Weaning

Baby with reflux

Good morning,

One of my twins has bad reflux. They're now 20 weeks, so I'm starting to look towards weaning in a few weeks time. With my older child, he had mainly finger foods right from the start. Anybody know the best approach for reflux? He's on medication, which works, but without it he was quite bad. Would purees be better at first than solid food? Any experiences?

One of my twins had awful reflux. We found that once she started to take solids, things got better. She was breastfed. We did baby led weaning. She is six now and was finally diagnosed with a delayed dairy allergy, which explains why she would not take many dairy products while weaning and is a picky eater. I am just mentioning this so you know if your little one is not eating certain foods, there might be an underlying reason.

DD loved food and refused to be fed, wanted to do blw. She refused milk very early, possibly associated with pain, which food wasn't. No allergies. Tried to wean her early on doctors advice, but she got so constipated , after just a few teaspoons of pear purée, we had to give up and go back to milk only. Tried several times but each time resulted in con stipation. In the end didn't wean til nearly 7 months when she loved it, had no constipation this time, and refused milk completely by 8 months. But happy to eat yogurt, and cheese sauce. Her reflux cleared up quickly after weaning. Doctor thought the constipation might have been an immature gut.

Yes, dairy allergy is one of the things the doc suspected, but we're currently hoping it's not that as he's responding to the reflux drugs well, so fingers crossed dairy won't be a problem. Definitely something to keep in mind though.

I've briefly read about an immature gut, but don't know much. I'm not sure we'll do early weaning as my feeling is that neither twin is ready yet, so it'll be a couple of weeks minimum before we try I reckon.

I weaned my twins at 21 weeks on the advice of the paeds because of their reflux. They were 31 weekers and couldn't sit up properly so we had to go down the purée route with them sitting upright in bouncy chairs. When they had a bit more head control around 25 weeks we introduced the finger foods.
