTHING as a baby!

Has no-one thought to mention salt? Every one of the 5 or 6 tuna threads I've posted on before have reminded the OP to watch salt levels .
